Regarding the British vs American terminology... I think it's worth keeping in mind how young the audience was! My mom was reading these to me at 7 and I was learning new vocabulary constantly, just random words with no regional variations. (I vividly remember learning the word "bias" from these books when students are complaining about Snape. ) If they'd kept all the British-isms, I think it would've been a tad confusing for kids who might still be learning about the concept of countries let alone them having different words for things. Although I doubt they do the same for American kids' books when they're published elsewhere.

Benjamin Hütz

Thats my biggest complain about the books... you as a reader regularly getting told that gryffindor are the good guys and slytherin are the bad guys. The whole series is written from a biased perspective (of course as most major protagonists are in gryffindor). I hate that hufflepuff and ravenclaw get so little attention overall

Melina W

i think photos in the wizarding world are basically like gifs! and about portraits i'll quote the official website: "While a portrait is a perfect shadow of their sitter, a ghost is more like an imprint – which carries their unfinished business into the afterlife. While portraits tend to advise and watch over the living world, ghosts can be a bit more pro-active, and can be shaped by new experiences. Nearly Headless Nick could still be hurt by the Basilisk, but as Harry astutely observed, ‘he couldn’t die again’. While paintings can certainly remember things and reiterate catchphrases of their former selves, they are more like an ‘aura’ – while ghosts are far more... fleshed out, if you’ll excuse the pun. In an interview, J.K. Rowling said of the difference: ‘If Harry had a portrait of his parents it would not help him a great deal. If he could meet them as ghosts, that would be a much more meaningful interaction...’"

Using magic after being expelled: You can't legally drive with out passing a test, same with magic you can't legally use magic without passing school.

emmainkeri

These book club videos are my absolute favorite thing at the moment, we've barely started and I'm already dreading the moment you finish the series 🥲😂

emmainkeri

"Where's the cannon?" is my favourite line from that chapter as well! Dudley cracks me up.

Josh Z

Ravenclaw has it’s representation and so does Huffelpuff but as the series is told from Harry’s perspective it’s not something that can be helped. It’s biased because Harry is not one who makes loads of friends, he really only has five very good friends and the rest are just classmates. I think it’s wrong to criticize the books for focusing on Harry’s biased because the intent is to put the reader in Harry’s head as much as possible. Many people seem to forget this and deem it poor writing but it does make sense for most of the main kids to be in Gryffindor since Harry Is the vehicle through which the story is told.

emmainkeri

Important fact about the audiobooks! Both versions were recorded in 1999, long before the movies came out. But I honestly have no clue how Stephen Fry managed to sound so much like Robbie Coltrane's Hagrid. Just a coincidence apparently?

Melina W

regarding merlin being a slytherin, i think one thing about slytherins is that because they're so ambitious and cunning they tend to make names for themselves, be it in a good or a bad way. so i'm not surprised there'd be a lot of famous (or infamous) wizards who were slytherins

