(If the video doesn't load, try again in a couple of minutes :) )

SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the risk of being repetitive... What an episode! It was so awesome learning more about the culture of the Fire Nation, as well as the skill of Fire Bending. Aang learned a VERY important message, it the worst possible way!

It was also great to get a bit of background on Zhao! I didn't think we ever would!

This one honestly hit me different (at 'that' moment), this show continues to impress with how emotional you get for the characters.

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

before I start the episode, I have to get these out of the way: The movie is book 1. So technically once you're done with the first season, you can watch the movie. It would actually be hilarious to watch them back to back, cause then you have the full comparison fresh in your mind. And oh boy... intristingly the movie had potential! Looking at some of the actors and some of the visual effects and the hit-or-miss director (imo 90%+ miss, but that is a whole different discussion) - it really had a lot of potential! But... oh boy... edit: I forgot about the slight changes in the ending that are mild spoilers... so yeah, maybe do the movie between Avatar and Korra... Korra gets a bad rap. It has its issues, but it's not a bad show. It's just different - intentionally so! People expected Avatar 2.0, but the creators (imo rightfully) decided to really change the mood, the feel, the grown-upness of the story and character. It explores very different themes, and therefore has a very different style, while staying true to the world built. That difference is what a lot of people have a hard time wrapping their head around. I didn't like Korra at first either. But I came to love her (as a character and as a show). The only true issue I have is the pacing and overall structure of seasons, that I'm looking forward discussing in the future! I don't know her canon age, but I always took June to be in her 30s or something like that. She managed to establish herself as a renowned bounty hunter without having to affiliate herself with a nation in a war torn world - she's been doing this for a while! And fyi, bounty hunters aren't necessarily bad! There are some that are bad for sure. But generally they exist to help where the law can't follow. Like, if someone runs from the law and crosses borders - burocratic hell for law enforcement, bounty hunter can just go and get them. Also it would eat up a lot of resources if the police (or something akin) would track down everyone with an outstanding warrant - that's the majority of cases bounty hunters take...

I love this episode! Definitely do the Shamalama shit show movie at the end of this series before Korra. So excited for Korra!!! I love LoK so so mu h and while I always go back to ATLA for comfort, I definitely enjoy the more mature and modern elements of Korra just as much. Don't go into it expecting it to be the same as this series but just part of the world and you will thoroughly enjoy it! 😁😁😁

Rey's Got Plans

Definitely wait until the end of the series to do the movie like most reactors as it's got a mild spoiler at the end but its also just much more impactful (in the worst way 🤭) once you've gone through the entire journey with the characters in the original!

PumpkinSparks

I forgot about that! honestly, it's been such a long time since I watched the movie, that I didn't remember the ending 100% ...

PumpkinSparks

Is there a decent fire nation person we've met? Oh, I don't know... how about the old man in the Jet episode? Or, since you said Jeong Jeong who has seen his errors as a military person and decided to change his ways, how about Iroh? Lover of tea, music, Pai Sho, and everything calm. And sure he's dead, but Roku? We don't know much about him yet, but he seems like a decent guy? Speaking of Roku: Aang is 12 and was in the ice for 100 year, so that means Roku died 112 years ago. I do not think that Jeong Jeong was his teacher! The math is not mathing ;)

(Spoilers for Korra!) My issue wasn't with the fact that Korra was different. Sure, we went from anciet China to New York and a lot of things were Americanised, but it's the writers' choice. There were also some things I really liked, like the family dynamics of our grown up characters. What I didn't like were the changes they made to the worldbuilding (the whole Raava and Vaatu thing, the nature of Avatar), which in my opinion made the world less interesting and yes, less mature. But that's my take. I think Korra is fun to watch, I just don't like that it's canon ahahaha

Steven

You touched on it at the end of the video but every scene with Roku is an absolute treat. His voice is also just incredible

PumpkinSparks

I see your problems with it. I saw it more as a widening or deepening of the mythology. But I see your issue. First time watching I was also a bit eh about it. My main issue is the pacing. There are significant jumps between seasons and they don't feel organic to me. I understand why the writers did it, I just don't feel it was done well. Like Avatar was one continous story, where Korra has a new villain and a new issue/theme each season - which can be interesting, but I feel the writing lacks in that departement. It really could have been done better. And that is also why I feel that Korras developement in her abilities is too sudden. It feels more like plot armor than actual achievement. Those are my 2 main gripes with the series... All of that being said: I LOVE Korra!!!

