Perfect. Going on holiday somewhere without Internet tonight, so now I'll just try to download this so I can enjoy it at our cabin. Personally I love that it's so long, as you probably have realised that most of us love that, that more than makes up for the long wait! :D

Diego Zenhäusern

Already looking forward to watching this when I come home later🙂

When I think of hand drills I think of a company that makes tools. Most don't just make drills as far as I know. Now for a manufacturing plant there could be auto drills, oil well drills, drills for water wells, etc.

Melanie P

I was always confused as to why Petunia didn’t know students couldn't use magic outside of school… presumably she lived with her sister during school breaks and would know that law.. the only reason I can see that she wouldn’t know this is if it’s 1) a newer law or 2) she distanced herself so much from lily that she didn’t know anything.

VeggieGamer

This is such a good point Melanie!! We know that her and Lilly didn't get one too great, so maybe Lilly did the same as Harry and just never told her / her parents!

Annamarie schwirian

I don't know about the new game but in the chamber of secrets play station game they actually have both the goul and the gnomes .

Maia

LOL Arthur smoked Lucius - and I loved watching every single second of this video :P

Annette Elliott

Oh yes degnoming is definitely in the PC abd PS2 HP games I used to play. The clock in the movie is also in the book.

Annamarie schwirian

Also Rudy and bloody are not terms used regularly in the USA

Yes it’s definitely only underage people who can’t do magic! It’s if you are under 17 I’m sure. Hagrid isn’t allowed to either but I’m sure he says in the first book he was given permission to use magic to get Harry or something so he was kind of using that to his advantage. Yeah the relationship in the books between Draco and Lucius is very different from the movies, there’s a lot of fans of Draco who always say that Lucius is abusive towards him but I think they got that feeling from the movies, because even though Lucius is a bad person he isn’t abusive to his son. The actor who played Lucius also said that he deliberately made Lucius to seem even meaner to Draco to show how bad he was or something. With the coincidence’s to me it’s more like it is a kids book and it’s just how it is to move the plot forward, but most stories kind of are coincidences to me because then things won’t happen. Draco talking about Harry doesn’t seem that strange because from Lucius’ reaction to it if I remember Harry has been talking about them, especially Harry constantly because he seems to be annoyed how he keeps talking about him and he shouldn’t be because everyone else doesn’t have that same opinion on Harry or something. Yeah the movies took out some of the characters flaws that really make them more realistic, you especially see it later on I won’t spoil anything but characters who were very good and perfect in the movies do have a lot of flaws and faults you’ll see in other books. Most games of chamber of secrets from what I’ve seen have the de-gnomimg part because I remember playing some before reading the books and behind confused because I thought they added it in randomly!

Melina W

i think it makes perfect sense that they'd talk about mallorca a lot bc it's a very popular vacation destination for british people and with how average of a family the dursleys are trying to be of they'd choose such an average travel destination

S1lm4r1l

I assume Lily was a goodie two shoes and simply never thought to mention it because of course she'd never use Magic outside school. Of course, Petunia may simply not bother to remind Harry in the hopes he does use Magic and gets expelled. It may be one of those things Petunia has forgotten about the wizarding world. She is so determined to do so.

Arthur smoked Lucius - Ginny has a much smaller part in the movies than in the books, she actually is a character with a personality in the books.

Loveinthehat

The Hermione also fixing his glasses bit was a nice change for the movie I guess, but it wouldn’t make sense here because underage wizards can’t use magic outside of school and the book at this point have made that clear, so Hermione fixing his glasses like that wouldn’t be something she’d risk.

Raider Max

Arthur smokes Lucious. I'm going to elaborate on why Molly is a top 5 character for me while not giving specific examples of the future books. From the start she looks out for Harry before she even knows who he is and gives him a Christmas present when she realizes he wouldn't be getting much. She knows he has never known a mother's love gives him exactly what he needs emotionally. This hit me hard reading the books because while I seen every movie when it came out growing up, I didn't read the books until last summer when I am now a father of 3. Should something happen to me and their mother I hope and pray someone like Molly looks after my children. Her love for Harry with absolutely no intention of ANYTHING in return is why she is in the top 5 characters for me.

Being UK based Stephen Fry got to know JK Rowling quite well which I doubt Jim Dale did. At one point in one early book he was struggling to say a sentence as written so he rang her and asked if he could amend it slightly for the recording. JK thought about it and told him NO. Then included the same sentence in each of the books she wrote to finish the series!

