Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Himmel allowed himself one tiny expression of his feelings but made sure it was still selfless.

Since no one already commented it… I guess it is my duty to tell you: The ring Himmel gave Frieren represents a closed bud but the one Stark gives to Fern represents an open one, which is self explanatory because Himmel and Frieren’s romance would never bloom but Stark and Fern’s actually can. Also the symbolism: the clock tower is separating Himmel and Frieren which kinda means that what is standing as a wall between their possible love is time. Ps: I’m crying too (I do every fucking time watching this ep haha and I’m a 37 yo big tattooed bearded man)

Raptor

One of my favourite episodes, here I go crying again. Especially loved learning some meaningful things in this from toher people wathcing it, on how when himmel put the ring on Frieren, basically proposing, the one thing between them is a clock tower in the background. Just as time is the only thing keeping them apart

Billy Dancel

“Sorry I let my guard down.” Frieren’s focus on detecting mana is always heightened. What is the only thing that could take her mind off of staying focused? Something or someone she is learning to be of great importance to her life. Himmel and his gift. She even woke up in the middle of the night a few times to find it. We know what a deep sleeper she is. We’ve seen little by little how much Frieren has learned about her relationship with humans in her past. At this moment she cherishes everything much more than at the start of this story.

Now go react and rewatch the first episode. My man waited 50 years only to see her in the last week of his life!! Time is so cruel.

The first big "hype" episode for most people following reaction channels is Episode 10, with Frieren vs Aura. The second big one is this one, episode 14, because of that "proposal" scene... with the dramatic irony of Himmel knowing *exactly* what all the symbols and gestures mean and using them very deliberately to express himself, while knowing that Frieren doesn't get it and probably won't get it until long after he's gone. It's one of the sweetest proposal scenes I've seen in fiction, and it's not even a real proposal 😅 I saw someone already mention the symbolism with the clocktower imagery when Himmel is on his knee -- the "only time stands between them" bit. So I won't dive deeper on that. The track that plays when Frieren begins using the "lost accessory" spell (at 23:12 in the reaction video) is called "Mirrored Lotus" on the soundtrack, and I tear up just from hearing it 🥲 ... I mean, I tear up just from hearing a *lot* of the Frieren OST, but that one gets me in a particular way 😅 This is one of those episodes that's just well-structured all on its own, starting with the birthday gift from Stark to Fern and eventually paralleling Frieren's memory of Himmel's gift to her, now recalled with a new emotional context of what the mirrored lotus symbolizes, which is info predicated by the first half. Just damn good storytelling when we hear information like that that already feels relevant to the events at hand (Fern & Stark's budding relationship) AND THEN plays into an unexpected emotional beat as Frieren recalls a memory we haven't seen yet. It's strong plotting for us the audience in the first place, but on a broader scale, it also shows us which new knowledge and events are causing Frieren to learn the things she wanted to learn about people at the very beginning of the show... without having her say aloud things like "this is what I've learned recently." We get a sense of her interiority and how she's reflecting on things just from how the episodes are structured with the flashbacks dripped in.

this show loves call backs to previous episodes and there are two good ones here. The biggest is obviously the ring Himmel gave her. You can see her looking at it throughout the show, but the big ones are here and the first episode. The shot right after they cut from the church for Himmle's funeral is of Friren looking like she remembered something, then a cut to the church bells. This is her remembering the scene from this episode where Himmel gives her the ring and you can see the scene right after the cemetery is a shot of Friren looking at the ring before she says goodbye to Heiter and Eisen. The second call back is a bit more subtle, and really more like new information giving you a bit more perspective on an old episode. Friren says here that humans have only known how to fly for 40 years. If you remember from episode 3 Quall was imprisoned for 80. So he had no idea Frieren could fly. So not only did she know that Quall's magic wasn't as effective, she also knew he would not be looking for her in the sky. she had him doubly tricked.

Another moment we all knew was coming and couldn't wait for you to see it.

Just so you know, if you need to process something you should feel free to pause and rewind to rewatch a scene. We're here for your reaction. Besides, it'll help with DMCA claims as it adds to the transformative process.

Daniel Pitts

I've watched this episode many times. I thought I wouldn't cry this time. I was wrong.

