Wfftipwff, guys! Here is the latest Chapter for Order of the Phoenix... And I am not sure I have ever been so 'vocal' while listening to a chapter for the first time. XD I make note of what I said outloud while doing my notes... this may need to be a feature going forward. ;)

We also discuss breakfast, horse menure, posh charity shops, the original Street Fighter movie, runny poos (in dogs) , how Hermione deserves to go to prison and why I ended up calling Harry what a donkey owned by the Head Master of Hogwarts would be named...

Just as a heads up, I do tend to be slightly more frustrated with Harry than Cho here, but we have a really good discussion in the Book Club! Don't worry, this a return of "Veggie giving Harry a hard time about everything" again, just how I saw the scene in the moment! :)

It feels good to actually be able to get you think before the end of the month! So sorry about the recent delays on these. Your patience has been super kind!!Love you, guys!

Cari Ann

So I am not sure if it is considered madam podifoot's tea shop. But there is certainly a tea shop in hogwarts legacy, its in the center square area, across from honey dukes.

itsanursething

Yay!! So excited to listen to this while I unpack in my new apartment!!

Alex Hopps

Holy Hippopotamus , is that the date already, damn. Good chapter aswell. I never even finished last months video ive been so busy with my new job

Dani Phantom

perfect time to fill the rest of my night! thanks veggie! and don’t worry, i haven’t gotten to it in the video yet but i think it’s a pretty unanimous consensus that harry is a bit of a tosser in this chapter 😂

Sunblooded

Is next month gonna be a single chapter or back to doubles? (Either ways totally fine do what you want/ need, as always), just wondering how many chapters to read and make notes on for the book club

Jake M

Just in time to keep me company during surgery tomorrow/today! Thanks Woozle, and I guess the other one too :P XD

Jake M

Madame Puddifoot most likely wasn't alive, right? Unless it's a family business 🤔

Madikuma95

I admit I am a Harry-defender. 😂 It might be Jim Dale's acting, with Cho blubbering and Harry absolutely bewildered, or maybe because I've read this book so many times, but I do find their date a bit on the comical side. 😅

Cari Ann

Yea I can't even remember what the name was of it but i am sure there is a label for it and believe there is even a revelio page there. It could be like olivanders and just run in the family, but I am not sure

Cari Ann

Yea I wasnt a fan of most female characters read by Jim, but the full cast audiobook didn't make me like cho any better. I adore Luna in it though, such a nice change after hating everytime she spoke with Jim reading lol

John Phillips

As I said, I don't think the chapter is badly written, in fact I think it's good, but sometimes you get a section where it's not easy to read and in this case it's the awkwardness. The rest of the chapter outside of the disastrous date, is pretty entertaining now that I think about it (like the last stretch with Hermione, Luna, and Rita Skeeter), but the date takes up a good portion of it.

Madikuma95

I actually like Dale's female voices! Like it's hard to describe, but they *sound* female to me even though it's obviously a man speaking? The only one I don't like is Luna's, lol.

Ziro the Hutt

Tbh I don't really see much difference between the description of Rita being unemployed - and how it applies to her mental state - with what is said about Sirious or Lupin being unkempt in Prisoner of Azkaban. Sure, one or two descriptions of Slytherins can be a bit over the top, but the lines themselves aren't that harmful, so I don't read too much into them tbh. I'm sure its been mentioned before, I know I have forwarded it to you Veggie, but check out the new Harry Potter audiobooks if you have some spare time; apparently they are great. They have many members of the new cast coming for the tv show, and background music and sound effects like a radio drama. I actually need to apologise to you about that video you put up, as I fell into the trap of getting stuck into some of the bigots and other things that people are saying about the show, when I know you said in your intro to it, to keep it light. I really hope it doesn't put you off reacting to it when it airs; perhaps if you are thinking of not doing it, then maybe do it as a Patreon exclusive so you don't get all that nonsense in your vids? I for one can't wait for it tbh. Lol what was it with the art teachers at your school!?! Madness! You'd think that would be an easy subject to teach and the teachers be a bit more stable (less stressed), if a bit creative; over some of the more standard curriculum based subjects, like maths and English. Sounds like it was similar to the teaching of Defence against the Dark Arts here at Hogwarts! I'm actually with Harry to a large extent with the Cho date. Sure he misses some signals and yep should have been more proactive and engaging with her, but he's never had a girlfriend before and is nervous; and the last thing he wants to hear is about Cedric. Sure Cho is going through it, but she should also realise that bringing something like that up on Valentine's Day, is poor form; and can be saved for when they know each other better. I think both fumble their lines badly here, and its portrayed as Harry being a thick teenager, when its not. Haha that's hilarious about the last episode of On The Buses being about a garden competition; mind you they did do jokes about Stan fixing the loo and it going "to pot". It was the Mrs. Brown's Boys of its day it seems. Bless This House and George And Mildred were more my thing. Reg Varney and the woman who played his mother, both reached their 90's tbf to them! No I don't think Rita should get paid for writing an honest version of Harry's events with Voldy, she can consider it her penance for all the awful stuff she's wrote in the past, and it will clear the slate with her and "Little Miss Perfect".