Jacqueline Chaiton

Also Harry's birthday, when he leaves the Dursleys, is July 31 and then he stays with the Weasley's until September 1 so yes he's there for about a month.

Benjamin Hütz

About the japanese golfer joke: As far as im aware of there is no official source for what exactly the joke was... what you read was probably one of many fan-made jokes... the vast majority of them are very nasty (typical internet-teenager-fashion)

Matthew Whelan

you talking about wizards maybe not being able to go insane is so sad it made me cry and you won't even know why until you get to book 5

S1lm4r1l

I've read these books dozens of times. And I've never picked up on the whole "Masons - Masonry thing." I've always had the assumption that the drills were industrial, things like pile-drivers etc. for breaking up concrete. But I guess it could be hand-drills

Diego Zenhäusern

I always totally assumed that Vernon was making hand drills. But I have to admit, that industril drills would make way more sense xD!!

Diego Zenhäusern

SPOILERS I mean technically the ministry wouldn't know she did it (and probably wouldn't even look into it) since there are a lot of adult wizards doing magic around her so the Trace would go off constantly. But I'd agree with you that Book-Hermione wouldn't use magic here just out of principle😅

Loveinthehat

Yeah that’s what I mean, the fact that that’s a rule book Hermione wouldn’t do it in the first place because it’s still risky anyway

Diego Zenhäusern

The phrase he was struggling with was "pocketed it" ^^

Diego Zenhäusern

Funny for me it was always the other way around where I always imagined him producing hand drills😅 Though I have to say that industrial drills probably make more sense if you think a little longer about it🙈😂

Diego Zenhäusern

First off: Arthur smoked Lucius ^^ To the intro: I think you recording the reactions one chapter at a time makes sense, especially if it would make things easier for you (since there isn't really a downside for us as you mentioned in the video)😊 To the reaction: I really think you're onto something with Hagrid having some mild prejudices against Muggles. I think this is another instance, where Rowling allows our "good guys" to be flawed and complex (just like with Harry being more petty/ sassy about Draco in the books). I personally really like this as it goes to show tha even "good" people can - intentionally or unintentionally - have prejudices. And so the thing that makes you "good" or "bad" isn't wether you do or do not have them, but how you react if they're pointed out to you and whether you're prepared to challenge your prejudices and be educated on them.

Diego Zenhäusern

Uff, you're right...I didn't even really consider that one😮 Also: I never took the mad in "Martin Miggs the Mad Muggle" to mean that he's insane🤔 I just assumed that it is about the fact that Wizards don't understand how/why Muggles are doing things and so Martin is just doing normal everyday stuff and the wizards think he's "mad" because they don't get why he's doing it😂😂

Elizabeth Mann

Arthur smoked Lucius. :) Harry's 12 in this book. 1 = 11, 2 = 12 etc. We do see Arthur talking to the Grangers in the bookshop momentarily and Ginny does stand up to Draco, just in fewer words. Also, gnomes do appear in the first two Potter games. Do you think you might do a Let's Play? I would join a live stream for that.

Sofia

About the scene in nocturne alley. I'm not sure if this is the case. But it appears that you took that line from Ron in the first movie/book "There isn't wizard that went bad that wasn't from Slytherin" way too literally. Ron was wrong when he said that, he was spewing his own prejudice against Slytherin at that time. Slytherin is not the evil house, and they are not necessarily connected to the dark arts. Also, many of the villains we encounter in the story are from other houses, like Quirrell, who was a Ravenclaw.

ari

literally !! a lot of people who react to the first film immediately associate slytherin with being the evil house which is so dumb. it's a bit ironic how jk rowling wrote snape to be such a complex, layered character with so many nuances but she didn't do that for other slytherin characters. wasn't the whole point of this series that people aren't split into good or bad, that everyone has both light and dark inside of them ?? yes i'm quoting sirius from order but it's so powerful tbh