Maia

I'm five minutes in and already have comments on your comments so I'm just gonna type them as we go and see how long this comment is by the end lol. CHAPTER 4 NOTES: -"Dudley says, stupidly" - remember that Harry is the narrator lol. He thinks pretty much everything Dudley says is stupid. -Actually, in the movie Hagrid does reach out, grab the rifle, and bend it at a 90 degree angle so it's pointed straight up. He doesn't tie it into a knot though and I agree that's probably for the best lol. -Good catch that Hagrid tends to look down on muggles. This will generally be the case throughout the wizarding world. It's not a case of all the nice wizards love muggles and all the dark wizards want to murder them. There's a lot more grey there. In general, wizards look down on muggles, which is why pureblood aristocracy still exists. -Yes, James (and Lily) will both be much more developed as people in the books. Harry naturally puts them on a pedestal, but it will be made very clear that they were just normal people with flaws. -This is more information from Pottermore than the books, but Molly Weasley was a Prewett before marriage. In that scene, Hagrid is saying that Voldemort killed her family (most importantly her brothers). -LOVE that you caught that Hagrid was pretty unfair to Dudley, especially because Hagrid doesn't know that Dudley is bullying Harry at that point. Hagrid is so well-loved in the HP community that lots of people over look this. But, like every character in this series, Hagrid is flawed, which is what makes him great. CHAPTER 5 NOTES: -Rowling does a great job of seeding information in the early books that will be important later (some of which you've already touched on and I am clenching my fingers to not draw your attention to it lol). This is naturally much harder to do in the movies, but I really enjoy it because it makes the world feel more full and developed. -Hufflepuff 100% gets a bad rep in the books and interestingly, that will become a minor plot point later. It's a bit like the way wizards look down on muggles - Hufflepuffs are accepted, but generally thought to be "lesser" than the other houses. When you mentioned in one of your reactions that you were sure Hagrid was a Hufflepuff I laughed so hard remembering this scene lol. -Lol you're right, Ollivander is a family name. CHAPTER 6 NOTES: -Lol yes. Dudley sucks, but he has extremely legitimate reasons to fear wizards lol. -Neville's guardian is his grandmother :) -Yep! Another example of wizards looking down on muggles. Even the Weasleys, who are easily the most accepting pureblood family, still sometimes make comments that imply that muggles are inferior. -Potions are more than just mixing magical ingredients, you need to use a wand and cast spells to make them. For that reason, squibs cannot make them. -Good catch about Ron's hand-me-down wand. Ron's feelings about his family are very complicated and will be a running theme throughout the series. Nice to see you picking up on his feelings so early :) -We have Mars Bars in Canada! -Paintings are not ghosts, but they sort of have a shadow of the personality of the person they are depicting. More details about ghosts, paintings, and photos are coming :) -The school sends a representative to explain that the child is magical at the time they get their letter. My guess is that Hermione has known throughout the summer at this point. -They do mention the break in at Gringotts in the movie, but it occurs much later in the Great Hall, rather than on the train. I watched the whole video super happily. I am happy to watch as much as you post. For me at least, don't worry about the length at all. I was delighted when I saw this was an hour. So glad you're enjoying it!

emmainkeri

I really appreciate you worrying about him though. Of course we're "supposed" to be laughing at the pig tail, but at the end of the day Dudley is the result of his parents and he did not deserve the violence done to him in this chapter. He was miserable and crying, hadn't had much food at all and then got magically attacked by a stranger, a half-giant. He's only eleven years old..

Ryan O'Driscoll

There is some early installment weirdness at play in this book, I think. Mrs Weasley asking what platform they are on, and Ron's wand being examples. Photos and portraits are more like a snapshot at the time that they were done. They have characteristics of the person, but are not the person. A photo will typically emulate the behaviour of them in that situation when it was taken, but a portrait can be imbued with a more complex personality. In the books, Rowling writes some character's speech in an accent, so Fry picked up on that for Hagrid. His pronunciation of Malfoy put a lot of emphasis on the "foy", but he tones that down at later points. His ability to perform the characters believably without going overboard is great. Love the second installment and still like the format. I did see a suggestion for a live reaction, which I can see why that would be impractical. Snippets might be possible, provided it doesn't break any laws, but not essential.

emmainkeri

I think in Hagrid's case it's more about his wand getting snapped, he's just not allowed to do magic. There are kids getting home schooled, and kids are able to do magic long before going to school, too. You can legally use magic without ever attending school. You just have to be born a wizard.

Eshi

Hi Veggie! So your questions about ghosts and portraits will be answered in the last chapter of book 5. If you would like a summary on that this early on happy to type that out for you. About Hermoine knowing about being a witch - she also would be told around the time Harry starts getting his first letter. Someone from the school will obviously visit their family...inform her and get family about wizards and escort them to diagon alley to help with the shopping. Hermoine reads all the books during summer because she wants to ensure she isn't behind or she's not good enough...as you know she considered being expelled from school worse than getting killed by Fluffy ( the 3 headed dog).

Dara Jeeling

I always wondered... Why the heck does Mrs Weasley not know the platform, since 2 of her sons are already out of the school and three more are in... So how the heck does she not know the platform number and asks just loud enough for Harry to hear her XD And there are "mean" wizards in each house. Peter Pettigrew was Gryffindor, Quirell and Lockhard are Ravenclaw and not the nicest people. I bet there are totally normal Slytherins, as well...

emmainkeri

Most people seem to agree that she was just saying it, sort of testing the kids and asking them "alright then, what's the platform number again?"

emmainkeri

Just for the record, the video isn't long at all. I'd listen to you talk about the books for 10 hours straight if I could!

