A lot of the people here are confused that the trials were so easy to solve for any intruder but dumbledore purposely did that because the stone was actually protected from bad guys by the mirror of erised. “Ah, now, I’m glad you asked me that. It was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that’s saying something. You see, only one who wanted to find the Stone — find it, but not use it — would be able to get it, otherwise they’d just see themselves making gold or drinking Elixir of Life. My brain surprises even me sometimes... -Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.” -Chapter 17-The Man With Two Faces. The trials were for Ron Harry and hermione and I guess Neville. This is to test/train them I presume. As we know jk Rowling is a savage.

I‘m so incredibly late to this it‘s ridiculous but I just needed to say this (since I only just found out about the book club this week) My issue with the whole idea of Dumbledore’s been orchestrating all if this the entire time is the following: He as the headmaster of a massive school is responsible for the lives of hundreds of children that are only just learning to defend themselves and first years are away from their parents for this amount of time for the first time in their lives presumably. Now if he knew about Quirrel or even just learned about it during the course of the school year, how can he let him stay at the school? It would be the most irresponsible thing a headmaster can do. Yeah why not risk every child‘s life as long as I give Harry some vague hints it‘ll turn out fine? It doesn’t make sense to me. In my opinion either Dumbledore didn’t know or couldn’t be sure but in that case wouldn’t be orchestrating any of this. Or he did know however much he knew and was completely irresponsible and should not be able to continue being in charge of the lives of hundreds of innocent lives. Being known as the only wizard Voldemort fears but then deciding that you‘ll let an eleven year old handle it would be a horrible choice for him to have made. And I don’t understand why Harry accepted the possibility of it so happily

Garry (Not Jerry)

Yaaas! So excited! Edit: my thoughts on Hermione/Harry being different in the books. Watching the films after reading the books, it never really occurred to me that Hermione was much different in the films. But after seeing your reactions, and in particular your surprise to learn that Hermione has muggle parents, I realised that it must be very different from a movie-watchers perspective. Book-readers know that Ron is sort of like Harry’s window into the wizarding world, as he has grown up there, and a lot of the time in the movies, these kinds of expositions are given to Hermione instead. A lot of the time when Hermione appears to have knowledge of the wizarding world, book-readers will just assume that she read it in some book, but that’s not necessarily the case for movie-watchers. Harry in the first few chapters at Hogwarts is very interesting. He’s quite arrogant, willing to break the rules, get into fights, remind you of someone? It’s really his friendship with Hermione that softens his ego and prevents him and Ron from becoming the next James and Sirius. Edit 2: removed spoilers

Violetpup

Woohooo!!! Love your reviews. I am dyslexic too. Putting yourself out there is amazing and so brave.

LunaTheTrip

Yes!! By the way, is there any timeframe on the next LOTR? As in like, the next week, two weeks, etc.?

Lady Beyond The Wall

Excellent! I listen to these in 1.5 to 1.75x speed, so I might have finished quickly. But loved your thoughts about the end and loved your answers to the questions people put forth at the end. I definitely agree about Harry being more relatable and actually acting more like an 11 year old, as well as Hermione being more relatable and not absolutely perfect. Sometimes she forgets things in a panic and that's okay! She's 11! And I agree that I do wish they'd had the potions part, but it wouldn't have been as "exciting", so it was nice she had a moment to shine at the end with the devil's snare in the movie. That never really bothered me, because I do view the books and the movies as two separate entities. So I'm never really "annoyed" or "upset" if something is left out. Something is always going to be left out. Only way they could ever add more is if it was ever a TV series or something. Oh - and looking forward to the next book! I didn't really read or listen to the chapters first this time, as I think the first book is the one I remember the most, because I've read it the most (from times I've wanted to re-read the whole series again, started and finished the first book and then got distracted by something else, lol) but I'm going to do it from now on and maybe ask some questions for Question Time. :)

VeggieGamer

Hi Luna! If exporting goes well tonight, hopefully tomorrow! :) The full length extended reaction that is!

LunaTheTrip

Great! I’m looking forward to it.

Davith (he they)

In the movie, Hagrid says 'play him a bit of music and he (Fluffy) falls straight asleep!'

Matthew Whelan

The problem with ghost students is they wouldn't be able to pick up a wand, they also never age and never be able to gain employment afterwards so why would they want to learn theory they could never apply. Also the rules for being a ghost at Hogwarts are explained in book 5 and I'm reluctant to spoil them

Melanie P

I also view the movies and books as separate entities. It’s the only way to not get super irritated. The HBP movie left out so many memories that DH1 had to be basically rewritten. I prefer the book versions in these cases. Books 1&2 are the two i have read the least. Not sure why. I love having the ability to read along with someone else.