Munnin

I really enjoyed this reaction. I think sometimes silence is such a genuine reaction and I'd much prefer that than what I've seen elsewhere to this episode where an analysis or overreaction kind of breaks the scene.

Vincent

Congratulations! Youve reached another all time great Frieren episode. I just noticed it on this run thru but in the beginning of the episode Fern is mentioning the shops cuz its her birthday and she is trying to hint to Stark. I love how the memory of Himmel's proposal makes Frieren stop to gaze at the clock tower. It feels like the clock tower connects her thru time to that important event even if she isnt entirely sure why. I remember when i first watched this I really didnt like Sein. That remark about men not remembering the little things really rubbed me the wrong way but as i watched more and thought about the world of Frieren i understand what he is saying. Its callous but not as bad as i originally thought. You cant just look at a phone and know the time and date and get reminded of important events. Stark would have to count 365 days so Sein is saying men don't think about that but then after Fern confronts Stark you find out that he actually did do that. He had a plan for her birthday cuz he cares but is a coward and that unsureness of himself creeped in cuz Fern is always so harsh with him. Its even more impressive because Sein is right Stark didnt really know when his own birthday was and just this year heard about birthday presents as a ritual. Its understandable if he forgot and yet he didnt cuz he knows how important it is for Fern. I also really love the fact that Stark went to the statue of Himmel after storming off. I like he cares so much for the legacy and feels like it will give him some help in thinking about how to act. I really like Frieren's explainer about the lore around flying magic. It helps understand Humanity's magic system a bit better without being too overly contrived. The whole scene revealing the mirror lotus's meaning is amazing. Its almost as good as Himmel's scene with Frieren at the end. Fern knew how important the ring was to Frieren even if she didnt want to admit it to herself. When has Frieren ever given up her precious sleep willingly yet she does it to search the forest for the ring. Basically a needle in a haystack. Fern picking up on this immediately is very cute too now that she knows the meaning of the design. Im sure many have said it already but the clock representing the time between Himmel and Frieren is one of the most beautiful visuals in the entire show. Now you finally have the context of why Frieren was looking at that ring after Himmel's funeral in e1 and searching for a present for Stark in e12 after Fern poured the potion on her. The ring is even in the intro where Frieren and Himmel are side by side. My only complaint about this realization from Frieren at the end of the episode is that she does not start wearing the ring constantly the way Fern does with her bracelet and hair clip. My hope is that once Frieren realizes she loved Himmel she will wear the ring and it will be in the partially bloomed state that Fern's bracelet is in. All of this does make me sad to think about Himmel's line when he sees Frieren after 50 years "i never thought id see you again". Now knowing that he felt eternal love for her within their journey makes that line hit so much more. Cant wait for to see the next episode!!!

This was my favorite episode of the first season. Between reaction videos and me just watching I've seen it dozens of times, and it always makes me tear up. The clock tower between then when Himmel proposes kill me, time being the thing that separated them. I always enjoy seeing first time watchers' reactions. Himmel never married. He loved Frieren to the end.

THE CLOCKTOWER NOOOO 😭🥹 I didn't even recognize this at first I CANT... the details Frieren incorporates... you guys I'm actually ab to tear up again And that's an insanely beautiful detail with the lotus symbols too, being open and closed, ugh you guys... I wish I hadn't been recovering from my illness for this ep lol I know I would've had more to say. It was kind of tough for me to process I think, with how beautiful and sad that end scene was for me. Hope you guys enjoyed the reaction to this one still 💛💛💛

aloekayeANIME

I'm planning to rewatch all the eps again after this initial reaction, but had to go back and see what you meant w the funeral scene... guys she has the ring... I didn't know at the time... 🥹🥲

aloekayeANIME

Hahaha I will say I've also seen a lot of similarities! I think actually I saw some comments under my first ep 1 reaction on YT, some comments saying they were on the spectrum and could relate to many aspects of the show and Frieren's character, which I think makes sense with a lot of the nonverbals vs verbal styles in her communication, her hyperfixations, amongst other things. There's truly so many levels to this show and millions of ways in which ppl can see themselves and their lives in the show. 💛💫✨

