Hi guys.... I swear, I try to be brief in these videos. XD

So this one is pushing 3 hours and we have a LOT to discuss!  Amazing additional scenes, surprising changes and possibly the first.. 'big' change the movies made that annoyed a lot of you book readers.  We break it all down and I give my thoughts.

Thanks to everyone that took part in the Book Club! Just a quick reminder, it is OK if someone has a differing opinion, so always be respectful to others.  I love to hear ALL of your thoughts on these. :)

Love you guys! Hope you have a great Sunday!

Oh!! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARRY!!

Perfect day! Happy Birthday Harry!

Katie

Hi Veggie. Thanks for saying that about differing opinions. The world would be a very boring place if we all felt the same way. Looking forward to your opinions as always 🙂

ari

i also thought rupert grint's delivery of 'the carrr? :0' was very odd as well, like he's never heard of one up until that point

Katie

The Burrow is supposed to be located in Devon so that's about a 4 hour drive to London without traffic according to Google maps. They would have had to set off really early. A bit of magic must have been involved to get them there in time. The enchanted ceiling in the Great Hall reflects the sky outside so in that chapter it would have been overcast in real life too. I love the enchanted ceiling because it looks like it's open air but you won't get rained on etc. I think that moment in the movie where Hermione says Ron is making it snow is because Ron is holding his wand. I love the subtle Ginny clue in chapter 7 that she's behind the attacks. Hagrid tells Harry that Ginny came to his house the day before 'Said she was jus' lookin' round the grounds, but I reckon she was hopin' she might run inter someone else at my house.' The real reason Ginny is at Hagrid's is to strangle one of his roosters as there's this description 'Givin' me advice on gettin' Kelpie's out of a well,' growled Hagrid, moving a half-plucked rooster off his scrubbed table'. If it was half-plucked it was likely killed recently, maybe even the day before when Ginny came to his house. Then that night (end of chapter 7) Harry hears the Basilisk for the first time because it is now safe for it to leave the chamber. It's a clever misdirect that you only notice for what it is on a reread

I feel sorry for Neville because his whole life he has been constantly compared to his parents, he doesn't have any confidence, it's not because he is stupid as you can tell from deathly Hallows movie he can be kick was.

Inseriousity

I love how you spotted the really subtle clue about Ginny hanging around the grounds but said "Ginny's diary" several times and didn't recognise it was that diary until a comment mentioned it. JK Rowling is very good at dropping these little clues in throughout her books

Dara Jeeling

I did never even consider that this might be a reference to Alan being the Sheriff of Nottingham... I said it before - almost all teachers were sort of "downplayed" in the films. I mean... Flitwick (Warwick Davies) in the films is sort of the choir conductor. You'll find out more baout him in the books. As well as Sprout and hell, even McGonagall. as always, stay safe and look afte yourself! Health is always more important.

Hawwah

Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY, J. K. ROWLING!

Hawwah

I like Neville but he is objectively a bad student. That of course doesn't change the fact that he is brave and his heart is at the right place.

Katie

Yes, Happy birthday J K Rowling! Thanks to her we are here enjoying and talking about these wonderful books! 🙂

sarah4hp

Another amazing walk-through of your of your journey through this book series! Please don't stress about this so much though - we won't hold it against you that you need to unwind and relax once in a while, so allow yourself that without ruining it with worries about us 😊

Book Hermione was my favorite character growing up because I could relate so much. I was a nerdy mixed-race girl. I was actually called a mudblood once and, as much as I wanted to be hurt by it, I appreciated the Harry Potter reference. In an interview (on YouTube, it's great) between the author and the screenwriter, Hermione was said to be Steve Kloves, the screenwriter's, favorite character. He said something along the lines of: "She was the girl who was the annoying know-it-all at school, but you couldn't get her out of your head." He made her a bit of a "Mary Sue" in the movies, whereas the author has always said that Hermione is "really insecure" and a bit shrill, but has a big heart. I think the interview explains a lot of the changes Kloves made to the movie version of the character. Sorry for the long post! Loved the video, Veggie!!

Garry (Not Jerry)

Interesting. I didn’t interpret it like that at all. I heard it as a light-bulb moment where Ron realised they could fly the car to Hogwarts.

Kamilla Mari

His total lack of confidence makes him a “bad student”. Everyone’s told him that he’s basically worthless to the point where he believes putting in an effort won’t make a difference. Also, you just can’t perform good magic if you’re not confident. When DA happens it’s basically a revolution for Neville. He has always had just as much magical power and ability as the others, but he needed to believe in himself.

