Hi guys! It's that time again, another grand spanking new Book review! Another single chapter, but we still had a lot to talk about! Including Percy's letter, Black's guilt trip, the potential of racism in the Wizarding World and Pumpkin Pasty!

We also discuss breathing, Will Smith's entire family, question if flans are pies, and for a reason I genuinely don't know why... - Space Precinct.

Love you, guys! Thanks for understanding why I decided to go single chapter this time. We will be able to the double next month! :)

I am one of those people who skips to my comment when you post and saves the rest of the video for walking/running accompaniment for the rest of the week! So excited for this one, thanks for the video as always. In response to Sirius’s insight into not all bad people being Death Eaters being surprisingly nuanced for his personality… well, Sirius was wrongfully imprisoned without a trial by the “anti death eater” side, so it makes sense he knows being against Voldemort doesn’t always make you righteous! Probably a lesson he learned very much the hard way.

PumpkinSparks

First time, I ever skipped to you reading my comment without watching the rest of review and book club. Feels weird... guess I know what I'll be doing when I got home :P "You're in a cult, call you're dad"! is a quote from My Favorite Murder - a comedy podcast about murder. It's incredibly niche!!! I was sure you're not a Murderino, but the quote just fits my point and made me giggle out loud

Huldra Draco

Yay!!!! My favorite day of the month, when Veggie's book review drops!!

As I've said, totally fine with one chapter a video! I personally love being able to go more in-depth on certain things when they happen. Hagrid kind of had a "TBD" sentence to Azkaban when you think about it and it makes me angry when I do so I try not to think about it often. People have made comparisons between Harry's era and the Marauders era for years and Ron is basically the his era's version of Sirius so I'm not surprised that he didn't immediately tell Sirius no when he wanted to meet up at Hogsmeade. Sirius' maturity and social skills basically stopped developing at 21 because of all the time in Azkaban so yeah, that does make him an interesting adult character. I've been on a kick of listening to podcasts and watching videos about WWII and specifically things like how important code breaking was so now when I think of Harry writing to Sirius that's all I can think of. Wormtail does know that Sirius is on good terms with Harry. I don't think that Harry thinks talking about the weather is inherently bad, he's just an awkward teenager trying to talk to the girl he likes and he thinks he could have said something cooler. I think the first time I ever went horseback riding was in Ireland in 2002 on a family vacation (visiting my mom's family), kind of wish I kept up with it when I got home. I am also terrible at breathing, especially when I'm doing presentations for work, and drinking water. I also got the "eat really fast because you never know where your next meal is going to come from" gene from the generational trauma lottery. This did remind me to go fill up my big water bottle though so at least there's that. I just saw the term AuDHD today and you talking about social anxiety and your grocery store interaction made me think of it, and that I think is 100% me. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager and I'm 99% sure I'm on the spectrum too. Whenever peanut butter and jam sandwiches are mentioned all I can think about are the Smucker's commercials that George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr do (they're baseball players for the Toronto Blue Jays), and specifically their "PB&J vs J&PB" commercial. It's so ridiculous but George's "What did you say to me???" makes me giggle every time. Jada Pinkett-Smith is her name. I'm fairly certain Lucius was at school at the same time but there is at least the same age gap between him and the Marauders as there is between Percy and the trio. Going to Azkaban for stealing a loaf of bread is very Les Miserables and yet feels accurate to the wizarding world. I'm not sure why Hermione was surprised at Ron's comment about Podmore's arrest being a setup, Ron is great at strategy. We see that with how good at chess he is. Steve Kloves (screenwriter of all movies except OOTP) definitely wanted them to be a couple, and that dance scene was as close as he could get to that. I've never been a Harmony shipper personally, I've only ever really been able to see him with Ginny romantically. I will edit to add more thoughts later as my lunch break is done, haha. I'm back, I've been distracted by baseball and now I need to be distracted from baseball (I can't watch Toronto Blue Jays games live because they will lose if I do and they're playing game three of their playoff series vs the Yankees right now). I believe it's the nosebleed nougat antidote they give Katie. Poor Katie, as someone with anemia it particularly hurts my heart hearing how much blood she lost. Hermione not taking it personally when Ron and/or Harry snap at her makes me think she'd do very well in customer support, lol. I personally love the tangents! My AuDHD brain relates to them so much. Oh Percy. I don't really know what to say about him. As frustrating as it is I truly do think he means well. I think that he's been brainwashed by the ministry in the same way that he thinks Ron has been by Harry/Dumbledore. Sadness is, I think, a very accurate way to feel about the whole situation. It also shows that Percy does not know his siblings well at all. I never considered that Umbridge's legislation would be in response to POA but it makes total sense. I have always thought (as far as I can remember) that it was because Fudge feared that Dumbledore would use them to overthrow him and the government and that's why he didn't want them to have practical DADA training. To be fair, I also think James would have said no to Sirius in this scenario. James grew up a lot after Hogwarts, especially in the short time he was a father, so I think Sirius is still thinking of the teenager version on James. I will come back and if I have any comments on the book club I will edit this, but those are my thoughts on your thoughts! I think part of the reason characters like Percy weren't in the movies as much is because not all of the books had been published when they started making the movies, because they needed to capitalize on the books popularity. I think the movie actually made it very clear that he wasn't coming back by having Bellatrix hit him with the killing curse first, which I appreciate actually. I do think Fred and George felt bad about giving Katie the wrong sweet, they never want to actually harm their friends. I don't watch golf at all, I find it tremendously boring, but your Ryder Cup talk got me wondering which side a Canadian would be on. We are still part of the commonwealth but we're in North America. I wouldn't say the Weasley siblings see Percy as a laughing stock, but he is definitely the black sheep of the family. PumpkinSparks makes such a good point about Percy being indoctrinated and it is everything I have wanted to say but said far more eloquently than I could! Although when they were mentioning how they were isolating Percy from his family my initial thought was like an abusive partner. As for Pansy's comment about Angelina's hair, it's definitely racist by the standards of our world and the muggle world, but I think it was just an immature comment mocking someone's appearance the same way we think if Harry describing Pansy's appearance. Regarding false accusations and Snape, I've said it before and I will say it again Harry never actually accused Snape of trying to steal the stone. The only person outside of Ron and Hermione he told was Hagrid and he was not in a position of authority. He actually made it a point to not mention Snape when he was telling McGonagall that he thought someone would steal the stone. Also great news, although the Jays lost yesterday while I was finishing my comments on you review they just won right now so they are moving on to the next round!!!!! On a personal note I completed a certification program through work that I've been working on since late 2023 this week AND I'm seeing POA live in concert on Saturday so it is a good week.