Ziro the Hutt

Hogwarts Legacy wasn't perfect, but what it did well, it did superbly well.

Garfnob

odd everyone is on about the blackmail in this chapter, but not last book when she blackmailed Rita in to not writing anything for a year. the reason Rita is currently unemployed. this was a way to lift her prior blackmail, at least in part. P.S. i am in the USA and my mom uses "F**k a Duck" all the time. no idea where she got it from, and until now i know no one else that used it.

Jake M

Thanks!

VeggieGamer

Good luck Jake! Hope all goes well! 😊

I have zero sympathy for Rita, and I think saying Hermione is "breaking the law" is an exaggeration. I mean, yes, technically she did, but Rita wrote a racist article about Hagrid that nearly ruined his life and career, and then Hermione caught her sneaking into the hospital wing to spy on children. :-) Rita also stalked Hermione and Harry all year and used her power as a reporter to spread slander about them. In my country, the most Hermione would get is a slap on the wrist for "unlawful self-help," and even that, considering she's a minor, is unlikely.

Garry (Not Jerry)

If you recall when Sirius first escaped in prisoner of Azkaban he was on the muggle news, so Fudge must have informed the muggle prime minister.

Hawwah

Imagine if Severus set Harry down and told him "you will do unpaid work for me, Potter, or I'm reporting Black to authorities. His Azkaban cell is waiting for him". I guarantee you no one in the book club would comment "ha ha ha, Severus is ruthless, I love him!" (That's right, no one at all, because I wouldn't defend it either.) People would CRUCIFY him. He would be called every name in the book. People would call him a horrible person and his actions unforgivable. When Hermione does it, 90% of people go on about how amazing Hemione is and the remaining 10%, while admitting Hemione committed a crime, still consider her a good person (I don't). It's the double standard that grinds my gears so much. I don't care if people don't like Sev but I wish people would be fair to him and hold him to the same standards as everybody else.

Badger Kat

Regarding the name Cho Chang, there are lots of interesting discussions online about this, I looked it up after reading sunblooded’s comment. There is a theory I found in a couple different places (I pasted someone else’s comment below from a Reddit thread) and it seemed very interesting to me. I would consider it very plausible, considering how J. K. Rowling likes to play with words and names. “Cho Chang could be a variation of "chou chang" which means melancholy, or depression. It would make sense, seeing that Cho's character lost Cedric, causing her significant pain.”

Hawwah

When did the trio actually face any consequences for their crimes? Yes, crimes. I'm not even going to bring up their constant rule breaking because that's inconsequential in comparison to them commiting actual felonies. Hermione set a man on fire, which is an assault. No consequences. Harry intentionally injured his classmates during potions class. Assault. No consequences. Hermione broke into her teacher's office and stole his property. That's a burglary. No consequences. The trio attacked a man and knocked him unconscious. Then they let him lying on the floor, unconscious and bleeding from his head, for about an hour, without as much as checking on him. That's an aggravated assault. No consequences. Hermione abducted a woman and falsely imprisoned her. No consequences. Hermione blackmailed a woman. No consequences. The trio can do whatever they want, hurt whomever they want, and never face any comeuppance. They're untouchable.

