I absolutely love the set up and I have so many questions, but I look forward to the show answering them! :)

Love you, guys! I hope you enjoy this journey along side me!

Yay! I know you usually skip/ignore them, but I recommend watching the first recap at the start of episode 2 just to see the style they do them in, it's quite clever 😅 did you see there's a third series, Seven Havens, that's recently started? So far I think it's better than Korra but not as good as Airbender.

Emma

So excited for you to experience more ATLA story and meet Korra! Hope you enjoy it just as much. The updates were a fun time for me the first time around. I loved hearing about the Gaang growing up and how their lives progressed (insert a huge desperate plea for you to watch Avatar Aang, the new animated movie about the gaang as young adults!!) Thanks Veggie. You always make every day you post that much better for me.

pellaeon

man i cant wait for you to watch these it's a great show, personally i put s3 and probably 4 up there with s3 of atla. it's definitely made for a more mature audience as well

PumpkinSparks

The Korra recaps are phenomenal and probably the only recaps I never skip! For one I love the creativity of them, but also that they add in world jokes into them!!! So freaking good

Hannah Smoak

Everytime I watch Korra I feel like watching a ATLA fanfic but in the best way possible! It feels so nostalgic to me seeing all my favourite character’s kids and legacy.

pellaeon

also definitely take your time since HP is still going on but the atla comics do a great job with the transition to this era and are pretty fun, the LoK comics imo are better and continue the story after this show so you should check those out as well. There are also the 6 novels out which i heard are great, i just havent been able to get to them yet so i can't speak on them lol

PumpkinSparks

Just did the intro and had to get these thoughts out... if this video would have fallen anywhere around beginning of april it would have been hilarious to do a random Dora episode. Sadly wrong time of the year to pull that off... I love your Buffy hypothesis! That truly would have been an interesting concept. I don't think it works in this framework because it's not the legacy being past down to the next candidate, but an actual soul being reborn. But I like where your brain went there! I get Kyoshi as an overall favourite. She is just enigmatic! I stand by my intitial faves: Our angst-boy Zuko who I agree had the most tremendous character arc and overcame so much trauma to be the best version of himself but never lost his sass and he's just awsome Not necessarily from a character viewpoint but the most fun is our true ruler: the Melon Lord! Toph is just so cool and badass and fun. I have some issues with her as a person, but she is also the youngest by a bit and I'll give her some slack while she's still a kid... But one is hot, the other is fun, the truly best character (possibly not just in the Avatar-verse but in general) is the uncle we all want, the lover of tea, the person I imagine giving the best hugs: Iroh!!! I know I'm not there yet, but you don't understand how much I was looking forward to you meeting Naga! I generally considered "accidentally" spoiling you with the best girl just to make sure you watch Korra and meet that beautiful noodle. A polar bear dog? Who is basically all dog just with the size and strength of a polar bear? So she's ridable? Are you kidding me??? I get cuteness aggression everytime I see her and just want to hug her sooooo tightly and nuzzle up into that beautiful white coat!.....!....!

Joseph_Darke7

you are correct Naga is a polar bear dog. Tenzin's name comes from Tenzin Gyatso a name used by the Dalai lama. Tenzin is the youngest of his siblings. Aang and Katara's grandkids are Jinora (eldest) Ikki and Meelo the youngest at the moment as Pema is still pregnant. new bison is Oogi in other media they found a secret herd of bison.

Lord-LemonHead

I said in another comment that this is my first time watching too, and already this is a very fascinating start for an ATLA sequel series. It's very interesting to see how the new cast is compared to the previous show, especially those who are the Gaang's kids. Looking forward to the next episodes; I definitely intend to be here through the entire thing!

Finally! The thread of prophecy continues. (In all seriousness Veggie, if you have a lot going on, please don't ever feel stressed by us asking for content, we won't starve over here) The aesthetic of Republic City is supposed to represent New York during the prohibition era, so roughly 1920s. Which is also consistent with the technological advancement in our real world. The fire nation was already industrializing during ATLA, so that would put them at roughly 1850s tech level, fast forward 70 years (which is, if I remember correctly, how much time passed between ATLA and LOK) and you're smack dab in the golden 20s. Something you won't get told in the show, but is crucial info from interviews and statements the creators made, is why Aang died relatively young, especially in a world where Kyoshi could live to be over 200 years old. They explained that hibernating in the iceberg for 100 years strained Aangs spirit so much, it severely cut into his lifespan. That's why Aang died early, leading to Korra already being a young adult (think she's 17 or 18 here) while Katara is still kicking.

