SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Genuinely think this may be the saddest I have felt after watching an episode. Such great character building, going in a direction I never could have guessed!

Thank goodness for Katara taking the lead here, and thank goodness for Sokka providing us with SOMETHING to laugh at!

I will be fasinated to see where this goes next (well.. we know WHERE it is going...).

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

Okay, I need to comment this before I start the episode. You mentioned Critical Role, so my head will automatically jerk up like a meerkat hearing some noise! Yeah, you totally made the right connection!!! Marisha Ray is a HUGE Avatar fan! She very deliberately created the Ashari, the Aramenté (traveling the world to learn each element), and Keyleth with the idea of Avatar in mind. They even managed to score an Avatar voice actor to voice her mother in the animated series! Even Beau has some Avatar influence - though it's more asthetics. Lookwise Beau is basically a female Sokka ;) It's even more pronounced in the animated series. A lot of reactors, who didn't watch the campaign, wondered what Sokka is doing in that show the first time they saw her, and a lot called her "female Sokka" for the first episode or two XD

I ran and put on my cactus juice shirt for this episode. Nothings quenchier, its the quenchiest! When you were watching the bitter work episode and you were saying how if they don't tell you how iroh was doing you will quit, and I said this time we got the answer right away in the next episode but please don't stop watching if they leave a cliffhanger like that and don't solve it first thing, I was thinking of this arch, sorry no appa yet. Katara is so amazing in this episode. I love how she just reaches out for Aang and pulls him close to calm him down. Finally we are all headed to ba sing se! "Its a long long way to ba sing se but the girls in the city they look so pretty." 🎶 🎵

Alex Hopps

I know i know i know, but ive never lied to you yet. The rest of this book just continues to get better and better

Cari Ann

We are heading to ba sing se to talk to the earth king and tell him about the day of black sun. Just a reminder from last episode lol.

Shadowwolf21687

Those flying creatures are called Buzzard Wasps.

BakaSama

Vox Machina/Mighty Nein reactions when?! lol Buckle up for the Ba Sing Se arc, that is just all SMILES…

VeggieGamer

I am 100% up for Vox Machina! I will have to be careful with Mighty Nein as I am still watching the show, but I am making pretty good progress (I think like 20 episodes in the last month? XD). But if I can get assurance there are no spoilers/teases for future events, that is fine! :)

BakaSama

My understanding is that they changed up the Mighty Nein some to where it doesn't exactly follow the Campaign so even people who watched the original Campaign can still be surprised. I've also heard that the first few episodes at least are essentially Session 0 and original to the animated series. I can't say for certain as I only made it as far as part way into Session One of Campaign Two before just deciding to wait for the animated series.

The scenes of Sokka and Momo high on cactus juice lives rent free in my head. Every once in a while Sokka appears randomly in my brain doing the air worm thingy, and I immediately feel better! XD Earth angel also sometimes pops into my brain, and I giggle on the inside But yeah, this is such an extraordinary and heart wrenching episode! Katara for sure was the MVP here. And she is just 15! She had to grow up so early and so fast, and this episode really chose her motherly side, but also how she tends to put her needs last. Did you see that everytime she gave the others water, she gave THEM water. First time she divded it in 3, and we saw Momo tasting the swamp water. So she didn't take any. And the other time she made 4 baubles - at that time Aang was there as well! Aang is probably the most human hero ever written. His emotions are just so real. The writers don't forget that he has trauma he hasn't worked through yet, that people have good and bad moments, and that he is 12! He does not know yet how to regulate his emotions all the time (granted most grown ups don't know that either...), he sometimes makes very impulsive decisions, he lashes out when upset. It's just so well written!!!

Zachary Herrick

We’re heading to Ba Sing Se firstly to deliver the news of the solar eclipse to the Earth King. Sokka mentioned that last episode when they found the info. Secondly, we are heading there because the sand bender just mentioned that Appa was sold to a merchant and is probably in Ba Sing Se by now.

PumpkinSparks

I can concur! The shows vary from the campaigns somewhat. I have only watched the first 2 episodes of M9 so far (not because they were not amazing, it's just brain stuff not cooperating...) and M9 differs even more from the campaign than VM did. They did start with session 0 and prequel comic stuff for the most part, but they also incorporated several things that happen way later already. Knowing now where you are in the campaign, I would not recommend starting with M9 until you watched it through. There is one character in particular that will totally be spoiled for you if you watch the series now. That being said, VM also starts with a pre-stream storyline!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Zachary! I should have clarified, I wasn't sure why we were heading there before Appa was stolen, as I had forgotten Sokka's line. Naturally, I understood why we are heading there now, regarding Appa. :)

Jes

Iroh and Zuko are heading to BaSing Se to hide as refugees from the Fire Nation. Ang and the gang want to get there because its the most powerful unconquered nation

Lord-LemonHead

Me on my way to comment "this is where it gets really good!" on the book 3 finale

Madikuma95

🌵🧃 It'll quench ya!

