We hit the books and head back to school, checking out a couple of university encampments and comparing what we saw to what columnists and politicians are saying. Then we talk Israel, deflections, and students and donors as customers.

They just closed the public areas at my university preemptively and sent an email saying “we’ll arrest you”. Great stuff

ploob!

Take my wife please!

Have a wonderful day everyone

Jon Juan Travis Hallowell

Students at Pitt are trying to get the chancellor to engage in talks related to the $400k spent a year to lobby for military contracts, and to disclose the portfolio of the $5.5 billion endowment. Both Pitt and CMU are glorified weapons development plants, even the self driving car research done at CMU is explicitly a DOD project. Engineering students(including me) are more guilty of war crimes than the average combat soldier.

Hal Warren

TrueAnon tip line was a ruse... I was at the GWU encampments for a few minutes for a couple of days. Nothing like what is being reported. Probably the only decent people in DC are there. The rest are careerist scum!

Liam Farley

Columbia grad student union member here ty for coming up Brace, the right wing reporting has been driving me insane because it's all so blatantly untrue

Reyden Weis

All timer cold open, wow

Glenn Li Chun

Reports of snipers at Ohio State as well

Pat

Love listening to my favorite (((podcast))) every Monday morning

Pat

Was excited to hear a mention of the Indiana U protest only for Liz and Brace to both call it Iowa lmao

DarylBarenziah

My Mischling test scale Jewish blood (2%) was screaming anti semetic in my brain over this goddanged cold open. I officially have to stop supporting the True Anon Shia militia I’ve been organizing with over the last 52 months

aarinsanity

I think the encampments are gay 🫠🌈

Null_null

Learned a lot about the UC schools and their shift toward producing human capital in Palo Alto by Malcolm Harris. Great book. Surprised he was never on the pod.

Bella

As a midwest state university student this was much needed. Thank you!!

Harrison Holmes

As a midwesterner, the way you just slandered Indiana is crazy 😂 The snipers were at Indiana University lmao

Karl Childers

the segment about the israeli chemical weapon is terrifying, it seems they are using the "poop smell" both to provide a plausible cover story for spraying people and also to make it sound silly/harmless, while the actual weapon is a pharmeceutical mix of slow acting poison and abortefactant and god knows what else

sandragl

Please come to CUNY and visit the CCNY encampment! One of our demands is what Liz talked about, subsidized public college education!!

Jordan

Get the sense Liz is a big David Harvey head… the uc school system college and public is very allegorical to the mission/project of privatization post war USA

LPO Crane Jefferson

Was at CUNY/CCNY yesterday while the car caravan came in. I tell you it felt like one of the safest and community based places I've ever been to. You are aware of the police presence but it still shocks you how blatantly ludicrous the media is making these encampments seem. The encampments snap you right back to the focus of all this and that is the Palestinian resistance. Long live the student intifada!

Casey

NYC people show support at the CUNY solidarity encampment at City College!

Tater

Hi, student Columbia here, just sent out by admin: Columbia has just announced that it will mass evict and suspend the hundreds of students in the encampment who do not leave by 2pm. Students and supporters: flood the campus to keep the University from its disgusting plan to lock students out of their homes. We have paused negotiations until Columbia comes to the table in good faith, without the threat of violence. If the University does not come forward with real, concrete proposals that address our demands, we will have no choice but to escalate the intensity of protest on campus.

B

I know it’s wrong but I cannot get enough of Brace’s voice these past few eps

Jay Robinson

great episode. College must be more valuable than learning excel shortcuts. ✊

Major Pisano

“Could you repeat that? My shits all fucked up.”

Back Bench Pizza LLC

I know he’s a little annoying but it’s pretty fucked up to throw matty matheson under the bus like that

George P

From Peter Dale Scott’s The Road to 9/11: “As late as 1970, 31 percent of Californias state budget went to higher education and 4 percent to prisons. By 2005, it was 12 percent and 20 percent respectively.” Blew my mind when I first read that.

Back Bench Pizza LLC

I know he’s a little annoying but it’s pretty fucked up to throw matty matheson under the bus like that

I'm not even joking when I say my first name and married name rhyme 🫣 let's just say Sally McNally

Crocus

Every day I pray that we can leave this dog shit app behind. Is there no better monetization platform out there? Love the new episode though. Another banger in the books.

The snipers are aimed at Dunn Meadow at Indiana University my alma mater!! Shits nuts!!!