Kat

It gives me so much joy to see your appetite for all of the new details and information we are getting in the books so far! Didn't mind the long video at all, everything you had to say was great. Hogwarts letters go to wizard-born children around their 11th birthday, just before school starts. Hermione and other muggle-born children have their letter delivered in person by a member of staff that explains things to the family. For example, you saw in the movie for HBP that Dumbledore visited Tom Riddle in the orphanage in person. Isn't it interesting how early on we are seeing a more realistic and well-rounded view of characters in the book vs movies. E.g. you picking up on Hagrid's subtle prejudices and feeling a bit sorry for Dudley. "I don't think we've seen Voldemort laugh in the movies yet"... 😆 If you know, you know Love the idea of picking a few Patron comments for the video. Whatever way works best for you is fine with me! But maybe it would require less planning for you, if we gave our comments after each video. And then you dedicated 5 minutes of the next video to questions and comments that came up previously, then get into the new chapters. I don't mind either way though, do whatever works for you! Thank you for taking the time to make such wonderful, thoughtful and not at all rushed content for us when you have a lot going on. From your fellow proud 'Puff, Kat 🖤💛

Judith

I dont know If anyone already commented on the photos and pictures and stuff. So whenever wizards take photos, the people in them move and interact with each other but appearently not with the real people looking at them. Paintings are different. Anyone can be painted but i guess in order to move and interact, they have to be dead. So they are not ghosts, but they are not alive either. At least i dont know of any character that is alive and has a painting at the same time. The thing that confused me was the chocolate frog card of Dumbledore. When the Pictures wanished, Ron says that he cant stick around all day which would mean, that every card showing an alive Wizard is empty for most of the time. But maybe its just something we have to except because its magic. Also those cards must be different from photos because in the third movie, Ron shows Harry a Photo of himself in the papers. So people dont have to "stay" in the photos like they do in the cards and paintings. Its really confusing, but thats my understanding of the painting/picture/photo Situation. I hope it helps.

Garry (Not Jerry)

As a Brit, hearing American English terms like “soccer” and “pants” (instead of trousers) in Jim Dale’s traditional English Accent is weirdly jarring

Hi again! Had a bit of a struggle with this comment. Kept posting it before I was done. Anyway! Here are some extra tidbits of info. Keep up the awesome posts!! CH 4: Hagrid didn't technically tie Uncle Vernon's gun in a knot, but he did bend it in the movie. Also, the actor's name is Richard Griffiths :) Order of Merlin is an award that can be won in the wizarding world. I think there's Order of Merlin first, second, and third class. I believe the reason Petunia says that Lily was "blown up" is because the house was destroyed when Voldemort's killing curse backfired. Because she wasn't close with her sister, she may not have entirely understood what happened. CH 5: The difference between the US and UK versions...basically they think Americans are stupid and can't figure out what some of the UK slang means. To be fair though, a jumper in the US is like overalls with a skirt instead of shorts/pants. But still. We're not that dumb. I HIGHLY recommend going to Leavsesden Studios in London! I've been 3 times and it is phenomenal. My recommendation if you do go, plan to spend the entire day. I got there early, like 10 or 11 am and had to rush at the end because they were closing. When you buy your ticket, you schedule a specific time to arrive. Give yourself as much time as you can! CH 6: Ghosts! You will definitely learn more about ghosts later on. The moving portraits don't mean that you died at Hogwarts, they're not ghosts. I'm not sure they ever discuss how all of the portraits came to be at Hogwarts. They start out static, not moving, but they are spelled to move. But! We do learn later on how the ghosts came to reside at Hogwarts. Here's an article originally from Pottermore that talks about the paintings: https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/hogwarts-portraits What you said about wands not working well if they're not custom to you...remember that for another important character. I won't say more if you don't want spoilers :) We used to have Mars bars in the states. Not anymore. I think the closest your Mars bars is our Three Musketeers. I think... "Hermione seems very intense in the books." FACTS! Haha! If I'm remembering correctly, McGonagall hand delivered her letter to her home the summer before she turned 11 and explained everything to Hermione and her parents, but Hermione decided she wanted to wait a year and prepare. Hermione is actually almost a year older than Harry and Ron. Her birthday is mid September, so she was informed when she was 10. So she's almost 12 when she begins Hogwarts. We learn SO much more about Ron's family in the books than we do in the movies, which I love, because the Weasleys are amazing! Once again, I'm so so glad you're experiencing the books. It makes me happy :) Maybe once you've gotten through the movies and the books, you could check out the Very Potter Musicals. I don't recommend them before finishing the books! They are parodies and everything is kind of miss-mashed up, so having read the books first is a must. I think they're hilarious! Also, as a fellow Hufflepuff, people will bash on the house. But we know we're awesome! Tonks was a Hufflepuff. Newt Scamander was a Hufflepuff. Keep your chin up ;)