Yay! Perfect timing! Regarding Will Smith and his family - I’ve heard Will is phenomenal in King Richard. As for his kids, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a lot of confidence. I think that should be encouraged, not humbled. It can’t be easy to be a child born into the craziness that is celebrity culture. Plus, in comparison to other nepo babies, Jaden and Willow have turned out relatively fine lol. Anyways looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Percy! I’ve been eagerly waiting the letter chapter

VeggieGamer

Thanks Sam! Yeah you are right about not stifling confidence. I don’t even know what my waffle was, sorry!!

Sam-I-Am

Hi fellow Murderino! Not sure if you listen to other true crime podcasts, but this makes me think of another quote - “Be weird, be rude, stay alive”

Embran

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you remind me again what that ¨Oof-tee-poof...testarosso¨ quote stems from we say as greetings? I can´t recall and sure can´t find online because of mispelling likely. Is it a quote from a character from a show, a famous person or some nonsensical phrase? It´s kinda our own Veggie fans motto by now, but I at least want to know again what the heck i am copy pasting lol. ^^

VeggieGamer

Haha, it is 'Hufflepuff' in 3 different languages! Welsh, one I can't quite remember right now, sorry, and I think Italian? Sorry if I got any of this wrong!

Sam-I-Am

No need to apologize! Enjoyed the breakfast food/Will Smith waffle! I probably am a tad more sympathetic to nepo babies than most (though I still get a good laugh out of Brooklyn Beckham’s “photography book”) 😂🙈

BelarusLestrange

Sirius is made to be a far more “perfect “character in the movies. You really see in this book how flawed and immature he really is. great character, but I think a lot of movie only watchers have a completely different sense of him.