Austin Williams

let the Sons of Knickerbocker gather round Da Gay Pussy Eatah

Yung Chomsky pledged I Phelta Thigh. Great episode, and the funniest opening ever. I've been wondering if Brace ever accidentally busts out his "annoying Jew" voice by accident at a bad time. That could be funny!

eee

did you also see that they turned the nova festival into an art installation/exhibit now showing in fidi? sponsored by scooter braun

Mx_EddyNikko

Fantastic episode- so damn good ! Exactly right there aren't 2 sides. The media gaslighting is beyond belief.

Doug Cartel

Baroness Harkonnen there I said it

Doug Cartel

Buddy, if students protesting genocide counts as pro-hamas support, wait til you hear how many millions of dollars in bribes Netanyahu *himself* sent to hamas

Eden Labrys

I met a SJP organizer from my school at a TrueAnon show that we both happened to travel out of state for. Bringing the people together🤘

Fabienne

I really wish Liz would outline her thoughts and trim the fat bc trying to follow her multiple 18 min soapboxes that can be better summarized (& digested!) in 2 sentences makes me feel like I'm reading the Dr Bronners label :/ It also ceases to be a discussion ... idk. Not my podcast!

Graham Sparrow

God I love what you guys do. Thank you.

Mawiener

Liz u r not on an island, ur spot fucking on. This brought me back to life after hearing that absolute horseshit the wsj defecated into my ears

A.S.

I’m really glad Liz pointed out why protesters are wearing masks re: doxxing. I can’t stand that fucker Michael Tracey who had the audacity to judge them saying: “Sorry but the fact that so many Pro-Palestine protesters are still wearing outdoor COVID facemasks in April 2024 creates the impression that Pro-Palestine protests are dominated by the mentally ill” Fucking idiot knows damn well what they’re doing. Can’t stand these people who aren’t focused on the bigger issues at hand but instead focused on instigating and diminishing the real problems we’re facing.

A.S.

The level of denialism and brain washed individuals on the Israeli side makes my blood boil. I feel Liz’s venting sessions on a visceral level. It drives me nuts. In the words of Khomeini, the Zionist regime will fall. 🇵🇸

James H

Lol...best opening in a while lol

Seeking Treatment

I live right at the bottom of Cornell's campus and I've stopped by their encampment a few times after work. A small patch (compared to a 700 acre campus) with some tents, students doing work on their computers; dancing, speaking & serving food. About as dangerous as a potluck bbq

Kamran Husain

brace i can get you into one of my frats, im bros with prescott bush

Evan Pitkin

Cathartic, much needed ep. Thank you.

The Steel Harvest

never really looked up Brace... THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! And yea, I would guess you were Jewish. Was that an issue during your service?

Sheep

Shout out to the kid with the hickey on his neck. Good for him. 👍

K

I was just at the Yale encampment (rebuilt & still going strong as of rn!) & I literally watched a baby play with a puppy next to some students painting and reading while the president of the New Haven teachers Union talked her shit. It rocked

Lezli

Ye olde lady here - my partner was able to get undergrad degrees in philosophy, then anthropology, and then electrical engineering. I got undergrads in sociology and then nursing. Neither one of us needed loans because we worked and went slow, tuition was only $50/hr and rent was $200/month. This was all before 1997, I hear this type of "career" avoidance/education is really not allowed anymore. They limit the # of credits you can have and make you go to grad school at 3x the price. I hope students (and parents/faculty) continue the protests and even go on strike, I would gladly donate to their patreon.

sarah

I was at the UNC encampment all day. Shit rocked. We mostly ate and sang songs.

Ballz Aldrin

Truly a bleak and depressing world

Jeanette

listening to this at the university of oregon encampment!!

Mark

Liz is such a treasure, one of the best voices on the left

CE

Liz’s account of the financialization of higher ed as a calculated response to the campus protest movements of the 60s and 70s is so lucid and compelling. This process is so often talked about as a kind of mindless outgrowth of the abstract logic of late capitalism, as though the architects of the current arrangement decided to run universities like businesses because they were turning everything into businesses with no real long term goals beyond turning a quick profit, not because they wanted to destroy the very dangerous thing the university had become. Nice work~~

S H

It’s good vibes at Cornell

Adrienne Graf

Excellent episode as I drove down to the campus that I’m a professor at to visit the pro Palestine encampment students sprang up 4 days ago. Thank you for speaking on the “Palestine Exception” to academic freedom on college campuses, and how basically higher ed is a corporate nightmare.

