Creamish

yay, last ep was one of my faves you guys have ever done.

Ryan Coleman

Gonna listen to this episode about tripping and stare at the sun

honky

Be careful plz

Ryan Coleman

Too late I'm blind but my other senses are way better now

Karl Childers

i stared directly at the 2017 eclipse and i'm fine it was cool i recommend staring directly at an eclipse

Ryan Coleman

It actually got me sorta buzzed last time that's why I'm doing it again today

Karl Childers

in 2017 i drove up to wyoming to see it in totality, also took acid, was an awesome experience in the truest sense of the word. unfortunately im nowhere near the eclipse path this year.

Ryan Coleman

This is one of the few instances in life where I wish I could still do acid

Alex

Loneliness is a byproduct of the individual world as it's been forced upon us through economic and societal forces. I don't believe it's something just naturally manifesting throughout our development through time. It's a human construct, a choice.

Tom Clarke

Congrats for being second

Blank

YC I see your restraint at not playing a clip of Mr. Crowley and I respect it

foul tarnished

Erik Davis is such a tremendous guest, warm and knowledgeable

NYCM&AHole

I saw Waymo than you did

Onion Billy

What is brace’s favorite ship to visit

hole

the greatest drug of all?....Love...call your mother

Dylan Scott

this is extremely boring but per the intro, fwiw at least at ber(zer)keley, they do award a BA in CS as it is in the "college of letters & sciences" (which also includes the math and science departments so you also get a BA in physics for example). but there is a larger EECS degree in the college of engineering that awards a BS

Tryg

Sometimes it's hard to know where a Simon and Peggy conversation in 'Dinner in America' ends and a cold open with Liz and Brace begins...

Tryg

Love these two episodes. MORE WEIRDNESS! :-)

ploob

I see you, I hate you

Blank

, you are valid

Stevie

What kind of tea did you have Liz? X

Michael S. Judge

Lawrence is the only good place in Kansas, but it's also the place you're most likely to find a room full of dog shit in a crusty punk house

Michael S. Judge

You can go to William Burroughs's old place and see where he wore a bare patch in the grass by putting collars on his cats and walking them back & forth like 10 feet at a time, while holding the leashes + a vodka Coke in one hand and a giant revolver in the other. He did this every day for 17 years

Michael S. Judge

basically we managed to recreate the structure and function of VALIS, but instead of injecting the living lógos that's supposed to redeem an entire cosmos which is the concretized mourning for a dead woman who lost her mind, it injects the ashen corpse of Sama'el the Blind Idiot god, and how would anybody know the difference without comparison

Return of The Mac 2nite

That ending bit really sends this whole conversation down the river. Oh yeah Henry David Thoreau with Californian characteristics, that’ll save us 🤣

Shfifty_five

Davis seems like a cool guy but his discussion here is very vibes based. Because he's most interested in cultural aesthetics, there's a lot of literal / surface level analysis. He doesn't really go into WHY "things went the way they did".

glenn mohre

Repo Man also addresses the idea of trends in popular weirdness interest : Otto: You eat a lot of acid, Miller, back in the hippie days? Miller: I'll give you another instance: you know how everybody's into weirdness right now?...

mimi

Iowa mentioned 🫨

H

Little too much California apologia from Mr Davis there in the end

Karl Childers

really appreciate this interview, refreshing to hear a conversation taking a sincere look at the meaning of drug experiences themselves rather than taking the typical sterile clinical & legal perspective

Sam Bondurant

Hey Liz when can we expect Draymond to become the permanent third mic once he’s booted off the warriors this offseason?

Michael S. Judge

It's time for the Steph + Bron + Dray teamup. One last ride. Klay takes 6th man money, good vet minimums to chase a ring, few young guys like Kuminga and TJD and Podziemski to push the pace. I'm not predicting it, but it would be the cosmically just outcome

Robert Sayre

Check out "Secret History of Silicon Valley" by Steve Blank on YouTube for a good discussion of the post-WWII arrangement of government, corporations, and universities.

Johan Stefonski

I listened to this ep as a person on Facebook Marketplace desperately tried to get me to open a scam email. I'm deep in the vortex.

smokedpaprika.777

Awesome episode. The bit about loneliness has been stirring around in my mind and it was validating to hear someone talk about it out loud!!!

Donnie Ka

For what ? To watch LBJ struggles getting one ring even with a heavyweight team again ?

daniel sauve

I too once discovered a dog shit room in a midwestern home while on tour. These are the episodes that validate my subscription, you know your audience.

Shiv

This is how I am also learning about “Cerebral Valley” and I’m fucking pissed

Shiv

“Uber the regular”

Shiv

If you make us wait a whole year for another D/C 3 mic 🏀 ep imma cry

Shiv

i mean, sounds fine

brodie

The twin peaks music fading in and out during the short mention of Lynch was A+.

