This part of the Book Club is now closed! Thanks everyone for taking part and don't worry if you missed it, there is always next time! :)

Hi guys!  Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video! The last one went great, so let's do it again! :)

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "Hallowe'en", "Quidditch" and "The Mirror of Erised" in this one! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask though, try to keep them fairly short (say, 2 or 3 sentences). That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Let me know what you think!

OH! And if you would like to leave a comment but would rather I didn't read it out in the video, please feel free. Be sure to say you would rather it not be used in your comment.

Thanks, guys!! :)

Has anyone pointed out to you that Erised is desire backwards.

PaulaC

Unlike in the movie, Ron did not need prompting or instructions from Hermione to take out the troll. He remembered the spell, and remembered her lesson on how to properly say the spell even if he wasn’t happy with her doing so at the time.

PaulaC

Once the 3 became friends, Hermione started changing. That little rule follower set a teacher on fire to save Harry, and that never would have happened a few chapters ago.

Annie

Although it’s exciting to watch Quidditch on a screen, Harry not doing anything until the Snitch flies past him in the movie annoys me. That and how the movie makes it seem like Quidditch has no rules or fouls whatsoever.

Diego Zenhäusern

Since you're listeni g to the audiobook you probably didn't notice: The whole inscription on the mirror of Erised can be read backwards (though the individual words are not broken up correctly) and it reads: "I show not your face but your hearts desire."

Xeph

I think it would be better for Quidditch if the snitch only awarded 50 points instead of 150. Also, in the movie Wood originally tells Harry that if he catches the snitch they win the game, which confused a lot of first-time watchers before it's later revealed that it gives 150 points.

Virginia Harp

The mirror of erised is my favorite chapter from this book. It's just so sad that his greatest desire is his family. Also one of my favorite bits from this book is this bit right here. 'But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.'

Diego Zenhäusern

That quote might be my favorite line of this book...it's just so simple and yet beautiful!❤

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I never undedstood, why they put that line in the movie😕 It just makes no sense😅

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, but it's also kinda funny how Hooch wants to see a fair game and then seemingly just peaces out and doesn't call any fouls😅

Melina W

i agree for school quidditch level, but for professional quidditch 150 points seems fine

Melina W

i like how in the book ron's reaction makes it clear how rare and special the invisibility cloak is. the way he reacts in the movie makes it seem like they're really common

Xeph

It only makes sense in professional Quidditch because Rowling wrote that it makes sense in professional Quidditch. Frankly, it makes even less sense in professional Quidditch that one team could get that far ahead in points at all, and beyond that, it makes no sense that the other seeker would then catch the snitch anyway, losing the game for their team.

Hilde

Quidditch definitely has its flaws, but I don’t quite agree with the assessment of professional sports. Sports are weird in the way that unbelievable things do happen, actually quite regularly (I used to be a massive football (soccer) fan haha). Anyone remember the World Cup match between Germany and Brazil back in 2014? 🥴

BeckyB00b

In chapter 12 when it said ‘Ron grunted in his sleep’ I snorted, because to me, Ron will always be called Grunt now. Grunt by name, Grunt by nature! Stay awesome ⚡️

NoProfileName

One of my favorite things from chapter 12 is the Weasleys bewitching snowballs hitting Quirrell in the back of his turban. Or I guess you could say right off Voldemort's face! lol

Lili

I love Lee Jordan's (very biased) commentary of the Quidditch matches 😅 and McGonnagal's reactions to it. Also think Stephen Fry would make a great Dumbledore now that he's older. He's got the whimsy and the warmth ❤

Garry (Not Jerry)

I always wondered why Hermione didn’t tell professor Mcgonagall the truth about the troll. Not being at the feast because she was upset is surely better than attempting to go after the troll herself. And she still could have explained that Harry and Ron came to rescue her.

Maria

This might be way too personal, but have you contemplated what you would see in the mirror of Erised? For me it would probably be animals living their best lives in a vegan world. Also, I can tell JK isn't big on sports considering how OP she makes the seeker! Which I think could be solved by getting either points or ending the match upon catching the snitch, as opposed to both.

Lili

I've wondered that before and I think it might be because it was Ron that upset her and so it was because of him that she was crying in the bathroom 🤔 So possibly she didn't want Ron getting any heat for that 🤷‍♂️

Kat

I came to comment this too haha, love it!

Amanda Levy

What are your thoughts on Fred and George throwing enchanted snowballs to follow Professor Quirrell around and bounce off the back of his turban - now that you know that Voldermort is on the back of Quirrell's head? :-)

Amanda Levy

Shoot, I came here to say the same, and did! Oops! Sorry for the duplicate!

Lili

Also, I love how Ron and Hermione are like an old married couple from the get go 😅 "don't nag!" 😃 and how Harry consoles Neville and gives him a little pep talk ❤

Giorgia M

I think it’s one of the first big indicators of Ron’s character with what he sees in the mirror. It helps to set a backdrop for the choices he makes in goblet and deathly hallows, the real insecurity he has about being overshadowed and how all he really wants is to be respected and admired. To outclass his friends and family, prove himself and how that ties in with his family dynamic. Very interesting!!!

Loveinthehat

I love Lee Jordan’s commentary in the books, you can really tell he’s Fred and George’s friend I wish they showed his personality like that in the movies. Also I like how both the teams were getting at each other rather than the movies were slytherin was just cheating with no punishments.

zulu

Is it just me or is Hogwarts unreasonably huge? I mean there are fewer than 15 classes, each having its own classroom, and there are a few more places we get introduced to (like common rooms). But what other rooms or special places do you think Hogwarts could have within its 7 floors, dungeons and dozens of towers?