Hawwah

I never heard of it but I googled it right now and you're correct. One learns something new every day.

S1lm4r1l

Sirius was on the Muggle News as an "escaped prisoner", so there's clearly some correspondence between Magical and Non-Magical law enforcement. The idea of Snape using Harry's memories to watch Muggle TV has me giggling hysterically and I will absolutely believe that this occurred during one of their sessions.

Andrew K

I think it’s always different with protagonists though. The trio are presented as the protagonists, the ones we’re supposed to be rooting for, so naturally the reader is going to support them, give them more leniency, and celebrate when they do both good & bad. I understand your opinions on this are very strong, but for the most part the trio are doing things that they think are for the best or to solve a mystery or save the day, and 99% of readers are on their side for a reason. I think most people here appreciate your opinions and respect them, but I think sometimes the passion behind your views can come across as you thinking your opinion to be fact on everything regarding Snape, and attacks on everyone else for thinking differently. Of course if this isn’t the case then it’s fine, but I just wanted to let you know how it comes across and why your comments sometimes get taken negatively in the book club. Keep being passionate though and enjoying things you love! Hope this comes across okay!

Grace

Some people say that the name Cho Chang is a play on "chou chang" which in chinese means "melancholy". That certainly seems to fit her character (at least in OOTP) however I wouldn't give JK too much credit considering she also has created names like "Kingsley SHACKLEBOLT".

Garry (Not Jerry)

Interestingly - no, Mcgonagall should not go to Azkaban for being an animagus because she is registered but, ironically, Sirius should!

Hawwah

I do because I don't think you have to like the protagonist to enjoy a book or a movie. My favorite movie is Amadeus. I think the main character is a horrible person but I still find his story intriguing. Plus there are many other aspects of the film I like, such as the acting, the music, the costumes or the fact it was shot mostly in my home city and I'm familiar with many of the locations.

Madikuma95

I've always thought Shacklebolt was an awesome-sounding last name, it's only recently that I've heard anyone dislike it! 0_0

Continuing what I said about chapters 28 and 29 being single-chapter book clubs, you might also want to make chapter 30 a single-chapter discussion because it's 54 minutes. After that, you could do chapters 31 and 32 together because chapter 32 is shorter (41 mins). The same goes for chapters 33–36. The chapter lengths for those are as follows: Ch 33 - 27:11 Ch 34 - 36:28 Ch 35 - 54:48 Ch 36 - 28:38 As you can see, the chapters get a lot shorter here. Sure, chapter 35 is 54 minutes, but it would be grouped with a shorter one (chapter 36), so I think that works great. After that, chapter 37 should definitely be on its own because it's both long and very important! Then the final chapter (chapter 38) would also be on its own. So, here's my full schedule suggestion for the rest of the book: -Chapter 26 (55 mins) & Chapter 27 (51 mins) -Chapter 28 (54 mins) -Chapter 29 (49 mins) -Chapter 30 (54 mins) -Chapter 31 (53 mins) & Chapter 32 (41 mins) -Chapter 33 (27 mins) & Chapter 34 (36 mins) -Chapter 35 (54 mins) & Chapter 36 (28 mins) -Chapter 37 (56 mins) -Chapter 38 (50 mins) Having chapters 26 and 27 in one book club is the biggest hurdle here because they're both over 50 minutes. It's mainly just to avoid having so many single-chapter discussions in a row. But if you can't do that, that's fair. Still, if you could manage it, I think the rest would make a lot of sense. This is just my suggestion 😁

Hawwah

JKR is British, not American. She probably doesn't associate black people with slavery.

Hawwah

That's correct, but honestly, that's the least of his crimes.

VeggieGamer

One of my all time movies ever is Withnail & I. I have mentioned it several times through out this series. The protagonists are racist, snobs, alcoholics, junkies, sexists, criminals and homophobic, but I understand the story we are being shown is from their broken perspective and I end up caring and feeling for them whenever I watch it. But you do tend to get genuinely angry about the protagonists in this. Maybe understanding that the author wrote them as terrible people but can still be taken away as positive from their journey would help you enjoy the Harry Potter series even more. Maybe Harry, Hermione and Ron are objectively absolutely horrific, hideous and terrible hate filled criminals, but that is the point the author wrote it from, so just pointing out the evil things they do is kinda redundent, as - that is the point. Much like Withnail and I.