Cinnamon troll

Oh god, this episode... This one is hard for me to watch and I always cry when Katara hugged Aang in the end. The bit when he hit the creature for retribution, the sweet, empathetic Aang we know... It goes against his very own nature and culture. The contrast is horrifying. I remember someone saying that in this episode all characters lost their greatest strength to the desert: Toph – her sight, Sokka – his intelligence and Aang – his kindness. Except for Katara who selflessly and desperately held everything together! I love this episode but it's so heartbreaking. I'll go cry now, thanks for the reaction (╥﹏╥)

Alex Hopps

Oh mate, hate to see you sad. There may be many more tsars left to cry before the end of this journey but there's also so much brilliance, smiles and laughter to be had along the way and i promise you this, before this yearis over you will be saying this is one of your favourite shows you've ever watched! Ps. Im sat jn the car crying too

Kael Johnsen

I wouldnt say aang is overreacting... but that reason will be get its explanation in a few episodes

Maia Brodsky

I think justice is the word for giving people what they deserve, whereas revenge, vengeance, and retribution all refer to getting payback for personal reasons. The Gaang are heading to Ba Sing Se to tell the Earth King about the solar eclipse info they found in the library. Zuko and Iroh are heading there because it's the best place to hide from the Fire Nation. Looking forward to the rest of Book Two!

loftypenalty91

This is definitely one of the saddest episodes in the show. I also don't think that Aang overreacted. Appa is his best friend and the only connection he has to his people. They're not officially a two parter, but the next two episodes were originally released together. So, you might want to consider watching them together.

T_phoenix

Try to avoid "previously on" on next episode.

Celle

This is such a strong episode. Aang is 12 years old and such a nicht kid... imagine what he could do if he just wanted to... its scary. And tbh, its Not overreacted for me because its Appa. Its best friend who survived the Iceberg with Aang together... its heartbreaking.

krfix

I won't get too into detail, because it will be explored a little further soon, but if you remember, Aang called appa his animal guide, in Book 1, Ch. 7 The Winter Solstice Pt. 1. Every avatar has one, so when Aang went into avatar state after hearing appa was muzzled, it's because every past avatar completely understood his pain at that moment.

jolt45

There are 20 episodes in Book 1, 20 in Book 2, and 21 in Book 3. That means this episode (31st overall) is the exact midpoint of the series. Its also a massive turning point for Aang but in what ways we will see in the coming weeks. Also, I need to shout this out as an absolute top tier Katara episode.

James McCarthy

Great episode love Iroh playing some cards up his sleeve. Aang giving hints of the avatar states wrath is chilling but cool in all of that my favourite reaction is Tophs she is used to Aang being this cheery chap with talent but so passive and she has never been presence for the avatar state before now she hears him and likely senses that raw power and rage while her face just shows shock bording on fear

Erica

I know others have already said this, but Aang’s demeanor and choices here are first off, totally in line with an insanely powerful child who is still learning emotional intelligence and just had someone extremely close and important to him stolen. And secondly, at the same time, they are intentionally quite chilling as Aang is from a culture that deeply values and respects life, to the point of being generally vegetarian (Aang himself has stated he doesn’t eat meat). Shocking? Yes. Sad? Extremely. Scary? For sure. So out of left field that it’s unrealistic? Given the circumstances, sadly no. And all of that together is why this show is SO GOOD UGH

Rey's Got Plans

So glad you also gave Katara your appreciation this episode, so many people pick Katara as their least fave of the group but she is incredible, and it doesnt deel like it becuase we havent spent that much time in it so far but the desert is huge... I dont even know if Aang could make it out flying without becoming dehydrated and severely ill, without Katara their chances of surviving getting out of the desert at all are significantly reduced! Plus, she was so calm and focused and kind with Aang, she didnt take anything personally and she didnt feel resentment over being the only one focused on getting out alive, she took it all on her shoulders and kept everyone together when so many others wouldve fallen apart, turned on eachother, and probably not survived! Also, Sokka and Momo are iconic 🥲

STAYoung

Not an essential two parter in my opinion. Doing them separately just means next week will have a greater anticipation

loftypenalty91

I disagree, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Kael Johnsen

Is it the next two episodes that are double? I bellive so,,that by mistanke they made next episode a two parter without it actually being one.

T_phoenix

Two totally different stories with cliffhanger in between. Watching them separately makes sense

loftypenalty91

He can watch them however he wants. I was merely pointing out the fact that the episodes were originally released together. Meaning that the show creators felt that they should be watched together too.

Catherine Nance

Veggie please stop apologizing for the long intros. I'm here because I want to hear your thoughts. If I didn't want your commentary I would just go watch Avatar on my own. This episode is sad but Aang's behavior is understandable. He's 12 years old and already lost so much. Appa is pretty much all he has left of his life before his nap in the iceberg. Yes Bumi is still alive and Momo is a descendent of the lemurs he knew but its not the same. Appa was with Aang when he went into the ice and has been with him this whole time. He's acting out like a child because he is. I like that we see him as a child that is upset and not just the playful carefree happy go lucky kid we've seen so far. It makes him seem more real. Yes he is the Avatar but he is still a human with human emotions.

Mistor

One small thing in this episode I like is Toph’s reaction to Aang in the avatar state because, this is the first time she sees that. And she’s totally dumbfounded.

Annabellae Priestly

Man I cannot WAIT for the next couple of episodes to drop. Please don't apologize for talking and sharing your thoughts - that's what we're here for! We love your "waffle" and your references and everything you bring to the table.

Jake M

Speaking of sand people, has your brother shown you Colony In Space with the Third Doctor yet? There's a pretty obvious inspiration for them in that serial!

VeggieGamer

Yes! We are currently doing a Delgado Masterthon, with something else every other time, and we checked out Colony pretty recently. Really enjoying Jo so far! :) She is great!

Jake M

Ah, I forgot it was a Master episode! 🤦🏼‍♂️ I just remember it has a young Gail Platt from Corrie , and the warriors on the mountains waving sticks above their heads! XD I think the Daemons is my favourite Delgado ep. Did you know the chant the master says is Mary Had A Little Lamb backwards? And one of the cultists is a young Matthew Corbett, the puppeteer from Sooty and Sweep!

Chimpman

Anyone commenting that it got split in two is objectively wrong. The only reason it looks cut is because of the resolution and quality of the show. The head stays attached the entire way. Anyone who thinks this is objectively incorrect. Look closer and look at the highest quality versions of the scene.
