We finally get around to discussing one of the worst attempted coups since that one in Venezuela: This time in the DRC. We also talk Mobuto, Rwanda, blood minerals, and more.

Listen to our previous episode about the DRC with Robert Flummerfelt.

Noah

Don’t need to.

Leebos

I've been working for a refugee placement service, and the state of the Congolese refugee camps has made me so bummed in my work life. So glad to also listen to it while I do my case notes 🥲

Antonio Kaisen

Back in 2015 I was at Bundase Training Camp in Ghana where we were training along side UK special ops guys. The stated mission goal was "the integration of special operations and conventional forces with the interoperability to rapidly establish and deploy to counter violent extremist organizations". One thing I remember is how often little dudes with glasses from Langley were training alongside us. Big frame glasses from Harvard kind of guys. Anyway, I did SO much cocaine during those few months.

Antonio Kaisen

Long story short: South African mercs were who we got the cocaine from. There are hundreds of these former SA Army guys who lease themselves out like they're still fighting for Rhodesia. While I do believe CIA was involved, this was probably a hands off operation meant to test the waters of what an actual coup would look like. Zero assaults on air ports, no seizing the treasurer, and no surrounding of embassys means this was amateur hour. Expect something bigger to happen in the coming months.

Blank

Idk how you carved out this bit but I’m into it

This is their job on the leftist commune

Lake Kivu might explode bc it’s got a lot of carbon dioxide and methane stored under it. A company wants to collect it but they might disturb the reserves causing the gas to leak and kill everyone. Look up “lake kivu gas explosion kill everyone”

I read that African World War book and it's good. And yeah, Paul Kagame is an underrated world villain. Any good info on how Uganda and Rwanda are tied into the US? Also, my favorite political party name is the Union of Mobutist Democrats.

The whole episode I was waiting for the finish to be “this has been Coup Anon”

jay alan

Extremely educational ep. 🫡

saysthemachine

so I was a part of a sort of “political action” group we’ll call it, in SLC around this time that aimed to (among other things) halt construction of the Inland Port. We had public meetings to recruit and do recon/outreach to develop more action items. There were a few times when a “representative of the mormon church” would sit in and listen, sometimes show up to actions, just completely obviously out of place and wouldn’t contribute much of anything and it for some reason didn’t cause much alarm in people. I was still quite naive about the world and corruption to know better but I realize now that Utah has spooks of all ranks everywhere and that religious institutions there are full of them. Not surprised by anything Ihear coming out of there

Keanu

found the paisas xD

Keanu

ight but i don’t live in the global south and i’m still broke as fuck

Keanu

Alright but what is actually the name of the song Brace was trying to sing because it’s been stuck in my head all day. Also shout out to Brace for speaking DIRECTLY to me when he said 1996 and that that was the year I was born. Truly appreciated.

Dan

I was in the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, which Is like ROTC but outside of school; can confirm that it was comprised of neuro-divergents and misfits.

Solferino

we NEED a current Haiti episode I want to hear about papa doc and barbecue.

Clip YC saying, “that’s normal”

Rosie

young chomsky was waiting to use a Smiths drop

Robert Ditty

"Come on pretty mama!" just finish the verse normally so it references the original song. They don't name another location. The whole time Brace was trying to figure out how to end his parody, I was yelling at my car stereo, “Come on pretty mama!’

she's all rat

Ghost Stories for the End of the World has been doing a crazy series on Belgium. Several episodes on the DRC . You think you know Tintin? You have no idea. 👁

Tranche Devereaux

Came to the comments for better versions of Kokomo and I’m disappointed

The Adventures of Mac

I think if you have real gravitas, livestreaming the coup might be the move.

the empty suit

Unironically, I love it when Brace sings dorky songs.

Sean

International Relations definitely calls for Brace noise

Jim Hill

Your mom likes it in the global south……

Taz

ROTC is still alive and well. Or was 10 years ago when I was in high school

Taz

Liz go to Copa!!!!

MEAT CLOWN

I wasn't familiar with Richie Torres so I looked him up after Brace said he was a foreign agent, and holy shit he isn't exaggerating at all. On his Twitter the very most recent post is "During a failed bid for Congress, former Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou cynically released a photo of herself eating challah bread after embracing the BDS movement, which seeks the destruction of Israel as a Jewish State." His entire page is just pro-Israel propaganda. Insane.

