Love this episode, one of Season 1's best for sure. I love how BtVS always mixes the drama and comedy so perfectly together makes for such a roller coasters of a journey. Would love you to also check out Angel at some stage as well as Firefly and Serenity if you don't already know those too.

I love this episode one of my favs of season one lots of heart and comedy and Xander being the first one to mater his fear is class

Captain Hammer

My recurring nightmare is spiders on me when I'm sleeping. My biggest waking fear is being homeless with no family or friends just wandering the streets alone until I die.

I’d say this is my third favorite but the second best episode of the season. The best is the last one. The next one is my second “favorite”. (Whoever’s seen it can guess the reason.) But this one is incredible. SMG’s acting in that scene is my litmus test for reactors. You more than passed! The exploration of both Giles’s character and Buffy’s through their fears, and, especially in what I can only see as a mutual nightmare, toward the end. And as you said, the mixture of humor and drama. Plus the way they perfectly bent the rules of reality to fit the storytelling, using a Twilight Zone premise which affected the real world just as much as any monster would. (The only weakness is Joss Whedon’s tendency to scapegoat sports. He was bullied as a kid. I get it, but it makes for lesser drama to try to bring it up so often. The issue is more complex than he makes it. Not that I have a shred of sympathy for the coach. But I think that factor keeps this from being in the top level of Buffy episodes, and just the second level, along with many other great ones.) Veggie Gamer: “I need somebody to appear naked in front of the class”. Boom! he gets his wish. On the other hand, it took you two whole episodes to get the clown you ordered. At the end, Xander says “I get it” when Buffy is leading Billy to the monster because he had faced his fear with the clown. When Xander follows the trail of chocolate bars, I think he is being compelled by the dream, just like when Willow went into the basement alone and Hank Summers said what he said to Buffy. Willow already had stage fright, before the end of the talent show. She had said that she could play piano but not in front of people. When Billy wakes up, it is a Wizard of Oz moment, “You were there and you and you…” I’m assuming you’ve never seen it. It’s well worth watching.

YES!! I had forgotten when I ordered someone necked and it suddenly happened!! XD From what I have heard over the years, season 1 isn't as good as the rest, but I still rank this episode right up there!!

I have enough nightmares in real life that this happening would be terrible. They include Nazis while we're hiding someone in our car (nightmare as a kid), many terrorist situations, many mass shooting situations, many plane crashes, and also a nuclear explosion. Sometimes I can change my dreams whenever I want, but not with most of my nightmares. They almost always feel like real life, so it's not something I even think about until it gets too ridiculous, and I force myself to wakeup. So, yes, I routinely feel as though I'm in real life in the middle of a terrorist attack, etc. My fun dreams I always know are dreams, so I keep thinking to myself not to wakeup while they're going on. The first time seeing this episode as soon as they showed the kid was a baseball player I said, "Oh, the coach did it." Also, Manly (Buffy's dad but in "Little House on the Prairie") says such mean things in Buffy's nightmare. I think Xander is my favorite this episode because he's just so Xander. Someone else somewhere pointed out that his nightmare is Nazis, and it's likely because his best friend is Jewish, which, if true, shows the depth of their friendship. I give it a 6 because it's fun but very predictable for me. As far as baseball goes, second basemen historically play somewhere between first and second base and sometimes (depending on factors) are responsible for covering (catching the ball when thrown to the bag) second base.

