... WHAT a villain. I mean, top tier Disney Villain?? Absolutely hated him, in all the right ways!It blows my mind I didn't know a single song from this, they were all excellent! As were all the characters and those wonderful, wonderful backgrounds.

So glad we finally did this one. It came SO close last poll! XDLove you, guys! Have a great week!

Love this movie. Got the notification and clicked immediately. Can't wait to see your reaction

Katie

Oh yay! I voted for this movie! Going to watch it now 😁

Katie

I can't decide what my favourite Disney animated movie is. Possibly Hercules, but this movie is up there, as are The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood. Oh and A Goofy Movie.

VeggieGamer

Nice! Haven't seen Hercules or Goofy Movie! Apparently I did see Little Mermaid when I was young but don't remember it fully. Robin Hood, even now, I occasionally pop on to rewatch! XD

Paige

If you're a fan of found footage, As Above So Below is one of my favorites in the genre!!

Katie

Ooh you should watch Hercules and A Goofy Movie. I love the music in both!

Emiel Callaars

this is a great movie. Some banger songs. The opening song has a very great cover imo. If you want to listen/see the video it is: Bells of Notre Dame (Disney's Hunchback) METAL cover - Jonathan Young & Caleb Hyles

VeggieGamer

Yeah I'll add um to the list! Also, I can confirm I have not seen Sword in the Stone. :)

VeggieGamer

Oh nice! I just looked it up, I almost feel like I have or was planning on seeing it and forgot! And hey, it is set in the Court of Miracles! XD

emmainkeri

Djali is the best goat!! 🐐 My favorite Disney animated movies are Mulan (!!!), Beauty and the Beast and Tarzan. Moana too. Cinderella, Bambi and Dumbo all hold very very special places in my heart as well 🫶🏻 Hope you get to watch Sleeping Beauty soon, the animation is gorgeous!

emmainkeri

The non-gargoyles are called Victor, Hugo and Laverne, after the author Victor Hugo and singer Laverne Andrews. I haven't finished the reaction yet but I doubt you knew this! 🙏🏼

Timothy the T-Rex

I'd like to see you react to The Little Mermaid as well, seeing how you don't fully remember the movie. It was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up and it would be a treat to see you react to it.

PumpkinSparks

Not done with the movie yet, but I had to get those thoughts out before continuing: The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World's Fair, so way later than this movie takes place ;) Notre Dame truly is an impressive build and this movie really did it justice in its details and impressiveness and oppressive feel. But honestly I prefer Sacre Coeur by a long shot! That church has that serene beauty that is indiscribable, and the area it's in (Montmartre) is breathtaking and in my opinion the only bit of Paris actually worth the hype (if you're into art and/or history add the Louvre to that). I know it's an unpopular opinion, but France has so many gorgeous areas and cities, whereas Paris is just grey and absolutely doesn't deserve the hype...

Emery Sea

This might be one of my favorite Disney movie scores. I do wish that the gargoyles were meant to be only in Quasimodo's imagination or not included at all. They were very much added as characters that could be turned into toys. If you're interested in the story behind the adaptation of Hunchback (along with some pretty neat French architecture history), Lindsey Ellis has a cool video essay talking about this movie.

VeggieGamer

This is interesting, as I have only visited Paris twice and both when I was a kid. I do remember it being beautiful, but I have since been to Annecy and the nearby town of Albertville, and that is possibly the most incredible place I have visited (I will ALWAYS love Cornwall though). I haven't even heard of that church you mentioned, but it looks incredible!!

VeggieGamer

I work a couple of them out, but only after most of the movie! XD

VeggieGamer

Yeah, i do feel if the gargoyles weren't in it, it wouldn't lose much. But I did enjoy their humour. :)

VeggieGamer

Nice! I LOVED Mulan! 'Be a Man' is up there with Pink Elephants for me (which will likely never be beaten). I haven't seen Tarzan or Moana though! :)

emmainkeri

Mulan just hits different! Oh I hope you'll watch both Tarzan and Moana on the channel at some point. Great stories and amazing soundtracks, animation and everything! Btw I don't think there are many people that love Pink Elephants. I've loved it since I was a kid, but I know it's traumatizing for a lot of people 😅

Rey's Got Plans

Oh yeah! Frollo was the Asylum De Loon guy 😂

Grace S

I'm so happy this came up as top of the poll, soooo good! The music in this is possibly my favorite in any animated movie, although the Prince of Egypt does give it a run for its money. I'm also looking forward to Anastasia, I was in my high school's production of the musical my junior year, which could easily be a whole other reaction, Disney really has a reputation for changing stories around quite a bit. The music in that is also incredible. Amazing reaction as always Veggie!!

