Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

I guess you can just think of Mana as the magical form of "strength". A warrior can fight until they run out of strength. A mage can fight (cast spells) until they run out of mana. A warrior can increase their maximum strength through training, as a mage can increase their maximum mana through training.

**Frieren lore dump and fun tidbits:** > As stated by Frieren. Demon magic is beyond human understanding, as far as the viewer knows. Only "Zoltraak" was ever able to be understood, adopted and modified (by frieren) to be used by humankind. That also means, there are two entirely different magic systems. Human magic, and demon magic. > Aura, The Guillotine is a sage of destruction who is capable of an extremely overpowered demon spell under the right circumstances. However, Qual is not one of the seven sages. As he is simply known as the Sage of Corruption. It could imply that there are different extremely powerful demons out there. And even possibly other sages of destruction still being alive. > The necklace given to Stark by Graf Granat in the previous episode is a family heirloom. During the flashback that demonstrates Aura's spell. We see the same sword that came back to the Graf's posession alongside the necklace. Confirming that the warrior of powerful will is his son. Who is also seen in the present still under her control. > After freeing herself. Despite Fern's expressionless. Fern is scared throughout the fight and is trying to hold it together. Indicated by her nervousness just before Lugnar goes all out. You can also tell, she's gaining confidence as she overpowers her opponent very quickly. And if you look at her left arm. She cant use it to lift her staff throughout the fight because she sustained an injury in the shoulder. She likely learned to fight like this from Frieren. Where showing expression, shows intention, weakness and is a sign of her experience in battle.

Mana comes up in several anime, but I think it's moreso associated with rpg games. Some anime take a lot of inspiration from rpg game series, and Frieren in particular pulls heavily from the Dragon Quest franchise.

HoneyTLBadger

Yeah Aura essentially "came out of hiding" after Himmel died.

You mentioned characters having a lack of emotion - it's not so much an anime thing but just a world of Frieren thing. Every anime uses drawings and artstyles to portray their story differently. For Frieren this is probably intentional as she has lived so long things are just mundane to her, magical fights in the world of Frieren require quite a bit of calculation and focus as well. Fern has been raised by Frieren, so that's probably why her emotions are similar to Frieren. Demons on the other hand are explained to be animals without emotion. So they just have no emotion normally and fake it just to trick humans. Stark is probably the most normal out of the group where he shows regular emotions. Mana is also not specifically for anime, the word is of Maori / Hawaiian / other Island nations origin and is commonly used in many video games as MP (Mana Points) for a resource we use to cast spells

HalcyonSerenade

"Is it like HP in a video game? Is that how I should be thinking about it?" Basically, yes. Classic RPGs of the 1970s and 1980s wanted to put people in the roles of wizards and such, so they needed a way to quantify what "magic" is and how to use it. A game has to have rules after all, like real life has laws of physics. One of the ways that game designers thought of was to use a "mana pool" where you have some maximum amount of magical energy or "mana" -- let's say 100 -- and you spend that mana like a currency to cast spells. Like, casting a Fireball spell might cost 20 mana, so after casting that spell, you might have 80 mana out of a maximum 100, until you rest and recover it like you rest and recover stamina from exercise. (Depending on the game system, you might even be allowed to dump in more mana than the minimum required, and power up the spell!) Gaining power as a wizard/mage/whatever usually leads to increasing that daily maximum. This numerical idea of mana spread into video games, where it took hold because it was a simple way to systematize an abstract idea like "magical energy" that we don't really have in real life. Consequently, non-game fantasy works approached the idea of mana that same way. The story of Frieren talks about mana in that way too, as if each character has some hidden maximum mana number, and they "pay" from that number to cast spells. I usually find it more useful to explain to people that it's kind of like physical stamina: each person has an amount of "energy" their body can comfortably use, and we "pay" from that energy by doing strenuous activities like running or jumping. We might get tired after that and not he ablen run or jump anymore until we rest to get some stamina back. Mana is treated very similarly in stories like Frieren. But truth be told, the "HP meter from a video game" is a pretty apt comparison, because that's probably the frame of reference that most fantasy writers (particularly anime fantasy) are coming from. So if it helps, look at it that way! I should note that any given author is probably *not* actually tallying numbers with these things. That's usually too restrictive for writing preference and requires actually figuring out a numerical system instead of just writing the story. But stories like Frieren are almost definitely written that "shape" of system in mind, so to speak.

Matthias

You know sometimes people hype one thing reallly hard and really long wich led to the people being hype having extremely high expectation or different and specific ideas in mind wich can then ruin it for the person.

