Just let him be Professor Young Chomsky! He deserves it lol

Tom

Reminds me of some of my college classmates that would file an LLC and make a website so they could put "CEO" on their LinkedIn profile.

Irvin de la Rosa

I know YC clipped Brace saying he'll never complain again.

Antonio Kaisen

If communism means free jazz then I renounce the spirit of Marx and embrace the Right

itsjenjen

can you move the gong with you?

Megatark

Roblox is incredibly exploitative and it's facicinating just how bad it is and what that means for the future of the internet. People should definitely look into it.

Richard Cochnar

Brace knows so many nerdy video game terms. I never knew he was such a gamer.

Savage Dawn

Moons over mihami sent me.

Peanut Horse

We need a Roblox episode in the same vain as the MetaVerse episode

Antonio

the background music toward the end is a tasteful addition

Andrew Hardwidge

Do you have a link to the rib horning article?

Daniel Hansen

Keeping to miami and con men… valuetainment and them guys may be worthy of an episode.

Peanut Horse

Of course you guys post an episode on fake money the day GME pops off again

Tomas Vall

I add as an extension to this world- TikTok live. There is a whole economy exchanging thousands of dollars through people going live. I have a buddy in Florida who is noticing this and trying to get people into this ecosystem so that he can manage multiple "live" personalities and scrape some of that off the top. Someone very close to me made five thousand dollars in a day, and it didn't require her to show her boobs or anything. In fact, she'd say that she does better avoiding sexual topics altogether. She makes way more money doing this than sending pics of her feet to strangers. A curio for those trying to follow the next evolution of the OnlyFans phenomenon!

Return of The Mac 2nite

That sinophobic dogwhistle toward the end of the interview really clinched it 💀 f this guy

th

loved the Laurie Anderson big science bit with the metronome Liz did there

Zach Young

I used to just duplicate the Fin Gleam in oblivion for a lot of money early game

malfeasance

Brace Roblox gameplay when???

Grackle

I think it's so funny that, as much as technology and culture have changed even in the past decade, even just the past five years, get rich quick schemes have not changed at all. The timeless financial lifehack: commit crime!

jay alan

Another fire ep. Thanks y’all 🫡🙏🏻

mills

free jazz is goated

Natalie

I wanna see them do VR again lol

Natalie

you would love dennys

Swimaroo

Also how Amazon has taken over the Postal Service infrastructure like a parasitic 🪱

Swimaroo

The American dialect has 500 words for Conman

Blank

Damn this ep left me feeling hollow, very hard these days not to be blackpilled :(

Thomas Meade

Roblox is teaching children to code (sic*) and then takes the games they make and distribute them and then make money off of advertising. A Roblox segment in this episode would have been great.

Marcus

Hellcats and Alfa Romeos should not be equated.

MoldyTolge

31:04 Passing Wind 💨

MoldyTolge

Is all Tik Tok live the popcorn stuff? Does the genre change or just the “personalities”?

MrMojoRisin

Any gamer who's self-aware knows that Liz was spot on in the SBF episode. If you play an online game for 1 hour, you're guaranteed to meet someone fully detached from reality. Some people get lost in the sauce.

J HUTCH

Times were better when the kids just played Transport Tycoon Deluxe instead of Roblox

I worked for unnamed internet retailer for six years, and an unspoken agreement evolved between us as customer service reps and drop-shippers calling in about their myriad orders and returns; an agreement, I might add, that was tacitly acknowledged and guided by leadership. I HATED the tedious bullshit they would insist you go through, but honestly I never could hate the grift.

Drew Crean

I was a mail carrier for a year and a half in a high volume office outside my city (basically a rich suburb) and our lives were basically governed by Amazon packages. Virtually couldn’t go home to your family at night or have a holiday off or most weeks even a single day off, all because of Amazon. You are basically an Amazon employee at USPS. Mail is straight up delayed, ignored and curtailed for Amazon.

Ben Watson

My god. I grew up with Alec Monopoly. Amazing reference.

