season 3 is october 2027 so we only have to wait a year 😔😔😔😔

Otaku's Finest

Best BELIEVE I'm waiting for Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri for these reactions. I'm enjoying your experience in enjoying anime. Anime is my favorite style of show and story telling.

WanderingBecauseLostLol

This show renewed my childhood interest in paying attention to local trees and plants. It's fun finding out exactly what everything is, what's native and what was brought here and from where, and why.

Otaku's Finest

The way S2 ended has me beyond hyped for S3. DS S4 had me feeling the same way.

Dingo

Wait till you see the ending for season 2

We have entered cour 2 of Season 1 of Frieren! So it's time for an explanation of cours. Japanese production blocks for anime (and probably other serial media, but I don't have that knowledge!) are around 1/4 of a year, or 13 weeks each, roughly corresponding to calendar seasons. (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter; 52 weeks in a year, divided by 4, into 13-week "seasons") These are known as "cours," a term borrowed from French media. Production+broadcast contracts for anime are usually negotiated with these cours as the basic time block. Since episodes are also released once per week, a "1 cour" anime is usually 13 episodes -- 1 episode per week over the course of a 13-week broadcast season. They may also be 12 episodes or sometimes even only 11 episodes. The word "season" kinda differs in what it implies production wise between different industries. I'll skip the history lesson for now -- in the current times, you can think of one "season" of an anime as a single "production chunk" of the show, where production and broadcast is continuous. (Though there are exceptions now where they take a "break" in the middle of a season and pick it up later, so it kinda feels arbitrary to however the producer wants to label it 😅) For example, Season 1 of Demon Slayer lasted 2 cours: that's two blocks of 13-episodes each, for a total of 26 episodes for that season. Incidentally, contracts with animation studios and music groups to make the OPs and EDs are also usually negotiated per cour, so we'll often see either the OP, the ED, or somtimes *both* change when we pass into a new cour, even in the middle of a continuous season. Since a cour is 12 or 13 episodes, we usually see the OP/ED shift on episode 13 or 14. (This doesn't *always* happen, but that's the pattern) You may be thinking "but wait, why did we get a new OP for Frieren on episode 17??" That's because the first four episodes of Frieren S1 were released on the same day! So week 1 of its first cour has episodes 1-4; week 2 had episode 5; week 3 had episode 6, etc... which means the last week of the cour had episode 16. So episode 17 is the first episode of the 2nd cour, instead of the usual episode 14. It's all offset by 3 because the first week had an extra 3 episodes. (Edit: slight correction to my understanding: upon broadcast, episodes 1-4 were released as a big single chonky episode. Later for streaming services, it was split into the 4 episodes as currently labeled, and the other episode numbers were shifted accordingly as I described. I wasn't around for braodcast, so all I know is it's an oddly-long season due to a 3-episode extra length because of an extra long premier 🤷‍♂️) You pointed out in the video that the ED is different, but the song is the same. This is an interesting case where the cour 2 ED is the *second verse* of the same song ("Anytime, Anywhere" by Milet) which I don't think I've ever seen done elsewhere. But I'll take it, because I love that song 😄 There's a lot to say about this, including how it dramatically affects the pacing of adaptations as the writers have to try to make story arcs fit nicely into 12-13 episode chunks, which the manga may not have been written for. And how the modern streaming era has affected how studios approach production of seasons, especially for popular shows, and how that affects filler content and pacing decisions. But that's a talk for another long post 😅

Soushi Typhon

This ED is the same song as the first ED, it's just the 2nd half of the full song.

Silver

Really had to call them a QUARTET didn’t you? Wow, going to go have a cigarette and drink in honor of Sein now being gone thanks to you!

Tyler Marcum

I'm very excited to see it animated

HalcyonSerenade

The editor(s) should add in an "episodes since Kaye last cried" counter and just keep it at 0 😂

Little Wing

Since the original manga is currently on hiatus, no one knows how their journey will end, but this episode seemed to get right to the heart of what this story is trying to convey. Also, the ending animation was more moving than any previous episode. It was as if Freiren had set out on her journey to Ende just to speak with Fern.