Erin Ragsdale

I may have missed it if someone has mentioned it already. My favorite part of the first books is the fact that in Chapter 12, Fred and George get in trouble for throwing snowballs at the back of Quirrell’s head. Which means that Fred and George bewitched snowballs to hit Voldemort’s face. Can you imagine?!

Maria

This was perfect timing! Had a long day and JUST put my feet up when I got the notification on email! I’ve never thought about how professor binns would get paid - maybe he still hasn’t noticed he’s dead and just goes about his business haha. I also understand the change with the devil’s snare in the film, because they cut Hermione’s potion scene. I honestly think it was an alright choice, but it is annoying that it becomes a trend to give Ron’s good moments to Hermione further down the line as well! I’m glad you’re taking a liking to the book version of Harry, I agree he’s more interesting this way. Sassy Harry is such a fun part of the books, which definitely isn’t really present in the movies. But, as others have mentioned, I too view the books and movies as practically separate stories, so I’m not overly fuzzed about changes that end up working on the screen! You’ll see just how much they diverge as you get further along. :) Great discussion as always!!

Liona N

If my memory serves me correctly the bloody baron and the ghost of Ravenclaw ( I forget her name) did not die at Hogwarts, you will find out more about that in deathly hallows. So I don’t think you have to die there in order to haunt the school.

Thunderbird

You mentioned Harry being more petty in the books and therefore more relatable. I prefer to think that Harry is just very sassy and quick-witted. Look out for the sass in the other books. It just gets better and better, you will not be disappointed! xD Also I just wanted to say that I love your reactions/reviews and it shows a lot of investment that you are going through the books chapter by chapter. That and the fact you worry constantly about everyone make you a true Hufflepuff 😊 Looking forward for book 2!

itsanursething

I'm currently only like 20 minutes into the video, but I thought I would share these to maybe help clear up some confusion. These are posts that JK Rowling herself wrote about Peeves and ghosts after all of the books had come out. These are NOT spoilers! Peeves: https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/peeves Ghosts: https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ghosts The post doesn't specifically say, but I feel like later in the books it's discussed a little that you don't have to die at Hogwarts to be a ghost there. I think a lot of ghosts choose to live at Hogwarts because there are other ghosts and so they have peers to interact with. Also, we will meet the Bloody Baron in future books. That's all I will say about that. In defense of Dumbledore, and I'll preface this by saying I haven't thought about it until right now, maybe it wasn't meant to make Slytherin feel bad or to put on a show. It was several days between the event with Quirrell and the feast, so maybe Dumbledore was dealing with the aftermath and didn't have a chance to award the points until then. Or maybe he was discussing with the other teachers what the reward should be for the trio for their bravery and good deeds, and they decided just before the house cup announcement. I don't know...just some thoughts...

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I have to say that the only things that really bothered me about the adaptations were the left out memories in HBP (I loved them in the books and, as already mentioned, they had to change quite a lot in DH1 and 2 to acount for this) and Harrys final confrontation with Voldemort. But generally speaking, I think that the movies are overall really quite good and even some of the best book adaptations I've seen🤔🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Your point about Neville falling on his face was really good, I never though about it. You're right that it is the same spell (Petrificus Totalus) that Draco uses in HBP on Harry. So based on that I'd agree that Neville's nose should probably be broken after that fall🤔😅 My explanation as to why this isn't the case: Rowling is also only a human and just didn't think about this scene, when writting the one in HBP 😂 To your question about Voldemort always being on the back of Quirrell's head: Yes, in the movies it is played as if he'd been there the whole time. I persoally think that's a good choice for the movie (as it saves time by not having to explain this at the end of the movie) and it atually leads to a pretty nice detail: When Harry wants to shake Quirrell's hand in the leaking cauldron, Quirrell just draws it away akwardly as he can't touch Harry without getting burned. (Though it's probably just part of the akward persona he's putting up, as he still seems to be surprised when Harry burns him at the end of the movie).

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I'm generally also not bothered too much by the character changes the movies made....you often just can't properly portray such nuanced charaters within a movie🤔 For instance, I also don't mind Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore as I think his more serious and less whimsical manner just fits better in the overall very dark tone of the later movies🤔🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

@Lady I also didn't read along with the book. But I'm planning on listenig to the audiobooks going forward to have them more freshly in my head for the book club posts🤔😊

Ashley Wall

If you love book Hermione, I can’t WAIT for you to meet book Ginny. By far my favorite character.