Jacob sparks

Home schooling is still school. Yes shouldn't say with out attending ment passing school because Yes he was expelled so can no longer legally do magic. Kids doing magic before school/17 is not legal but they can't police it in a magic home and they understand young kids can't always control it.

Marc Post Jr

I can't get over the fact how much you look like Jude Law as Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beast movies

Tiffany Dollard

I will comment more once i watch...but i have to get ready for work. One thing i will say now though is that there is a fan theory that Dumbledore asked the Weasley's do assist harry and that mrs.weasley says what she says that loudly to help harry notice another wizard so he could ask someone for help or at least witness entering the platform.

Diego Zenhäusern

You don't have to apologize for making long videos! We're here to hear/ see your reactions, so as far as I'm concerned as long as you still have something to say about the chapters the video can't be to long ^^

itsanursething

Gilderoy Lockhart has multiple paintings of himself and he interacts with them in the second book. I'm pretty sure anyone can have a portrait done, but there's a spell to make them move :) From my understanding, anyone in a portrait or photo or card can go wherever they want at any time they want, even when dead. I think it's explained a bit more later on in the books, or maybe I read it on Pottermore.

Judith

Omg i'm stupid! You are right! I totally forgot Lockhart. So does that mean there can be multiple paintings of the same person and all of them have a Person present simultaneously? Maybe some do and some dont? !!!SPOILER!!! Because in the last book, there is the painting at grimmeault place with the old headmaster where its empty whenever the painted Person is at Hogwarts. But if the people can only be in one painting at the time, there would be so many empty paintings all the time.... Imagine an art Museum... 😂😂 But maybe i still missunderstand....

Kat

Judith that bit at the end is such a good point, would like to know the answer myself!

Kat

Forgot to say, would love too see snippets of you visiting the Harry Potter studio tour, kings cross etc that you mentioned! Such great content and you would have a blast! Make sure you go after watching Fantastic Beasts though as I believe they have some bits from that too ☺️

Kunzite Blossom

I feel like Mrs. Weasley asking about the platform is on purpose. If you've ever watched SCB's "Dumbledore's Plan" series on youtube they actually have a theory revolving around that. It's a great watch.

Kunzite Blossom

I would recommend watching SCB's "Dumbledore's Plan" series on youtube they actually have a theory revolving around that. It's a great watch. It actually makes so many plot holes make sense. Granted its all theories and piecing stuff together but they make sense.

