Already it seemed new bands had given up on albums and almost exclusively record singles, but now on TikTok the goal of writing music has gotten even smaller than a single song. I’m a middle school teacher and the kids really can’t read. It isn’t just not getting context clues. Many of the 11-14 year olds in my classes don’t have a basic knowledge of phonics and the solution offered is to have them listen to their readings using a google chrome extension. There is no phonics instruction, which is really what they need. If you have an iphone and a partner or a friend you can set up app limits and also general downtime and have them set up the override password. For example i have 30 minute limits on social media and 45 minute limits on news apps, and from 10pm to 11am i cant use any apps. Its been good!

Being 25 is so strange because both gen z and millennials are very unrelatable to me. I had VHS tapes and a discman as a kid, but I was also 11 when Instagram came out, so the modern era of app-based social media sort of appeared throughout my adolescence. The idea of being born into a world with these media platforms already existing is INSANE to me, I truly can't comprehend what that must be like. I got an iPod touch when I was 11 and, in retrospect, I do not think my parents should have been on board with that but we just honestly didn't know yet. I can't imagine knowing how addicted I am to my phone and then giving a CHILD access to the same thing anyway.

My kids were born in 2010 and 2014, and it was endlessly entertaining to watch my youngest try to select things on the Apple TV interface by touching the tv screen. It looks like a giant iPad, why isn’t it working?? lol I have a theory that the kids who will know nothing but a post-social media world will not necessarily fare as bad or worse than we have. Older generations are to varying degrees aliens to this world, but they aren’t so maybe they are immune to how nutty it makes people? I mean, the people on TikTok who make me weep for humanity are much older than the kids born post TikTok. It remains to be seen what it will look like once those born in the last 10 years are old enough to be solidly using social media. I could be very wrong!

I noticed when my kids started their first full year back to school in person, fall of 2021 I think, that the pandemic fucked with their development more than people had anticipate. They were both in elementary school still. This is what I’ve had teachers and family members who are teachers tell me as well.

It’s so cheesy but I really did feel like I was talking to him like we used to 20 years ago when we first met.