Munnin

I too was thrown off, the first time I watched Frieren, by how fast Sein goes off on his own. Your thoughts on when it is the right time for a friendship is a good read into it. I also think that understanding the motivations of those around you is a part of this second cours.

NEW INTRO & OUTRO!!!!! I love that the party gets stuck in a blizzard so they have to live with Gorilla Warrior (Kraft) for 6 months in e12 then in e17 they get stuck in a blizzard and live with Goatee Priest (Sein) for a month. Longer for the long lived elf, shorter for the human priest. Its a cute bit of symbolism connecting the 2 ancient heroes. Just start dating already! I genuinely think this is why the wrote Sein leaving the party cuz he would have told Frieren that Himmel was in love with her for his whole life and its clear Frieren was in love with him. Sein hasn't been privy to too much of Frieren's flashbacks of Himmel and I think he is mature enough to have clocked it very quickly but the mangaka probably wants Frieren to realize her love for Himmel closer to when the party gets to Ende. Aaaaand of course they meet a hot, single older woman the second Sein leaves the party 😆 Stark gathering herbs with Frieren mirrors Fern and Frieren trying to find blue moon weed in e2. They both meet the flower turtles and end with them seeing something beautiful. This episode is all about parallels.

GhostPhil

Frieren is such a Gremlin Granny it's always so funny how she acts :D

Tucculent

small correction, episodes 1-4 are all technically episode 1 and episode 16 is episode 13 but they split them up for streaming services which added the additional 3 count.

HalcyonSerenade

Fair enough, I've edited+added the clarification!

Ok, so, first of all. I've been watching your reactions for a while and I love them. This is probably gonna a little bit longer write up so excuse my dyslexia being all over the place. I know a lot of people already recommended Violet Evergarden as a follow-up anime after you are done with s2 and I saw you mention in it recent poll. The biggest mistake most reaction channels do is not allowing themselves to watch what they want. I understand you want to grow, therefore go with what community wants but leave yourself like a single slot when you decide. When it comes to Frieren, it's the peak when it comes to show dont tell kind of stories. And as funny as it may sound, the best thing you can do after finishing Frieren is watch again 5 times. I'm not kidding, the amount if detail you didnt know were there is insane to the point of getting emotional every 5 minutes. So if you feel like watching something but you dont want to without reacting then Frieren is perfect for that. All of that being said, watch what you want and what you enjoy and dont be afraid to drop show you dont like and add some you think are up your alley. Enjoy the peak that this show is up to next and stay safe :)

Tucculent

Oh yeah! you can definitely watch the Music Video now for OP1, Yuusha (The Brave) by Yoasobi. It's all Frieren visuals.

Ruyko 6

I really like the way you think. You're super smart and observative, but at the same time compassionate. Really enjoying those reactions

Aethercat21

Did you notice that this show takes it's time to show the similarities between Stark and Himmel? Like in this episode, Stark's thoughts on how people, not just kids need support directly parallels what Himmel says. I'm not sure if it's to showcase specifically Stark's heroic qualities, or (in my opinion is far more interesting) if it's to show that Himmel's legacy, his way of thinking, his; in modern terms, lifestyle, has passed on through the ages. Even through decades of peace; there are young people that embody his conviction.

We have entered part 2 of season 1! (It’s essentially two parts) When you watch other anime, most of the time they have multiple OP/ED’s. Frieren’s are truly special, and even now after seeing this show many many times now, the OP/ED’s floor me. Like, tears pretty much every time. Especially this ED… Sometimes, reactors hold off on watching them until a recommended point, which I think is sometimes prudent. However, if you don’t super duper over analyze them until characters you don’t know finally get revealed in show, then I think it’s fine. It’s kind of like seeing a movie preview, thinking they showed everything, and then not remembering things until you finally see them in show. Frieren, I don’t think is a show you should skip them, and I was waiting for your surprise to see the switch! Sein is the man, and time will tell if he returns. However now we enter into the Mage Exam arc!

