So, I don't want to spoil my reaction but... I think this is definitely one of the very best episodes in the entire show. I absolutely loved it. It was hilarious and completely heartbreaking throughout.

Cassie was amazing. What a great performance by the actor. Definitely one of the side characters I have been most invested in.

This one completely got me! Loved it. <3

Hope you are well, lovelies!!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Note - her name is AZURA, not Azula (been watching too much Avatar, cearly XD)

Absolutely one of my favourite episodes, Cassies story is heartbreaking. Easily a top 3 for me

Maia Brodsky

I guess I'm a bit confused. You used to call Buffy out for beating on Spike back in seasons 4 and 5. Then, when they started having sex, she got even more gratuitous with her violence toward him, whereas he didn't hit her once while they were 'together'. Now, you say you found her beating him up funny last season. I always found her treatment of him very disturbing, just as his treatment of her was.

VeggieGamer

Really? So sorry about this, Maia! I genuinely thought I didn't mind her hitting him in season 6 (which I thought I prefaced here, but maybe I didn't). I guess I haven't changed, but for some reason that moment felt different to me (maybe because I had forgotten my previous videos. Sorry, I'll need to check them back). I loved this episode, sorry if that take ruined it!

Maia Brodsky

Well yeah, it seems that you indeed didn't mind it in season 6, which is my point. I find that odd. You were bothered by it in earlier seasons (episode 5x2, for example), and I was grateful for you acknowledging it back in those reactions, bc many reactors don't call it out. But you weren't bothered by it season 6, when it was way worse, when she was beating up her sexual partner. Season 6 is where I really struggled to stomach Buffy's behavior toward him, and it's where I often see viewers who were previously ambivalent to her actions toward him start to call her out for it.

VeggieGamer

I guess I got it wrong. Sorry Maia. I have said before about maybe not giving my opinions on the spike situation anymore. I don't want them to railroad the discussion on my reactions. I'll take check and fix it. Hope you still enjoyed some parts of the video, though I understand if that take did sour it.

Maia Brodsky

I'm not trying to railroad anything. I just felt compelled to express my confusion because I've always felt that you had a kind and sensitive take with these characters, so it's jarring to hear that you found it funny. Domestic violence is an issue that I'm fairly sensitive about, and I guess that's why I found your comment somewhat upsetting.

VeggieGamer

Oh I am not saying you are railroading anything, sorry!! I am saying I have with my takes! I would never make light of domestic violence and have suffered it in the past. I honestly didn't see the Spike situation like that last season, and that is on me (demon or not, it just wasn't how I approached it at the time). I am sorry if I have come across as unkind or insensitive in these videos. I am truly sorry, this was never my intention. I promise you this is not something I would normally take lightly, and if I have done here, I am truly regret it.

VeggieGamer

100% EDITED COMMENT - I was having a very bad night, sorry lovelies~

Katie

Hi Veggie. I'm so sorry you went through that. This is your channel and you should react to the shows you watch in a way that feels natural to you. This is just one person with their own opinion on your reaction. I can't see anyone else saying they feel this way. You should be able to watch a fun vampire show without fear of being chastised for your own valid opinions. Please don't feel bad for enjoying this episode or for anything else you said in the past that was an honest reaction. 🙂

Maia Brodsky

How so? That was certainly not my intention, Veggie, I'm sorry if you took it as an attack against you. I don't mean to imply your perspective is invalid, I'm simply a bit bewildered by it. I'm genuinely curious and want to understand it. When you used to lament how Spike was treated by Buffy and the others in earlier seasons, I suppose I just assumed that when season 6 came around, you would at least partially share my perspective regarding the mutually abusive nature of Buffy and Spike's relationship, and call them both out for it at some point. I'm probably in the minority there, and obviously it's fine that my assumption turned out to be wrong. It's NOT something most people tend to acknowledge anyway, maybe because it's hard to come down on the protagonist, but I find flawed-Buffy quite fascinating, so it's no knock against her as a character on my part. It's just that most people don't tend to sympathize with Spike's chip predicament (being helpless, getting bullied, etc. a couple seasons ago) the way you did either, so I thought you might end up sharing some of my perspective on the how badly Buffy treats him for a large chunk of season 6. But again, I'm the one who made the assumption, and there's likely some missing piece of your perspective that I'm just not getting that's causing my confusion. And like I said in my previous reply, I'm probably just being overly sensitive because of the subject matter. But that doesn't mean you said anything wrong. Your opinion is no less valid than mine - I was simply trying to understand it. Please don't feel bad. We're all discussing fiction at the end of the day. It's good to have disagreements and it's ok if we don't always understand each other. Please don't feel like you have to apologize for your opinions.