If you had more anime under your belt you'd appreciate this animation waaay more. Good and bad of. Frieren being one of your first anime it's so good but nothing to compare it to but also it's so good it sets the standard and future anime you watch may not be up to par

Matthias

The nerdy mage : "My first prediction and calcul wer'nt on the mark, i'll engage in a new strategy to collect data then revise my plan with new parameter, I'll first multiple attack as a denfese and try to weave bigger spell when an opening is seen, i should take into account the environment and the density of the air, maybe i could use a spell with a principle taht would give advanage and.... blablabla" The chad warrior : "I UNGA therefore I BUNGA, I hit the problem hard and it didn't solve enything, just mean I gotta stand up run in and HIT IT EVEN HARDER"

Matthias

"So how was your battle ? what strategy did you use to win ?" Fern : "I spammed that one spell a hundred time faster and faster every time until I killed it" Stark : "I got beat up for a while then flexed my abs when I got hit and swung down"

Manoi

22:53. No, that's Frieren thing. A lof of anime are way more expressive. It might be because the writer likes the more stoic/calmer characters like Frieren and Fern

Travis

Demons are always pretty confident so they don't show much emotions. Elves are pretty emotionless to begin with as well. Fern learned to fight from frieren so she's adopted that. It's funny to see how different they are , but also how much she's learned from frieren

WanderingBecauseLostLol

I'm gonna clarify that my word choice of "strength" here is more in the line of "oh god, I'm all out of strength I can't go on!" Whereas maybe "stamina" or something else would be the more consistent as to not trigger the rpg-knowers (I was a little triggered by my own wording lmao). END AMENDMENT

Mana = stamina for magic

Cronshaw

In some anime the power systems and stuff are very integral to the show and the narrative. That's not the case with Friren. I think you have a good handle on the mana thing what's important to know is that it's a resource that allows people to use magic. Thinking of it like hit points in a video game is a fine way to think about it. The show's magic system is deliberately vague because it's not the focus, it's a narrative tool that lets the writer tell their story. As for the flat affect thing that's definitely not an anime thing, it's a Friren thing. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but all the names are German words: Friren means cold and one of the main themes is Frieren dealing with her disconnectedness. Fern is similar because Frieren is like a mother or older sister figure to her. Demons are a different story you'll see a lot of talk of them being "emotionless" but i think that is clearly not the case. As you point out here Lugner is worried, that's genuine and not a trick. Demons can feel, fear, pride, anger but all those emotions are directed inward towards themselves. Demons are hyper-individualists, to such an extent their sense of the world borders on solipsism. The only thing that matters to them is themselves. Because of this they are excellent foils to Friren who is on a quest to figure out what is important to her. One final thing that i think speaks to this is when Aura says "Himmel is long gone" This clearly angers Frieren and i think that was part of Aura's aim, to taunt, but it also speaks to her view that once someone is dead they are meaningless a non entity. It's very similar to what the child demon says in episode 7: Himmel points out the little girl she is holding hostage is the village chief's daughter and the demon says "but the village chief is gone" meaning his ability to mean anything is gone

GhostPhil

The animation of Fern's catwalk-like walk during the fight with Lügner is so clean.

Otaku's Finest

If you like facial expressions and a story, then I think you'll like My Hero Academia

Eric Loesch

Aw man, monday is a great day to upload. Cheers, thanks for the content.

Daniel Pitts

In video game terms, it'd be called MP, not HP, but yeah the idea (at least in Frieren) is that you have a certain amount of maximum Mana, and a rate of Mana accumulation.

Daniel Pitts

There is a third system of magic, we will learn about later.

Marty D

Next episode is the best in the first season

bukuwawa

Episodes 9 and 10 are usually the ones that really lock people into Frieren.

Drift3r

In regards to your question about mana. In the world of Frieren mana is basically the fundamental internal energy source that powers all magic. It functions as a finite resource similar to stamina or magical fuel. Or like you said, HP with regards to health in a video game. Except mana represents the pool of energy needed to cast a spell. Lastly, casting spells consumes mana but it's naturally regenerates overtime as you rest.

Totenkreuz

Its the best of the first ten episodes only.

Walid Barkaoui

Imagine the mana as you energy. You are an athlete that is going to play a game, therefore, you use your energy to perform actions (running for example) once you get tired your energy level is low so as mana when you use magic. Not sure if it is clear enough

Paul

You're right about Stark's resiliency. Him and Eisen have the tank roles in RPG's that are meant to take hits that would otherwise considerably damage the rest of the group. it's why Eisen's advice of, "just get up again, bro" seems silly on the surface but is a core mentality for warriors, especially if they're facing stronger opponents. They need to keep getting up to protect their teammates.