Diego Zenhäusern

First off: I completely agree with your points in theory and I really think that real life people that identify as Slytherin don't have to be bad peole at all!!! As ambition and a bit of cunning itself aren't bad but only what you make with them can be bad (and as people can't be reduced on only one or two personality traits in any case)🤔 But in the context of the books Rowling really portrayed Slytherin as the evil house (Without being to spoilery there are basically a handful Slytherins in the entire books that end up somewhat decent and Rowling would have had a perfect moment in book 7 to redeem some of the Slytherins but chose to make them all sraight up evil instead🙁). Don't get me wrong: As I said, I agree with your point that it shouldn't be this way in the books and wouldn't be that way in real life. But it kinda is the way Rowling wrote it...which is really disappointing in its own right and probably one of many small details in an otherwise great series that already let her true colours shine through🤔😕

itsanursething

As always, I have a million thoughts...First though: Arthur ABSOLUTELY smoked Lucius! And what makes it even better is he did it 'muggle style,' which is even more of an insult to Lucius because muggles and anything they do is sooo beneath him in his mind. Speaking of muggles, I think 'Martin Miggs the Mad Muggle' has more to do with the fact that wizarding folk think muggles are just bizarre. They don't understand their inventions or how they work or why they do a lot of things, so to wizards it may seem a bit nuts. Martin may just be a regular guy, but to wizards he's mad. Not everyone has an owl. Poor Errol is so old, which is why he struggles so hard. He's the Weasley family owl, hence Ron using him to write to Hermione. Speaking of the Weasleys, Ginny is AMAZING in the books! She's so bland in the movies, which is really disappointing. Draco is a spoiled brat in the books. He thinks that because his family has money and he has been raised without want, that he can have whatever he wants whenever he wants (kind of like his father). He's also been taught/shown in how he was raised that he's better than other people 1) because he has money, but also 2) because he's a pureblood (it's not in the books but there is something called the Sacred 28 that the Malfoy family is on. It's basically a list of the 28 most "pure" wizarding family bloodlines. I wouldn't look up more about it until you've finished the books.) That being said, at the same time, Draco knows his father is THE boss in his family. We see more of why a bit later on.

itsanursething

I can see both points. I love that you mentioned the reason Ron said that was because of his own prejudices. I think that's spot on! I also think the reason more dark wizards are sorted into Slytherin has a lot to do with Salazar Slytherin himself. The sorting hat was basically made from the minds of the founders, so Salazar Slytherin's prejudices were inherently a part of his house "requirements" I guess you could say. Obviously, it's not true of ALL Slytherin's but it is a major component. So, yes in a way Rowling wrote it as an "evil" house, but Salazar Slytherin could be considered an "evil" character, so it makes sense.

S1lm4r1l

You're right to pick up on Hagrid's attitude towards Muggles. The way most wizards, even ones that really like them are fairly dismissive of them. Even Arthur is quite paternalistic in some regards, viewing their contributions as simply the means by which they get along without Magic, rather than inventions and innovations in their own right. For instance, I do not think Wizards would view planes as a sincere alternative to brooms, but simply a poor imitation. Given the choice, they assume that everyone would choose brooms. Which is not necessarily the case.

Lovegood

I always thought that books like “… mad muggle” we’re more of a pureblood campaign against muggles, making them out as less worthy and that they’re all just mad. (Not saying that the Weasleys were those kind of wizards, because they weren’t, but those books probably became populair and it wasn’t as much an in your face campaign against them, even purebloods with the best intentions like the Weasley really just don’t understand muggles) About knockturn alley, I don’t know if it’s necessarily a place for only ‘bad’ people as much as it just isn’t a place where kids should go. I can imagine that it sells more dangerous, advanced potion ingredients for instance. And maybe has like a magical tattoo place or something.

Dara Jeeling

I really love how much you invest in this series *a big heart* - with most other reactors ( and I said MOST not all) you just get the feeling "I'll do Potter now, i has a steady fanbase" - so I really enjoy it that someone stays into the fandom and you get the feeling is really into it. I wish i coul watch that in one go - but yeah corona is back at work and hat means 2 hour shifts and I am to tired to do it in one go. (I knew things would spike again and this is thetime when I am not a fan of my job) It's still a delight to have someting to look forward to!

Dara Jeeling

also... favorite female character... McGonagall - but then I am a teachers fan. Also I really love Luna and Ginny (and obviously Hermione) My ultimate favorit has always been Snape though (and yes, even book Snape) because he was so diffrent from everyone else (and again very obviously biased). I can't wait until you get to see the nastier side of Snape. I am very biased to film Snape - since he was depicted by Alan Rickman XD

Thunderbird

Arthur smoked Lucius! 😊 Yes, Hagrid isn’t allowed to do magic either. Your theory about only students being «watched» comes very close to how the Ministry does it. But don’t worry, you will get more detail about how and why it is done this way in the later books. This then also explains why Harry has to live with the Dursleys. About the owls; not every wizard owns one. Errol is the family owl (since they don’t have a lot of money not all Weasleys have their own) and Hermione doesn’t own one either. There is an owlery in Hogwarts where lots of students can borrow a school owl to write to their families. Great review as always, looking forward to the next one. 😊