PumpkinSparks

Yey, a fellow Murderino! I honestly don't listen to a lot of podcasts. I have a really hard time concentrating on spoken words if I don't have a visual. But I absolutely adore my murder aunts! And the occasional Buried Bones - their way of looking at the evidence is just so interesting, yey science :) "Be weird, be rude, stay alive" sounds familiar, but I can't place it. I like the vibe though! It's very much on the same plane as "fuck politeness"

Madikuma95

Haven't watched the vid yet (I'm at work) but flans are definitely NOT pies. 😭

Alex Hopps

For me, the quality of game of thrones jumped off a cliff after sesson 4. Despite a few good moments after that i could talk for a painfully long time about everything wrong it

VeggieGamer

Yeah, I think I was 4 or 5, I can't pin point it exactly, but it was certainly before the majority started to see the cracks!

Alex Hopps

For me i can pinpoint the exact moment because barristan selny was killed in an alleyway by an unnamed masked man. Thst still makes me angry to this day. But thats on a long list of nit picking i could do. Shouldnt think about that now though coz ive got book club to enjoy and i shouldnt let hbo wind me up 10 years later 🤣

Harry is my favorite character, Hermione is my second favorite, and I absolutely love their friendship. You can already see the slow evolution of their relationship. I think too often people ignore their relationship or trivialize it. People who have seen the films often ship them and say they were in love, while people who have read the books often say that Hermione irritated Harry and that she always came second to Ron. Neither is true. Harry and Hermione were never attracted to each other. And also, Harry preferred Ron in the early books because it's natural for a boy that age to be friends with children of the same sex. What Hermione and Harry have is a friendship between a girl and a boy who deeply care for each other, despite their differences. And it's really fascinating to watch how that friendship changes throughout the books.

You have seen Nurmengard Castle, which is a wizard prison both in Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, Veggie. I'm not sure if the place they take Newt and Tina in the first Fantastic Beasts, to get their mind wiped, is a prison too. Possibly. I would have preferred Harry and Hermione to get together in the end, for multiple reasons that I can't go into just now as you aren't finished the books yet. However, from early on, the way they are written, there was never a suggestion of the two of them clicking romantically. Rowling has stated that if she were to rewrite the books again, Harry and Hermione would have been a couple. I will say though that the way Ron and Hermione are developed to come together in the books, is pretty well done, so it makes sense in the context of this particular story version. Can't wait to see how you defend Percy again with the letter. ;) Only kidding, I think you surmise it pretty well and whilst I don't agree with some of your thoughts Veggie, you break it down well to fit your argument about him. All I'll say is Percy is completely in the wrong here, especially in his thoughts about Harry. Perhaps he is trying to get Ron to distance himself from Harry as some sort of brotherly love - I get it. However his entire argument is negated in the fact that, if not for Harry, Percy wouldn't currently have a little sister - Ginny would be dead. Percy should know by now the type of person Harry is, even if he doesn't agree with Harry's words about Voldemort and the Ministry. He is being disingenuous at the minimum here. Ron is right, he is a git! Yeah Hermione is so great in the books. She is full of heart, gets the boys out of so many binds, and her flaws just make her all the more endearing. Harry is my favourite character in the books, but Hermione wouldn't be far behind. Yeah I do think the events of two years ago during Prisoner of Azkaban are coming back to "bite" Lupin. He does reference at the end of the film (can't remember if he says in the book) that some letters got leaked to the Ministry (from Snape its heavily hinted at) that a teacher at Hogwarts, is a Werewolf. This probably made its way to Umbridge, who forwarded an anti-Werewolf motion to restrict them further.

Ziro the Hutt

Great point about Sirius being stunted as an adult emotionally, as he has spent the vast majority of it, in prison; so hasn't ever quite matured.