Vincent

When the intro starts depends on the episode. Usually its immediately but for dramatic tension or to set the stage they might delay it a bit. I love frieren's use of action and fight scenes. Its sparing but magnificient. The fights are filled with growth and emotional development. Stark's particularly. Whenever he says "I'm still standing" it brings a swell up inside of me. I love the concept of pushing through because you still have fight left in you. I just got a tattoo with that same symbolism and i cant wait to get my Stark one. I like your rings. Where do you get them from?

aloekayeANIME

I love this so much! I totally agree, the fight scenes are both heart-racing and deeply heart-touching for me as well. 💛 And good to know about the intros/outros. I think I'm just going to watch them all the way through consistently moving forward since they're so fun to watch anyways. Haha and ty about the rings! They're from a bunch of different places, some are my mom's, some from local artists/small shops. And ty for sharing about your tattoo, I love the symbolism, keep us posted w the stark one 🙌✨

aloekayeANIME

I didn't say in my reaction, I think I cut it, but I thought afterwards about how this reminded me of one of the Creed movies w michael b jordan where part of his conditioning was to just keep taking hits to build that ability to take on more and more damage, like you said w the tanks in RPGs... Super interesting concept, partially mind over matter maybe too? Idk all I know is I cried in this scene of Frieren lol so good

Paul

Oh yeah that’s definitely a real thing. In boxing we used to have conditioning days where we’d take turns taking body shots from our partners. Obviously not enough to hurt us but to get our nervous systems used to the pain. Its definitely prob what Stark and Eisen worked on. Im glad u got urself into anime, its a great media form. Can’t wait to see ur channel’s growth.

aloekayeANIME

You and a few other ppl on here, I'm not kidding if you wrote a thesis on Frieren/anime in general I would read it in a heartbeat!! This was great to read through, truly tysm for your thoughts. 💛 Here are my brief thoughts: > Ppl have mentioned the German linguistics embedded in the show (I wonder why German, not sure if you or others know), either way it's great insight into the show and related themes. > Regarding demons, I agree that I also don't see them as emotionless, but more so like you said, embodying malicious/negative-based emotions like the narcissism/hyperfixation on oneself you mentioned (re: hyper-individualists, solipsism), kind of reminding me of seven deadly sins something similar that demons embody. I see Frieren as such an allegory with so many evolving/deepening layers 🧅🍰 > Your notes on demons pairs interestingly with another persons comment (I think it actually was in the Demon Slayer thread), but they spoke around Buddhist and Shintoism within Japanese culture in relation to demons and what happens to souls once they've crossed over into the afterlife. The fact that you just noted that demons see the dead as meaningless/gone... I'm seeing in both shows that that's largely not the case. Thank you again for this, super fun thought-ideas to get into. Keep em coming 😊✨💫

aloekayeANIME

Watching Demon Slayer at the same time I think has allowed me to get more of a holistic view (though I'm still just at the very tip of the iceberg being so new) in terms of anime and stylistic choices/expressions. It's really amazing to see all the different ways different animes animate scenes and characters. 💫✨

aloekayeANIME

I laughed at how you named these two tropes together haha great descriptions I love the commentary you guys have

aloekayeANIME

Amazing explanation!!! Definitely helped my brain understand the concept even more deeply😊 I wrote this in response to another comment above, but if you ever write a book lmk, I'd read it in a seconddd 💫 Truly love seeing all your comments and how you've wrapped your mind around these different aspects of the show 💛

HalcyonSerenade

Flattery will get you nowhere! ... but I'll allow it. 👉👈 In all seriousness, I'm happy to share knowledge where it's appreciated. And so far, you've done a pretty good job of making me (all of us!) feel like our input is engaged with earnestly! I'm glad to have gotten here "early" with a chance to have that assurance, even if a time may come where there's too much chatter for that kind of engagement to be feasible anymore 🙂

HalcyonSerenade

Also I've considered doing reaction content myself too... I already sit on shows, movies, and games for an extra 20-30 minutes talking about my read on things, but I feel like editing all that down would be brutal 😅

Lucky

Cool detail about starks lightning strike. Its a lightning strike, so its supposed to be fast. So the animators made it so there's not a single frame of animation between the beginning of starks swing and the end