Glasto

I really hope you enjoy the show! It's a little different from ATLA and it has its ups and downs but it's a really great show.

GameAndWatch

Sorry, Uncle Iroh wins best character forever. We tend to refer to Korra's "Gaang" as the Krew. Naga is an anagram for Aang btw! Tenzin is voiced by J.K. Simmons, and Lin is voiced by Mindy Sterling. The air kids are Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo (oldest to youngest) Overall, glad you enjoyed yourself! I'd rather not poison the well by comparing Korra to AtLA, but I will say I enjoy this show more than the original. When it comes down to it, Last Airbender was a fairly grounded story about something very straightforward happening (defeat the firelord, save the world) but this show ends up being more complex than that. I'll have more to say as we get deeper about the production and behind-the-scenes stuff but for that reason and many others you'll come to see, I enjoy how the Avatar universe develops in this show more.

PumpkinSparks

I always hated that this show got a lot of flag from some "fans" that it is too technologically advanced and it doesn't make sense and bla bla bla... But if we compare it to our world, it totally can happen that fast. As you pointed out the fire nation was already into the start of the industrial revolution (to put it into our terms) and now they're sharing their knowledge within a time of peace, so obviously there would be quite a jump. And then people like to point at the ATLA earth kingdom and the isolated water tribes who definately had a more "mideval" feel to them, saying there is no way that it makes sense that we now have 1920s New York. I'd say: let's look at Japan, who within less than a century went from an isolationist feudal "less advanced" nation to one of the leaders in technology and innovation. That change totally happens that fast!!! Like my generation went from analog to the fear to be ruled by AI and I'm not even 40 yet

PumpkinSparks

There are so many things I want to say right now, but I can't because to fully explain my feelings I would have to spoil aspect of the next couple episodes, and I obviously don't want to do that... While I agree that Chief Beifong is right, I also cannot fault Korra. She was brought up in total isolation. It was made very clear that up until the press conference noone knew who the knew Avatar is, and the White Lotus taught her in bending and fighting and her duty, and her whole socialisation was the southern Water Tribe (while expanded from what we saw in ATLA, they still seem to be quite isolated) and the White Lotus. Once she entered Republic City she had no idea about the conflicts, she didn't understand the notion of traffic, didn't know people there struggled and were homeless... all she knew is that she's the Avatar and is supposed to right wrongs and help the people, that added to the fact that she obviously is more prone to act before thinking? That's a recipe for desaster! So yeah, I agree with Beifong here, but I do not fault Korra, I fault the White Lotus! You definitaly called Korra Karata once (that I noticed) ;)

2026-10-19 20:00 I'm so excited for your Korra reactions 😭 I love Amon. Blum does such a great performance. Avatar has always done an incredible job with voice actors. Can't wait to see your impression of the krew. a few days ago they announced season 3 and 4 of Seven Havens and as well another Avatar series about Avatar Kuruk. We're getting spoiled so much.

call_me_Greg

Just a fun fact, Tenzin's wife Pema is voiced by Maria Bamford who also voiced Cassity in Helluva Boss Season 3 episode 2.

TheFireMonkey

This takes place about 70 years after the end of the 100 year war. As you might already have guessed, it's sort of equivalent to the 1920s now. So Katara and gang would all be in their 80s - so it is reasonable for some to be alive and some to be dead.

jolt45

I think they were very blunt in the first 10 minutes because they wanted to establish the framework for the show. Yes, Katara is there and connected to the next Avatar but don't expect this show to be a love letter to the original series. It stays connected while being its own thing. Also, the tech kind of makes sense. Blimps were invented in our world in 1852. This is about 70 years after the original show so we should be around 1922 era tech which is pretty much on-the-nose from what we see here.

