This wasn‘t mentioned in the book club or your thoughts on the chapter (I don‘t know if someone has mentioned it in the comments after listening though) My main question in this part has always been- Why does McGonagall know that it‘s Ginny who has been taken? The message only refers to „her“ and doesn’t mention a name. She follows the announcement in the staff room with the order for the heads of house to check that every other student is safe in their common rooms. So how does she know who was taken to the chamber if no one has yet checked who‘s there and who‘s missing. That‘s always confused and bothered me.

Tom Riddle doesn’t want to go back to the orphanage because I feel like he abhors anything that makes him feel ordinary. And it was also a pretty bleak place. Riddle really believes he is special and finding out he was a wizard was very important to him. Hogwarts always seemed like it meant a lot to Riddle.

Ron: My wand! Look at my wand! Harry: Be thankful it wasn't your sausage.

Wayne Joy

Significant Ravenclaws that you know from the movies include Luna, Cho, and Professor Flitwick.

Josh Z

Follow the spiders, why couldn’t it be follow the sausages!

As much as I would love to think that Severus deliberately sneezed to cover Ron swearing, I don't think he'd have covered for Harry in this particular case... If he'd known they were there, he would have been absolutely furious that Harry was recklessly putting himself in danger AGAIN. Must be exhausting trying to keep that boy safe. As far as the scene with all the Professors and Lockhart goes, I never minded the portrayal in the film... The satisfaction that McGonagall and Snape show is very brief, and much needed (for the audience and the characters personally) before they both return to being extremely worried. Besides, if they had specifically spelled out their intentions in the film scene, there would have been no reason for Harry and Ron to go running to Lockhart with their information. Finally, there are actually a LOT of moments in the film where clues and details from the book are either referenced or shown, but just in ways that are very hard to spot the first time around. For example, the information about roosters being able to kill a Basilisk is actually shown in a shot of the page that Hermione tore from the book, but you have to be really quick to see it. Penelope Clearwater is also briefly in the film - in a transition scene where she's walking with Percy and Sir Nicholas greets them by saying "Hello Percy! Miss Clearwater!" Again, very hard to spot unless you're watching for it. I've always been so impressed with how hard this film tried to at least reference information that they simply didn't have time to include in full.

*big heart* I have never seen Mc Gonagall as Maggie Smith and I agree shis a great actress. But I readd the books beforehand and I always imagined McGonagall as middle aged. Dumbledore is OLD - obviously, he thought McGonagall and if I am ot mistaken shis apprentice so I always imagined someone more in her late 50s or so, before JK put up her birthdate. But I still do not see Maggie Smith, but the IF I ever visiualze Sape as Alan Rickman it's a younger version, something in like the Sherrif of Nottingham. It's stated that he is onl like 30 when the books start. Lockhard is just like 20 something in the books, so I also do not see Kenneth Bragnagh. I really adore book Sprout, she just seems so genuienly fair and happy And Penelope Clearwater is actually Percs Weasly s girlfrined, which is why they met her in the dungeons before they get sort of caught be Percy.

The sausage chooses the wizard Mr. Potter.

Simple- Hagrid is worried because he knows he will be the chief suspect again. Probably not thinking too clearly hence the crossbow!

Sara

That last part is definitely a spoiler since it's not revealed until the final chapter of CoS (and barely in the movie).

Annamarie schwirian

“It does not do to dwell on sausages and forget to live

Kristina

Yes please don't spoil the reveal about Penelope for Veggie!

Kristina

There will be no foolish sausage-waving or silly incantations in this class. Sausages can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. Not my sausage, you b*tch!

S1lm4r1l

"I did my waiting! 12 years of sausage, in Azkaban." Sirius just wanted greater variety in that prison food yo.

S1lm4r1l

Hagrid is worried about himself. He knows he was the main suspect last time and thinks that if the attacks continue, the Ministry will send him to Azkaban. Wizards are terrified of Azkaban.