Kamilla Mari

I definitely think there’s a good chance that JK wrote that line because she always pictured Alan Rickman while writing Snape

Fay Evini

Thanks for the upload Veggie! If you don't mind a bit of feedback, I found this one a bit more rambly than the previous ones so it was a bit harder to watch, though it might just be that I'm more impatient today, so take it with a grain of salt. Anyways, can't wait for the next one!

VeggieGamer

Thanks for the honest feedback, Fay! Yeah after the first chapter I couldn't believe how long I had been recording for! I hope it got a little easier after that and I'll make sure to not get too sidetracked in future episodes! I always appreciate comments like this, it's the only way I can improve! :)

VeggieGamer

This is really interesting to read, Ali! Thanks so much for sharing! I think I should probably check out that interview eventually! :)

Nix001

We had a Ford Anglia when I was young. That would have been in the mid-sixties when my dad bought it new!

itsanursething

It's his lack of confidence and also his wand. Think back. Where did Neville get his wand? I don't want to say more because spoilers!!

itsanursething

I personally don't mind the long videos, but if you're worried about the length you could always break them up. For example, post the chapters in one video and the book club bit in another video. Or if the chapters are long maybe only do 2 chapters. And you could post them more frequently as like a part 1/part 2 kind of thing. However you decide to do you're videos, I will be more than happy to watch :) Technically, you can win a quidditch game without a seeker. The game ends when the snitch is caught and that team gets 150 points. But! If the other team has more points, they can still win. I think the issue was the Gryffindor team didn't have enough players. You must have 7 players and with Harry out, they were one short. My understanding of the detention with Lockhart is that he knows how famous Harry is and wants to gain even more notoriety by being close to Harry. He wants people to think he and Harry are close because that means more publicity for himself. I think... I do agree with you that Lockhart is threatened a bit by Harry.

Hawwah

The wand - yes, that is a fair point, I totally forgot about that. However, Ron also has somebody else's wand in his first 2 years at Hogwarts and he is nowhere as hopeless as Neville, so the wand itself can't explain it. "Also, you just can’t perform good magic if you’re not confident." Where in the books does it say that? Young Snape wasn't very confident and he was a brilliant student. Lupin has self-esteem issues even as an adult and he is still a powerful wizard.

Katie

@Hawwah Spoilers for book 6 We see that Merope has such little confidence that she can barely perform magic. I think this definitely also applies to Neville early on because he's been put down so much by his family who were convinced he was a squib. His lack of confidence definitely factors in to his inability to perform good magic early on. Getting a new wand definitely helps him too though

Loveinthehat

I also don’t think Draco being a seeker is convenient tbh… like Draco is jealous of Harry, it would annoy him he got to be a seeker. It wouldn’t surprise me at all he got the seeker position the following year just to show he could do it as well. It’s not convenient that the slytherin team would let him in either, especially since he has a lot of money and his dad bought them all good brooms. I feel like it would be considered convenient if that’s something his character wouldn’t do, but him doing something because Harry is doing it is exactly who he is as a person. It’s less by chance that this happened and more that Draco made it happen.

ari

that's probably what the film makers were going for and it makes sense when you put it that way. but it simultaneously sounded like ron was a bit confused hehe

Garry (Not Jerry)

Haha! I just watched it again. I see what you mean. There is definitely a lightbulb moment where he blinks, then he sort of looks confused when he says “the car”. It’s almost like a bit of disgust - like he can’t believe he hasn’t already thought of it. To be honest, it feels like it’s more just Rupert grint’s mannerisms. I still interpret his expression as “aha!” Even though it looks like confusion. It’s hard to explain why.

Diego Zenhäusern

I never even noticed this and I've read the books like 6 or 7 times at least 🙈😮

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I think it would be convenient if Draco happened to be the best Seeker Slytherin could find that year.🤔 But the fact that Draco clearly bought his way into the team shows that it was his choice to become Seeker and therefore no coincidence at all!🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

I actually never though about the fact that the Snape scene was weird in the move. It was probably because Snape is the "bad" guy in the scene and you're used to the fact that the "good" guy will "win"/ "be saved" and so I never questioned the fact that it's quite out of character for both Dumbledore and McGonagall to be rather nonchalant about it🙈😅 Also: I'm pretty sure that what Ron means with "We would have died out by now if we hadn't started marrying Muggles." is that the Wizarding population is comparatively small and therefore they would probably have started to run into serious issues with incest and resulting genetic defects if they hadn't started to marry Muggles and thereby increased their gene pool.

