We are here! The finale of Season 6, and I must say, I loved it! Will be very interested to hear your thoughts on this one!

I am so sorry. I jump on one of the funny moments in this episode. I feel terrible as I was completely baffled for a second because of it. At the end I go back to check what I missed. :(

I have literally no idea where or how Season 7 will start, but we are on the final stretch and I can't wait to get back to it!

Hope you are well, lovelies!!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

By the way, Veggie, now you can watch all the DVD-Extras for the previous seasons because they filmed alot of those at the start of filming season 7. No more spoilers (I think).

VeggieGamer

Oooh, we may need to do this! I had completely forgotten about the extras! Thanks!

S6 is actually my favorite season, and I think once you have the entire show under your belt you might re-evaluate. I realize this is a far from universal opinion, but I stand by it. It wouldn't have made sense for Spike to get his chip out to hurt Buffy, since he could already hurt her. He was very confused so his affect was all over the place, but this was his plan all along (the writers have confirmed).

Ruins of Wonderland

That shot of Buffy crawling out of the grave for the second time, pulling Dawn up with her always gives me full body chills, and makes me tear up sometimes. It's so powerful, especially right after the "show (the world) to you" line. It's all a part of why I really love this season. Hard to rank them most days, but the arc Buffy goes thru is just so deeply meaningful to me. Willow is still my favorite character from both Buffy and Angel, but I feel like Buffy (the character lol) is so underrated in this season. We finally got to this final scene!! This is the part that, in my personal opinion of course, gives a big ig stipulation to my og opinion on this show and their use of SA. Spike is an evil demon in a human body. Part of themselves gets transformed into the vampire, yes, but still he only had a chip holding him back from his evil desires. It always did. His feelings for Buffy clearly clouded that but it was always there. So what he did to Buffy is just as unforgivable as the other things he did - hard to really rank acts of evil/cruelty. So, that all being said, when I think if we had supernatural powers to somehow use as "punishment" in our own world against people who commit these evil acts obviously being human, or maybe they somehow get a cosmic supernatural punishment after they do it or something, I really can't think of a much better "punishment" than giving the person their "soul." Like, imagine we had the ability to actually give bad people the conscious of what they've done. If we could really give them the ability to *feel* what they've done. Basically rewiring their brain to face the consequences, in full, of what they've done. To make them live with that from then on, literally forever in Spike's case theoretically. I'm not trying to get too personal, but man do I think that's a heavy, heavy burden to put back onto them. Far more than any capital punishment or prison time could correct. I could talk for hours about this lol. I just think it's so, so impactful. I've spent soo long thinking about this lol. I don't know if this was exactly what the creators were going for, but regardless, what a HELL of a punishment they granted. I applaud them so much for it lol. Anyway, great reaction Veggie. I'm so, so interested to hear how you end up liking season 7. Please try not to let us fans sway you one way or another until you form your own opinions. It's one of those endings. 😂 Take care 💜

Great reaction Veggie. It's funny that you mention the one-man touring show (called 'Buffy Revamped'), which based on Buffy. I have seen it twice. It's a very clever, funny and nostalgic retelling of all 144 episodes in 70 minutes. It's heavily abridged, but it's a work of genius. I hope you get chance to see it someday, but you must watch all of season 7 first.

It’s slightly funny to me that you know Nathan Fillion primarily as Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing 🤣 I absolutely recommend Firefly, it has a devoted fan base for a reason. I think that this season gets a bad reputation because of the trio. We look at their episodes, and they are really pathetic as the villains, and they do tend to be weaker episodes. But it is because they are not the big bad for this season. The arc of this season is more nuanced than that, and it’s easy to forget that we wouldn’t have this frankly epic ending if there had been an actual threat worth worrying about before then. To clarify a little, we were intentionally misled about what Spike was doing. We were supposed to assume that he wanted to get rid of the chip, so that it could be a big twist when we find out that instead he was fighting to get his soul back. I think that you hit the nail on the head saying that the problem with the SA scene is that it was done for character development. Especially since it wasn’t even *her* character development. Same with your opinions about Xander. I have always loved that moment for him and Willow, it’s still incredibly powerful. I really used to love Xander all around as a character, but the older I’ve gotten, the more I see the ways he is a kind of indulgent self insert, and it’s hard to unsee.