Juan Gonzalez

About the scammer Miami guy, I knew someone who did at a huge amount, Telegram is full of this

Juan Gonzalez

If I’m remembering correctly one of the owners was looking for one of his old mods that scammed him of millions in bitcoin

hamburglar

I’m old but in the mid 2000s all the business school undergrads were doing “tshirt businesses” that were pretty much just doing CafePress middleman shit for frats and small businesses to pad their resumes. They’d also get roped into all kinds of dumb “work for yourself” scams so they could get really funny inflated titles like “account manager.” One of my dumber buddies almost got snared into one of these scams where he was supposed to cash overseas checks into his personal bank account then wire the money back to the scammer and take a % of the transaction. He would have gotten fucked over if he wasn’t bragging to us about this “incredible” side job he had lined up. And it was posted on the college jobs board! I can only imagine how many more insanely obvious scams are going around now, business colleges are full of the most smooth brained rubes and cynical predators, and the rubes think they are all 5d chess grindset geniuses.

K H

Brace is so good at talking. His meth rants must have been like listening to the colors coming out of the Arc of the Covenant. Blind your hearing mute your vision type shit.

K H

Beta Romeos

Robert Sayre

There are a few things about this one: 1) Most social networks view that split as people who post vs people who just read 2) Most social networks (but not Twitter/X) tilt heavily female, because men spend more time on PornHub/OnlyFans/Games. Only so many hours in a day. 3) Spam email works the same way--this takes advantage of people that compulsively purchase things. I remember reading an article about someone that thought it was so great that he could purchase so many vitamins on the internet. So he had this apartment full of hoarder vitamins.

Instantdumbass

Would love to see Racial Jake on the PBD podcast

S H

If you move fast and break things, things are broken after that

MCL

305 forever- Miami is the only reality, all fuck all the time.

S H

Why?

TBagelDeluxe

Lovelovelove, boobs in profile? Eh?

The Fine Art Revolution

I’m guessing the ai will seep into the consumer base too. It could aggregate the already ai content for ever- slimmer crumbs that resonates with the real consumer. But then it’ll be ai exploiting ai

Alex C

Fantastic vibes coming off this interview, props to hosts and guest. Pseuper para social 🐏

Antipaganda

In what world did any millennial ever have any respect for influencers? They were never seen as authentic. And more widely, what you're describing is the same criminal economy that springs up in any capitalist system, it's as old as newspaper ads for bogus creams.

Antipaganda

Pig butchering: the same scam since the Spanish Duke except in China.

kevjmahon

Every so often, Liz says something so correct that I have to go back and listen to it six or seven times to fully absorb it. 30 minute mark on this episode.

Benjamin Slagter

I’ve been at one of the bougiest restaurants in Darien for 3 years. I’m determined to learn about this kid.

Julie D

Can someone explain to me, an old woman, what drop shipping is?

Tomas Vall

From what I’ve seen, it is a lot of the same type of shows- your success depends on your relative popularity, and some personalities are just a bit better at getting and retaining audiences than others.

foul tarnished

The gist of it is: a consumer makes a purchase from a merchant who has no product on hand. The merchant then orders the product directly from the manufacturer, who ships the product directly to the consumer using the shipping details provided by the consumer. It's considered high risk by many payment processors due to issues with shipping times and the overall lower quality goods that are sold and branded as the drop shopper's own--typically its the same suppliers as, say Temu (oo oo temu)

Julie D

So the consumer avoids this by purchasing from reputable websites, right? This is why I don't trust anything on Amazon anymore, it all seems fake.

Hall wingfield

Brace's video game knowledge is very centered in a specific timeframe. He seems to have been a very active gamer in the late '90s and early oughts, most of his videogame references (like Baldur's Gate) are from this time. His references to games made after this time period are few and far between

Richard Cochnar

Knowing about RMT stuff in WOW is at least early to mid 2000s!

Nic Bodiford

Does “free jazz” just mean it doesn’t cost anything to listen? I am hopeful.

Joe

Arbitrage

Joe

I'm reminded of Dee's scooter with the "$CAMMIN" plate

snapplepeachtea

I would be impressed by the 21 year old fraud guy's ingenuity, except he used his money to go to Dubai? my god, have higher aspirations than that

Teddy Ballgame

The base-superstructure aspect of this is fascinating. A truly massive culture, a set of celebrities, a creation of what’s trendy, even a creation of values — all existing from fraud and bubbles made possible by social media and the fruits of a decade or zero interest rates

Teddy Ballgame

The culture industry built up around crypto is a great example of this. It’s unambiguously lame but inevitably becomes big / people pretend it’s cool because of how it’s interlinked to making money

Pelican Grief

STEM mentality. Precious little imagination within these dorks. The expanse of the natural world and all of human culture available to them and they want to go to the big mall.

Drew

"I'm creamed right now"

K H

Dude I don't get any of this shit. I didn't get Facebook either though so idk. I think replicants must have been as disgusted and confused by humans as I am by clout goblins and their communities. Too far away.