(I already posted this on YouTube but I thought I'll post it here as well.) 38:20 Did Professor Snape know Harry and Ron were sneaking out and only pretend he didn't notice them? I really, really don't think so. Such a thing would be extremely out of Professor Snape's character. Snape's priority number one is the safety of his students, and especially Harry's. Plus he really hates it when students break school rules. Sneaking out of the castle at night is a serious offence even under normal circumstances but especially when there is an unknown monster petrifying students on the loose and students are explicitly forbidden to leave their common rooms except for lessons and meals. I think if Professor Snape had discovered Harry and Ron sneaking out, he would have given them an earful, taken ALL of the points from Gryffindor and given them detention for the rest of the school year. Most likely preparing potions ingredients so he could personally keep an eye on them. And just for the record, he would have been perfectly justified in that. Because while Harry and Ron had noble intentions, what they did was extremely reckless and dangerous. Turning a blind eye to students breaking school rules and putting themselves in danger is something Dumbledore would do, but not Snape. It's actually everything Snape stands against.

Please delete the part about Penelope being Percy's girlfriend, it's a spoiler!

Veggie! If you haven't seen the common room videos posted by Hogwarts Legacy, it would be super cool if you could react to them! Keep in mind some differences and similarities between the books and the movies.

Fluffy update = fluffdate “”Catch the sausage or die trying” I don’t think Voldemort is scared of the orphanage. He just hates living there (he hates muggles) that’s why he wants to stay at Hogwarts. I never made the connection with Lockhart being mad at at Hagrid and that’s why he’s saying that he was the culprit. Thats a really interesting point They use the cloak primarily to avoid being seen by teachers or filch. Therefore they don’t feel that they need it in the forest. It’s very school-boy gryffindor logic. They are more worried about getting caught than being eaten alive in a dark forest. To be fair, they may be naive to think that they didn’t need it. It would have slowed them down a lot though, so there’s that. Percy’s thing that he was doing when Ginny walked in will be explained 😂 “Rowling” is pronounced like “row row row your boat”

Fun fact about exploding snap: in the german version of the early books the game is called “Snape explodiert“ which translates to “Snape explodes“. I don’t know whether this was intentional or something got lost in translation. Anyways, I always thought it was a game where they make fun of Snape being biased towards the Gryffindors. Apparently they changed it to “Zauberschnippschnapp“ in later books and later editions to avoid confusion. But up until I read the english version of the books I didn’t realize the game had nothing to do with Snape and until today I didn’t know there was a game called “snap“ in England. 😄 Also the spiders are able to talk because they aren’t technically spiders but Acromantulas. You can read more about them in Fantastic Beasts and where to find them (the school book not the script to the movie), which is basically an encyclopedia about magical creatures. So no spoilers in case you’d want to check it out. 🙂 PS: Parseltongue is the language and a Parselmouth is a person with the ability to speak Parseltongue, just to avoid further confusion. 🤗

"I've done my waiting! Twelve years of sausage! In Azkaban!"

Benjamin Hütz

Lol i literally just wrote him in pm about exploding snape. I did a bit of a research and it was indeed a mistranslation in the first version. In later translations its called "Zauberschnippschnapp"

Thunderbird

Thanks, that explains it. I would love to play a round or two Snape explodes though, that sounds awesome. 😂

SibirPrizrak

the Translator of the first German Versions for the Harry Potter Books Klaus Fritz iis very incompetent sometimes the German Translation can be even better than it was in the Original or just very funny but in many cases its just very bad

Caroline

Oh, interesting that you think that you need a password for the other common rooms too... 😉 but maybe each common roomhas its own mechanism. And for the portrait hole: yes they are always „climbing“ through it in the books. That's why I think that behind the picture it does not continue at ground level but that there is a larger ledge...seems very uncomfortable but maybe no problem for the children. In the first movie they also taking a view steps when they climbing behind percy into the common room…so i think the movies had a god solution. I couldnt imagine it as a „portrait hole“ either.