Rebecca May

The movie is SO different to the book... I was given an abridged version to read as a kid, and honestly, completely scarred. It's SO dark. I see someone has already recommended one cover song but if you enjoy orchestral covers, L'Orchestra Cinematique have done absolutely gorgeous versions of both "Bells of Notre Dame" and "Hellfire".

Rey's Got Plans

VEGGIE! Make sure when you edit it for YT you mention that: The film uses "gypsy" as a derogatory label and relies on historical Romani stereotypes. And that you use the term gypsy during the reaction befre bein educated! Many people may find it offensive or distateful if you don't mention it I think. This is one of my favourite disney movies and it was a great reaction thank youuu!!

Katie

When you were talking about the sewers of Paris it reminded me of a scene in my favourite video game Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars. Have you ever played it?

Steven

You're right! Victor and Hugo are a direct reference to Victor Hugo who wrote the original novel of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Glad you were finally able to check this out because it had by far some of the best songs in any Disney movie!

Cari Ann

Great reaction! My favorite Disney movie growing up was beauty and the beast, and my second favorite is lion king. Both of which it seems you have seen, but my favorite sequel to a disney is the lion king 2 simbas pride, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.

VeggieGamer

I haven’t. But feel like I have heard of the game!

Erik Sänd

Beauty and the beast, sleeping beauty. Robin Hood and pinnochio are my faves out of the classics.

Sab

So happy this finally won a poll! I love the songs, the dark themes, and its got some of my favourite visuals out of any Disney movie. The way they use light is absolutely masterful. All of the glowing flames and the way you can see the dust in the sunlight in some scenes, it is a testament to the beauty of classic 2D Disney animation. Hellfire is my favourite villain song, the drama in the music and the vocals. I love when Frollo is trying to run away and deflect blame and all the robes are singing "tua culpa" which is latin for your fault. Its got to be one of the darkest Disney movies and its still wild how family friendly they made it compared to the original book. And yes you are right Frollo was member of the church and Quasimodo was deaf in the book.

Cody1075

This one is so good! Hellfire is an INCREDIBLE song! 👀

VeggieGamer

Hey Rey! I think I may have come across in the wrong way yesterday, sorry! So I'll reword it - you are absolutely right about that term and IRL I use Romanis or "travelling families". I only use it here as it is the term being used by everyone in the movie to avoid confusion. I do say at one point 'I use the word Romanis', but only briefly. When it comes to the edit, I may put up an explanation of why I am using it, rather than edit around them, as that may be a bit fiddly and messy. I hope this is ok!

Annabellae Priestly

Every time you post a reaction, it makes my day ... but when its a Disney reaction? Hell yeah!

PumpkinSparks

Annecy looks gorgeous!!! I just looked it up and it looks nearly unreal. That definately goes on my very long list of places I want to visit! A couple of years ago I was very fortunate that I "had" to go to the Bretagne twice for work(Brest and a small coastal town close to Vannes) and I took a couple vacation days each time and stayed a bit longer. For someone who loves hiking and history (especially a sucker for anything celtic) that area is a dream come true. And last year I was in Strasbourg and absolutely fell in love with it - it's such a unique place that just oozes out its complex history and was nearly overwhelming aesthically (that scentence makes sense to me) Yeah, I don't know. I've been to Paris 3 times now and enjoyed my stay everytime, and it does have pretty areas just as most cities do (Montmartre being my fave), but the city itself underwhelmed me every time. She's just so grey... I don't get the love she gets...

PumpkinSparks

Finally watched the last hour - I made the reasonable decision yesterday to stop watching and go to bed before midnight ;) It's a bit weird: this movie is gorgeous and you can clearly see all the love they poored into it, and the soundtrack is epic, and the songs are great (don't care about the gargoyle song, but I feel they were unnessecary anyways), and Hellfire is such an amazing villain song, and Frollo is one of the best Disney villains rivaling Gaston (they're scary cause they're real!) - but for some reason I don't have any feelings for this movie, neither good or bad. I've seen it once, thought "yeah, that's a movie...", and never had the need to rewatch it. The only bit I've seen tons is Hellfire, other than that just rewatches through reactions or essay videos... And while I use the term gargoyles to discuss the most unnecessary characters of this movie because the movie uses that term: Yes, they are not gargoyles! Thank you for being so adamant about that. I know it's not important, but for some reason it really bothers me that people don't understand what gargoyles are... Quick fyi: Anastasia ain't Disney, it's 20th Century Fox (which now technically is Disney because they bought everything) As for favourite Disneys: Silver Era - Mary Poppins, Bronze Era - Robin Hood, Renaissance Era - Beauty and the Beast and Mulan, Experimental Era - Treasure Planet, Revival Era - Princess and the Frog and Encanto

Embran

You are right though. Technicaly they aren´t gargoyles, but grotesques. And that makes them ironically but sadly even more fitting as his¨imaginary¨friends. Because a hunchback or the deformed from birth in general is for centuries considered as a grotesk..

