They all know/think there is a bigger bad behind the beast at this point. Angelus told them while he was in the prison cell with them all present, it was a theory on his part but a correct one and they've decided it's probably true and are acting with that in mind. Wesley says in this episode before he goes to break out Faith that without Angel , they have the beast to deal with, his master who they don't even know, etc.

Thanks! I just couldn't remember where that as astablished and who was there!!

Another great reaction as usual, Veggie! This season continues to be wild, entertaining, surprising, moving, hilarious, and deranged. I think the reason they didn't give Faith a final quip there with Angelus is to show us that she is actually really shaken by the situation. Not only did the Beast just sweep the floor with her, but this is also her first encounter with the real Angelus. She didn't know how sadistic he can be -- even hearing the tales probably doesn't prepare you for the first time you meet a demon wearing your friend's face. Connor definitely has a little crush on her, but Cordelia knew just how to get him back under her own thumb. Loved Wesley this episode! He is definitely no longer the bumbling "rogue demon hunter" we got in early seasons, but he has come to be the most hardcore believer in Angel's mission out of the whole group. Whether he wants to acknowledge it or not, he believes in rescue and redemption, and he still wants to make the world a safer place. He's no longer afraid to take the actual "rogue" actions sometimes needed to accomplish that.

Love seeing Faith back! We last saw her at the very end of Angel 2x1 when Angel visits her in prison ❤️ Agreed with Alicia that the lack of any kind of quip is to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation and how badly she was beaten. It must be pretty humbling to go from being top dog to being tossed around like a ragdoll. She would have been dead if Angelus hadn't used to opportunity to steal the dagger and kill The Beast. Worth noting that there's a subtle Buffy crossover happening beyond the phone call to Dawn: when Faith is attacked in prison, it's with a blade that's very similar if not identical to the blades used by the Bringers to kill Potentials over on Buffy, so it seems like Faith is on the hitlist of The First Evil. That scene with Wesley and Lilah is weirdly heartbreaking in its own way: Lilah may have been evil and self-serving, but Wesley obviously cared for her, and their "conversation" reveals a lot about his inner thoughts and feelings. Thanks Veggie!

I admit, I kind of love Wesley and Lilah's relationship.... it's toxic as anything, of course, but there's something I find really touching about what started as ill-advised hooking up motivated by manipulation and self-loathing, turning into both of them really genuinely caring about each other. Wesley's scenes with her in this episode are so sad, and beautifully acted by the two of them. I love that Angelus is consistently just the worst ally you could team up with. He literally killed the Beast to see if he could, and it's totally in character for him to just do that, I remember the first time I saw this episode, my reaction to that final scene was basically "FINALLY." Charisma Carpenter has been so visibly pregnant for SO MUCH of this season, and it took forever for it to become part of the plot. As icky as the Connor situation is, at least they don't have to keep awkwardly framing her camera shots to pretend she's not pregnant, lol. The first time I watched this season, back in the episode "Spin the Bottle" was when I noticed that Charisma looks like she might be pregnant. The moment she walked into the hotel, I was pretty sure. Then later when she, under the amnesia spell, looked down at her chest and said "Looks like I'm gonna fill out even more!" I cracked up SO hard, because they're basically acknowledging the real-life pregnancy making her figure fuller than usual.

Interestingly, you made the exact same face for Cordy & the Beast (24:07) as you did Wesley & Lilah and Cordy & Connor... which do you think is worse? XD

I think this is the first time the show has used "deficient" instead of the R word. Better late than never, I suppose? Edit: And then Angelus says it later after all...never mind.

James McCarthy

Unfortunately Angel was doing very well in ratings and quality for Season 5 (and season 4 in my opinion) but (and there is some gaps in the story) josh tried to get the show to be renewed earlier than normally scheduled and the executive in charge did not like his attitude and decided to cancel the show. 5 still has a good ending but we were robbed a season 6 at least.

James McCarthy

Faith is not very quippy, she is very serious. Her trauma did not manifest in humour but being disconnected from everything. Buffy, Spike, Angel, Angelous and Xander though they got the quips for days (:

James McCarthy

The Beast is down but another life is to be born. Now the real game begins (:

James McCarthy

I am sure it is partially done for drammatic effect but it is interesting that Angelous could not sense Cordelia in the room with the Beast when she was a few metres away. No sound, no scent and if anything Angelous would have been better at those hunting sense and Angel was excellent at picking up on those. Yet she did not register at all, curious

Wow, I never would have noticed her pregnancy. 😮 Either I'm not good at recognizing that or you have a very keen eye.... or probably both!😅

I haven't seen the show before, so this is just my theory: I don't think that Cordy's baby is from Connor. I think it is either something she made up (e.g. with magic) to get Conor on her side now the best is gone or *shudders* Cordy and the Beast have been up to more than a bit of smooching lately...😕