Rene Saller

Hey, Liz, my wedding band is platinum, and it seems to have functioned as expected--our 26th anniversary is coming up in July. Just a data point, pro-platinumwise.

Rene Saller

I'm also an alumna of the university where Dr. Jill Stein just got arrested.

Scoot

Just got back from another protest at UT Austin. They used stun grenades and pepper spray on us.

Rodney Dangerfield - Back To School … noice!

Kelson

As someone who has 2 semesters of community college so is functionally brain dead, this was an amazing episode. Liz opened my eyes to a bunch of shit in regards to universities I had zero clue about. Thanks y'all.

J P 3

Economic genius Larry Summers lost Harvard's endowment $1.8 billion back in 2009. Didn't seem to hurt his professional career at all. Famous Columbia U. alum Obama has also been noticeably silent on the protests. I imagine he is putting a higher priority on his Netflix deal. Quite a profile in courage.

Tron Quip

really though, a Free Israel campaign has legs

Will Elliot

I trust you guys made this in good faith but after this morning I wouldn’t wipe my ass with this episode.

Laur Connor

17:57 I swore you said Vagisil pants and i spit my coffee

the empty suit

UIowa staff here! The snipers were at Indiana University, University of Iowa does not yet have an encampment. However, our students are still consistently showing up and demonstrating publicly despite not having the numbers for a solidarity encampment.

babygurl

Ya shout out to the salamanders

Anon Ibid

Imagine cherishing your civilization 🤪

The Steel Harvest

also, as I relisten to Brace's intro sketch, I feel kinda guilty for laughing

mexicanhalloween .

I bet mayor pete could teach Liz how to do obama voice

MKatieUltra

The skunk spray causing vaginal bleeding reminds me of when that happened to BLM protestors who got tear gassed. It probably has endocrine disrupting chemicals, whether incidentally or by design.

Alaina Nuvola

YC was the frat TKE???😭😭😭

Peanut Horse

Is the song at 50:40 a yung Chomsky cover or was that his own lil song? I swear it sounds familiar

Pete Kat-Chu

I fucking hate our government and institutions. If feels like everything has been captured for profit and to endebt the population so that we keep our heads down on the grind stone.

Trees

Last year West Virginia university cut all their foreign language programs in lieu of using a Duolingo style app. They cited budget stuff but then invested that money in their forensics program (cops)

Alexander Johnson

"The supposed marketization of education... rests on a confused and underdeveloped analogy: are students the consumers of the service or its product?" -Mark Fisher. As someone involved in higher ed I can't describe how bad the attitude toward actual education on campus is. Students view college as a box-checking exercise, not a chance to learn anything that would put them in touch with their humanity. But the fact that some students are willing to put themselves in actual danger to give voice to people they've never met warms my heart.

Internet jones

One of the most insane things I’ve see was in like 2017 canary project was going after some rando 28 year old pre med student in the suburbs at a community college over spicy Facebook commentary on Israel bombing Palestine. Truly deranged shit, it was also in an area with one of the largest populations of Palestinian diaspora and I’m pretty sure it was connected to protests of one of the village trustees who was saying racist stuff about Arabs. Like the village trustee was like probably contacting canary mission to attack political opponents. The village trustee wasn’t even Jewish lol.

Brendan Kneeland

Amber Frost called universities “protest habitrails” which was amazing but Liz really rounded out what that meant here. I feel like I learn when I listen to you - all of you. Thank you 💜

Hal Warren

I too kind of wish that TrueAnon would extract the greatest hits that people talk about in the comments, or mark them somehow in the episodes, when I don't want to hear the banter or wait for them to come to some conclusion.

Hal Warren

Half of them behave like journalists; the other half live in their basements, read books, and then report back their analysis. They are all friends with one another. If you cannot recognize this, you might want to recalibrate or continue shelling out dough, which is a lot more expensive than media used to be, kind of like a New Yorker subscription whose circulation and readership is among the highest brackets of income--I think a figure I saw once was a median income of $120,000 a year. Either people who are subscribed to all of these podcasts have that kind of money (many probably do) or they are getting played and don't realize it. It's the same model that's been used by other forms of media, e.g., streaming services, and it's a bad deal all around for everyone, vs, say, public access media which is based on individual contributions or funded through a national levied "TV Tax", as in Germany or the UK.

Hal Warren

Not to mention, unless some privacy feature is on, when you click on many profiles of these commenters, the majority do NOT pay TrueAnon, which means they should also fuck off when the people who DO pay, the "Patrons", give feedback in the only channel available for what/how the "Creator" should be doing with their show, or doing with the money that we gave them.