Maia Brodsky

Veggie, I apologize for making you feel this way. It was never meant as a personal attack against you. Your comment in the video hit a sore spot for me, and I was just trying to understand your perspective better. I didn't know it was a sensitive topic for you as well. I won't comment on your Buffyverse reactions from now on. My comments distressed you instead of what I intended, which was to spark a dialogue on the topic. I definitely never meant to insinuate anything about you as a person. As I said before, I've always seen your kindness and empathy, otherwise I wouldn't have tried to converse with you about it in the first place. I grew up with the show, so it has always held deeper meaning to me than just teens fighting vampires, but that doesn't mean it's going to have that kind of depth for you, of course. It certainly doesn't matter at all compared to the importance of your mental health, or mine for that matter. Sorry again. I really never meant to make you feel any kind of way.

Loved this episode so much and loved your heartfelt reaction. Cassie was played so tenderly by Azura Skye. And SMG so clearly portrays Buffy's fear, frustration, confusion, and heroism. Even if at the end of the day she couldn't save Cassie, she still made a difference by trying and sometimes that's all you can do. Just keep showing up and trying each day, just be there for people. I love that this show lets us see transformations happen on both supernatural (chaotic, out of our control) levels and very human levels (the changes people can decide to make every single day), and both can be life-changing. Just edited to add: All incarnations of The Beatles are great in their own way and Help! is an amazing pop song. I could discuss this subject for literally hours 😆

I am a new watcher of yours (no un-punny way to phrase it that I can think of right now) and just wanted to chime in; I really love your empathy, attention, and enjoyment, and plan to watch in full from the beginning. This show means so much to me, and so many other people. I think one of its great strengths is sparking complex conversations. Some of those topics may be personally upsetting to you, and that’s completely understandable: I’m sure most of your subscribers will respect that, because it seems like you’ve cultivated a passionate and highly empathetic community here. For me, Buffy is constantly challenging my beliefs and opinions as I watch in different stages of my life. Everyone is coming here to talk within the confines of their own highly specific moments, you included. I also experienced abuse, and in this stage of my life, I find that storyline to be very cathartic in its honesty - but I’ve had so much time to think about and revisit the show, and my emotions have evolved. Nobody has the “right” opinion, and that’s what makes these stories so intriguing and powerful. As long as you are coming from a place of curiosity and kindness, the people in this community will continue to do the same. And that’s all I’ve seen from you, so far!

Maia - I am really sorry about how I reacted. I was having a very bad day where basically everything was going wrong, and I was really worried I had come off badly in my reactions to previous Spike moments, and felt very guilty. PLEASE feel free to continue commenting as usual!! I would feel awful if I have made you feel you can't be a part of the conversation. I think my problem is I haven't had time to think though what I am saying, as the events of the end of season 6 feel very fresh to me (and I know everyone, there have been other examples of SA in the show, I am not saying it is the only time, I am specifically talking about THIS occasion). It is very possible I will change my mind, and I thought I already had done until seeing your comment about my being different in season 4 and 5, which I would have to go back and watch. Again, please please please feel free to continue to comment, the comments is the main reason I do this stuff (I am not the most social person in RL XD), and I would like you to continue to be a part of that. :) Katie & M.R. - Thank so you much for your kind words. :)

By complete coincidence, this is the episode where Willow says "Have you Googled her yet?", which I discovered last week is the first cited usage of that verb in media- I assumed it was a much earlier one, from Hacker Willow era Buffy XD

Jake M

Just got to the end of the reaction, it was me that mentioned it in the comments of the previous reaction, genuinely had no idea it was coming up this week! 😅 It probably helped propagate the usage (like Friends did with 'friendzone'), but I highly doubt that Willow was the very first person in the world to use it- just the first to use it in television/film/radio/literature!

Mr. Home Improvement had to be involved in shenanigans. He was too well known at the time to be completely random, and his name was at the beginning. Azura Skye was in a number of things around that time.

I cannot express enough how much I appreciate Azura Skye as a character actor. My favorite performance by her is as a patient on the show House. She plays a young woman who is hallucinating her deceased Russian mother. It is an absolutely FANTASTIC episode in my opinion. House is another show I would strongly encourage you to watch although you don't really have any procedural dramas on the channel so maybe it wouldn't fit with this audience. It stars Hugh Laurie which would be an interesting juxtaposition for you. Most Americans know him from House which can certainly be funny, but it is primarily a drama, not a comedy.
