SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I don't know if it shows, but I was a little down and low energy before recording this episode because of life stuff, that bloomin' bird definitely woke me up!! XD

Awesome episode, what a different side of the Earth Kingdom (and incredibly, the Water Tribe)!

Very interested to meet this new mystery character (and of course her.. flying pig?)!

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

Nice job catching the mask at the beginning. I've seen a lot of people miss it. Also, this won't be the last time that we'll see an unusual bending style like the swamp style water bending.

I love irohs song at the beginning, its a long long way to ba sing se but the girls in the city they look so pretty! The girls from ba sing se sound lovely lol. The visions were so sad, kataras especially, she was so excited. Of course aangs was just curious, I remember thinking the same as you though that maybe its someone from a past life but it makes more sense for him that thats why the swamp called him there, to show him someone he will meet.

With the correct levels of Guinness in my system i can do quite a good banjo cover of deliverance dueling banjos

VeggieGamer

That is awesome!! I wish I could play something like the banjo (I never worked out how to 'strum upwards', which is a bit of a problem XD)

Pretty sure the bird screaming was a Citizen Kane reference! Orson Welles famously cut from a quiet scene to a shot of a screaming parrot. When asked what the symbolism of that was, he replied, "That was to wake up the audience."

VeggieGamer

Oh wow!! Great call! I haven't seen Citizen Kane, but I know exactly what you are referring too (I think it was brought up in a Mr. Plinkett star wars video? XD).

This show gets really creative in their bending styles. I really like magic systems where the straight forward application is asteblished and then they start to think "what would possibly be doable? Sure they can manipulate water, but whatelse has enough water and is pliable enough to be bendable?" And we already saw that with firebending and lightning. What do you think are other more niche ways of bending? I like where they went here in the end, but I really do wish that Iroh would have calmly put that asshat in his place. I love how easy going Iroh is and that he doesn't take himself or his title serious (and most of the time I agree with him, it doesn't really matter!), but that was just humiliating! And it had nothing to do with being humble. He should have set up his boundaries and quipped back with kindness and humour like only Iroh can...

A lot of people get confused by this episode since its in the earth kingdom and they are wearing green, but all the swamp people are water benders. The guy with the plant monster said he bends the water in the vines. Which I think is really cool bit of world expansion, he doesn't bend the vines cus he is a vine bender, he can move the vines because he controls the water in them, which is fascinating because its a creative and indirect way to use water as an element.

VeggieGamer

Thanks Sab! I definitely got confused about that guy!

jolt45

You might have missed it but the guy that attacked the Gaang with vines is named Hue. Due refers to him by name after they come to save Appa and Sokka looks at Hue in disbelief and says "Hue?!". Also, bending water in plants is just as huge as knowing there are water benders here. We haven't seen water bending like that before and it opens the door to many...possibilities.

Imo the next episode is the last "meh"-episode of the entire series, so yay! 😁 Also around when the YouTube algorithm really kicks in, so double yay 😁😁

I really like that Avatar gives us so many episodes with different atmospheres, it never gets boring. I like that we have our Gaang and to see our Appa and Momo teamed up. And you are right, noone likes to see Appa like this!

Embran

Seriously? Avatar Day and for sure The Painted Lady aren´t exactly high flyers either. Veggie will like them, maybe even love them, but I despise them! It´s unfortunate Avatar Day the one introducing the coolest Avatar and has another example of iroh´s wisdom. Still doesn´t excuse actions of the main characters or ridiculous plot development. I always play Devil´s advocate when I claim i like the Great Divide more than both of them. And many people (not me) dislike The Beach and even The Headband.

Erica

I like that this episode introduces more complexity and nuance into this world without completely spoon-feeding them to us. The bending styles have been discussed in the comments already, but also you have water benders from a swamp in the earth kingdom far from any tundra, suggesting possible migration. I can totally imagine some ancient water tribe ppl journeying far from home for whatever reason, finding the swamp, and just choosing to stay there. They certainly have the upper hand against any earth benders who might take issue with them, and with so little dry land, a swamp is hardly prime real estate for earth benders anyway. The water benders probably wouldn’t venture far from the swamp for too long themselves, and so now we have a little isolated culture all its own.

Brendan Coen

I love whenever the groups diverge and inevitably meet up again. Crossing a few times to finally converge.

Lisette C.

Well, for one, I *did* say "in my opinion", lol x) And I also said that the *next* episode is the last "meh"-one imo :P I happen to like both the Painted Lady, the Beach and the Headband ;)

I hope you are well Veg! Real life is extremely hard, I hope things look up!!

Don't focus too much on the color of clothes. Sometimes it doesn't match up. Like in the Kyoshi Island episode it featured earth kingdom citizens wearing blue. Song also wore red despite being Earth Kingdom as well. It's pretty interesting lore wise, the swamp benders wear green because their clothing are fashioned from the plants around them.