Embran

Ironically Frollo would not have gotten away with attacking the Notre Dame or maybe even setting Paris ablaze. At best incarcerated or removed from office, but more likely executed. Because using cleansing the city as pretext doesn´t do anything. An attack on Notre Dame, a sacred building is apart from attempted regicide likely the worst you can do towards the King/ Dauphin.

fluffqueen91

My favorite Disney films when I was a kid were "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast," but this one has always had a special place of honor too! When I was pretty young, I'd sit at the kitchen table and listen to the read-along version of the story on my cassette player. I had several of those for Disney, but for some reason my little brain latched onto HoND! The art and animation in this film hit in a way most modern films don't (partially due to the death of 2D animation). The soundtrack is absolutely amazing too! Few villain songs can touch "Hellfire". I miss when Disney wasn't afraid to tackle darker themes in animation and didn't shy away from more complex vocabulary! There are a couple of modern Disney films I really like, but nothing comes close to the classics.

Caroline

Thank you for this reaction, Veggie! Honestly, the music in this movie is so good! That's why I asked myself: Have you seen "The Prince of Egypt yet, or consider to watch it...? I wonder, why no-one had suggested it so far. It has one of the most beautiful Scores out there and im sure you would enjoy it. It's one of Dreamworks early Masterpieces from 1989.

Tawny Owl

This is one of my favourite Disney movies, but I think I only watched it when I was in my late teens. As a kid I was only into movies with animal main characters, like Lion King, Robin Hood and 101 Dalmatians. The Hunchback movie is very different from the book. Quasimodo is indeed deaf, from being exposed to the bells in close proximity his entire life. While this is already one of Disney’s darker movies, the story in the book is even more messed up. No happy-end, Frollo is acting even more deranged, Phoebus is a real scumbag and almost everyone dies in the end, except for the goat, who surprisingly isn’t just an animal companion added by Disney! One thing I always find kind of funny is that the lie Frollo tells Quasimodo in the movie, about his mother abandoning him as a baby, is actually kind of true in the book. Baby Quasimodo is just left in front of the church, with passersby showing nothing but disgust and even discussing killing him. Frollo, as a young priest, is the only one to feel compassion in that moment and takes the baby in to raise as his son. Doesn’t make his actions later on any less messed up of course.

Time

In the novel frolo is a priest but apparently the writers thought having a villain be of religious origin would be bad so made him a judge so you weren’t entirely wrong thinking he had religious ties, also the voice actor for Quasimodo Tom Hulce stars in one of my favorite movies Amadeus 1984 I doubt it would do well on the channel as it’s an older movie but you should check it out sometime. Great video as always.

VeggieGamer

Oh! I have seen Amadeus! Really good, it was a long time ago, but as I reemember it was excellent!

Mikayla Prushik

For everyone talking about the book, the stage production is closer to the book (not as dark, but way more than the movie) and it’s one of my favorites and no one ever reacts to it 😭

Byokko

2:29 it is very well indeed, he is one of the most popular disney villains i believe - personally i just start bawling as soon as the movie starts, because the opening song with the choir and the bells... just makes me cry, its so majestic T^T i also remember, i would go watch this in the cinema as a lil kid with a friend and her mom, and i would just have tears running down the whole time, because i would not blink ONCE in like 30 minutes XD it def. left an impression on me (and then Esmeralda became my fav disney princess until Kida, and i had an Esmeralda barbie! x3) 3:30 i believe im the only person alive, who prefers Lion King 2 over 1 x: 6:13 are you talking about Anastasia? that tells a Russian story, and is actually NOT a disney movie, but was "adopted" by disney some years back? x: 18:11 it's not specifically french xd It's Latin. 21:47 this is one of my absolute favorite disney quotes: "if watching is all you gonna do, then you'll watch your life go by without you" 28:24 fun fact, he is looking like a deformed version of peter pan, they have almost exactly the same clothing, same colors, same hair color XD 42:12 yes, there is a 2, tho not many know about it or have seen it x: 1:11:47 thats what makes him such a great villain character. because he 100% believes what he says. he is a man of faith, very strong faith... i remember as a kid not getting anything much other than "he is the bad guy who wants to capture my fav character", but as an adult the religious and cultural dialogues hit different anyways, this is the reason why Frolo is one of the most popular villains, dubbed "one of the greatest villain in animation" things like that. 1:51:30 well if you didnt know it as a kid, chances are that later you never heard them because they ARE considered extremely controversial nowadays x: (also religious stuff is not trendy) but yes, the "theme song" of this movie sang by a singer for the ending (like michael bolton in Hercules for example) is the Esmeralda song, the actual music video was actually very very popular on VIVA (a music video channel) back in the days 1:56:25 imho ESPECIALLY YOU, should be checking out "Oliver & Company" as well as "Fox & the Hound" but yea its hard to say which is my fav disney my most watched is def. Emperors New Grove, but other than that my few fav are def. some of the pre 2000 Lion King 1 and 2, Pocahontas 1 and 2, Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan 1 and 2, Fox and Hound, Oliver & Co, Atlantis and Treasure Planet (essentially the not-princess ones XD)

