I can't even remember how long it's been since I've seen this movie 🥰

Such a good, wholesome movie. Come for the wacky alien menace and stay for the surprisingly deep and heartfelt family drama and excellent child character writing.

It is a widely accepted and popular fan theory that Lilo is a neurodivergent/autistic, because she demonstrates many of the signs and symptons that lean towards it. She's become somewhat of a hero in that community, even though it's never directly stated by the directors that she is. I'm one of those who accept the theory. Also, the pictures she takes is of tourists. It's showing the reverse, as we would go over and take pictures being on vacation, she is taking pictures of the tourists doing whateve they're doing. Pudge controls the weather, because she doesn't want anyone else to die like her parents, as it's stated that they died on a drive on a rainy night. This is such a fantastic movie. The live action really doesn't do it justice. It completely loses its meaning.

Steven

The directors of this movie also went on to direct the how to train your dragon movies and stitch is voiced by one of them!

LouShirley

I completely forgot how much Elvis was in this! I love it 😂

Rey's Got Plans

Really loved the streaming of this! Something so important in all of classic disney is the music! Even if it's not something they've written, like here, it's woven into the story almost like another character! Can't wait for more old classic Disney (and Pixar!)

Oh that was so much fun. Yes, this is a crying movie for me too! Altho for me it is Nani singing to Lilo in the hammock, and then again when Stitch says, “this is my family… it’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah. Still good.” 😭😭😭😭😭😭 TYSM for name dropping Pete’s Dragon at the end there because I would have been wondering for weeks where I knew that musical phrase from!

The bad guy is American Child Services. Not Bubbles specifically, but social services as an entity. The US would rather take a child who who has lost both her parents away from her SISTER than to help that sister with social service resources. Just move that child away from FAMILY to strangers And here's the kicker.....the foster family will receive monthly checks to take care of that child. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Social services can pay foster families literal monthly stipends...but cant help a 18 years old sister sacrificing EVERYTHING for her younger sister.

Isis Peoples

I know we get a happy ending assisted by our local favorite aliens....but stories like this happen all the time. And they are not happy

Isis Peoples

And yes the house caught fire and this was movie extreme fueled by ailens......but in real life it doesn't take much for social services to take children. Soemtimes mothers/fathers/caretakers can be unfit......most of them just need help

Anastasia is often mistaken for a Disney movie, but it's from Fox/Don Bluth! There's actually a pretty good video on Youtube by YMS that proves Disney didn't steal the Lion King from Kimba the White Lion. "nani" means "what" in Japanese!

CR Ash

One of my favorite movies of all time, everyone knows how it feels to be the Ugly Ducking

PumpkinSparks

Obviously Disney didn't steal from Kimba, they stole from Shakespeare! Lion King is Hamlet, just with lions and a more positive message - they chose to focus on redemtion rather than revenge!

Unpopular opinion incoming: I don't really like this movie! Please don't hate me Weirdly, I love about 80% of this (and I mean LOVE it), but all the alien bits destroy that. I think they are annoying and needless for the story and they take me out completely... If this movie was called "Ohana" and it stayed focused on Lilo and Nani struggling, and the end was not "alien law overruled our burrocracy" but them learning from each other and showing the outside world that they are okay should stay together, then this would absolutely be in my top 10 of all movies. I wouldn't even mind Stitch still being there (so Disney can sell their plushies) if he was something like the imaginary friend Lilo created to cope with the whole situation or so. For me that would be a way more interesting movie. And it's such a shame, cause the (human) characters are just perfection! Bubbles is just doing his job and he is right to do it. It is evident that he feels for Nanis situation, but he has to take Lilos well being first. And his scenes are freaking hilarious! ... his CIA twist at the end feels a bit shoe horned to make everything work, but if there were no alien, we wouldn't have to do that. David should be on everyones list of male role models. Yes, he is in love with Nani. But she turned him down and he doesn't sulk, or stop being nice, or feels like she owes him because he helped out, or anything. He stays, because he is also her friend. And he cares deeply for Lilo. He truly is what a good man ought to be. Lilo is a perfect description for a little kid who is old enough to understand what happend to her parents, but does not know how to cope with it. So she is acting out! Also I am one of the people who is 100% on board with her being on the spectrum and think her an amazing and acurate portayal how that can look like. And Nani? Nani is YES!!! First of all, finally a realistically drawn woman - she has some squishy bits and she has hips and her figure isn't perfect, but she is gorgeous! And then she was put in an impossible situation. She is still a kid herself and suddenly she has to take care of this child who is deeply traumatized. And she truly does her best! And while she struggles and tries to keep the family together against all odds, she never blames Lilo for anything. That girl lost her job (which she needs to buy food and stuff, but is also vital to keep Lilo) because of Lilo and Stitch, but doesn't scold Lilo rather plays into her world ("my boss was a vampire, who wanted to recruit me"), because she knows that Lilo didn't mean any harm. She doesn't understand Lilos weird obsessions, but she never makes her feel weird about them and indulges them (like getting the photos developed). When she says "I'm the only one who understands her" it is the truest scentence uttered in the whole movie! Nani is queen!!!