Gugurupurasu Daikirai

Sorry my comment was long. I would have said that in the comment but that would have made it longer. Will Smith was in a movie about CTE in the NFL a few years back called Concussion if you're curious

Alias93

In regards to which chapters should be done individually, I think people agree chapters 23 and 28 should have their own book club video, and if you do 15+16, 17+18 and 19+20 as I think you've mentionned previously, then that leaves you with a difficult choice for chapters 21 and 22: they are a bit long, but if you do them separately then it would mean 3 book clubs in a row with only one chapter (with chapter 23). There is also the fact that chapters 21 and 22 go well together and splitting them up would break the dynamic of the story a little. But there's still time to decide before we get there.

Jake M

Glad I could disappoint you with the Hermes joke XD they had to rebrand to Evri- I think it may have been them who refused to deliver your Dunelm Christmas present from me a couple of years ago! You definitely made excuses for Percy, but I think they were good ones, it's like when Hawwah defends Snape- baffling, but interesting.

VeggieGamer

Yeah the Barristan moment was awful. I was seeing cracks for a while, but (and I can't remember when this exactly happened) when Jaime & Braun (I think it was him) rock up on the shores of Dawn, kill two guards then literally run all the way right through the city and into the middle of the palace gardens directly to where Marcela was without any problems at all, I thought out loud 'Ok, the writers aren't even trying any more'.

Alex Hopps

You're the best veggie! I enjoy all of the content regardless bjt the fact your actually engaging me in a GoT rant on a harry Potter video just makes me so happy! But yeah, totally agree, all of the dorne story was completely ridiculous. The writing on that show was so terrible. And its hard to blame them for it. They ran out of book plots, and to this day the next book still has never been released. Its just such a shame because the first few seasons of that show were some the best television ive ever seen

Cari Ann

Can't believe I am disagreeing with you on this but I actually disagree that Percy is lying when he says he thinks Harry got off on a technicality. As a huge live court fan I really hate the phrase because it usually always means the law protected the accuseds rights. Like with alec baldwin, the prosecutor in that case hid evidence from his defense and it all came out during trial and he was granted a mistrial with prejudice, it can't be tried again, people say he got off on a technicality and its like well yea, technically its completely messed up to hide evidence from defendants, that should never happen no matter who it is. So basically what I am saying is if Percy was looking at this the way others look at that phrase he would think "the law was written wrong to include an underage wizard being able to use magic in life threatening situations, thats the only reason he got off, thats just a technicality he still is guilty of using underage magic outside of school". I am still not a fan of Percy like you are but I find your takes on him really interesting.

itsanursething

Not done with the video yet, but I want to say this before I forget! On the Harry/Hermione relationship thing...I am one of those who believes they SHOULD have ended up together. At THIS point in the series, it's less about Harry showing interest in Hermione. He likes Cho, I think he's kind of starting to show interest in Ginny too. He's a horny teenage boy, so he's bound to like a lot of girls and not always for the important reasons. Anyway! My opinion is, Harry and Hermione were more compatible, definitely on a more similar level. They were always able to have proper conversations with each other (as opposed to Ron and Hermione always arguing). Harry understood what Hermione was saying more often; they both grew up muggle so they related more to each other. If I'm remembering correctly, JKR did say at one point that I. Some ways they’re more compatible. Totally different topic! I've been curious about this for a while now, and if you don't feel like sharing you don't have to! When and/or why did you go vegan?

itsanursething

Hot take alert! The show went downhill the moment they killed the first dire wolf. After that it was all garbage.

Katik

Hi Veggie, can't believe I missed another book club! I had finally caught up up to the previous one a few weeks back, but then forgot to join this one! Anyway still enjoying your reviews! One point not sure if anyone already made re your reaction to Percy Imperiused by Wormtail theory: I am not saying I agree with the theory, but amount of detail about Weasleys in the letter is no proof to the contrary. Remember Wormtail had lived with Weasleys and then in Griffindor Tower as Scabbers for years! He probably knows every sigle Weasley better than anyone else that's not a Weasley. Second point - Imperious doesn't necessarily mean that the afflicted person has their mind wiped and the controlling person needs to know everything. The command might simply be "behave as usual; kiss a** to The Ministry; distrust Dumbledore; hate Harry Potter; write to Ron" etc The imperiused person can still fill in the specifics from their own mind as long as they are obeying the command. Having said all that, I personally am not on board with theory, but still find it very plausible.