Shannon Elizabeth

Another amazing review! So excited to have finished the first book and can’t wait to start Chamber of Secrets :) I agree that Hermione is definitely better in the books..or rather she’s more real in the books, same as Harry. They definitely seem more like typical 11 year olds in the books. I seriously love Neville! He is everything good and pure in the world and is my favorite character followed closely by Fred and George. Can’t wait for you to get to meet the Weasleys more fully in the next book :) 💛🦡💛

Kunzite Blossom

I actually think Dumbledore gave the points during the feast makes sense because they don't usually announce when points are added/given so if one night Slytherin is in the lead and the next morning its Gryffindor in the lead with no explanation would probably cause Slytherins to get mad. So Dumbledore did it in a way he could explain the sudden increase of points. Again, I will suggest once your done with the books please watch "Dumbledore's Plan" from the super carlin brothers on your free time. It is so worth it.

Jacob sparks

No you don't have to have died at hogwarts to be a ghost at hogwarts. In shirt they free to travel where they like and hogwarts is just a good safe place for them

ari

yes !!! harry in prisoner of azkaban movie is so much like his book counterpart in terms of his sass !! i love dan's performance in that film the most, followed by order of the phoenix movie :))

Katie

One of my favourite quotes in the entire series is said by Dumbledore to Harry in chapter 17; 'After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.' It's a shame they didn't include this in the movie. I think Dumbledore was starting to prepare Harry even back then for the journey that would eventually lead him to sacrifice himself. I think Dumbledore was trying to show Harry that there are worse things than death and that death is not the end.

Dave brown

Sliverin were only winning because of snape unfairly handing out points to sliverins and taking them away from the other houses

Dave brown

I think people should be unpleasant sometimes particularly the bad people i cant stand how soft people are.

Garry (Not Jerry)

YES! Although not until like book 4 or 5 does she become the coolest person ever.

Schloodie

Hey really enjoyable as always. I am kind of sad you didn't finish my comment. While I totally understand not wanting to risk spoilers, I didn't write anything that wasn't the same in the movies. I would never risk spoiling someone even in small ways, but of course you couldn't know that, so I do understand.

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I really understand that your sad about it, especially since I agree that your comment was not spoilery. But on the other hand I really like that he's so carefull about spoilers because it can happen so fast that you get spoiled and somtimes people don't even realize that they're kinda spoiling something🤔.

Schloodie

Yeah it really is a better safe than sorry situation. It's honestly ridiculous what some people comment under reaction videos. Like don't you want people to be surprised?!

Lady Beyond The Wall

Yeah I getcha, but like you said, better safe than sorry! And since he does make it very cheap to comment on this kind of thing, I wouldn't put it past someone, somewhere trying to spoil something at some point just for the lols. Some people are like that. Though I can't understand why.

Insanityandbeyond

i think overview comments , even if not spoilers, kinda make it extra complicated, everyone will start doing them because theres so much you can link together - its much simpler to start the journey one at a time and only reference past events, even if spoiler free

Insanityandbeyond

this is really interesting but quite spoilery imo - the movies really dont show us as much insight into the marauders that youre casually referencing, that deeper insight comes from the books he hasnt got to yet

Insanityandbeyond

Really loving these book reviews, my favourite things on the internet right now! cant wait for the second book, I missed reading along to the first but may just start with the second :)

Garry (Not Jerry)

You’re totally right, I hadn’t considered that. I have removed those bits

Schloodie

Usually I would agree, but since he does know the overall story having seen the movies, I personally would say linking some broad stuff together is fine. I mean he puts a lot of that stuff together himself just from his own knowledge. But to each there own I guess.

Melanie P

I love these book clubs! The only thing I would say is that Hagrid doesn’t necessarily struggle to take responsibility for his actions, it’s more that he doesn’t consider how dangerous some things are to normal wizards. Hahrid is part giant. Giants are even more resistant to normal spells that take wizards down. So he doesn’t think about the danger to others because he hasn’t had to consider it for himself. He knows he could handle whatever it is but it doesn’t occur to him that others can’t. Even in chamber, he doesn’t think harry and ron are going to be in trouble with the spiders because he is great friends with aragog.. but aragog’s descendants aren’t quite as loyal as aragog. Again, I love these reviews. I cannot wait until you get to the later books.. POA is where some more major changes happen/bigger stuff is left out. I cannot wait to see what you think about those books.

Annette Elliott

I think part of the reason for awarding the final points the way he did was Dumbledore teaching a lesson to Slytherin students, especially Draco, but Snape as well. Cheaters never prosper, deliberately trying to get someone in trouble isn't cool and a teacher shouldn't unfairly distribute points.