Loveinthehat

The book details are so interesting, the movies are nice but it just adds so much more having extra information. I weirdly like Hagrid kind of having that weird bias against muggles, especially because he’s a character who would call someone out who says something horrible about muggle borns like you said, he probably doesn’t realise that deep down he has those weird views about muggles that is in his head as well. The weasley’s are such an interesting family, obviously in the books we just met them now but in the books every time we get to spend with that family is some of my favourites. I think they did well with Fred and George in the movie in comparison to some of the others but the way they are in the books is great, you can tell exactly the type of people they are and the fact they are the one who meets Harry first and then kind of introduce Ron to him is such an older brother thing to do. Also Lee Jordan (the guy with dreadlocks the quidditch commentator) is Fred and George’s friend and they are in the same year, they are all in third year in this book. So he isn’t new to quidditch anyway since this is his third year in the school. Ron having a hand-me-down wand (especially one which seems to be almost falling apart) makes sense with some things how he struggles, it isn’t his own wand and it’s quite important for wizards to have their own that works with them to teach their full potential. You can also see how Ron almost feels somewhat as a last thought and a bit insecure, even small things like his mum not paying attention to the fact that he doesn’t like those certain sandwiches she makes him, even tho he keeps telling her doesn’t seem like much but the fact his siblings are so successful and he’s the only one that doesn’t really have his own wand kind of shows that even tho he loves him family in his head he feels like an afterthought. Also we can kind of see that the weasley’s don’t spend money that smartly either, because Molly and Arthur are great but you notice how they bought Percy a new owl for becoming a prefect rather than get Ron his own wand which should be more of a priority? Percy is very interesting as well, tbh I love his and the twins dynamic as well they are so different.

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah the pigtail is one of those things (like e.g. Dumbledore giving ou last minute points to Griffindor to effectively humiliate Slytherin) you think are funny or cool as a child but are actually really fucked up🤔🙈

emmainkeri

The points could've or probably should've been given before the feast without the added humiliation, but they did deserve the points and the win. You could even argue that the Slytherin house needed a bit of humbling (they were in the lead partly because of Snape's favoritism), but I'm not sure that was the way to do it.

emmainkeri

I know what you mean by home schooling still being school, but I don't think the law says you have to finish or even go to school to legally do magic. Fred and George never finished school, nor did Harry or Ron.

emmainkeri

And I'm just referring to your original comment saying you can't legally use magic without passing school, which isn't true. But being of age is another thing :)

Diego Zenhäusern

Hmm, yeah good point! I never even stopped tl think about it but so it's more about the fact that he has "shown" to not be responsible enough to perform magic (due to his alledged actions) and not about the fact that he didn't finish school🤔

Diego Zenhäusern

Oh yeah giving the points is mostly fine (though the point system itself is deeply flawed as there don't seem to be any guidelinws as to how much points specific actions are worth) but engineering it so that Griffindor wins by just a small margin and openly humiliating them is really fucked up. It also is no wonder that Slytherin breads more dark wizards if they're looked down upon like this per default😕

Diego Zenhäusern

Her saying that beeing expelled is worse than dying is often laughed upon. But it has been pointed out to me by a friend that that assertion isn't as crazy as it sounds in the first moment. Because beeing expelled means beeing forbidden from performing magic anymore (like Hagrid) and imagine how hard it would have to be to know that there's magic in the world and that you could even use it but you aren't allowed to. It would be psychological torture to me🙈

Sylver

Once you past OWLs your allowed to do magic, though your supposed to wait til of age outside school. Newts are just to qualify for job and mastery programs.

Jacob sparks

Ok yes if we want to break it fully down yes. I was just trying to give a simple way of explaining why he is not ment to do magic why he wants to hide him doing magic but why he still can do magic. Just because you don't have a licence you can still drive a car but you wouldn't want to get caught.

Thomas Gabriel White

Hagrid didn't actually insult Hufflepuff, he said that's what everyone says. He never finished his sentence because Harry interrupted him, but it looked like he was going to defend them.

Kellie Fritz

Great breakdown of the chapters! Can't wait for the next Potter Book Club!

Phoney Phoenix

Great video Veggie, don't worry about the length I personally loved it, keep it up :)

SparrowPriest

Love the breakdowns. I think 1 hour-ish is a good length to cover 3 chapters. Later on there'll be even longer chapters so you might need to do 2 instead of 3 if you want to cover it all (book 5 especially, just a heads up). The ghosts are covered in more detail at the end of book 5. The paintings aren't really explained as far as I can remember but the portraits of hogwarts headmasters are mentioned somewhere. I also would like to add a thing about the Weasleys that I don't think many people are aware of - it's not that they're poor, it's more that fact that they're at one point 9 people living in 1 house and only Arthur has a paying job. After Bill and Charlie leave they're a bit better I'd imagine but it's still 7 people in 1 house with only 1 provider. I'm sure Arthur's salary is decent but Molly for some reason (probably to take care of 7 children) is a stay at home mom and isn't being paid a salary for her work. Just something to think about