DocteurNS

It's an amazing movie, if a little totally inconsistent. But that's because the original novel by Victor Hugo was *dark.* It's quite crazy Disney ever decided to adapt this one. I haven't actually read it myself, but my brother has, and we've talked about it a fair bit. There's also a wonderful French musical that is much closer to the original novel. That one, I've watched at length. Like that scene where you mentioned the crowd was so fickle. I'm fairly sure that in the novel, Quasimodo was on the pillory for murder in the equivallent to that scene. Quasimodo is indeed deaf in the novel. And when a crowd tries to rescue Esmerelda from the church, he doesn't understand what they're there for, sees a mob, and fights them off. In the movie, that would be the scene where he angrily fights off Phoebus. His deafness leads to something of a... comedic(?) court scene when he's tried for murder and he can't hear a word of what the judge is saying. And the judge is also blind or deaf, I believe. At least, he's very old. Making for a quite nonsensical scene. Victor Hugo wasn't a great fan of the justice system, nor the church. Frollo is a priest in the novel, but I guess Disney didn't want trouble with religious-minded folk or risk Church censorship, so they made him a very devout judge instead and created the archdeacon character as the face of the Church. Frollo is a bit more complex in the novel, but still a terrible person, from my understanding. I believe he took in Quasimodo of his own accord and was a... decently good man (citation needed) but soured over the years until he basically went insane. There's some criticism there about priests not being able to marry, I think? In the movie, that sentence at the start of the song "Of my virtue I am justly proud" is such a masterful encapsulation of his character. He believes himself virtuous. He's self-righteous. And he cannot see the corruption within himself, as pride is supposed to be a sin. Love it. In the novel, Phoebus is an absolute terrible person too... Well, actually, most everyone in that novel is a terrible person. Pheobus is already married but runs after Esmerelda. Esmerelda gets married to a poet called Gregoire, who is also the novel's narrator, I believe? She marries him to save his life, yet at the end of the novel, that poet runs away with Esmerelda's goat, with implications that he was more into the goat than into Esmerelda herself. Clopin in the movie is kind of a mix of the poet and Esmerelda's father, who leads the Court of Miracles. Though I'm a little baffled the guys at Disney thought "Yeah, let's keep the zoophilia in it. We'll just give it to one of the (not-)gargoyls." So, yeah, Disney changed so much that it's basically not the same story. Ironically, I don't know that Victor Hugo would have minded? Not that I have any clue what he would have thought. But from what I know, he wrote "Notre-Dame" at a time when the cathedral was falling in to disrepair to get more people to care about the building. It wasn't even called "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" initially. That came either with the English translation or later reprints that wanted a catchier title. Anyway, my point is, as far as capturing the wondrous beauty of Notre-Dame as a building, the Disney movie did very well. The backstories of Esmerelda and Quasi are also even darker in the novel. In any case, I'm no expert, so I might have gotten some details wrong. I just know adapting this one had to have been a headache.

Stephen Hert

Both movies are a MUST. Moana is one of my favorites as is Tarzan.

Badger Kat

I can remember as an older teenager, seeing this in the theater and being disturbed that it was for children, it seemed a little mature in my opinion. My favorite animated movie is The Lion King hands-down. I’ve seen it so many times I think I have the whole thing memorized. It comes second only to the Princess Bride, which I also have memorized.

Quinn Grey

"Silence!" "JUSTICE!" and people wonder why millennials are the way we are.

Quinn Grey

Also I appreciate the panic over the heights. 'cause dude same.

Melissa Grant

I think the crowd was drunk at the festival, just following mob mentality for the most part, otherwise the film would've had to get them from scared of to cheering for to torturing Quasi in short order some other way within the short runtime.

Charlotte Carter PhD.

That was amazing! This is my first impression of you and I loooved it! Hope more animated movie reactions are coming 😈. As a millenials I'd like to recommend Homeward bound!

VeggieGamer

Thank you!! Ah I haven't seen Homeward Bound! But I am all up for doggo movies! :D

Charlotte Carter PhD.

Believe me, you'll love it. It definitely will make you emotional but I mean, that's what movies are for right 🤣. I would also recommend Treasure planet, tarzan, brother bear, anastasia, hercules and beauty and the beast 😍. As a French person, I thank you for watching the Hunchback of notre dame ❤️