Noni

Be careful with that joke book. There’s still a lot of book exclusive material to come and you might accidentally spoil yourself, albeit in a very vague and confusing way. I am actually really enjoying the single chapter format for these longer chapters. Speaking as someone who has watched the last 4 videos in the space of a month, they just feel more relaxed. There’s no need to rush, when we get finished we’ll be sad it’s over, let’s take the time to make sure we enjoy it.

Hawwah

I don't know that movie so I can't comment on it unfortunately. I haven't watched many British movies or shows to be honest. The only British sitcom I'm familiar with is The Red Dwarf (but I watched it many, many times). A British film I really liked is About a boy. Interestingly enough, the main character in this film is not a great person either, at least not until towards the end. But that doesn't prevent me from enjoying the movie. My point is I really don't think you *have to* like the protagonist to appreciate a piece of art, whether it's a book, a film, an opera or anything else. To me, those are two completely unrelated things. Actually, yesterday, after I posted my comment about Amadeus, I went to YouTube and watched a bit of Don Giovanni. As I was watching it, it occurred to me this is yet another example. The titular character, Don Giovanni, is an utter scumbag. The opera is a masterpiece. Would I enjoy it more if I pretended Don Giovanni was a good person? I honestly don't think so.

John Phillips

@Madikuma95 Ngl, a lot of people are really grasping at straws with some of these "criticisms". I don't support JKR's views or actions but I'm a bit sick of seeing this constant revisionist history of the books. Just because JKR is transphobic, doesn't mean she was secretly racist the whole time nor did she intentionally came up with "problematic" names.

Emiel Callaars

my god, after the morality bit. How the f can you stay so perfectly still as a statue. I would move so quickly.

Jake M

In the UK at least, there's an onus on schools to discipline children rather than involve the authorities for crimes like assault and verbal abuse (eg hate crime). So the books echo British society- they get their comeuppance (to use your word) through detentions, negative house points and loss of other liberties, with the expectation they will mature out of such behaviour by adulthood. E.G. towards the end of movie 6 Harry's assault would absolutely land him in prison as an adult; but as Dumbledore says during Harry's trial, what happens at Hogwarts stays at Hogwarts. P.S. I'm absolutely not defending Harry, I personally think he's a tosspot from around book 4 onwards 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hawwah

OK, but the trio typically don't get any comeuppance at all.

S1lm4r1l

Snape being held to the same standards as everyone else is something I'd like to see.

VeggieGamer

Weirdly, I think I actually learned it at school! XD In drama, you basically focus on tensing and releasing other muscles that aren't the focus. XD Boring but actually strangely affective!

Alex Hopps

As a freelancer who just went through a 6 month period of unemployment due to medical reasons, its amazing how quickly your life can crumble and its harder to nesseseraily present yourself in the best way. I actually find scruffy Rita quite relatable. On a positive note im a month into a new job, no longer homeless and open heart surgery or imminent death is further away than it has been for a long time

VeggieGamer

So glad to hear things are getting better for you, Alex!

PumpkinSparks

I believe Hagrid went to Azkaban for a bit in book 2 when people thought he released a monster in the school - and that was pre-trial and just as a precaution. So we can assume that there certainly are different "levels" of security there. Maybe the high-security ones are deeper inside the castle and/or have a higher Dementor presence? I agree, the description of unemployed Rita was unnecessary! She obviously is someone who takes great pride in her appearance. So maybe she does not have the funds anymore to get her hair set and get her nails done every couple of days. But to me personally it makes zero sense that she would walk around with chipped nail polish. She would self manicure and either have a simple polish or none. Her hair would be in a simple do, that would not be as refined and labour intensive as before, but certainly polished. Especially the moment she does a meetup with Hermione, she would make sure to look her possible best! Also, Rita should be way more business savvy! If I were her in that situation, I would make a contract with Hermione: I do this article for you (which you are obviously really eager to get done), and I can do certain types of articles again without repercussion from your side. Or at least try! It's weird to me that Rita doesn't even mention the possibility of some type of quid pro quo...

