"I think not" 🤣🤣

Notice how Zuko was first introduced in Book 1 as the 'evil' deformed/disfigured villain, whereas his father, Ozai, is designed to be attractive like most 'good guy' characters. I've always loved how they inverted this trope, which is still very common in media today.

So excited for the continuing adventures of Ong, Soh-kah and Eeroh! 😁

So if Aang was technically dead, does that mean there will be another Avatar who arrives in town with a dodgy Carribean accent? Before long they'll be killed, and a third will show up, try to fit in for a while, but be ostracised for accidentally killing a human and eventually help an evil mayor turn into a giant snake? 🤔 "They need to sort out the lighting in this palace, seriously." - Yeah, they need some of Giles' lamps!

It is so interesting that Aang in this episode pushes away everyone and then he has the scene with Katara which end in him saying "I need to regain my honor" and it immediatly switches to a Zuko scene! It literally switches from Aangs face to Zuko!!! Talk about great writing and storyboarding! I also really love the parallel of father-child reunion. We have Katara who has this really heartfelt moment with Hakoda, where she rightfully calls him out for abandoning them and how hard it was and that she logically understands why he did it, but emotionally she just feels abandoned and left on their own and they had to take on so much responsibility at such a young age because of that. And Hakoda - within a heartbeat - acknowledges her feelings and tries to console her and just hugs her. Because he truly loves his children and does in this situation what a good father should do. Juxteposed with the reunion of Zuko and Ozai (yes, he hot!) which is very formal and threatening towards Zuko (like, don't say the wrong word) and every kindness of Ozai feels very conditional...

On another note, concerning your comments on the earthbending scene of the movie: You might be right about the filmmakers intentions. But considering that literally everyone understands that scene as "these 6 people had to do a whole choreography just to float one rock" - they really missed their mark... And in general, in the show the bending feels very intuitive and flowing, while in the movie there were a lot of unnessecary flourishes that just made the bending feel very slow and work-intensive. So I feel that since the bending wasn't done all that well in general, that this one scene is pointed out as the worst atrocity of it all...

Quick comment on the movie: (as much as I love your reactions, Veggie, I cannot bring myself to watch the whole thing, that is time I'll never get back. I couldn't find the following in the comments so if it was already said, please ignore me.) Apparently, they planned to have some great CGI for the bending effects so the actors were told to make the movements that will later be filled with bending. But they ran out of money and had to cut the effects, hence the slowly levitating rock. I remember the trailer and it actually looked quite good. Another thing that explains A LOT in my opinion is that M. Night Shyamalan did NOT watch the damn show! At all! His kids love it and told him about it but he never managed to watch the whole thing and just wrote what he thought it should be. Edit: Veggie, when the Fire Nation army marched into Ba Sing Se, you missed the tea shop owner that Mushi and Lee first worked for and the girl Zuko went on a date with. Also, I vote "yes" on Korra. I see why people like or dislike it but I think you will definitely enjoy it. Maybe just on patreon?

This is the season of payoffs. Houston, we have absolute peak incoming!

One of my favorite transitions in the whole show is when Aang says he "must restore his honor," with a close-up on the left side of his face, and then it cuts to the right side of Zuko's face to show that there are still parallels between the characters. Honestly, Iroh, Zuko, Katara, and Sokka are my favorite characters of the show, and I'm so happy you love Zuko (well, less right now lol) and Katara so much.

Declan

Don't know if you noticed her but Jin (the girl Zuko dated while he was in Ba Sing Se) can be seen in the tea shop while the Fire Nation soldiers march past.

I know I'm in the minority but even as a child I thought it was ridiculous how they hid Ozai's face in books 1 and 2. It would only make sense if he was someone we knew and it was a twist (which of course it wouldn't be) or if he had some bad scar or something. But instead he is just....a dude, so it seems really unnecessary. It reminds me how in the first few episodes of Pokémon they hid Giovanni's (Team Rocket boss) face just to reveal it later and it also just being....a dude.

Maia Brodsky

No, earthbending cannot be used on wood.

Madikuma95

I think that's kinda the point, that someone so evil just looks like a normal guy.

felipeluzz

Oh but I'm not complaining about he looking like a regular guy. I'm complaining about they making a huge unnecessary mystery about it

Embran

I feel if we saw the reveal very early on and see Ozai´s face as regal yet amiable and ¨normal¨, we expect him to show cruelty in person to be convinced under the face lies the monster. But the writers choose to show the evil of his power and influence through the actions of the troops or through accounts of the population. The firelord as an evil symbol. Plus we don´t crave for his reveal that much, because focus is on Zuko and lately Azula. But now Zuko returns asthe prince who restored his honor and so we should see the firelord for being the person behind the scarring of the most important character besides Aang.

In the Book of Matthew, the Devil offer's Jesus the world, if he would but submit to him. This is mirrored a lot in fiction, where the villain makes an unbeatable offer to the protagonist. In this case, Azula offer's Zuko everything he's wanted for three years: his honor, his father's acceptance, his throne. Usually, the protagonist rejects the Devil's offer, but ATLA dares to ask: what happens when you accept? Book 3 explores Zuko's choice, and it's what separates ATLA from lesser shows.

CR Ash

Welcome back my glorious king 🙏🙏 So READY for this season!! Thank you for all you do Veggie!

Shadowwolf21687

Just to clarify on the names it’s Hakoda not Hakota for Sokka and Katara’s father The moon spirit’s name is Yue(You-A) not Oohway.

Shadowwolf21687

I forgot to add in my comment that I’m all in for the Korra reaction. I personally like Korra’s show more than Aang’s.

Diego Reckholder

Yes, please, do Legend of Korra, too!!!! i'll be commenting and liking every video if you do 😆 I mean, I LOVE ATLA, but Legend of Korra has a special place in my heart for how it deals with more mature subjects, especially in the later seasons.

26:54 you missed that beautiful transition between Aang and Zuko there when he mentions he needs his honor back

Deadshot1999

I still don't know how they found Aang at the end but I like to believe Yue helped/guided them.

My favorite subtle line from this episode is when Aang is talking to Roku. He says "everyone thinks Im dead again, and Im losing this war". I'M losing this war. Not "we're" losing or the Fire Nation is winning. he says I'M losing this war. Its really nice subtle way of showing how much pressure he feels as just a 12 year old Avatar.