Hannah

A note on the video games/losing touch w reality point: at least from the research I'm familiar with, most agree that unless you're a literal psychopath or have something going on up top, regular people don't confuse what happens in video games with real life. Kids who shoot virtual zombies don't mistake that for being the same thing as shooting a real person, the brain doesn't understand those things in the same way. (Tho general desensitization to violence is a separate issue.) *However* in this discussion, I think it's important to mention that the gamification of the economy and social sphere is making the distinction between real/virtual worlds increasingly blurry. On top of the people who will sell video game accounts/resources/currency online for real money, every company has a rewards/point system now, social media and online dating apps are formatted like a casino, and seemingly "legitimate" public figures are shilling crypto/NFTs/AI, etc. etc. etc. It's hard to take anything seriously when everything is made to feel like a video game for consumer engagement and profit. It's all fake and fabricated and subject to change when someone feels like it, so why not game the system back? I feel like there could be some interesting parallels here with perspectives on the national debt too.

saaffie

I have been so close to this scammy-side of the web3 world. Often there are VCs behind the first line scammers...madness.

Kabir F

As a gen-zeed person, I feel like there is another sort of anti-work group that is paranoid of being a part of any form of productivity/production because of the fear of benefiting from exploitation.

mya

brace, my brother, i am here and i stand with you. i got called an “old soul” last year by a 19 year old because i still have a juul. if juul has one fan, its me, etc etc etc

Colin Helpio

Drop shipping is like being a door-to-door salesman but with even less dignity than Willy Loman.

uya

i’ve never partaken in this sort of thing bc ive had enough legal problems and dont rlly want to go to prison. but i do like learning about whats going on. It’s interesting this person needed to hack people to do what he did. Unless security has gotten better in the last year or so its really not necessary. Most refunding scams are done by a simple photoshop trick. You say youre sending the product back and mail out a photoshopped envelope that has tracking info that makes the computer think it got sent to the refund warehouse. but you changed the address so it actually goes to a random mcdonalds in the same zipcode. amazon has a working tracking number that says the item was sent back and then u get ur refund. not ur problem that their 3rd party warehouse lost the item you sent back. or in theory thats how its supposed to work. i could definitely see there being some fix for it by now

Katie Potter Doula

How about an episode about YouTube/Minecraft grooming?

uya

34:36 i think the important detail for kids growing up on minecraft and roblox (as somebody who is just young enough to remember getting the alpha build of mc) is not just being exposed to the customizability but the /profitability/. Minecraft servers cost money to run, especially 10 years ago if u wanted to play with your friends you either needed to pay for and set up your own server or pay somebody else $5 a month. and on that server you could probably pay to get extra powers or items. and then you realize “oh i could be the one selling this stuff”. when i was a kid (13-16) i worked for my favorite youtuber who had his own server. he was just some guy who got a following playing halo and parlayed that into an entire business model like charging people to post theur videos on a bunch of different soecific interest channels, and then also ran a minecraft server that cost $10/mo that we all were happy to py for on the off chance we got to hang out w our favorite youtuber. And as a kid you see that and at least for me at 14/15 i was already thinking “I don’t want to pay to be somebody’s friend, I want to be the person that gets paid”. I grew up and luckily went down a different path but I can only imagine there’s probably thousands if not millions of teens now with similar experiences in a world where all of those influences and stimuli are 10x more extreme and more in their face

Brian Ward

Incredible number of "you know"'s near the end of this convo

D5er

Hella interesting ep good work yall

Zachary Manenti

Why we have bored apes… Do ppl really believe they survive things like slavery, the holocaust, 9-11 or the Covid pandemic? How naive. One reason Trump comes back strong is as nostalgia to soothe psyches, a time machine before the pandemic. The pandemic was a real (historical)event; paradoxical that ‘events’ r always traumatic, suggesting that trauma, as something in excess of registering in reality, is not a happening, not an event, bc it exceeds the possibility of being grasped as an event… yet it is perhaps the only thing that marks an event as such and not as a mere simulation. You know it happened coz u never got over it, though u r not quite sure what happened, really, & u just repeat endlessly, via some fantasy meaning code, what lead up to it. This being a simple short-hand explanation for something far more complex, something that, in order to go beyond it, requires an intervention like psychoanalysis, which is a non-existent practice in the USA.

Bella

my ex bf was doing this shit to me fr, I’m gonna have to call into that tip line soon fr