Alex

Awesome review, as always! I think I read somewhere that they were afraid that Voldemort would be too scary for children if they did make him have red eyes, so they decided not to alter the actors' eye color. Probably a good choice given that these movies (at least the first few) were mainly targeted to children, and I don't know about anyone else, but Voldemort was scary enough for me when I was little XD

Benjamin Hütz

Dumbledore didnt know at this point that harry was a horcrux

Lovegood

I think almost all the book characters I prefer over the movie ones. The movie characters are good. But some of the book characters are really brilliant and some of my all time favorite book characters, because when they are good people, they also usually have flaws. Some characters just get more dept and exposure in the books (like Neville and some of my favorites still coming up) and some really just are different characters (I love sassy Harry, book Hermione is one of my favorites as well). I was wondering if you will do a tier list of the book characters? As a Gryffindor it bothered me as well how they did the points at the last minute, he should’ve given them before the feast at least. I love that Neville got the final points though. Not defending but I think part of it may also have been that Gryffindor was in the lead before they lost a massive amount of points for being out at night (which, I can’t imagine that more students aren’t, and I doubt they get 50 points redacted each every time, but maybe) and that Harry, Hermione and Neville were treated very badly by Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff because of it. The fact that they all got those points back I hope got at least those students and think about their behavior.

Clarissa

Yay, love your reviews Veggie, had day case surgery on Thursday but was in overnight due to low blood pressure so only just had a chance to catch up on this. Can't wait for you to react to book 2!

Katie

Potential spoilers for Veggie because I can't remember how much detail is in the movies............... I think Dumbledore might have suspected Harry was a horcrux from the night Harry was attacked by Voldemort but didn't have this confirmed until the end of book 2. In chapter 1 of book 1 when McGonagall asks Dumbledore if his scar can be removed Dumbledore replies “Even if I could, I wouldn't. Scars can come in handy." And at this point Dumbledore has heard the prophesy so he knows that neither can live while the other survives. So even if he doesn't know about the horcruxes he knows that Harry will probably have to die in order to destroy Voldemort.

H

Still love your reviews, Veggie! And lovely that it's so long! :D Completely agree about how the scene where Hagrid was crying was really sweet! I wish that was included in the movie. I do disagree with you about that being untypical Hagrid, but you'll probably see more of that side of him in later books. Really agree with you about how Harry is a much more interesting character in the book. Not just because of him not being as perfect, but also because his mind is sometimes quite silly (in a good way).

BeckyB00b

Aw man, you’re going to slowly stop defending the movies. From Azkaban onwards, the movies miss so much. Like you, I was a fan of the movies first and then listened to the audiobooks. We’re the lucky ones, because we were given the chance to experience the magic and fall in love with the movies as there was nothing to compare it to. I would’ve hated going from the books to the movies! I’m BEYOND excited to see you fall in love with this story in a whole new way. Stay fabulous ⚡️

Hufflepuff Discovery

So wonderful to hear all of your thoughts! I love that you pointed out that there are 7 chambers involved in protecting the stone. 7 is a number that shows up so often in Harry Potter, and magically it is a powerful number (hence why Voldemort wanted to split his soul into 7 pieces, to make him even more invincible. Of course he accidentally splits into 8 pieces, which weakens his power). Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Excited for you to get into the next one!

Maria

I think he stopped because you said "at the end of the book" or something, as opposed to "at the end of the movie", or prefaced it with reassuring there's no spoiler. Saying it's at the end of a book he hasn't read leaves room for thinking there could've been details he doesn't know yet. He's just trying to stay 100% clear of spoilers. :)

Schloodie

Yeah in hindeside I understand that. When I wrote it it just didn't occur to me because the books and the movies just aren't that drastically different. But he also doesn't know that yet, so... Hindeside is 20/20 I guess.

Davith (he they)

I think you might be interested in this video:

Davith (he they)

(sorry that sent as two messages) but it has all the differences between the first book and first film :)

emmainkeri

This is correct. Most ghosts at Hogwarts didn't die there (none of the House ghosts did for example). Myrtle is one of the few, and even she hasn't always stayed at the castle. But she came back.

Dara Jeeling

ehm.... no! Gryffindor came in last, because of the point loss frm MC Gonagall - who took 150 points from her own house for them being out after curfew. Yes, Snape takes away points unfairly and rewards towards Slytherin more then the other houses (the other heads seem to hand out points more fairly) BUT the fact that Gryffindor is on the last place is because of the 150 points loss - not (just) because of Snape. If you think so, reread, please! Yes Harry won the 150 points during quidditch - but then they were lost. Snape (in the first book) only takes a few points from Gryffindor (yes, unfairly) and he also takes points from other houses. BUT the Slytherins also win points from other teachers - Snape is NOT the only one rewarding the house. as said, what put the Gryffindors in the last place was the fact, that Harry/Ron are stupid enough to go out after Curfew to make sure Norbert(a) is send of and then leave the invisible cloak and get caught by Mc Gonagall (an get punished accordingly) And yes, Snape is mean and unfair.