Maia Brodsky

I find it interesting that you assume Spike is going to be a villain after what we saw in that final scene, considering what we know about souls across both shows. You're only the second reactor I've seen have that take, and the other reactor happens to be one who just watched this finale in the last couple of weeks. Also, I'm a bit confused about how the soul would override the chip? I don't think Giles was only laughing at the 'Buffy sleeping with Spike' bit specifically, but more so the entire shitshow of what's happened since he left, which Buffy just summed up for him. I actually like the part where Anya realizes that Xander saved them all. It's not that she forgives him, of course, but Emma does an amazing job of portraying her own bewilderment that she still has the capacity to be *proud* of him, despite how much anger she still has toward him. It's really a very emotionally nuanced moment, from my perspective anyway. Idk what moment from another show you might be thinking of, but could it be AtLA, maybe? Sokka went to evacuate the village instead of trying to stop Jet from flooding it. See you next season!

VeggieGamer

Oooh, I think you are right on the Sokka thing! I thought it was more recent, but that fits it perfectly! Sorry about my other takes, just giving my natural reaction! Looking forward to having the whole picture by the end of the show! :)

Maia Brodsky

No no, don't apologize of course, I was more just wanting to pick your brain about what you were thinking about/predicting in that moment. And now I'm remembering that people have given you a hard time about making predictions in the past, which is... very odd of those people. I find it fascinating to see someone's vision of what the next season might look like.

I think the Giles & Dawn moment you were thinking of was when Dawn snuck out with her friend on Halloween… Buffy leaves Giles to deal with it, and Dawn says “Is this the part where you tell me you’re not angry, just disappointed?” and Giles says “Yes, something like that. Except for the not being angry part.” And gives her a deserved, but very cold and stern lecture. I love this finale! For all of season 6’s ups and downs, I really find this to be a beautiful ending. I’m so glad you commented on the song at the end! The use of that Sarah McLachlan setting of the Prayer of St. Francis is SO GOOD! The lyrics fit so beautifully. And the way the song fades out on the line “And it’s in dying that we are born to eternal life,” as the scene transitions to Spike getting his soul back??? Just perfect. As others have pointed out, the writers have confirmed that Spike did want his soul all along, it was meant to be a misdirect for the audience to think he wanted the chip removed. Personally, I feel like there needed to be like one extra beat in that final scene, because Spike’s reaction of pain sort of reads like he’s surprised to be getting his soul, which undercuts the reveal that this is what he wanted all along. If there was just a moment of Spike being satisfied/relieved/determined in between “We will restore your soul” and the pain of the restoration starting, it might have been a clearer reveal (that the writers wouldn’t have to confirm later, lol). So, NOW I can circle back to “Seeing Red” and That Scene with Spike. I appreciate that, narratively, Spike needed to have some sort of rock-bottom “I’m still a monster” moment, something that would drive him to the truly extraordinary next step of “I’m still a monster, and I DON’T WANT TO BE.” And THAT, I love for Spike. It’s a fantastic story arc, and introducing another Vampire-With-a-Soul, but one who actually CHOSE it, is a great idea from the writers. (I’m not spoiling anything about where this story goes, just talking about where it leaves off at the end of this episode.) BUT, where I have a big problem with it is that Buffy is sexually assaulted by Spike, purely as a catalyst for Spike’s character development, and that is just an appalling way to use SA in a story. And that’s where I agree with your brother that it was a mistake on the writers’ part. The overall story where Spike does SOMETHING terrible and it leads to him questing for his soul? Love it. But the choice of THAT as his rock bottom moment I do feel was a mistake.

Firefly & Dollhouse get my votes for you to watch after this- both by the same person, the latter including Faith, Fred & a few other actors you might love :P Angel Season 3 definitely gets my vote over Buffy Season 6. I'd say I'm glad it's over, but that means Season 7 is next...XD (it's not half bad, tbh, I think it gets a bad rap!)

