Yep, I was not expecting this when I started watching the series. It felt like a movie that was gut-wrenching in every scene, not a 42 minute animation! "I only wanted to help" hits so hard. We know Powder just wants to be useful and is always getting told she's a "Jinx", and she adores her sister, who keeps her grounded, as she has severe mental issues and delusions. The tragedy of this, is it almost could have worked, Mylo, Claggor, Vander and Vi were out; the explosions just happened at the wrong time. And now she unwittingly has killed three of her family, and with Vi rejecting her through anger, she has nowhere to go, nothing to help her mentally and so she goes to Silco, who sees himself in her, the outsider. I was angry with Vi but I understood why she acted like that, she told her sister to stay away, and now three of them are killed, including her father figure in Vander. She sees quickly that she acted rashly, but not quick enough, and is taken away by Marcus. Now both sisters are parted from each other and will go down some dark paths, and the Lanes will also regress further into barbarism with no one there to keep the peace. A horrifying, but tremendous episode. In fact, its a masterpiece.

Think how you would react in Vi's situation though. As Sofia said, she lashed out because of what she had just been though. Had she had time to calm down before confronting the fact that Powder did what she did, I don't think she would have reacted as harshly.

It's usually after watching episode 3 that most people realise that Arcane isn't a happy show but a tragedy

PaulaC

Sorry, this is not as helpful as you think it is. I'm over here spitting things that my puppies don't like AT ALL.

Clotilde

Don’t be too harsh on Vi. She is also still a child, and she is as traumatized as Powder…. She just lost everything and saw her “Father” die in front of her. It is normal to lash out and get angry. She walked away from Powder because she needed a break from everything that just happened and didn’t want to make it worse.

VeggieGamer

Thank you, Clotilde, this is a comment I needed. That is exactly why I asked "What were your opinions when first watching this", as I was almost shaking how bad I felt for Powder. It maybe because I am the youngst in my family but found that ending terrifying. I can't wait to hear more of Vi's standpoint and I know my rage at the time was not giving her a fair go of it!

verdantdruid

Thanks so much for going through it for our entertainment.

Brilliant comment, Clare! This was my honest first hand impression in the moment, and frankly even as I was commentating I was sure I was viewing it from a bias angle. I still feel even worse for Powder though! I look forward to hearing more from both of them about this moment. Truly heartbreaking!

Diego Zenhäusern

I mean, while I personally didn't blame Vi for her actions the first time watching it, I don't think you need to appologize for or feel bad about what you said! It was your honest first reaction and that's what we're here for :)! Edit: I also feel like it's a sign of how good the writing for this show is, that you can totally feel for both of them and that it is valid to be totally on either of their sides in this moment!🤔🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Also: The first time watching it I was actually impressed with Vi's self-restraint. I totally expected her to right out say to Powder's face that they were no sisters anymore and just leave her there🙁

VeggieGamer

I really need to get his name down for the next reaction! Thanks for the help. he is a great character and can't wait to see where the series takes him next!

Rold

Keep up the amazing content! Love the amount of discussion going on and I'm jealous of your personality haha

Vi and Powder, 2 kids lost their family again...

Krisztian

I freaking love Powder but I understood Vi. Especially when she hit her while saying "I told you to stay away". Of course leaving her alone even for a short time wasn't her best move, but it makes the whole scene all more human. I loved your reaction, thanks for it!

Kega

this would probably be the 5th time ive watched through this show, this episode still makes me cry every time. i get so legitimately angry when i see Vi hit powder. and the first time watching the first scene of powder crying alone i had to look away, it was too uncomfortable and real. this show inspired me so much

Luckless

I can't remember the exact video but there is a video on YouTube by a (supposed, because internet) psychiatrist who analysed Arcane character by character and pointed out in their video about Vi that for Vi's personality that this was Vi grieving the only way Vi knew how while Powder calling out for her was due to Powder needing someone for her own grief. Very interesting and informative, but allows you to see the tragedy of Arcane a lot easier at certain points (or at least understand them easier if you don't)

Luckless

Managed to find it about 5 minutes later and, turns out it was a therapist's reaction, not psychiatrist (Veggie don't watch until after episode 9 if you're going to (same for anyone else who read this comment, 10:11 is the absolute limit if you want to avoid spoilers before episode 4/5) but the link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azilZLs_2j4)

Jennifer Tremblay

Yup! This has always been the way I've interpreted this scene. Vi just needed to cool off. She was in pain, but she wasn't going to abandon Powder. :) Edit: I guess I get Vi more than Power, I do have a younger sibling, but also someone in another comment mentioned Vi was dealing with grief the only way she knew how. I do the same thing when I'm grieving, I separate myself from loved ones and I can get very irritable.

Diego Zenhäusern

Oh yeah, I've seen those videos too! They're really cool and made me appreciate the show way more :)

Silco is a masterpiece of a character

Sofia

I have a hard time relating to people that blame Vi after this episode. Vi tried her best to save her family when she was already going through hell. She told Powder to stay home to keep her safe, but Powder didn't listen. They found Vander and were about to get out (not unscathed, but out) when Powder used her bomb and killed everyone. Vi had to witness her entire family die after fighting for her life, and then she learns her sister was directly responsible for all their deaths. Vi is a child, and she was grieving after all that. She got angry, immediately felt bad about it and moved away to calm down, but got captured. She did not abandon Powder, she was just trying to process thought the pain. But Powder (because she is also a child) didn't understand and blamed Vi for "abandoning" her.

The Ginger Historian

I don't blame Vi for "abandoning" Powder. I blame Vi for traumatizing her little sister. You are the older one - as Vander says, she trusts you. You are responsible for her. You don't talk to her like that. Ever. To claim otherwise is an insult to Vander's memory. "Mylo was right" alone as Powder is weeping and pleading with her... no. Unforgivable. Vi is a horrific sister.

The Ginger Historian

You are right. Vi should never have re-traumatized her little sister (not just emotionally, but physically abusing her as well). I understand that she was traumatized as well. But Vander himself is the one who tried to tell her that she was responsible for Powder no matter what. And she hasn't learned that lesson. You have EVERY right to be angry with Vi.

SpeedyBrandon95

it's amazing the connection to each featured character in just 3 episodes! I was reminded of GoT, in that any character could die unexpectantly. Brilliant episode & reaction Veggie :P