Lili

YES! That's what it is 😅 I've been trying to place my finger on who he reminds me of for ages!

aliennin

"I think squibs are the most fascinating" what a hufflepuff thing to say lmao.

aliennin

I agree with the other commenter that she's just "testing" them. When you're raising kids pretty much all of your communication with them is questions, especially young kids, to make sure they're thinking and not just blundering through life ya know. Same thing as asking a child "who is that?" when a family member comes home. You know who it is, obviously. But you still have to interact with the kid at their level. And yeah the kids are older here, but doing it for years and years and years, I imagine it's pretty ingrained.

Laura Klaassen Minnick

My understanding is that you can leave after 5th year, after OWL exams, but most kids remain out of parental pressure, but also, fact is, in their world as well as ours, dropping out significantly narrows your post-school opportunities.

Laura Klaassen Minnick

Worth noting that IIRC JKR said that Hufflepuff never produced a wizard that went to the Dark side.

Hanneli Norrgard

Hufflepuff gets a bad rap throughout the books, really. In fact, there's a part of one book where it flat out says that the house takes everyone who doesn't fit into the other three houses. I'm a Ravenclaw, and the movies really become all Gryffindor vs Slytherin, but at least Ravenclaw doesn't get beat up like Hufflepuff does.

Dara Jeeling

well, they are old enough to go to boarding school... For me that means they are not that small, even Ginny is 10 My kids would havae looked at me like "realy mom are you stupid?" some may even have voiced this ... And I have 5 myself and still... Thanks for the ideas though!

Dara Jeeling

there can still be "Mean" Hufflepuffs. I mean... the way they sort of shunned Harry in book two was not nice. Not talking about "going to the dark side" just about being mean / unfair / biased. Normal traits in normal people

Theresa Sonntag

For the books I would agree. But in the movies Ravenclaw really gets the short end of the stick. They didn't even get our mascot and colours right ;(

sarah4hp

I actually think it makes sense that it is very Gryffindor focused and biased as Harry is in Gryffindor. Had he been in another house then THAT house would have been the main focus, so no matter what it would be biased towards whichever house Harry became a part of I feel. So yeah... as a Hufflepuff I am not really that bothered or upset about that 🤷‍♀️

Garry (Not Jerry)

Hagrid was based on a real person that JK Rowling knew. And Hagrid’s accent is baked into the text. But even if it wasn’t clear from the text exactly what accent she was going for, Stephen Fry could have asked. I think J.K has done interviews where she mentioned that Hagrid is from the West Country.

emmainkeri

It's not about the accent, the voice he does for Hagrid sounds like an imitation of Robbie Coltrane!

Garry (Not Jerry)

Y’know a cool thing I noticed when watching the first movie. The actors saying the word “philosopher’s stone” vs “sorcerer’s stone” is never actually captured on camera. Notably when all three of them shout “we know about the philosopher’s stone!”- just as Hagrid shuts the door on them. It’s so that they can use the exact same footage for both versions and replace the audio. Pretty clever. Entirely pointless of course because there is no reason to change philosopher to sorcerer (do Americans not know what philosophers are?) but never mind.

Hanneli Norrgard

Without "Goblet of Fire", I feel that the same would have happened with Hufflepuff, though. They had to include that house because of Cedric, but it still felt really shafted in all of the others. The movies just willy nilly change people's houses to make things "easier".

electroshock therapy

They do say it camera. Harry says it straight to McGonagall while the camera is focused on Harry. Also, when Hermione is reading her "light reading" book, she has two distinct takes. On "Sorcerer's," she says the "That's what Fluffy's guarding. That's what Snape wants" quite softly but an air of mystery. On "Philosopher's," her delivery is much harsher.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Huh. I’ll need to re-watch that bit. I guess maybe they also just used different takes for some of it.

VeggieGamer

Thanks so much for the great comment, Loveinthehat! I have really come to love how interesting the Weasley's are!!

VeggieGamer

Oh great!! Thanks, glad you are ok with how long this one was!

