SRD is so good—his nonfiction work is great, too. “Motion of Light in Water” is an incredible memoir. Also on the sci-fi recs tip: gotta shout out Thomas Disch’s “Camp Concentration.” Brilliant book—a combo of prison narrative, “Flowers for Algernon,” alchemy, and dystopian fiction.

I think there is something to video games normalizing a certain kind of behavior. Not that it makes you do it, but it makes the premise less weird. I find I have difficulty playing shooting games after all the images coming from Palestine. Some connection even if very distant.

You aren’t alone in thinking about this. I think it’s very real. I do a lesson on Islamophobia in my civics class, where I talk about the normalization of this type of violence towards Arabs. I show the kids news media, video games, comedy shows, etc from the pre and post 9/11 days and then compare it to modern video games. Whether it’s intentional or not, those video games are (mostly) Arab dehumanization simulators.

Ever read “Earth Abides” by George R. Stewart? Considered the first post-apocalypse book. Doesn’t go in for the whole roving gangs of murder rapists shtick. More a reflection of how people rebuild a society after a mass death. It’s written from the perspective of a geo-scientist who is one of the survivors. Stewart also writes from the perspective of the environment itself. Being a biologist and geographer, it’s something that he is uniquely well positioned to do. Stewart is a largely unacknowledged “great” American writer. Definitely worth picking up a copy of this book. He also wrote the seminal account of the Donner Party, titled “Ordeal by Hunger”. If you want to live inside one of Michael Judge’s nightmares, pick up a copy of that book. Haven’t been able to look at raw meat since I’ve read it.

Pleased to report I had a relationship with a military wife in my late teen years.. it was followed by a pregnancy scare, turns out the guy I shot oc 80s with every day was also sleeping with her… crazy as I moved to the small Georgia town my parents had moved to months before and only knew like 5 people… it was his baby. They married, she went on to be a licensed nurse practitioner, and during Covid took the wrap for his meth amphetamine dealing business as he begged her to do (since she was home when they kicked in the door)… aaaand while in prison doing his time, divorced her for another girl. Woah I was just driving through Virginia a couple weeks ago and stopped at that dinosaurs vs Yankees thing and it is truly kooky.. maybe I shouldn’t give them free advertising but it’s called Dinosaur Kingdom II (the first one burned down) and it’s a whole walk thru the woods where you encounter scenarios like a crazed zombie Abe harnessing escaping pterodactyls and bionic stonewall Jackson punching a spinosaurus with his “mechanicle arm”. Met the founder too and yeah that guy has clearly inhaled a lot of fumes from fabricating all the statues, nice guy I guess but a real character in sort of an unsettling way
