Episode 10 is getting closer! :)

Fun fact that is lost in translation: The Japanese title is "Sousou no Frieren", and it reads as "Frieren at the Funeral". However, Sousou can ALSO mean Slayer, so when Lugner remembers who she is, its a title drop.

HalcyonSerenade

Lügner's power... talk about a "Blood Demon Art", he's stuck in the wrong show 🤡

Thoroughly enjoying your content! Keep up the grind.👍

I would like to clarify that for this series specifically the context they use the word "humanity" in encompasses all of humans, elves and dwarves (excludes demons, a type of monster). It's just a spot of translation awkwardness as far as I can tell.

The English translation of *Freiren the Slayer* was a spot-on and intriguing translation, particularly in the context of “demons.” In Japanese, the term “葬送=sōsō” generally refers to the series of rituals involved in bidding a final farewell to the deceased and sending them off to the crematorium or cemetery. This meaning differs slightly from the religious ceremonies commonly known as “funerals.” Freiren has faced various forms of “death”—not limited to demons—and has sent countless people on their way to the afterlife. As I delve deeper into this story, I am reminded once again just how brilliant the Japanese title, *葬送のフリーレン*, truly is.

It seems there are many words in Japanese that cannot be translated into English. I think it’s safe to view the “demons” that appear in *Freiren* simply as a race different from humans. To put it simply, they are beings like vampires or werewolves. Furthermore, the “demons” that appear in *Demon Slayer* are generally called “Oni” in Japan, and it is said that when humans are consumed by emotions such as jealousy or hatred, they turn into Oni. To put it simply, they can be likened to a character like Anakin Skywalker, or—to use a modern example—someone like “Karen.” As a result, harboring negative emotions has long been considered a bad thing in Japan.

I got another reaction pic The Graf said "I thought my son had come for me". Stark must remind him very much of the warrior that died fighting against Aura's army. Fun fact: when Ludger realizes its Frieren the words he uses are "Soso no Frieren" which is the name of the series in Japanese because it means Frieren: At the Funeral but it can also mean Frieren the Slayer. I also like how you realize that speaking with the souls in Aureole is an infinite database. Makes you think why the Demon King's castle was placed so close to Aureole 🤔

When she kills Draht and says "that's one down" in the subtitles, the word she uses to refer to him is "ippiki." It's the "1" form of the counter 匹 (hiki), which Japanese uses for cats, dogs, fish, insects, mice, and other small-to-medium animals. It's essentially a parting diss.

HalcyonSerenade

I've got nothing to add for this one that others haven't already said🤷‍♂️ I've got plenty to say about the upcoming two though 🙊

Chris pastore

the only thing Frieren and Demon Slayer have in common is that they both have "Demons" in them, despite them being depicted completely different in the two shows. they dont really share anything in common past that.

Karmac

frieren makes a comment about battle experiance draht thinks he won because even frieren cant dispell the wire but if you cant cut the wire cut the arm this roundabout thinking comes up alot in this show and magic system

JosephR

dude I'm glad you mentioned that because there's been a million times where I go "but isn't that the anime name? I'm pretty sure it's not called Frieren the Slayer: Beyond Journeys End in Japanese"

Listennnn, I just scheduled next week's eps and let me tell you they were INSANE. Even just watching my own reactions to those eps back again... get ready for some over the top reactions and heavy intros/outros lol bc I think both are closer to 35 mins next week😭😂 I had TOO much to say I WAS NOT READY

aloekayeANIME

Oh this is amazingg context, very insightful around the various forms of death Frieren encounters throughout, such an interesting lens to start looking through as I watch. Thank you! 💛

aloekayeANIME

This is a really interesting perspective shift culturally for me as well, I enjoy the aspect of 'Oni' being attributed irl to humans in terms of their soul kind of being misaligned spiritually. Could play into my perceptions of a lot of the symbolism in the show moving forward! I appreciate your insights so much, theyre very detailed and thought-provoking 💫

aloekayeANIME

Oh this is so nuanced (and a very cool detail to see!). You guys are levels ahead of me haha ty for the notes as always 💛💫

Jonathan

Awesome! I can't wait! :)

I've seen a lot of people discuss this on comments in the past. I think what it comes down to is the Japanese word isn't a clear easy one to one translation to English. I think the subtitle translators did an excellent job though. For the Western audience, "Frieren the Slayer" is so hype. I asked an AI for a little summary on the translation difficulty. Basically there's a sort of double (impled?) meaning in Japanese we can't really get in English via a single word. AI says: The original title is 葬送のフリーレン (Sōsō no Furīren). 葬 — bury / funeral / consign to oblivion 送 — send off / escort / see someone on their way Together, 葬送 is the ordinary word for a funeral, a funeral procession, “sending the dead on.” の here works like the “the” in “Bush the President”: Frieren of sōsō / the Frieren known for sōsō. So the phrase is already doing two jobs before any translator touches it.

Daniel Pitts

Yes, my point was that the double meaning was there in the Japanese.

aloekayeANIME

Stoppp LOL the expressions my face makes, I can't sometimes 😭😂 I'm glad you guys are enjoying it lol sometimes I do cringe watching back but I'm like if it's what the people want hahaha And appreciate your commentary on this too. I had no idea before seeing some comments just how deeply the title itself plays into the meaning of the show (I'm not shocked tho, frieren's nuances never cease to amaze me, and they're never ending it feels). And oh boy yeah you're right that's terrifying ab Ende and Aureole if they are close...

aloekayeANIME

I said this in an above comment, but I think you guys are going to enjoy next week so much 🙌💫 Even just watching it back myself I was having so much fun seeing how I reacted and just watching the eps again, SO GOOOOOD ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

aloekayeANIME

Oh interesting. I know personally I tend to overanalyze and internalize/feel themes very intensely, so I think I've seen some relations myself even just in both protagonists being largely underestimated and then also even with the demons w their ability to use language to manipulate humankind. They're also really visually beautiful and sound production in both blows me away. But definitely I get what you mean they do seem to be more different than similar from what I've seen thus far

bukuwawa

Thanks for taking the trouble to read the comments. I hope you get to turn this into your vocation.

aloekayeANIME

Tbh reading your comments about all the lore/nuances of the show is such a fun part of this channel💫 bc I'm the same way I go down rabbitholes and love learning everything about the things I love. BUT I'm trying to remain genuine + be careful to not spoil myself by googling/redditing anything so you guys are where I'm getting any new input on the shows as I react realtime 💛

bukuwawa

Has anyone mentioned the names to you? Run any of the characters' names through a German-to-English translator.

Jonathan Gad

You've got it backwards. Flamme didn't protect the town. She protected the sprout which grew into a tree that projected the barrier around itself as it grew. Humans came around later and built the town around the tree that they could use to protect themselves from the demons!