Translator's note : Who cares about feelings and himmel's love and all that ? not me. What do you mean tears ? There are just some ninjas stealthily cutting onions around me. it's time to talk about japanese linguistic Idiosyncrasies. Funnily enough we're gonna talk about something that isn't very present in frieren but the little glimpses that are, are quite interesting : Suffixes. So you already noticed in demon slayer than people called tanjiro, "tanjiro-san" indeed in japanese culture when talking to someone in 90% of the time you follow their name with a suffixe. Why ? I have no idea, maybe some one else can add on to the why suffixes in japan exist in the comments. Anyway suffixes often let you understand relationship between people, they're used as a show of respect or closeness. I'll list every suffixes I know down below and provide to the best of my abilities some context as to when used : -san : this the absolute bread and butter of suffixes, it's by far the most common one and the one you'll use in most of your interaction with society. Coworkers, friend, people you just met, -san can be used in a lot of situations. it's not to distant or cold and also very respectful (often you'll also use -san for older siblings "ani-san" and parents "otto-san" "oka-san"). You can't go wrong with -san. -kun : a common one BUT used for people you're closed with. For exemple, if they were to use suffixes Himmel and Heiter who grew up together would easily used -kun with each other. -kun is considered more familiar and less "respectful" so even tho it's common it can be seens as rude if you use it for like a coworker or a person you might see a lot but you don't know very well. You'll see that when you watch anime with highschool kids you might hear name-kun a lot more. -chan : a special one that is a little specific. it can often be used for kids, you'll call a lot of young kids -chan and for people you are really close with (sometimes it can be used for siblings, close friends, lovers etc...). -chan is somewhat very personnal and considered a "cute" suffixes. Let's say you use -chan with your significant other, if you talk about them to some one else you most likely use -san like "ho I asked SO-san this" and used -chan only when adressing them directly or when talking with people who are close to you. It's kinda like if you had a pet name for your partner like honey, when you're talking with coworkers about how your partner did this and that you're not saying "my honey did this" you'd most likely say "my partner did this". So let's say i'm dating Paul, i'd call Paul : Paul-chan but when talking about paul to my coworker I would refers to him as Paul-san. -sama : A less common one, very respectful, can be used to talk to people "higher" than you or people you atleast want to show a very high level of respect, like let's say there is a king or a political leader named paul, people would refer to him as Paul-sama. Or a boyfriend meeting his GF parent for the first and wanting to do good impression could use -sama to refer to them. What's interesting is that Fern use -sama a lot with freiren and stark (that's why sub show her calling stark "mister stark" because she say stark-sama). In fern case I don't think she put stark on a pedestal or anything but it's still show she's a very respectful, proper person that has been raised in a little bit of maybe an old-school way (she was raised by an important priest after all, by the end of his life Heiter was like a cardinal or something is the goddess's cult) and doesn't know a lot of people her age so she kinda use by default the suffixes she use with the two most important person in her life her second father and her master hence the "default use" of -sama. -dono : kinda of the same use has sama but with maybe a tiny bit even more reverence because it's a little bit more old school and was most likely used by samourais referencing their masters so there is a bit of a more intense vibe associated to -dono. You might hear it in demon slayer. -ue : very upper class old school one used in upper class old shcool family to refers to older siblings, parents, aunt, uncle etc... Understanding the use of suffixes in japanese is to me big advantage when watching anime because it allow you to very rapidly define and understand relathionship and rapport between characters . There is also twist and jokes made by twisting the rules of suffixes usage. For exemple an antagonist could belittle the hero by suddenly using -chan to refers to him making it seems like he has no respect whatsoever or consider the hero a child. There is other kinda suffixes that are also words and all but that is for another time I feel like there is already A LOT of information on most common suffixes. But anyway if you can when you see and hear new characters talking try to identify is they use suffixes and if they do you might gain insightful knowledge about them.