Loveinthehat

It’s funny because I noticed since people hate jk Rowling now they seem to nitpick and point out every flaw the good characters have and act like their the worst human beings she’s created possible… it’s so weird because the flaws these characters have are very normal and realistic as well and doesn’t make them bad people, it’s like they want the characters to be one dimensional but then get annoyed saying the characters are one dimensional. I get not liking her for actual issues with things she’s said, but the nitpicking is annoying

Loveinthehat

In the book I’m sure it was hagrid who said that about slytherin’s if I remember? But in the movies they made Ron say it. I mean you can’t blame people for taking that line seriously because that’s how jk Rowling paints slytherin’s 99% of the time and even the slytherin’s who are more complex are never really ‘good’ either tbh

Diego Zenhäusern

I totally agree with you!!! I really don't like how a lot of people are suddenly saying that Rowling is a bad writer/ the books are bad just because she outet herself as a bigot now!! I think you can definitely see some of her issues if you really look for it (like the thing with Slytherins never ACTUALLY being good) but overal the books are still great and vastly promote acceptance and understanding (even if Rowling herself doesn't seem able to stand up the standards she set in the book😕)

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I think film Snape let's you forget/ forgive a lot. Ultimately, I would say, he's a hero but not really a "good" person🤔😕

Katie

I grew up watching Button Moon and saw them on stage too! 😆 Great video as always!

VeggieGamer

Oh my goodness, there was a STAGE SHOW?? That is amazing!!

Katie

Yeah I was too young to remember much of it but I do remember enjoying it and I ate a sherbet lolly in the car afterwards 😂 🌕🎶 We're off to Button Moon, we'll follow Mr Spoon, Button Moon, Button Moon....🎶🌕

Triene

Hagrid isn’t allowed to do magic, but for different reasons. The ministry knows when Harry does magic because he is underage. Hagrid isn’t tracked the same way. Kinda like getting his license revoked, he’ll be okay if no one catches him doing it.

Triene

Btw this was so fun to watch. As Luna would say, “it’s like being with a friend” for a few hours chatting about stuff we love!

Hailey Jahn

Arthur smoked Lucius! And he totally would, because even the other Death Eaters knew that Lucius didn’t like getting his hands dirty. Thanks for another awesome book review, and I am totally on board for the 24 hour one for the end of Deathly Hallows lol!!

Kunzite Blossom

As the later books do get longer, especially the chapters. Some chapters are like an hour long. If you feel the need to do a chapter at a time go for it. It definitely takes time to listen to a bunch of chapters in a day. I started listening to the books again when you first started this and I've just finished them last night. That is with me listening on break at work, long travels, at night before i sleep. So it takes a while Also, most books when it comes to a series, the books always give refreshers to what happened in the previous books. I also think you're confused about how using magic works for students. Hagrid used magic because he doesn't have the Trace on him, even though because he never finished school he isn't supposed to use magic. Also, because kids can't control their magic, its up to the parents to keep their kids from using it, if you are muggleborn, its harder cause the parents wouldn't understand its magic. Once the child attends Hogwarts, if they use magic outside of school then the Ministry can interfere. So time...it's one thing the movies do so poorly. Harry usually leaves his house around his birthday which is the end of July then it seems like 2 days later he's off to Hogwarts, but the Hogwarts express doesn't leave till September 1st. So the movies do make time go by very fast. When it comes to the book club, the question about his birthday, when he was young there was no way Harry could take care of himself. They had to have cared for him and treated him well enough. Maybe they would have celebrated his birthday. In the first book its mentioned the Dursleys hadn't given him pocket money in years. Meaning at one point they did. Prehaps they hoped he would turn out normal if they raised him without magic. The moment he showed signs of magic....thats when the neglect came in. Plus the Dursleys want to appear normal. Would it not be strange if a person asked Harry when his birthday is and he didn't know? Plus in this book it says "The Dursley's hadn't even remembered that today happened to be Harry's twelfth birthday. Of course, his hopes hadn't been high; they'd never given him a real present, let alone a cake- but to ignore it completely..." which shows they do acknowledge it sometimes.

Katie

The first book also mentioned birthday presents he's previously got from the Dursley's like a coat hanger and one of Vernon's old socks