VeggieGamer

Oh I completely understand they wanted to establish their own show while referencing the previous in the first 10 minutes. All I am saying is I personally found it overwhelming. I am still 100% on board, and I am not saying 'they shouldn't have done that' and more 'I felt that personally a lot to take in so fast'. I hope that makes sense!

VeggieGamer

I like Pema more already!! XD Thanks for the info!

VeggieGamer

Thank you Lavender!! Glad you are enjoying this! I mention the new shows in the intro! :)

VeggieGamer

Ah! Thanks for the heads up on the next ep recap! I'll try to remember to check it out! :) Also, I mention Seven Havens in this video! :)

Jake M

So sorry, hadn't got around to watching it yet! My excitement got the better of me 🫣

Annabellae Priestly

I AM SO READY FOR THIS! I actually danced when I saw this posted - if you knew me, that would raise an eyebrow - it wasn't pretty. I love this show *so* much - Let's goooooo!

Rohân

Yes my man, awesome!

Declan

Been so excited for this, I know you're going to love Korra! Can't wait for you to get to season two, where the introduce on of the best characters in all of Avatar!

CR Ash

I haven't watched or read comments yet but I am so beyond excited for this watch through, you always have the best reactions to things because you feel and think so much on your reactions and feelings on things. Korra is one of my top 4 favorite characters in fiction and I can't wait for one of my favorite reactors to meet her!!

CR Ash

Now having watched, one thing I will say is that Aang was actually a prodigy and mastered the elements faster than ANY Avatar ever has, being able to do bending is much different from Mastering, Aang COULD have fire, water and earth bent even before he was known to be the Avatar but he never had a reason to try and when he found out about who he is, he hated it and ran away I will also say that all Avatar's have an element they find hard to master but its personality based on which one it is, like Kyoshi struggled most to master Earthbending, her natural birth element

Logical Dreamer

This may be a spoiler, but it also may sway you to eventually watch it, but...Kyoshi has a bigger role in the live-action. Okay, that's all I'm going to say on that. I tried watching Korra after I finished Avatar for the first time but I couldn't get into it. It's been 6 years, and I started watching it last night to see your reactions, and honestly, I kind of like it so far. I'm excited to see what you think about it.

Diego Reckholder

I have been waiting for you to react to LoK since you first mentioned it during the ATLA run. And I'm sooooooo excited for this 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

LouShirley

This is the first time I'm watching TLoK, so these are my first impression thoughts. I definitely feel that Korra is naive at the moment. Obviously it's not her fault, but she also throws her weight around as the avatar at the moment with little regard to the consequences. I hope she'll come to learn some restraint. Learning to observe and consider the context of her surroundings before acting on her impulses would be a difficult lesson for her, I think. 🤔

ClemSays

Yaaay Korra ! I'm glad you enjoy the set up. The show has its flaws but it's a great ride anyway.

SpectreN8

Considering the technology we saw with the fire nation in Atla it always made perfect sense to me that in a post war world that tech would eventually be shared with everyone else looking forward to your reactions as Korra is really special to so many of us flaws and all and I always respected that they weren't afraid to try something new

Stan Flamey

Kinda sad to see you didnt watch the avatar aang movie before korra, wouldve been nice to see a reaction without the knowledge of the future that korra gives. But i understand wanting to stay in release order, the way the fans originally saw it is often the best

qowkerf uinbfesd

Totally! We all currently live in a world where one part of humanity is living digitally and worrying about AI replacing all of us, while there are still a bunch of uncontacted stone age tribes hanging around in Brazil, or places like North Sentinel Island.