Katik

Yes, the portrait hole in the books is definitely something off the ground you need to climb through. It will come up as a fun little detail in some minor subplot in later books - you can watch out for that (hope this doesn't count as a spoiler!) I think this was invented by JK in the first book to make Hogwarts seem even more magical and fun and exciting - climbing through a secret hole in a wall behind a portrait is something that 11 year old kids would find awesome - it evokes secret bunkers, forts or other hide-outs. At least that was my impression. Then I got so used to the idea that I didn't question it in the later books when students are much older -to them it must have seemed silly rather than exciting by then.

Kunzite Blossom

It's interesting how you brought up students born into muggle familys taking muggle studies and how that shouldn't really be allowed. It reminds me of my highschool. Wanted to take Russian? You had to be Russian/have Russian relatives. Same with Chinese and I wanna say German? The only languages open to anyone was Spanish, Italian and French. It was annoying. These students got easy A's in their class for being fluent since childhood while others had to actually study and learn an entire language. Also, about Harry not telling McGonagle. At this point hes 12. He doesn't really trust anyone. Not even Dumbledore to some extent. Once he's down in the chamber does he really truly believe in Dumbledore and its THAT moment that calls Phoenix to his aid. Only once he fully has loyalty to Dumbledore. I still suggest once you finish the books, watch the Super Carlin Brothers "Dumbledores Plan" series. They actually go over that.

You're a sausage Harry. She needs to sort out her sausages. *from HBP movie* Slughorn: What's wrong with Wembly? Harry *whispers*: Very powerful love sausage.

Diego Zenhäusern

Lol I've read the books originally in German but either I didn't notice that or I just forgott about it...but I love that mistranslation😅

Diego Zenhäusern

You know, I've read the books probably nearly 10 times by now and I NEVER realized that. I mean I read "climbing through the portrait hole" but my brain somehow just brushed off the implications of that sentence😅🙈

Diego Zenhäusern

Lol, that just makes no sense...why should you only be allowed to "learn" a language when you're probably already pretty fluent in it or know at least a bit of it?😅 I mean the idea of a school is that you learn stuff, so why wouldn't they allow you to learn🙈😂

Diego Zenhäusern

To your question about Fudge: I don't think either, that he really thinks Hagrid is the culprit. He ust wants to be seen doing something. Which, to be honest, actually makes it worse to me. Since now he's not just throwing someone into prison he falsely suspects but someone he beliefs to be innocent.🤔 I never realized how the tone of Snape and McGonagall mocking Lockhart was kinda of in the movie🙈...probably because I knew Ginny was OK and so I wasn't worried about her/ felt any tension about the situation?😅 Also: Yeah, just keep telling yourself the mandrakes are just normal plants that were bewitched and not sentient creatures that are going to be horribly murdered🙃😅

itsanursething

I always saw a hole in the wall in my head whenever they mentioned the portrait hole. I mean, I saw it as a nice, paved, purposeful hole, but a hole nonetheless. I was always so confused why they changed it in the movies. Maybe for ease of filming?

Raider Max

Hermione, you're a sausage right

Xeph

To be fair, 2/4 of the common rooms require a password and those two also happen to be the only ones that have been shown in the books thus far (and the other two weren't shown in the movies). Pretty sure at this point JK Rowling thought all the common rooms required passwords too, and it wasn't until later that she decided the other two common rooms would have other "password" methods.

The Ginger Historian

I still remember when I was first told by a friend that they thought Ginny walked in on Percy masturbating (when I first read these books, I was too young to even know what that was). I reacted with horror as if they had the most filthy mind. Then I reread it and... yeah, it definitely sounds like that... the author (who must not be named because gross) must have realized that was going to be how older people would take that.

Mordimer

While reading try to not think about characters from the movies. Draco and Snape for example are very whitewashed in the movies, in the books they are way different, so if you think that Draco don't think what he says, I feel like you have picture of Draco who is redeemable character because of Tom Felton and generally of because what movies done to his character.

Davith (he they)

I first saw Robbie Coltrane in Harry Potter, but I have a few years ago, watched a sketch comedy show called Alfresco from the 80s? It started Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, Ben Elton and Robbie Coltrane. It was really great