Oscar G.

I have a giant Matisse poster that I got from my parents in my room, that's crazy

MEAT CLOWN

Poo poo, and pee pee, ooh I'm drinking wee wee

Intothavortex

I rode the elevator with Emily rata once and I must say 5’7” sounds accurate

Alexander O'Connor

The Olympics did actually take place on A island, the isle of Olympia in Greece. Liz is right and I agree it should go back to that. Also make the athletes compete naked again.

Ian Firstenberg

Is Emily Ratj supposed to be taller or shorter than 5'7

Winston Reid

I have a bizarre fascination with Central Africa and the Rwandan Genocide, so this episode is gold to me. A few book recommendations on top of Prunier: David Van Reybrouck's Congo: The Epic History of a People, Jean Hatzfeld's Machete Season, and, my favorite, Andrew Wallis' Stepp'd in Blood. Stepp'd in Blood focuses on the Hutu hardliner (not Iranian) clan that formed around Juvenal Habyarimana's wife Agathe. There's a lot of evidence it was the Akazu (meaning "little house" in Kinyarwanda) - and not the RPF, that shot down Juvenal's plane. The French had a vested interest in placing the blame on the RPF. After a generation of living in Uganda, the Tutsi refugees had adopted English as their language and held fairly Anglophilic views of colonialism in Africa. The French, terrified of losing another neo-colony to the British, did everything they could to prop up the Francophone Hutu government, including a military expedition (Opération Turquoise) to protect genocidaires. The SAM that hit the plane was most likely fired from a Presidential Guard base near Kigali Airport. The head of the base, and the Presidential Guard as a whole, was a guy named Protais Mpiranya. He was intimately involved in the Interahamwe and turned the base into the main distribution point for weapons to death squads in Kigali. In 2006, he would be found dead in Harare living under and assumed name, before he could be brought to justice. The French accusation is based on less-than-credible witness testimony and the fact the missile was a Soviet made SAM that was theorized to only be available to the Ugandan Army at the time (from which a lot RPF members defected). Frankly, I find the evidence underwhelming. By 1994, the Akazu had sidelined Juvenal and treated him with open disgust due to his willingness to negotiate with the rebels. It was this same clique that funded the infamous Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines ("cut the tall trees") and organized machete deliveries from China. They wanted him dead. This gets really interesting when you look at the connections between the Akazu and the French deep state. The day after the assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana, François de Grossouvre, an advisor to Mitterand, and the chief of the French offshoot of Operation Gladio, committed suicide in his office in the Elysee Palace. He had shot himself with .357 in the head. He did not leave a suicide note. It's never been fully explained why he did it, but news at the time reported he was depressed after a "falling out" with Mitterand a week or so before. De Grossouvre was a contact point for French operations in Africa and the Middle East.

Kagame's son lives Lindsey Vonn's old house in Beverly Hills. He's an "entrepreneur."

Dino Zaccagna

Beach Boys of central Africa goes hard.

I learned a lot from this. More Africa episodes please. I’d love to hear one about Burkina Faso

Katrina Swett’s husband Dick was a congressman from New Hampshire in the 90s. She ran for Congress in 2002 and lost

I bring this book up a lot but The Fate of Africa about post-colonial Africa is an invaluable book on how Africa ended up where it is today. It goes in great detail into the past of each African country, how European colonialism shaped them, and where they ended up as Europe began "pulling out" of the area.

Ben Burke

Still waiting on the Belden Program

Scooby Doo be like RAHTZEE

Court Hansen

When I was doing my masters like 5 or 6 years ago I attended a truly bizarre academic conference about genocide that was shadily funded by the kegame government. The keynote speaker was a high ranking member of his cabinet and the speech was a strange impassioned rant begging westerners to come to Rwanda and see for themselves that there is no racism or genocide happening there.

Budget Hireling

Yung Chomsky stays winning. The true triple threat.

I keep coming back to the idea of attacking the Economics Minister. If a guy embodies the economic thought of a regime so much as to be the Economic Minister, it 100% does not matter if you kill him, they have 84 more guys like that

Lars

Well Holy fuck. Very interesting listening to this after the assassinations in Minnesota today by Boelter.

Lars

Also, I love CoupAnon. ❤️