Dara Jeeling

okay, so Harry/Ron/Nveille being out after curfew is okay? That is actually the resone Gryffindor lst the 150 points and came in last (and Mc Gonagall tokk those away). Harry and Ron were a unfair to Malfoy as he was towoards them - making sure he got cought as well. I understand, why (for the kids sake) the points had to be rewarded back - I am NOT happy with it and have never been - since... What does this signal to the Slytherins who worked hard on earning their points (as well as Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff) and then like * poof * all your effort was worthless - since Dumbledore turns the tale upside down. I feel, Dumbledore also awards points unfairly (in a very high amount) - I am totally with him with Nevilles points (10) but I am sort of... not as happy for the 160 the trio gets. I would have always found it more fair to make both houses win I mean Slytherin is not just Draco (and Snape) but more people. but then "the bad" haveto come in last ... or what... Since that's so realistic... And yes I understand the lesson kids should learn from the book, doesnt't mean I have to like it , because that's not was happes in RL

Dara Jeeling

I can't wait for the second book and the other ones - I am still especially interested in how you see Snape once he gets really nasty (and he will) believe me! as always thank you! Sorry for the delay - RL was really not much fun.

VeggieGamer

Hi Dara! I always really appreciate your comments and opinions! I am sorry RL is rough at the moment and love hearing your thoughts on these movies / stories. I hope things get better soon!!

Q

Hi Veggie! Loving these reactions and so excited to get into the rest of them! Pretty much every single character is better in the book than in the movie (at least in my opinion but also I think from a technical, writing perspective), and there's so much more explanation in the books as well.

Ian Graham

I really do think that your way of reviewing the chapters and doing the book club makes up for you not showing your initial reactions to listening to the audiobooks themselves. As great as that would be, I think your way of doing things at this point is very good on it's own. Although I still think that showing clips of your initial reaction to things would still be a good inclusion!

Raider Max

Veggie you are awesome! That is all

Loveinthehat

Yeah people tend to be shocked with Harry’s sassiness that he has in prisoner of Azkaban when they watch the movies and think it’s because of puberty, but Harry is so petty and sassy in the books from the beginning (and you haven’t seen anything yet lol) but I love it. Makes him more realistic as you said. I also like how Hermione tends to have more flaws? It’s more of an issue in the later movies but they tried to make her more of a powerful, perfect person who’s a strong female and even tho it’s a cool idea, taking away her flaws and quirks actually doesn’t do what they think it does. She’s still badass with imperfections and I wonder if you’ll notice in the other books but they gave some of Ron’s moments to her. I love Ron’s character tbh, of course he’s still more of a comedic character but in the movies he feels a bit like a Neville character sometimes, whereas in the books he’s more witty and sarcastic and is way more forward. Like I can’t imagine movie Ron full on jumping draco in the quidditch stands but Ron in the books is more street smart and he’s not as stupid is the movies make him out to be, he knows more of the wizarding world than Harry and Hermione and he’s on the same level as Harry for all their subjects. I know you haven’t gotten to them yet but I think the movies, especially the later ones ruin Harry and Ron’s friendship because the screenwriters loved Hermione so much whereas you can see their friendship way more in the books.

S1lm4r1l

We do not ever hear the Bloody Baron speak. However, we are told in passing that he does speak, (seem to recall Nearly Headless Nick talking about how he complains and clangs his way up and down the Astronomy Tower.) As for why Peeves shows the Bloody Baron more respect than he does others. You'll have to wait for a later book. Slow burn.

S1lm4r1l

As regards the difficulty and challenge of the puzzles. They are not designed to be immovable barriers, but simply to be time-consuming obstacles. Each of the staff members comes up with different solutions. Devil's Snare. A plant that binds you. Keys that require one to chase them around the room. A transfiguration puzzle forcing you to play games of chess until you win. The potions puzzle, requiring thought and logic and finally the Mirror. The exception is Fluffy, which might be because Dumbledore wants a warning of some sort to alert the castle. Someone battling a giant dog would cause a great deal of noise.

Ghost

Not sure if you saw it veggie. and yes I realise I'm late to the party. But do you remember the bit in the book where is says the twins bewitched a couple of snow balls to bounce off the back of Quirells turban?...well that means they were bouncing snow balls of Voldemorts face... right?