I didn't want to do 2 comments in a row, but I really want to add this but it thematically doesn't fit at all in my other (ranty) comment... You're take on Myrtle took me by surprise! You're probably just way more empathetic than I am. But Lilo attacked her after Myrtle called her crazy (yes, Lilos reaction wasn't good, but I get it!) When Lilo apologized without a grown up next to her making her do it, Myrtle outright refused all of it. When Lilo tried to assimilate into what they are interested in, she didn't just shun her but made Lilo feel abnormal. And it wasn't stated in the movie, but I got the impression that this kind of behaviour was the norm. Myrtle is a bully!

Elinaboo

I love the deep meaning of the movie. Lilo is very young, they just lost their parents and I heard someone say she has autism. So keeping in mind that she might not understand her emotions because of her age and the autism, its not weird that she is acting out and attacking Mertle. Especially when Mertle is calling Lilo out for giving a peanut butter sandwitch to Pudge the fish. Lilo did not give Pudge the fish the Sandwitch on the day her parents died, so she believes Pudge made it rain and caused the crash that killed her parents. Hence the "Pudge controls the weather" comment from her. (Not sure if this is a fandom theory, but I like it.) Imagine how hard it must be for Nani being the caregiver all of the sudden. She did lose her parents too after all. So she is batteling grief, responsibility, and has to learn how to deal with Lilo's emotions as well. It is so damn sweet that after Nani hears Lilo's wish for a friend who will never leave, perhaps an angel, the nicest angel you have, that she takes Lilo to the pet store to get a dog <3 Nani clearly thought dogs are angels and will keep Lilo company when she has to work and be away from her so much! I like that we have Stitch as the "outsider" of the family so we can get to know the sisters with him. The fact that he was created to be evil and destroy everything he touches, but changes with his new family is so sweet. It is also very adorable to see Lilo tell him that she knows why he is acting out, because of all the emotions he can't understand within, because she does the same. Even more cute that she tries to correct his bad behavior when he acts out, because she knows its bad to shove, bite and punch someone in the face, just like she did. I do wish Mertle and her girlies would accept Lilo's apology, since they are at that young age and when someone say they are sorry, they usually hug and make up because of the apology. However there must be more to the story there, since Lilo said to Nani that everyone treats her differently. Would be nice to see if Lilo and Mertle (or the other girls) could look past their different interests and be friends. I think Lilo wanted and needs friends. So heres to hoping that they realized their stupid behavior (because of their age) in the future, and is now friends!

Steven

Another thing that I dont think gets noticed enough is that Nani was likely going to become a professional surfer since we can see a plethora of surfing trophies in her bedroom but she had to give up her dream once their parents died

veggie have you ever seen the elvis movie with austin butler? if you love elvis, i think you’d enjoy it. i watched that movie every night for a week straight when it came out and i rarely see reactors pay it any attention.

Somedude Watchintv

People say Lion King is Hamlet but it's much closer to Richard the 3rd which has it's own version of Timon and Pumba whose philosophy is explicitly rejected rather than embraced.

VeggieGamer

Oh I love Elvis music, but have never watched any of his films! Would be an awesome gear change to do so, though! :)

CR Ash

I don't know if you realized Veggie but this movie took place in Hawaii, thats why Lilo took pictures of people, they are tourists who take pictures of the locals all the time because they are visiting Hawaii so Lilo takes pictures of them in return, its also why its so funny that Stitch landed on the one island with no big cities in the middle of the ocean

CR Ash

Also Elvis loved Hawaii so I think his music's involvement was also due to that

Methanoutput

I have only seen this movie a year ago myself! Gonna watch it again with you :)

Joel Rivera

Lilo is definitely written to be neurodivergent. Along with the line you pointed out, at the beginning of the movie she says "people treat me different", so I'm glad you noticed that about her character.

Brendan Coen

The “antagonist” is just the death of their parents. It’s just the fallout of that tragedy. How can you expect two sisters to recover smoothly from something like that. The broken family had to heal and stitch and David both played a part in it. I watched this so many times when I was 7-8 yrs old. I spoke in that stitch voice 24/7. Still my favorite ❤️

itsanursething

A little behind the scenes fun: Stitch was never supposed to be able to speak, and one of the writers had to be convinced to do his voice! In Hawaiian, Lilo can mean “generous one” or refer to something that is “lost”. Two changes were made to the animation. One that I don’t understand is in the Disney + version, but not the one you watched! When Lilo is hiding from Nani early on, she hid in the dryer (which we saw in this version). Disney ended up changing it so she hides in a cabinet instead. The major change that I understand more is from the end of the movie. Jumba’s red ship that you love so much, was originally supposed to be a Boeing 747 that they hijacked and flew through Honolulu, nearly hitting buildings. But the movie came out in 2002, so they felt after 9/11, it wasn’t the best idea 😬 Disney channel had an animated series for Lilo & Stitch that ran for 2 seasons. They also did a sequel movie. I don’t remember that one very well, but the series was so fun! Lots more Jumba and Pleakley!

"I'll remember you tho. I remember everyone that leaves" makes me tear up EVERY TIME my god