Grace

I think the majority of people who think Harry and Hermione should've ended up together are movie watchers (not saying there aren't book fans, but there's a lot less of them). Emma and Dan had great screen chemistry and the way Steve Kloves wrote their scenes together doesn't help. He was definitely trying to make them be a couple btw, he loved Hermione so much and is responsible for messing up Ron and Ginny. If he had his way, he would've made Harry end up with Hermione but obviously he couldn't do that. Also for the record, JK didn't say she regretted not putting Harry and Hermione together. That's a misunderstanding. She once questioned whether Hermione and Ron would've been a good couple in real life. And that's it. No mention of Harry and Hermione but for some reason people took that quote and ran with it.

Grace

JK never said that for the record

Sam-I-Am

I adore them too! Every time I listen to an episode it’s like I’m sitting and chatting with friends. I’ll have to check out Buried Bones, I’m always on the hunt for new true crime podcasts to listen to. And “be weird, be rude, stay alive” comes from Crime Junkies podcast!

2026-09-07 04:00 Did I use some of my unplanned 6 hour overlay to watch the book review yesterday? Maybe... Now on to bookclub! I love talking about the weather! Now, I live in a climate that (just like the British Isles) is quite changable, so I actually think it's an interesting topic AND certainly something everyone has an opinion about. No matter how dull people say that topic is, the moment you bring it up everyone has something to say, so I'd say it's a great conversation starter/filler. And I like nature, so I like weather. Horseback riding is really fun, especially if you work with a trainer who really considers the animals well being. I used to have lessons as a kid, and we actually started without a saddle to really get a feel for the horses movements, and he had us lie on our back while riding the horse to really built that trust, and really hammerd into us the importance of grooming the horses before and after riding them. It worked amazingly well! Later we lived next to stables for some years, and I was over there nearly every single day. The others thought my method was weird and esoteric, but I was always way quicker in building a bond with a new horse than the others. If you want to learn how to breath poperly, I would recommend singing lessons! You don't have to be able to sing amazingly to take them, and you can even tell the teacher that your main goal is breathing techniques. But let me tell you: singing is 80% breathing properly (at least) and these techniques stay with you in your daily life! Lucius age is a bit of a mystery. I believe it was mentioned somewhere, that he is younger than Snape (and therefore the Marauders) by quite a bit. But that doesn't math at all. Harry and Draco are the same age, and we know that the Potters died VERY young, so they had Harry shortly after graduating (like a couple years later tops) Did Lucius have Draco while still in school? It's just one of the many inconsistencies in the story... Pretty sure Britain only has Azkaban. I believe there are different layers with different amount of Dementors on them (still very bad!) I think the layer thing was mentioned on Pottermore - or I made it up to make sense of it and it became canon in my head. I truly can't tell you... I always read the "tagging of merfolk" in 2 ways simultaniously: 1. demeaning them into animals, like tagging cattle 2. for me it is a very obvious parallel to the holocaust, when the Nazis forced there "prisoners" to wear symbols showing their "offense" (gold star for jews, pink triangle for homosexual men, red triangle for communists, black triangle for Roma, etc) I don't think you made excuses for Percy. I obviously read his letter very similarly to you, and I am not a Percy stan!

Wow, I'm not used to watching you on a bigger screen. It was more than one time, that I tried to like a comment you just read, and ended up just pausing your video... let's blame tired-jetlegged brain, rather than me just having small brain in general... "The twins are just as career oriented as Percy" Veg, I've never seen it that way, but you're absolutely right! Thinking about it, all the older Weasley kids are VERY ambitious when it comes to their career. Percy is the only one where it is super evident, since he chose a more traditional career path, but Bill and Charlie are successful in their chosen path, and the twins put all their focus on their entrepreneurial endeavors. Will Smith is not the greatest actor who ever walked the earth by a long shot, but there is more to him than just the good acting of Bel Air and Men in Black. I'd suggest watching either The Pursuit of Happyness (if you're ready to have your guts wrenched) or Hancock (imo absoluetly an underrated movie that shows more range than you'd expect from a rather silly story line. And yes, I know that choice is controversial) You're Leon recreation jump scared the heck out of me! Traditional german apple strudel isn't vegan due to the butter in the batter. To simplify it: it's basically a puff pastry that is rolled out so thinly you are able to see through it - which is a pain to do and very prone to ripping! So you can totally make a vegan apple strudel (just use a vegetable spread instead of butter), I just wouldn't recommend making a strudel by hand if you want to stay sane…