Goblin

I originally watched ATLA on TV (quite late though, I was definitely around the 18-20 range) and I need to preface this by saying I often struggle to get attached to main characters, and especially very "good" characters (they're fine !! I just lean towards characters that have to fight themselves to arrive at being a "good" guy much more often) So when I say Aang changed everything for me, (especially with him (usually) being a pacifist) I need you to know that all these years later I still hold him up in my mind as a masterclass on writing a well rounded, really interesting and deeply layered "good" character that never comes off as boring, preachy, or unreasonable. He wasn't even my favorite character in ATLA, not by a long shot. But it was the very first time I had truly loved and grew incredibly attached to a lead protagonist. Fast forward to hearing about TLOK coming out, and I couldn't contain my excitement. The wait was HORRIBLE !! But I remember everyone excitedly sharing fanart of what they thought the gaang would look like as adults, what they might have accomplished, etc. and that really did help. I remember clearing my schedule to sit in front of the TV to catch the first episode airing. I made it to the very first shot (during the narration at the start) where they show the statue of Aang and something in me just completely broke. The thought of seeing Aang, my adorable lil son who initially ran away from his avatar duties -- to now have a MASSIVE statue of him overlooking what is framed as the capital of the new world ???? I remember just straight up sobbing over what he had accomplished and what it must have meant to the entirety of the world lmao. I missed about 70% of the episode because I truly could not hold it together and had to find it online to watch later. :'( Something like that had never happened to me before, and hasn't happened since. Something about this series (both ATLA & TLOK, and hopefully the new stuff !) just hits so differently.

T_phoenix

I think you mentioned Lin Beifong once during ATLA reaction, saying someone (on youtube) mentioned, that one Arcane character looks like Lin Beifong. Do you remember that? If so do you agree?

Time

So happy you finally started korra I might be as excited as you are honestly love how deeply in love with the universe you are as I am, this season is a seriously strong one

Cari Ann

Kyoshi is my favorite character from ATLA too, so I totally get it veggie. I still have not read her comics but I bet they are amazing.

Alex Hopps

I remember literally nothing about korra, this will be the second time watching. It'll be nice to go into these blind every week. Although I have no particular emotional connection or affection for this show, ill go back into it with an open mind

mizu

FINALLY ‼️ the vibe in korra is definitely a big pull to swallow especially after freshly finishing atla however it perfectly represents the difference in both worlds as well as both avatars. as you have heard, korra is highly physically capable yet lacks composure and spirituality, while aang excelled at it. the same way the four nations were far more spiritually inclined in its world building than republic city is with its modernisation. it’s very well laid out in my opinion, i mean metal benders as the police force under the law of THE toph beifong??? AMAZING. even the equivalists have a perfectly reasonable foundation to their cause. i’m so excited for you to watch more of this because i do believe it is a decent successor (can’t say the same about seven havens …) season 1 and season 3 are likely the strongest of the show, 2 and 4 have good moments but i’ll believe we can get to the criticism in due time. and until then, enjoy the animation, the fights and specifically the music :’)

STAYoung

Dropping my thoughts as notes because I'm worried I'll spoil something if I'm too verbose. - Yes there are ups and downs with this series. A couple of ups for me are downs for others, and vice versa, so don't listen to us commenters too much. - JK Simmons and Steve Blum, two iconic voices I can recognise whenever I hear them. - Not a fan of toddler Korra's entrance, but maybe I just don't like toddlers. - I haven't watched the series in years and comparing it to Aang's story is inevitable but I like the emotion behind Korra's goodbye to her parents and Katara. I may remember the destination, and some of the pitstops, but this journey should be with a new perspective. - I do miss the Asian elements of the OG series. Prohibition New York is not my thing and especially in fantasy from other cultures, same for HP to Fantastic Beast as you said. - Korra has a lot to learn (before she's ready to save anyone) after being sheltered her whole life but she did lose that debate with that Equalist. Maybe don't threaten violence on the guy who says benders oppress non-benders. - Props to the show for showing how damaging bending would be in a modern world/city. Earthbending is the most practical element but imagine the potholes if we had it in real life. - Korra's character is written to be the opposite of Aang so it makes sense that in her first episode she is shown to be very headstrong. - How many non-benders are sympathetic to the Equalists? Are their concerns valid or is it just fear mongering? We'll see - One of the biggest problems the show had was how Nickelodeon treated it, averaging 13 episodes a season/book. Doesn't give much room for pacing, fleshing out characters and world building but fighting the studio to continue the series shows that there was love - Sokka just went to the farm to get some meat - Think you got it but to clarify; Kya and Bumi are Tenzin's siblings.

Stan Flamey

I really dont wanna be that guy so sorry in advance, but if you had just watched the movie first i think it wouldve helped a lot with this. It sets up korra so well imo

jolt45

I have to say, I disagree. The movie spoils several things in Korra. The best way to watch is always chronological release.