Rebecca May

Re. The scene in Professor Snape's office, I take no issue with Alan's performance and the way he chose to play that scene... it makes perfect sense to me given what we know of his character. That being said, you're right that the way the scene was constructed overall was a bit off, and somewhat unfair to Snape. I wonder if they changed it because of the time constrictions - some of his worse moments don't ever make it to screen because he simply isn't in the films for long enough. So the change in tone may have been because the filmmakers saw it as an opportunity to highlight/re-establish Severus as an antagonist to Harry.

MarcusTheWeak

Love these a lot! Please keep it up 🙂 is there any chance you could upload the audio as a separate downloadable file? No worries if it's too much work, it's just that the unlisted YouTube video isn't really supported on Android apart from through the webapp so I can't cast or listen without closing the browser.

Triene

Idk how this works on android, but I start playing the YouTube video, then I open YouTube on my phone and cast or I open YouTube on my tv and resume. It’s in my library history once I start playing it.

Annamarie schwirian

Thank you so much i love your discussions. I think Lockhart is super jealous of Harry. I mean every single wizard and witch have heard of Harry. Not everyone has heard of Lockhart.

Thunderbird

Exactly, like it has been the case with the famous Slytherin pureblood families!

Diego Zenhäusern

There are also free online softwares that let you download YouTube videos as mp3 files...so that might be a last resort option for you🤔

Thunderbird

Great reaction as always, I love hearing your thoughts as you discover the books. One thing I love in particular about the books, is all the information we get about side characters like the Weasley twins, the teachers, Olive Wood etc. while the movie focuses mainly on Harry, Ron and Hermione. But as a Ravenclaw I really wish we had a cool and badass representation like the other houses do. I feel like mostly a bit odd people are sorted in Ravenclaw like Luna, Professor Trelawney or the moaning Myrtle. Yes, it fits because they think outside the box and obviously I love the characters we know from Ravenclaw. But I feel like they’re all a little weird (which is not necessarily bad but it’s very noticeable). My favourite Ravenclaws are Professor Flitwick and Ollivander. Also I think another reason for Ron not asking for a new wand besides a howler is that his family is very poor and they can’t afford it. In my opinion that is why he is too scared to ask, which he would never admit to Harry. PS : My favourite magical creature is a Thunderbird. 😊

Kunzite Blossom

As soon as you said Cornish Pixies might be your favorite magical creature I just thought to myself "just you wait..." Fantastic Beasts will have MANY new creatures, and there's one I think you might love. As for who was seeker while Harry was in the hospital in the first book, it's never said. However I don't want to give any spoilers to later books BUT it is possible to have a replacement. My guess is a chaser took position as seeker for the game. Which means 1 of 2 things happened. They were either down a chaser, which would explain why the defeat was so horrible as they would be down 1 person. Or they had a fill in from the reserve (given there were reserves for the other positions) but given we never hear of training with the reserves, that would probably mean that fill in may not have been very good (or may not have played well with the team) which could also explain why they had a horrible defeat. When it comes to Ron mentioning if they didn't marry muggles they would die out. It's easy. You know how many purebloods have married cousins just to keep the pureblood line going? Eventually it would just be more and more merges till there are less and less families left. Some family names are over already at this point if there are no males to carry on the name. Sure you would get muggleborns still being born but purebloods would essentially die out if all these families keep merging. Pretty much ever pureblood alive is related in some way. I mean Ron, Harry and Draco are basically all cousins, distantly, as well as most of the other purebloods in the school. I could show you a family tree if that would be easier. Bookclub: yes, the rest of the books will have a lot of changes. I think you will find 4 and 5 really shocking. I remember growing up on the movies and when I first listened to the audio books a few years ago listening to book 4 I was so confused and thought I mixed up some stuff. Won't say what, i'll let you find that out. Oh and with Lockhart and why he wanted to do certain things like make Harry do his detention, once you finish all the books I'll say it again: Watch the Super Carlin Brothers "Dumbledore's Plan" series on youtube in your own time. It honestly is so amazing what theorys they have and it really helps understand so much, even if that wasn't what the author was going for.