I agree, this was one of the best episodes of the first season, not the least of which is because I love seeing the variety of nightmares and to whom they each belonged. I adored your reactions throughout! IRL, I'm a lucid dreamer and have been since I was 3 years old. I've literally never had a nightmare in my life, because if a dream starts to become upsetting, I simply change what I don't like and continue the dream. My dreams are often vivid and complex; I love them. So if this happened to me, it would likely be something revolving around a real-life fear. I have two phobias, or had. I've been an arachnophobe for most of my life, but a few months ago, a video of an adorable, friendly jumping spider captured my heart. I began watching videos and researching information on spiders, and joined two spider groups on Facebook. The more I learn about these fascinating creatures, the more I appreciate them and the less I fear them. I used to remove them from my dreams as they scared me, but lately I've been having dreams with spiders in them as my PETS, and no fear whatsoever. I've been able to relocate spiders from inside my house, releasing them alive outside. I even kept a hacklemesh weaver in a habitat for a week, feeding him and observing him before releasing outside. I consider myself now a *recovering* arachnophobe, and I adovocate for no-harm to spiders. Anyway, my "nightmare" come true based around a real-life fear would no longer be spiders, LOL. My other phobia is absolutely ridiculous, and many people don't understand, but in that alternate world, I would be surrounded by human babies and toddlers, all crawling around me. It makes my flesh creep to think of it; I'm severely pedophobic. Strange but true. Started in my teen years.

Buffy, the show, is like pizza to its fans. (I think, anyway.) Even a "bad" episode is still considered pretty good. So you can stop being afraid of liking one everyone hates. LOL That's very unlikely to happen. For instance, to me, this is a 5 or 6 out of 10 episode. But, watching you enjoy it so much made me reconsider. LOL One gets so used to how amazing an actress SMG is that one forgets how amazing she is in this episode. And, you're right, she absolutely is, and so are the actors who play Willow, Xander and Giles. The actor who plays Billy looks a lot like a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so that may be why he looks so familiar to you. That was certainly the case for me. He's not a young Joseph Gorden-Levitt, though. I have so many irrational fears that I wouldn't know where to start. I'm mostly afraid of people in a very abstract sort of way. Social anxiety. So I'm not entirely sure how a nightmare world would "improve" on what the normal world already has to offer in that regard. ::shrug:: It is what it is and it's mostly fine. I'm just saying....

Garry (Not Jerry)

Oh wow, you’re right about him looking like a young Joseph Gordon Levitt. Good call.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Good episode. Although there is another similar episode in a later series that I get it muddled up with. I think the other one better actually. This one is a solid 7.2/10 though. You were dead-on with the scooby-doo ending. It was a little cheesy. Actually buffy and friends are sometimes referred to as the “scooby gang”

This is my favorite episode of S1. This is what Buffy does best: take a creepy premise and use it to explore our characters. (And make Buffy cry!)

Giorgia M

This is my favourite of the season besides the finale, I think. I feel like we are really settling into the characters!!! Also yes, SMG is so amazing!! Her comedic timing but also ability in more dramatic, emotional scenes is really impressive. I love her so much. I don’t have that much love for the witch, something about the lighting and tone puts me off a bit. I feel like it looks like it was shot in a cupboard or something. Maybe just me lol.

Lauraly

Loved it!

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, when I watched this episode a few years ago I couldn't really appreciate how horrible and traumatizing Buffy's nightmare with her dad really was. But seeing it again really drove home how horrible this would be! And I think her great performance certainly helped a lot with that!🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Nice one for calling the "naked in class" thing! I agree, I really liked this episode and how it mixed absolutely horrifying and tragic nightmares with really funny ones like Cordelia's😅. Also something I was thinking about since you were questioning whether Buffy's dad was real or not in the nightmare scene: What if he was real, but couldn't control his own actions (just like Xander didn't seem to be fully himself in the chocolate scene) and so part of his worst nightmare was beeing unable to stop himself from saying those horrible things to Buffy?😥

Diego Zenhäusern

Wow, that's pretty impressive how you were able to confront your phobia like that! I personally don't mind seeing spiders...but only as long as there is a pane of glas separating them from me (or when they're really tiny)🙈😅

Giorgia M

Yeah, I totally agree with you Diego!! It’s so interesting how your perspective changes. I think reflecting on it now as an adult imagining saying that to younger family of mine breaks my heart even more. It’s sadder now I understand being the parent and the child. Buffy’s relationship with her dad is something that I think is foundational to her character so these moments are so important 😌

Saiyasha

Buffys Converstaion with her father alwayd hit so hard. It is just so real and that makes it so cruel. The Idea that maybe it was you, maybe if you hab been better, then your parents would be happier... It is so hard to silence thise voices in your head, imagine a parent actually saying them to your face.