Thank you for your thoughts and I'm really so happy you enjoyed the reaction ✨💫 I agree, something that's been so beautiful and fun becoming a part of this community within the anime/reaction space is you guys teach me so many things ab different aspects and themes of the show, in ways like symbolism/writing/cultural details. I've mentioned this before, but I love going down rabbitholes/reddit portals ab shows and movies so while I can't do that (to protect myself from spoilers for my first reaction), it's SO nice having you guys with all the insightful perceptive comments. They give me life 💛🙌

aloekayeANIME

So glad you are all here with mee!! 💛🥹 I do kind of wish I would've known this was a big ep (I would've held off recording to when I wasn't sick.. but then lowkey that would've swayed my reaction too so maybe not). My brother was like I didn't want to say anything and ruin your genuine reaction on it, which I get. Glad you guys still enjoyed it 💛 But moving forward now that I have some help hopefully I won't have to record semi-sick anymore 🙌💫✨

MishkaTho

Don’t worry about it, it was a nice reaction haha. Hope you’ll feel better soon 🙂

aloekayeANIME

I WILL cry again @HalcyonSerenade lol this is making me emotional thinking ab it 🥲🥹 Still can't get over the clock tower, what an insane nuance to this scene. And also w the "Mirrored Lotus" soundtrack like I'm convinced they just thought of absolutely everything in this show hahaha. No but like you said (and I saw some other ppl say this too), I think soon I'm going to have my own anime OPs/EDs playlist while I'm relaxing/at the gym/need to cry LOL I love the music production/soundtracks of both Frieren and DS so much. 🎼🎧 Your last paragraph, something that is just time and time again so beautiful and moving for me is the scene progression and storytelling of Frieren. 🩵🤍 I really appreciate your use of the 'interiority' that we get for Freiren from this storytelling. Beautiful way to put that and I agree. Ty for the insights, always love your comments!! 💫✨💛

aloekayeANIME

We're in this together 🥲😭🥹 You're in good company 💛 Honestly tho I can see myself watching Frieren for the rest of my life, and having it deeply impact me in both the exact same and even totally new ways with each watch. Thank you for being here with me on my journey ✨💫

aloekayeANIME

This is a really good idea! 💛 I said in other comments, tbh I'm a little upset I recorded this a bit under the weather (and I'd actually recorded 3 other ep reactions before this one, so I just felt like my reaction here wasn't as animated as you guys have usually seen me). But it happens and that's ok.. Moving forward tho, I appreciate that insight, as in if I need a sec or want to rewatch to reprocess, that could be helpful and something to keep in patreon edits for sure since you guys are more ok w my longer/deeper dives on things ✨💫

aloekayeANIME

Thank you so much for saying this 💛 I said in a few other comments I was lowkey mad I was a little sick and stunned/not speaking as much in this ep. But truly I didn't know how to process that scene in the moment I think.. I have a million thoughts now ofc haha (which next week's e15 I've added a lot of reflections/thoughts on ep 14 in the intro lol. My brother watched this before it posted. He told me after I'd recorded like "this is a super big ep" and I got worried my reaction wasn't 'good enough' but he was like "no it's a really good reaction, it's just not as 'crazy' as some of your other reactions or even other reactors I've seen who go over the top on this one." He watches a lot of reactors, I don't really and I don't like to bc I don't want to fall into a comparison trap etc. Anyways I digresssss haha but truly I'm glad you enjoyed. I adored this episode 🩵🤍💜❤️

aloekayeANIME

I really appreciate your insights here!! So wonderful reading your thoughts on Stark + Fern here ❤️💜 as well as Sein. 🤎 It's been interesting seeing how the characters are built out in anime (and Frieren specifically ofc), and even some of the 'tropes' I'm learning about... (not to switch shows, but it'll tie back) I've seen a lot of tropes in Demon Slayer that were jarring to me at first (like eps 1 and 3 had those 'be a man'/dont show weakness or emotions tropes but I understand in the storyline of Tanjiro's character why those themes and pressures were incorporated, and they are very real in society/help shape who Tanjiro is in the face of that). With Sein I vaguely felt some of this too like you said, but I think that they all balance in a really wonderful way between all the male (and female) characters. I love all of your points here, you've picked up on so many lovely nuances in the show I really appreciate 💛 It made me laugh reading 'bc when does Frieren ever give up her sleep' lol youre so right. Your end points about ep 1 ("i never thought id see you again") actually is making me quite emotional right now, the harsh themes of time and love are really hitting me right now. 🥲🙃 Thank you for all these beautiful insights 💛💫✨

Twisted Glass

Frieren's "I'm used to losing things" line in this episode is (at least to me) pretty heartbreaking, because I interpret it to mean she's isn't just used to losing objects, but also people, which makes sense given her 1000+ year age, but it makes it such a sad interpretation of a line said in passing. Then again, her saying it so casually makes it sadder still, because she knows nobody would understand even if she was to explain it. Because how could they? Maybe I'm reading into it too much, who knows.