Jake M

I'm actually seeing the one man play in Sheffield next week! Crapping myself tbh but should be good XD Are you sure you don't remember Xander dressing as a pirate with an eyepatch when he played mini golf with Ted? 😝

Madikuma95

Surprise! Xander was the hero and Willow was the Big Bad all along. 😛 A blooper I noticed is when Xander gets thrown at the statue, it moves as if it's made from styrofoam! (Which it probably is.) And Giles laughing at Buffy's list of Season 6 shenanigans was just the actor's natural reaction to that line, so they left it in! 😂

Hanneli Norrgard

Season 6, for me, was just not the Buffy the Vampire Slayer that we love. It wasn't really about the supernatural but was almost all about magic, and that's why I don't like it. The magic storylines just don't do it for me. They should have left Buffy dead, and we likely would have been fine (but I don't like her, so...). It just all seems like a different show, and one with things I could get elsewhere. If I wanted to watch a coming of age show with a bit of magic mixed in, that's they show I would have started watching in the first place. People seem to love Firefly, but all I can think of when hearing it is Serenity, which is a movie which I really really didn't like. The show must be a lot better, or people are just Joss biased (which seems odd).

SapientButterfly

Great reaction to the season finale. I for one love season 6, there are a few throwaway episodes that aren't my favourite to re-watch, but that's the case with every season, and 6 for me has some real standouts that I absolutely adore. I really don't even mind the trio episodes so much. Maybe it's watching with prior knowledge that they aren't the big bad of the season helps. And their stupid antics bring moments of levity in the midst of the darker themes of depression and addiction etc. I love that it was Xander who saved the day, or at least what he represents by being the one to stop Willow. As Giles said, 'no magic or supernatural force can stop her', it was the raw, human emotions she'd been burrying or fighting, and the love of her friend that brought her back to herself. I absolutely vote you watch Firefly next, I love love love that series so much, and then the movie Serenity is a must watch afterwards!

x_Rhi_x

i love s6, its my second fave season. 1st episode she crawls out of the grave and "leaves part of her behind" and then in the finale she crawls out with a brand new lease of life...rebirth. the storylines were real, raw and relatable, and dealt with depression, addiction etc which hits hard imo. I also love that it was xander who got to willow and saved the world this time...oh and i saw the one man buffy show, it was great!

Hanneli Norrgard

Just to let you know, I'll be here and watching the Season 7 reactions but likely won't comment. I'm too old to deal with the superfans who don't like hearing that I don't like the season and can't understand why I'd watch your reactions anyway. So, I'll be here in membership and spirit. I only say this because I know that many reactors don't like to see comment numbers go down and wanted you to know why.

Maia Brodsky

Lol you gave me a Mandela effect feeling for a second, because the eyepatch was the season 6 Halloween episode, not the Ted episode.... right? 🤔 Oh man, now I gotta go rewatch Ted smh

Maia Brodsky

I would argue that it was utilized for Buffy's character development as well (though I can't go into detail about that yet), but yeah, I'm still hopelessly conflicted about whether I think it was truly a mistake or not (on the part of the writers).

thompur

The 4th time Xander saves the world.

thompur

"Firefly", then "Dollhouse", then, if you haven't seen it already. "Veronica Mars", which, for a lot of us OG Buffy viewers, helped fill the void that the end of Buffy left.

James McCarthy

A weaker season but an excellent final arc (: Love the resolution choice and the person involved love them or hate them makes the most sense when you think about how long those two have known eachother. Season 7 is far from my favourite but it is good overally stronger than season 6 (:

Goblin

Hello, Veggie !! I'm so sorry I've fallen off completely when it comes to commenting/discussing episodes, but I had to make a point to comment this time to say that Firefly would be an EXCELLENT choice !! I feel like you will absolutely adore it ! The characters are exceptional and the world building and writing are a damn masterclass in and of themselves. I'd also be really excited to see you tackle some sci-fi stuff, as you've mentioned enjoying Red Dwarf in the past. Anyway, hope you're having a good time, please give Woozle some scritches for me. :o)

jolt45

*spoiler alert for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1* I'm a little late but I think I know the episode you were recalling in this reaction. It was the episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender where we think Sokka is meant to go stop Jet's gang from blowing up the dam but he gets the town to evacuate instead.