Concerning racism in the Wizarding World. Sorry, for comment spamming, but I want to make it its own comment, since it is an interesting topic. So here is my take: For one, it is surprisingly difficult to define when something "counts" as racism. It is not as clear cut as some people believe, and is debated a lot in the real world. In the magical world they clearly don't seem to discriminate against colour of skin or country of origin. A few examples: we have the canonically black Slytherin Blaise, there is never a mention of slurs being thrown at the Patil sisters (who very obviously are of south asian decent), during the fourth book there was just school rivalry but no negative feelings towards the french or eastern europeans, etc. BUT I would make the argument that this society is still deeply racist. They separate by "blood status" and human vs "half-human". The deatheaters, Malfoy and his posse, Umbridge - they are all 100% racist! So here is how I read Pansys comment about Angelinas hair (who btw is described as a "tall, black girl with braided hair" in the books, since you wondered): We read that comment as racist, due to our understanding of the word. But I don't think Pansys thoughts were rooted in racism. It is just an example of her not being smart enough to come up with a good heckle. So what does she do to participate? She reverts to superficial comments about Angelinas looks. That does not mean that Pansy isn't a racist, just that I would argue that that comment wasn't racist in that world.

[Spoilers, do not read my reply Veggie] I'm not sure where Lucius is said to be younger than Snape, but we get a pretty good idea of the age difference in the Prince's tale : when Snape, Lily and the Marauders arrive at Hogwarts for their first year Lucius is already a prefect, so he is either 4 years, 5 years or 6 years older than them.

Oh, I might have mixed that one up then. Thank you for correcting me! I'm gonna delete that part to not confuse Veggie.

Yeah I think the Wizarding World's prejudice is based on 'blood status' rather than ethnicity.

I agree that Harry and Hermione would be compatible in principle. That I really never saw any romantic feelings between them (especially in the books). And I'm really glad they didn't end up together because I think in fiction in general we so rarely get to see a deep friendship between a male and a female character that doesn't at least at some point involve them having romantic feelings (whether it works out or not). So I really love getting to see some representation of the fact that it is possible for people to just be friends🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Hard agree! I so love to see a portrayal of a true friendship between a boy and a girl. I'm honestky sometimes frustrated that most media seems to be unable to imagine that a boy and a girl could really like each other but not want to hook up🙄😒

Obviously Fred and George have confronted Draco. Heck, George and Harry had a fist fight with him last book (or, as McGonagall called it, a muggle duel).

Alias93

[Spoilers, do not read this Veggie] I think you got the order of the events in the books confused, at this point we have never seen Fred and George interact directly with Draco.

Alias93

More precisely, the specific event you're referring to happens later in THIS book, not last book, so it would be better to not talk about it at all.

Finally caught up with finishing listening to the book club. the quote was from whistle and I'll come to you M R James adaptation now part of the BBCs ghost stories for Christmas that they did in the 60's and 70's. The caravan at Berwick was chilly due to heating not working the evening when I arrived but was fixed quickly when i reported at reception the next day, was a four hour coach trip plus a 45 min bus ride to Leeds. Berwick's a nice place if you like history it's a Elizabethan walled town with some nice pubs and restaurants and a nice microbrewery, went to Edinburgh it was heaving even though it was tipping it down, there was just too many people for it to be enjoyable. The haven caravan site I stayed at is right on the edge of Berwick cost 140 to rent an 8 bed caravan for a week so was great value considering local hotels cost about 60 a night also the caravans are dog friendly so there were a lot of pet owners around. Not sure the interpretation of the dig at the hair is racist as there is no mention of the characters race, very few characters are actually given a racial description in the first edition uk books apart from the Parvati twins and Kingsley though apparently some different versions/editions of the books have racial descriptions of characters and others don't witch is weird.
