I believe Frieren *is* technially a shōnen by publication, because it's published in a weekly shōnen magazine. But in its tone, pacing, and themes, it's very *atypical* for a shōnen, with the mature dicussions and perspectives that you'd more associate with adult-targeted stories. Just goes to show that demographic =/= genre 🤷‍♂️ There are trends, but not rules. I included a rundown on Japanese target demographics in my big long comment on Episode 1 of Demon Slayer. (You heart'd and responded to it, so I'm *assuming* you read it 😅) I'll paste it here again since it's relevant, just as a refresher! To clarify: Japan organizes media like anime and manga (graphic novels / comic books) by *target audience* with demographic labels. The standard five are: - Shounen, targeted at young or teenage boys. By far the most common anime type because shounen manga get popular both in Japan and overseas. Tends to be worthy of a TV-14 rating in the US, either for violence (usually blood) or ~suggestive~ themes. - Shojo, targeted at young or teenage girls. - Seinen, targeted at adult males. - Josei, targeted at adult females. By far the least common anime type, because manga aren't as popular with adults *nor* with women, so *adult women* make up the smallest reader demographic. Fewer readers means less financial incentive to adapt a manga into anime. - Kodomomuke, targeted at younger children. Essentially the equivalent of TV-Y7 rated cartoons in the US. (The Pokemon anime is here) You can tell which one an anime/manga is because they're usually labeled with their target demographic. It's a marketing+publishing thing. Manga also tend to be serialized per-chapter in magazines that are often published by demographic (most famously for the US, Shōnen Jump.) Most of these serialized chapters get collected into stand-alone volumes called tankobon. The most popular of these series get adapted into anime! (Note: this is NOT the only way anime are made. Anime also frequently are adapted from light novels, and occasionally we get "anime first" series that START OUT as anime.) Target demographic label doesn't *necessarily* imply themes or genre. But just like with "toys for boys" and "toys for girls" marketing ideas, there are trends based on what themes and genres and visual styles tend to be popular for a given demographic. (It's all marketing!) Shōnen stories tend to lean heavily on action and adventure, and include themes you mentioned in [Episode 1] -- personal growth, power of friendship, etc. Shojo stories are most known for focusing on romance and interpersonal relationships. Seinen tends to follow up Shounen with much darker and introspective themes. Josei *tends* to be the most grounded, with a focus on mature relationships. (I've only ever *heard* of a handful of Josei stories! [So take my experience with those with a big fat grain of salt]) But there are *so* many exceptions that I'd hesitate to even say that "most" fall into one of those typicalities... the only hard and fast rule is whatever label it was published with! (And *sometimes* they aren't published with a single target demographic at all, but as far as I know that's a more recent thing?) So yeah -- seeing "shounen" mostly only gives you an age group expectation, and _sometimes_ that comes with expectations for genre and theme, but it's truly all over the place. You can split things up into actual genres -- for example, "Battle Shounen" as a term covers big names like Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and yes, even Demon Slayer! There's a whole slew of typical genre conventions once you narrow the specifier like that.

A couple reminders from previous episodes! - Tanjiro picked out Muzan amongst a crowd despite his disguise, and Muzan didn't like that. He summoned two demonds to go kill the demon slayer with the "hanafuda-like earrings." (Hanafuda is a type of traditional Japanese playing card!) So they saw Tanjiro's earrings that resemble hanafuda playing cards and they knew he was the target. - Nezuko has a suggestion spell placed on her by Urokodaki to see all humans as her own family, which is why we get that "flashback" moment when she looks at Lady Tamayo and... what's-his-name. She sees them as her own mother and one of her little brother. I guess the spell extends to friendly demons too? 🤷‍♂️ - This isn't a reminder, just trivia clarification: a "temari" is a woven ball. Traditionally a children's toy, with various cultural meanings associated with its tradtional-ness. I don't really have the full scope of those associations -- I just know that the Temari Demon's thing is using these toy balls as deadly weapons.

I am so happy you are wanting to truly understand the concepts and themes of these anime. If you continue watching more anime that term world building will become more and more apparent. Good world building and character development is able to take silly anime to some of the most profonde emotional and incredible things you could see on screen. Please keep giving us your thoughts, and enjoying as much as you can. I wish you the best:)

You should start reacting to two episodes at a time

I appreciate this comment so much 💛 My brain yearns to understand, and so far for me anime has just been such an interesting + thought-provoking world it's hard not to want to deep dive into all of it. It's so well done, all of it ✨💫 Glad you're enjoying the reactions + commentary!

This is a good suggestion! I was speaking with my brother on this, he said he thinks DS picks up around ep 14-15, so I'll likely keep doing one at a time (also for editing sake, time-wise, as I'm new still). But I'll keep this in back of my mind for Demon Slayer as the show progresses. ✨ Also for future animes and reactions after these two series, I'll try and see for what shows it would be helpful to bundle 2 ep reactions together. Especially for longer shows.

This was a super helpful refresher! 💛💫✨ Very interesting to hear what genre Frieren is considered to be bucketed into, but I appreciate how you say that the genre so often extends outside of the 'target audience', I know mentioned I largely connect with Tanjiro's character even as an adult woman just from my own life experiences (I connect too with many characters from Frieren as well of course). But yeah still Frieren feels like a beautiful unique blend of several of those based on the themes you outlined are typical with each genre, interesting!!
