Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Frieren caught my attention with its English title: "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." What an interesting idea, I thought -- what *does* happen after the heroes saved the world? Especially for an elf, who may have *hundreds* of years left after that seminal journey? The "danger" of interesting premises like this though is that all too often, the premise is where all the interest sits. Writers come up with a really interesting high concept that has a lot of fertile ground for interesting storytelling, but then they don't always deliver on the potential that the premise promises. It's as if the "core" of the story idea is solely in the premise, rather than the premise being a vehicle for the characters and thematic ideas that make up the story itself. The result is a story that either meanders around, not sure of what it wants to say about the world or its characters, or slips into story beats that kinda betray what was interesting about the premise to begin with (hello SAO, how you doin') Fortunately, Frieren *does* deliver pretty spectacularly on its premise. It not only answers "what _does_ happen with the heroes after the world is saved" but also offers thoughtful commentary on life, the passage of time, memory, grief, legacy... so many ideas that gain an extra dimension when we see them through the lens of the main character. From the very first episode, it's just *dripping* in thematic work, and I love stories like that. I guess to be fair, the story isn't over yet -- the manga is ongoing, and thus so is the anime. (Season 3 announced for October 2027!) So... they still have time to mess it up with a bad ending 😅 But so far I have faith in the author that they'll do just fine. 🙂

I really love when I find a new anime reactor that really gets the full picture in a show like Frieren ☺️

I like how focused you are on the intro theme. Im excited to see you piece things together as the season goes on Youll prob hear this a lot but an example of how focused and well done the show is would be how heiter's bottle of alcohol he is holding when he stops Fern from taking her own life and the one frieren brought him when she came back into his life are the 2 bottles of alcohol that Frieren pours on his grave. Ive always found that to be beautiful. How a man like Heiter gave up drinking to be like Himmel and have as much time with Fern as possible. But also linking the memory of Fern and the memory of Frieren with those 2 bottles and those 2 pouring them out at his grave. Its beautiful imagery. That exchange with Fern and Frieren at the end of the search always hits me so hard. Its beautiful in so many different ways and adds to their characters so well. Im so glad you love the ending theme and especially the line"Im whispering our lullaby for you to come back home."

Frieren's anime director has done an incredible job of capturing the incredible storytelling of the manga's author. The pacing and animation is so well done to bring the authors work to life. You are the exact type of person the author as well as the anime's director loves to have embracing their work. More to come :)

You got my support from watching your first EP on yt. Glad this is one of your first anime. This will put you on track to the whole world of anime not just being stuck on shonen.mwe need to add a rom com anime to your reactions ns to round out your watching experience. Toss an isekei in there as well. I have recomendations for both. I also heavily ask you to react to TO BE HERO X in Japanese dub not the original Chinese. It's story, animation, and music, is top tier

Dingo

Always remember "it's what Himmel would have done"

Dingo

Also you should look up the meanings of all their names as well

‘Can she love ?!’ … omg

Tysm for this comment!! 💛 I get really immersed when I watch things, ESP anime I'm finding. I will say tho with Frieren even going back and editing I STILL see so many details where I'm like omg idk if I even noticed that the first time. I just edited ep 2 for YT and I'm like woah this scene related to ep 7 in this way etc etc Frieren has so many nuances to it I think I'm going to go back when I'm done and rewatch again/go down all the reddit rabbitholes lol 🐇 Then give my final discussion/analysis in a final video

aloekayeANIME

So happy seeing your comments in both Frieren and DS. Glad to have you on the journey with me my friend 💛

That phrase makes me tear up even reading this rn in the morning lol Ty all for giving me little breadcrumbs/insight cues to hold onto and look for as I'm watching, without any major details/spoilers. You guys are so good about that I appreciate it 💛

aloekayeANIME

Yes EXACTLY. I keep thinking about this theme also and even just with the first ep title being 'The Journey's End' like what an intriguing/odd place to begin a show. I know for myself, that growing up in a society/world that often hyperfixates on perfectionism and productivity, making sure I'm doing 'enough' with my life and that I'm good 'enough' etc I have to do all these huge things with my life or something. But Frieren is allowing me to really appreciate that life has just as much meaning in little moments/memories/details.. And you're right Frieren I think does such a spectacular job (even as I watch the episodes back in editing) at tying in all these diverging themes and details within the storyline so beautifully and thoughtfully. Still learning about manga and anime, but I'm glad that the manga is still going!! 🙌

aloekayeANIME

Tysm for this 💛 I appreciate these insights I didn't even notice that about the bottle detail! Ugh, I'm just loving the journey of Frieren so much. I feel like I could watch it 10x and get something new pieced together in my brain each time. And I feel it's such a timeless show, like the way the show has impacted me at this point in my life could be completely different 10 years from now or when other life circumstances arise. And this in itself even ties into the theme of time, there's just so many layers. What a gift of a show truly. 🥹

aloekayeANIME

This is a really insightful comment, I have been noticing some things in how the story is told (animation style, music production, scene progression, etc.) but the way you put it is really intriguing, makes me want to find out so much more in this regard. It also means a lot that you feel the author/director would love my reactions to Frieren. I can tell I'm not the only one who deeply connects with and loves the show, I'm so happy you're all here with me 💛

aloekayeANIME

'OMG' WHAT?? Hahaha no but honestly tho I can't even imagine how many walls she has up... It's been heartwarming seeing them come down and see her show more of herself with more episodes. I know she loves ppl, but romantically that wouldn't really work out right?

WanderingBecauseLostLol

Careful with reddit rabbit holes or you'll get spoiled on manga content that hasn't made it to the anime yet 😂

On May 21, 2024 in Taiwan there was a man that was attacking people with a knife. One man, Mr Hsu Rui-hsian, suffered facial wounds while restraining the attacker. When asked later about it, he stated that it's what Himmel the Hero would have done.

True story

Dingo

The was also a guy who was in a mall and something caught fire and peoples le started to panic and he put it out, possibly saving lives. Was wearing a himmel cosplay btw

Shiffer

Intros in anime are called Openings, and outros are called Endings, they both always are exactly 1:30 min long no matter the show, its the standard

Shiffer

uff I am already loving your reactions you making all the right questions

FeynDoKeizaal

I just discovered this patreon, and im in love with the way you watch the show! I hope you keep going <3