Axel H.

Some of the PKD/internet analysis reminds me of Serial Experiments Lain and the Wired. Just a weeb observation, but wondering if there’s a connection there.

Mitch

Love the kind of Ray Manzarek style bass line on the reprised theme track.

Selecao9

Agreed. I for sure think Chiaki J. Konaka (script writer) is inspired by Dick. Big Lovecraft fan too.

Alexandria

Is this still available?

Jay-Z Pants

Great conversation. Thanks for the reminder to read Valis 👾

Robert Ditty

Californians have all of the arrogance and cruelty of the East Coast but none of the grit that is developed in the Winter. Love, From Portland

Eric

Months ago I remember daydreaming the True Anon PKD episode, and now here it is.

DoItForTheGramsci

One of the best episodes i've heard. loved these last 2. a great mix of drugs and their relationship to society outside of the normal speak you hear about it, and just sociology ramblings that go off. Love it. Erik is great.

SF

Nah it’s fine.

SF

Grow up.

H

Its true - a lot of California’s prosperity is based on exploitation of agricultural workers in the middle.

Jed Levin

Did you guys suddenly get federal arts funding for the show’s music budget? Nice work on the last few episodes!

Nick Derella

I dumpstered the Exegesis from a former librarian who passed away in my neighborhood. Even more excited to get into it after this interview

Anon Ibid

Like the old man in William Burroughs dream said, "What if we lost and this is what happens when you lose?"

This is how Janis Joplin feels

Valis is fantastic but the last two books in that trilogy never come up. I remember them not being as good; maybe that’s why

Nick

This guy’s voice is very similar to the voice of that reclusive author Brace likes

Ashley Naftule

The middle one- Divine Invasion- is definitely the weakest of the three. But I would strongly recommend the final volume- The Transmigration of Timothy Archer- to all Dickheads and those who are Dick-curious. Dick was always bad at writing women, but Timothy Archer is the one novel he wrote with a female main protagonist whose actually written as a three-dimensional, nuanced, flawed character as opposed to his usual I-just-got-divorced take on writing women.

Arielle Curtin

Prop 14 baby. CA is home to most reactionary real-estate based Americans on earth.

BeanCurd

the best people I've met in CA are not trying to be thought leaders or rock stars. I have a lot of affection for places like Pomona, Fresno, Sacramento

Rene

A good companion piece to episode 340 I think

John

Not sure if sanfracisco mindset will save us from climate change considering all the tech bros are buying estates in new zealand. Great episode all the same 👍

consumedmind

Thank you so much for this episode, long time dickhead over here :)

Dean Watson

When I was in elementary school some new kids moved in a block over from us and my mom said I should go over there and hang out with them and long story short yeah ; they also had a room full of dogshit. I never went back.

Chris

All this talk about how weird California is reminds me of how weird the west coast is as a whole. I’m from California and lived in Oregon for about 5 years, and I remember talking to an older woman in Eugene about how she came to Oregon from California in the 60s because California was too commercial and not weird enough. I also found out while living there that Oregon was admitted to the US as a whites-only state, and they only began to allow non-white people to live there in the 1960s. In my opinion the Portland woke stereotype is a reaction to that fact, while not exactly addressing the underlying issues of racism in the state

ultraviolet sasquatch

I've read ~18 PKD novels and two short story collections. It's been years though. Time to read more.

Malika Nash

“Everything looks a lot like San Francisco. Which is really weird to me, a person who grew up in San Francisco. The soft cultural power coming out of California gets hardened by the technology that’s also being perfected here.” 💎💎💎 LIZ 💎💎💎

Eric

Stay on the road. Keep off moors. Beware of the black iron prison

Jordan

grit = unparalleled apathy / level of drug addiction not known to others

Mario Puig

Isnt the Empathy Machine or whatever from androids/sheep similar to twitter or something?

A Loon

Agree on Transmigration, and that Divine Invasion is weak. Would recommend Radio Free Albemuth as an alternate 3rd Valis novel. Sort of a prequel/alternate to the others.

Grenadine Vetch

Always nothing but high praise!!!! U speak right to me every single time

Internet jones

Actually I was sorta bummed you guys moved to New York actually lol, just cause you guys were so VERY VERY native Californian in a way that is pretty special, still forgive you guys but even as a midwest person I have mad respect for native Californians and New Yorkers even, cause there sorta is a culture there even if it’s dying

Dylan

I highly appreciate the California and Lawrence, KS attention just a few minutes in

GWAR-a-Lago

I'm about 90% certain I know exactly what house in Lawrence he's talking about