Just my thoughts about the movie: It essentially covers the time period that Book 1 does in the show BUT I would just watch the whole show through and then maybe place the movie between ATLA and Korra. I think this show is best consumed without unsavory interruptions.

jolt45

Also, Shyu from the fire nation temple was a pretty cool guy.

VeggieGamer

Oh wow, how did I forget him? Great call!

Cinnamon troll

Yeah, I agree with every word. There are many things I don't like about Korra, there's no point in listing them all, but I really appreciate your enthusiasm :) There's sadly too much negativity around this wonderful series.

Brendan Coen

We are deep enough now that it’s making me want to binge the rest on my own lol.

Lisette C.

Imo the spoiler at the end of the movie is very minor, but I agree that it is still a spoiler, so you might want to listen to the people saying that it's best to wait until the end of the series... I personally think you should watch it after book 1 has ended to have the season fresh in your mind and also just to get it done with, so that you can enjoy the rest of the series without tainting it in the end 😅 I feel like watching the movie before book 2 might give you a bigger appreciation for the series as a whole tbh ❤️

WulfricsGong

Hi Veggie, since you're nearing the end of Season 1, I wanted to give you a headsup that the finale is a 2 parter. I would highly recommend watching them together. And another thing: make sure you don't watch the series on Paramount (I don't know which platform you're watching from anymore) because they apparently sometimes cut big chunks of important scenes out (like in episode 18)

Cari Ann

Yea I also wasnt a fan of the spirits in korra. In ATLA we barely get that many spirits but they are always so interesting and seem to be outside our definition of good and evil, than in korra with tons of dark spirits idk the feel is just way different with the spirit world there.

Kael Johnsen

Hey veggie are you gonna make the last 3-4 episodes a movie? The story for the last ones is kinda closely hold together

Madikuma95

I love seeing the Fire Nation culture in this episode! And Roku's sudden appearance gives me chills, too!

Maia Brodsky

Jeong Jeong wouldn't have taught Roku. Aang and Bumi were just kids 100 years ago, when Roku was already an old man. Jeong Jeong was possibly not even born yet at that time.

Brady Renfro

I can't wait for Korra, I love it just as much as ATLA. It helps grow and expand the universe :)

Jake M

2 minutes in and I'm checking "Discussion about Only Fools and Horses" off the Veggie Gamer bingo card yet again XD

Kael Johnsen

The series id about to start for real now in just a few episodes, cant wait🤣

Rold

Obviously gotta watch korra after, though you can take a little break between. Movie is season 1, would be good fun but kinda painful to watch again haha. Also you haven't mentioned the live-action adaptation Netflix series? Currently season 1 of 3 is out and well... it's better than the movie and has some cool changes and visuals, but also oddly a lot of similar issues to the movie. Hopefully Netflix series will adapt to the feedback for seasons 2 and 3. Idk if anyone would consider this a spoiler but this episode does not appear in any of the adaptations :(

CR Ash

Veggie I genuinely think you will like Korra even more than this series simply because you tend to adore characters like Korra

Lukas

I don't think we can count Roku here. He lived before the war, before this extreme opposition between fire and the other nations. Just like Kuzon(?), the fire friend Aang mentioned in Blue Spirit. The war makes it a lot more difficult for decent fire-people to behave decently towards non-fire people and a lot easier for fire-people to let out their evil side.

Lukas

I don't get this point regarding "the grown-upness" - what's so grown-up about dystopian worlds? It's just sad. Too many people shut down that optimistic happyness that they find so childish and live in a dreary, grey world, just to be "grown-up". And while Korra may be a few years older than Aang (at least in "unfrozen" age), Aang seemed to display a lot more wisdom and "grown-upness" than Korra. And the series as a whole tackled grown-up topics beautifully in a way that allows you to critically think about them without losing hope. Korra just seemed to slap stuff in your face and tells you what's right and wrong (in their view).