DoktorEvil

Heiter's words about pretending to be an adult just kill me, every time. It's like he was speaking directly to me. The writing on the "proposal" scene is perfect, because it avoids a couple of pitfalls. If Himmel had told Frieren what his gesture meant, and she'd said no, it risks making her look bad in the eyes of the audience. But if he'd told her and she'd said yes, it risks making Himmel look bad, because we know she'd be agreeing to something she doesn't really understand... and we know Himmel knew she doesn't too. It risks making him look selfish and manipulative. Having him remain silent shows he understands her deeply, and won't pressure her, but still lets him live out what his heart wants. It couldn't have been done better.

bukuwawa

excellent. never stop reacting.

Westy

This episode never fails to get me emotional. It's fantastic.

RegorLu

Yeah. After EP13 reaction finished. ME: "So the next is EP14 hun.... THE DAMN CLOCKTOWER AND THE RING"

Drift3r

Even if you're reading into it to much I like the nuance of your idea.

2026-10-18 16:00 My wild guess as to why the Japanese language tend to use suffixes for names is because their language is built around formality, politeness and hierarchy. In fact, after watching the mini-series "Shogun" the formality, politeness and hierarchy built into the language made a lot of sense to me because you really would not want to speak casually to a samurai, or a noble man or woman of any type, if you were a regular common person. Not if you valued your head staying attached to the rest of your body.

It is very sad to think about Himmel but I also know for sure that he would never once want Frieren to be with him if she didnt want it and unfortunately at the end of his life there wasnt a moment that she did. Himmel will gladly wait another 30 years for Frieren to realize and another elf's lifetime for them to finally be together in heaven

Rewatching this series, with these contexts, and some that are still yet to come, really changes a lot of scenes. I saw in another comment, someone already lead you to rewatch the scene in the first episode, when she is touching the ring. Maybe Frieren didn't know what what the ring meant when she picked it up, but she definitely knows what it means by the start of this episode. When Fern mentions the meaning, Frieren looks away and tries to play it off as if she doesn't know, but that is not a normal response of new knowledge from Frieren, but instead a way of hiding the way it makes her feel. This means at some point after being given the ring, she learned its significance. There are numerous times the ring is shown besides the first episode. Knowing what it means, and what it means to Frieren, really changes those moments.

Here to Give genuinely good recommendations as a veteran anime watcher: Like romance? = horimiya(9.5). Unique storytelling = Durarara(10/10). A truly unappriciated show: Shinsekai Yori(to the new world)9.7/10. like space? = Kanata no astra(astra lost in space)(10/10). very relatable show to some of us = Relife+ova(10/10. Apothecary diaries 10/10. A place further than the universe 9/10. just to name a few. truly hope you'll be the one to watch some of these, some of these are hardly reacted to at all and needs it badly

I've been waiting to comment, and here I am crying once again to this amazing show! I reacted to this on my channel, and now this is like the 8th? reaction I've watched, I highly suggest later down the line in your own down time to watch someone elses reaction, or show the show to a friend in person! it's sooo wild what you see on a 2nd, 3rd, 4th watch. It sounds nuts, but there is just SO much you miss on the 1st time through. Anywho, absolutely loving these reactions. Ep 12 and 14 make me cry every single time. There will be more of that to come :)

Kyle Taggart

Oh your brother is helping, that's good! one thing I will say, its good you're watching multiple in one sitting. Watching one at a time is tough, and sometimes things are two parters. I believe the last 2 episodes are best back to back as well. (of season 1)

Kyle Taggart

Im realizing I may have commented this before now, but now that I know you have a brother and you're loving anime, I cannot stress enough the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood should without a doubt be the next anime you react to. If you brother hasn't seen it, or hell even if he wants to, he should react with you to it. If you both haven't, I volunteer as an expert and guide for the jaw dropping experience lol. Anyways, back to Frieren!