Raptor

I just love the character development of someone who kind of skips the opening credits to begin with (I was the same). To almost doing a deepdive on them. So cool to see someone else going through almost literally the same journey. Lovely reaction as always

MishkaTho

I can’t wait for you to see OP3 🥲😭

aloekayeANIME

New term unlockedd ✨ Never in my life have I heard of a ‘cour' -- this is excitinggg!! That’s so interesting about the french origins and seasonal aspect to the production structure. Makes sense that the OPs + EDs are also negotiated based on the cours. You’re exactly right lol I literally was like ‘why randomly in ep 17 are we getting all this now?’ But learning it’s a Japanese media (largely anime-specific) thing on top of Frieren having released those first 4 together) all makes more sense. SO cool and something I’ll have to look out for in the future with other series too!! I can’t even begin to understand yet without looking into manga myself, just how that all would play into the shows as well. Would love to get into the manga eventually tho idek where to read those haha Love you guys ty for helping me learn all the fun new things in anime!! ✨💛💫

aloekayeANIME

Glad you related 💛 That always plays in my head about ppl being in our lives for 'seasons', maybe we're meant to exchange lessons for a short time then be on our way, etc. I will say tho I am still having a tough time with Sein being gone just like that tho 😔 We'll see what the second cours (new vocab word 😊) brings... So glad you guys are here!! 💫🙌✨

aloekayeANIME

AYY so glad you're here!!! ✨🙌💫 It makes me smile to read you're enjoying my first ever reactions too! I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have you all with me on this journey 💛

aloekayeANIME

OK 😭🥲 hahaha actually not a bad idea lmaoooo

aloekayeANIME

Thank you for such kind words in your comment!! First off I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying the reactions so much, it always makes me smile so much reading comments like this ✨💫 And I also really appreciate your kindness and awareness around my own personal experience in watching anime for the for time (aka watching what I'm genuinely excited to watch). I definitely think once I fully finish this first round of reactions, I am going to rewatch Frieren again all cozied up in my bed 🤍 That being said too tho, I genuinely am extremely excited to watch the three I put in the poll, honestly all of the suggestions I've seen in comments, I'm just like I wish I could watch them all I'm so excited, it's been the most fun experience for me💛💛💛 Ty for the love

aloekayeANIME

This is such a lovely comment, I haven't seen anyone talk ab this specifically yet 💛 I totally get what you mean, going back to some of the very first themes I know I learned from Frieren, taking our time and experiencing the little things in the world. 🤍 Lol fun lil thing this reminded me of, I actually downloaded a bird app last time I was outside the US... I was like WHAT ARE ALL THESE NEW BIRDS I MUST KNOW hahaha. But it was such a fun way to keep me in the moment and in nature when I was exploring somewhere new. Ty for the comment ✨💛💫

aloekayeANIME

😭😅 WHY DO I KEEP DOING THAT it's like I can't help it fr lmaoooo I'll keep trying 🙃😁

aloekayeANIME

This is incredibly kind, thank you so much it means the world ✨💛💫 I'm so happy you're here and that you enjoy the reactions!!

aloekayeANIME

I love that you did the same that's so funny to hear!! 💫 I definitely find myself wanting to deepdive on them now, same with DS too. I imagine this will be the case for all future animes now haha So happy you're enjoying the reactions, ty for being here ✨💛💫

aloekayeANIME

Ty for these thoughts!! I feel like I have been seeing more and more similarities between Stark and Himmel like you said you've seen too! I've noticed how much he looks up to him I think since we met Stark, but it's so interesting you mention these parallels in their behaviors and how they view life. He's like a blend of eisen and himmel to me at this moment I think?? Ty for the comment, so glad you're here!! 💛✨💫

I'll explain the ED but it's pretty sad so skip this if you don't want the feels. Because Frieren will outlive everyone, it's basically her lying over Fern's grave the same way she used to lie on her lap when Fern was alive, followed by her journey to Ende to see her again.

Jace

The ending song is a call and response song and for my head canon i see the first ED as Himmel calling out to Frieren, and the second ED as Frieren responding now that she is opening up/understanding her emotions.