Rachel

The Griffindor quidditch team it's the same from book 1 to book 3. Oliver Wood, Fred and George Weasley, Katie Bell, Angelina Johnson, Alicis Spinnet and Harry. Yes, you can win a match without the seeker (very difficult). In the movie Hermione explains what it means to be a Mudblood

Shannon Elizabeth

Another incredible book club video! Can’t wait for the next one 💛🦡💛

Annette Elliott

Rocket rider in Dr. Strangelove is actor Slim Pickens. The screeching bird women are harpies not banshees. I believe banshees are more ghostly with a terrible wailing voice.

Ghost

according to google, a banshee is a female spirit of Irish folklore that heralds the death of family member by wailing.

Haley Baird

Lockhart saying he wants peace between Wizards and Muggles seems like the equivalent of a pageant queen saying she wants world peace. Like it's the answer the crowd loves to hear. At least that's my interpretation!

Kunzite Blossom

I never thought of it that way. Though it makes sense. I'm sure if Lockhart could find a way to join a beauty pagent he would.

S1lm4r1l

I'm inclined to blame the director more than Rupert.

S1lm4r1l

I've always assumed that Gryffindor played without a seeker and simply attempted to score enough goals before the opposing seeker caught the snitch. As for Lockhart, I've always assumed it was a Slughorn-type situation with Lockhart thinking he's befriending Harry and thus able to use him to stay famous and popular. (Obviously, because Lockhart's an idiot, it doesn't work out like he wants it to.) Fudge and Scrimgeour both try and piggy-back on Harry's popularity and become very frustrated that Harry refuses to play ball.

Kunzite Blossom

It is possible they did play without a seeker, I think either way it would explain their horrible defeat. Lockhart is a crazy story. I love the Carlin Brothers theory on why he got hired, I won't say it incase Veggie reads this, but if you haven't seen those, it might be interesting. Though Dumbledore's reasoning for hiring Lockhart has nothing to do with the way Lockhart treats Harry, but I could see Lockhart trying to befriend Harry for his own popularity. I mean Harry is known by everyone, even the kids. They grew up hearing about him. Lockhart may be famous, but not to the level of Harry. He just wanted to be more well known so more people would love him. So maybe not a true friendship, but more like just using Harry. Fudge and Scrimgeour for sure tried to use Harry for their own gain also, but more so the people wouldn't revolt against them thinking Harry (who is basically their savior) is on their side so the ministry can't be wrong. Slughorn does try and use Harry but for a different way. More for a personal gain of getting stuff for himself, not to necessarily make himself more famous or to please anyone else. It's interesting to actually see how different people try and use his fame but for different reasons.

Reyna

Hi Veggie! I have a suggestion for you going forward with this series of book reactions: since your reaction video is mainly audio (there is no movie playing), maybe you can open a Spotify channel and upload audio versions of your episode reactions. For me, personally, it will mean that I don't have to keep YouTube open for so long or use so much mobile data for the video. For you it might open a new audience on Spotify that will search for harry potter podcasts :)

VeggieGamer

Hi Reyna!! Yeah I really need to give that a think, had a couple of people ask for them to be posted as Podcasts, etc! Thanks so much for the suggestion! :)

VeggieGamer

.. Well THIS will be making an appearance in the next book review! Thanks, Kat!!

Lena

If this does get considered, will it be both? I have a hearing disability, so audio-only cuts me out due to lack of subtitles, which are a huge help. I'm loving this series.

VeggieGamer

Hi Meleena! Oh don't worry, the videos will always be the main focus, with the audio as an alternative. :)

Sphynx

Hey veggie, you mightve mentioned this before so i do apologize, but when do you think you'll be reacting to fantastic beasts? much love

VeggieGamer

Hi Sphynx! So sorry for the wait on these. I plan on covering them next after the Hobbit, if that is ok!

Sphynx

Of course veggie! You take it easy and take your time

Ziro the Hutt

Slight note on the location of Hogwarts. Its never stated specifically that Hogwarts is in Scotland, but it is mentioned in the film of Prisoner of Azkaban, that Sirius Black is spotted near Dufftown which Hermione says isn't far from 'here' (Hogwarts); and Dufftown is a real place in Scotland. Also the scenery of the films can only be Scotland, as well as the Glenfinnan Viaduct (the bridge which is always seen in the films). As an aside Veggie, I wouldn't mind you going over Star Wars. I'm a patreon on a few other channels purely for their reactions to Star Wars content, especially the animations which are some of the best SW content out there (in fact both Rebels and The Clone Wars are imho, the best thing we have in the franchise since Empire Strikes Back in 1980). You'll also see that my avatar is of an (in)famous droid in the animations, as he is awesome!