Lulu

Important episode. Thanks.

DRS

Love Liz’s passion

Michael

Loved the critical university theory monologue from Liz

Natalie

I think there's a Trueanon curse where you guys make an episode about something and then it escalates almost immediately after. Brace saying the skunk spray was the worst thing to happen and then all this Zionist violence happened at the student protests last night, Liz with the Kate Middleton arc, saying Russia won't invade Ukraine days before...Fuck even after you started the podcast Epstein died almost immediately. What's going on here!!! lmao

Clammy_Damp

Solidarity and whatever but if you’re politically conscious enough to protest your evil ass university you should grow a spine and drop out

Miss Mad

The snipers were spotted at Indiana University (not Iowa) AND Ohio State University where a number of university buildings (including the hospital) bear the name Wexner.

Brian Long

Liz’s summary of modern higher education was a realization I had while I was adjunct at the University of Minnesota. Stopped teaching when I realized how fucked the entire system is. The amount of money students spend for ME of all people to teach them a class is robbery.

JV

such a good episode thank you

Zachary Manenti

Spot on and brill spoken Liz… total downstream of reaganomics shift in how we see higher ed. Ronald Reagan was also the fucker who made it impossible to default on student loan (no statute of limitation on student loans and murder—- the only two), and to start charging high interest rates on it, etc etc… ( Yes the antichrist came and went (died) and his name was Ronnie). Berkeley and SFSU still had very inexpensive in state tuition in the 1980s… like under $350 a semester ( and that was considered highway robbery at the time!), and student loans were a very low interest rate (1 or 2 %) way to study without having to work an extra job, more than just to pay tuition. But did you know this? The legal precedents were two cases of a doctor and i believe a dentist who bought expensive cars w their student loan money and didn’t pay it back…. something like that… in other words, a cover to make it look like it wasn’t an attack on poorer students getting a lib arts BA… but punishing medical students more interested in becoming rich than becoming humanitarian do gooders. Anyway, they also ‘moralized’ student debt. If u have lot of it you’d better have studied for a practical return on investment career, or punished w no debt forgiveness recourse—-that you r some type of irresponsible liberal arts welfare queen rather than looking at the proprietary lending of Sallie Mae capitalizing on leveraged finance with the money they lend u and then have to pay back with interest and astronomical fees. Guilt tripping you as a ‘bad person’ for having debt… the cardinal sin for americans (unless they r billionaires, then debt is a good thing).

Zachary Manenti

Talk about free education… or for a nominal subscription price look how much I can learn from ‘prof’ Liz and Brace! I guess there’s some subversion of global market monopoly privatized corporatism in the scaling of the internet mass. Thanks teach. But it also occurred to me how those aspirations you so well describe: to encourage and explore one’s intellectual freedom and creativity and increase the capacity of oneself as a political citizen and creative thinker around the social good and change that comes w free higher education, also shifts, under the same economic and political strategies, into aspirations achievable in the New Age and self improvement ideological movement/markets. Rather than educating…it’s selling…a method and belief. The Oprah-esque individualized offshoot of neo liberalism —-to increase your own capacity, not to think socially/politically, but to individually succeed in the system, to increase your happiness and your potential for making money and gaming, in a way, the system—-for your own egoistic and individual fulfillment and success. To be a winner not a loser, & to become a billionaire and change the system by influencing and manipulating it to your own values, justifying it as socially beneficial, perhaps. And that’s what makes it so seductive… to have freedom and to improve social awareness the way Oprah does. It draws on those very aspirations at the heart of free higher Ed, but w/in a mystified neo lib ideology! And all of this develops within the same time frame more or less.

crisp eggner

Late to the game with this one but any recs for the privatization of public education?

Steo

Excellent work, how you managed to not scream into the mic, very frustrating current affair

Sardonic

Somewhat lost in the debate around higher ed costs is that most institutions do not have the absurd billion dollar endowments. The institutions that do are the ones who have an outsized presence in the discourse but the vast majority are cash strapped trying to get by after states stopped regularly increasing funding. It is from this that you see the modern landscape of tuition dependent universities competing for students on amenities and who can produce the best job outcomes possible. Virtually all problems in higher education can be traced to this.

Sherihan Khalil

Please revisit this episode in light of a lock up of a student and seemingly silent uni professors

Lars

Please follow up.

Madeline

shout out to Liz being ahead of the curve - i’m listening to this one year later and people are just now starting to publicly discuss the responsibility to protect