VeggieGamer

Kat that is such a good point about Dumbledore visiting Tom (as Tom didn't know he was a wizard)! That makes so much sense! And yeah I'll put out a blog asking for opinions on the next chapters when I start work on it! :)

VeggieGamer

This is very interesting!! I have to admit since the first movie I have been interested in the difference between photos, paintings and ghosts! :)

electroshock therapy

That's what I thought too. He was either going moving on to insult Slytherin or defend Hufflepuff. And the key word is "everyone says" and that it wasn't necessarily his point of view.

VeggieGamer

Haha maybe I will have to cosplay for when I do those movies XD

VeggieGamer

Thanks Diego!! Glad you are ok with the longer vids! :)

VeggieGamer

Ah thanks for the heads up about Fantastic Beasts! I'll give it some thought! :)

VeggieGamer

Thanks Sparrow, yeah I think we will have to play it by ear when we get to the longer chapters / books! Very true about the Weasley's, I worded that wrong!

VeggieGamer

Yeah very true Hanneli! I guess it makes sense for the movies to focus most on the Gry / Sly stuff. Would definitely love some more Ravenclaw in them!

I really like these videos being long. I'd rather have a good discussion where you share your thoughts as much as you want instead of a short video that feels unsatisfying. And in my case, I'm watching these videos in three stages after reading a chapter each. In my case, the longer videos are really beneficial as they feel like three good-sized videos that just happen to be merged into one.

Haha that is fair, Sarah! I guess it took me by surprise! XD

I'm American. I remember when I read the first book after all the hype (and thought it was FANTASTIC) and wondered why the American publisher changed it. Then I got really angry about it. It's like the publisher thought their own consumers and JK Rowling's audience were too stupid to know or research it for ourselves. Gaaa! I still get upset about it.

Elizabeth Mann

I'm loving hearing your thoughts on the book. Can't wait for part 3! Also, just a note, I love the music you're using in the background.

Shannon Elizabeth

We need to have some Veggie Gamer Potter Book Club pins made lol! I absolutely love your videos and have been rereading the books along with them. Can’t wait for part 3! 💛🦡💛 Hufflepuff pride!!

The order of merlin was mentioned by gilderoy Lockhart in the first lesson. He goes “Gilderoy Lockhart order of merlin, 3rd class, honorary member of the dark force defence league, and 5 time winner of witch weekly’s most charming smile award.” Of course I don’t believe a word except the smile award! And even that is it charming?

For halloween it is shown in the movies can’t remember about before this but in godric’s hollow, when Harry and Hermione go it says it on their gravestone.

Ollivander’s is a family business so the current mr. Ollivander is Garrick, he’s about 90 at this point, (young for wizards). Though there’s no mention of any later generations ever. He will I think be the last one. Just read that he has an unnamed son.

This format is good I think reading it would be way too long. Most of us have read and seen them multiple times already. I think we just want the reaction. But that’s just me.

BobBro

The bending of the rifle is also in the movie..😅

VeggieGamer

Yeah that is true, Benjamin! It definitely does set up Gryffindor as being 'the best' early on!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Electro! Glad you like the longer videos!

VeggieGamer

Oh thanks Elizabeth! The music is from Oblivion :) Think it works well for these! XD

VeggieGamer

Hahaha love the pins idea, Shannon! XD And thanks for reading along!!

VeggieGamer

Haha yeah sorry Bob! I didn't remember it at the time XD

I'm late to this but I'm looking forward to this. My grandmother passed away last week and it's been chaotic since then so I really needed a comfort video and what better then the Potter book club? 💛🖤 I always love going back to re-read the books and I love how in depth these videos are for it!

Both versions of the audiobook were made before the first movie came out. Stephen Fry's version came out in the UK, followed a week or two later by Jim Dale's version in the US. Also, please make the episodes as long as you feel you need them to be. I could listen to you all day if it was up to me!

Melissa C

The moving photo and the portraits vs ghosts things are explained a bit more in future, so it will make more sense

Ken Hampton

Loving these reviews. no need to be brief, take as much time as you need. I, for one, have no problem with long, detailed videos. Hufflepuff 4 life!

The name Malfoy is ACTUALLY from the French “Mal foi” means “bad faith, an act with bad intentions, or a malicious act”. so he's probably pronouncing it the french way.