Loveinthehat

It would’ve got Harry and Ron into trouble, because she was there because Ron upset her plus they accidentally locked her in with the troll. Plus Hermione was coming off too strong and ‘uptight’ so her lying for them and making it seem like she broke the rules showed that she could. Plus... actually I think Hermione would rather people think she’s brave trying to fight the troll because she’s smart rather than the teachers knowing she was crying in the bathroom. That’s embarrassing especially to a kid.

Annette Elliott

After Dumbledore explains to Harry why Ron sees what he sees in the Mirror of Erised, think about the depth of character it takes for Ron to be best friends with Harry who is the most famous kid in his world.

GEMsMama

I love that in the books Harry sees his entire Potter family. Not just his mom and dad, but everyone he’d ever dreamed about❤️

GEMsMama

I love when Harry gets to throw mess back in Malfoy’s face. Especially about his broom. “And it’s really thanks to Malfoy here that I’ve got it,” :: chefs kiss ::

Amanda Levy

Lee Jordan's character was basically non existent in the movies :-( If you didn't know about him from the books, he'd be so easy to look over in the movies. I adored the commentary during the match! Lee is so funny!

Xeph

It wasn't really that it couldn't happen. It's more that for the 150 points thing to really make sense, it would need to be happening all the time, like almost every game, to be honest. Otherwise, in most games, the seeker catching the snitch just decides the winner, and the rest of the game is irrelevant.

Henry

I really wish there was more of Oliver Wood and Quidditch in general in the movies.

Zachary

While Alan Rickman is a great actor and did a great job with Snape the main issue I have with him is his age. He i supposed to be the same age as Harry's parents who died when they were only 21 years old. So in the books Snape is only in his early 30's.

Annah SilverThread

I loved the fact that Mrs. Weasly took the time to knit up, not only, her children some seasonal sweaters, but also Harry. Simply because Ron stated that he might not get anything that Christmas. An absolute sweet and heartfelt gesture that I feel gets overlooked a little bit, because its something that happens only for a moment and from someone that isn't necessarily in the scene with the current characters. <3

Kristen Campbell

Dumbledore knew harry was sneaking around at night, maybe even knowing they were looking up Nicolas Flamel as well and didn't stop them shows he wanted them to figure everything out. Also what Quidditch position would you play if you could?

Methanoutput

Quidditch is in the movies portrayed as a very physical sport, with the ref basically doing nothing, that always bugged me. In the books Madam Hooch actually calls many fouls. Can't wait to hear your thoughts about those chapters!

sarah4hp

Ch. 11 - "She (Hermione) didn't even stop to say sorry as she knocked Professor Quirrell head-first into the row in front". Such a quick throw-away line that means so much when looking back. Hermione DID actually save Harry's life by stopping the teacher jinxing his broom - it just wasn't the teacher she was actually suspecting and targeting, nor the way she planned to do it.

Maia

I just want to draw your attention to one point that you may not have realized: if you do the math, James and Lily were 21 when they died. I think this is interesting for people to keep in mind when they read about Harry seeing them for the first time in the mirror of erised, especially when adults read it. While to 11 year old Harry an adult is an adult, to me as an adult reader, they were very much still kids themselves. Just an interesting perspective to throw out there :)

GEMsMama

I hate that the significance of the invisibility cloak is just glanced over in the movies. It’s just a line on a note that it belonged to his father. This is the first thing, we know of, that Harry posses that belonged to one of his parents. And for him it’s personal! As seen by him choosing to use it alone for the first time to explore the castle. He’s been so desperate, his whole life, for a personal connection to his family. Now he’s in this place, with this thing, and he’s never felt closer to them. I think it’s beautiful that it leads him to finding the mirror, and to start him on his hero’s journey. Not to mention the memory he calls upon when he first makes progress with his patronus. It all starts with his fathers cloak❤️😭🤧

Cora

These past few chapters really show us the main characters flaws- in midnight duel we see Harry's rashness in agreeing to a fight with malfoy so easily, we see Hermione's snobby sort of need to be right all the time and nag others, and Ron's poor self image or insecurity. But what's good about that is it let's us see their growth as the story progresses. The movie sort of glosses over some of those traits which unfortunately lowers the impact of their growth/development.

Thunderbird

One of my favorite parts in the book! :D

Lovegood

I love that you see more of the ‘side’ characters (the room mates, the quidditch players, Lee Jordan, who is so much fun). And that the trio has more ‘character’, Harry’s funny side, it shows that Ron is smarter than portrayed in the movies, and Hermione is more human. Mirror of erised is probably my favorite chapter of the book. It shows so much of Harry and Ron’s motivations. It’s also interesting that Dumbledore loaned to cloak from James, knowing now what you know about the deathly hallows. Harry feels like part of a family for the very first time, celebrating with the Weasley brothers. I think Percy in the books is a really interesting character as well. In the movies he is barely there.

ambiture

I absolutely can't wait until you get to the later books. Numerous questions that you've asked throughout these reactions are answered in great detail through the books. I can only imagine how many epiphany moments you're bound to have as you progress through them. It's taken a lot of willpower to not just blurt out answers to your questions so that you can properly experience the mind-melts that I had when I first read the series after watching the movies. You've easily been the best reactor to watch this series imo. You showed it the most love, and the fan base appreciates that, I can tell you.