PumpkinSparks

I actually still think that Snape is not the best to teach Harry Occlumancy. Not because I truly believe he purposefully opens Harrys mind more for Voldy to get in or something, but because he generally isn't a good teacher and has huge animosity towards Harry. Being the best person in a subject does not make you the best to teach that subject. Usually the best teachers are people who have a good grasp on the subject and (way more importantly) have a clear and understandable way to give that knowledge to their students. As you pointed out: Hagrid is not a good teacher! He obviously has a vast knowledge about the care of magical creatures, is very good and passionate about it, is seen in high regards by everyone who studys the same field - but is an awful teacher! Same is true for Snape (for different reasons than Hagrid, but still) On the other side we had Lupin, who might not have been the non plus ultra in DA, but he had a solid understanding of it and arguably was one of the best teachers Hogwarts had in quite some time! So yes, Snape is probably one of the most talented occlumency users out there. But no, he should not teach Harry, imo

S1lm4r1l

I would assume and the films seem to confirm this, that the highest-security prisoners are kept at the top, where the concentration of Dementors is highest, because Dementors can fly. Sirius was a high security prisoner and makes mention of looking down on the Dementors burying the body of Barty Crouch Jnr on the island.

Mary

The eating coming through the AirPods was like nails on a chalkboard veggie! Don’t think it would have picked up the same if I was listening normally lol Also True Lies is a great watch!

MP

Also, in PoA, Fudge was quoted at one point defending his decision to contact the Muggles about Black, as he was "dangerous" to them too. I'm not sure if it mentioned him talking to the Muggle PM or not, but it would make sense.

MP

Hermione set a man's robes on fire to distract him from what she thought (understandably) was an attempt to injure or kill Harry. As soon as she knew he was distracted, she pulled the fire back off. No intent to harm, just distract. Harry did not intentionally injure his classmates. He blew up a cauldron in order to cause a diversion so Hermione could get needed ingredients for their potion. The injuries caused were easily remedied.

MP

Also the fact that Rita was banned from school property, ignored the ban and snuck on anyway. I don't have a lot of sympathy for her either, though I do think maybe Hermione enjoyed tormenting her a bit too much. Though as Hermione herself was a victim of Rita's slander, her attitude towards her is understandable. In a way, Hermione was being lenient towards Rita, giving her a chance to redeem herself by writing something useful. She would have been fully justified in simply turning Rita in.

MP

I did notice the way Cho talks in the full cast books, she ends every sentence on a questioning note. Kind of the way she talked in the movies too.

S1lm4r1l

Hermione could have distracted Snape by means that weren't setting his robes on fire. Harry didn't know that the injuries he caused would be easily remedied. The Trio rarely face any consequences of actions towards Snape, but to say they do not face any consequence for any wrongdoing at all is blatantly untrue.

SDSavvy

It never really works to apply a specific set of real-world ethics expectations to a fictional world.

Alexis Burrows

Let's face it, the reason so many people find the date bit so hard to read is because the glamorous woman in the restaurant, the suave man-about-town and the long and happily married couple all remember their OWN first awkward dates as school-children - something they do NOT particularly want to remember OR let anyone know about today. It ruins not only their own, older self-images but is NOT the image they want to portray to other people.

Alexis Burrows

Hawwah, thank GOODNESS someone else recognises that. I get it that kids only look at the surface level of people, but honestly, both Potter and Black were toxic. 'Peaked in High School' toxic. Black especially was a nasty piece of work. IRL, ALL the Marauders would have been convicted of crimes, but Black would have been in Crown Court for Attempted Murder. Pettigrew you can discount as a person because he was just a toad-eating POS who sucked up to ANYONE more powerful than himself and the fact that Potter and Black allowed him to hang around with them shows a distinct lack of character on their parts and proves their lack of emotional intelligence. Lupin was the best of them, but I think he was afraid of his friends a little, in case they let the cat out of the bag about his ''furry little problem'.
