A song called tribal thumb but to the tune of sound garden’s black hole sun

NYCM&AHole

“Tribal thumb - won’t you come/ Asked the CIAAAAAA Tribal thumb - won’t you come? Won’t you come?”

Philippe Duhart

The opening discussion about food by one of the Matts is the best description of historical materialism I’ve ever heard (outside of an audiobook of The German Ideology).

Greg

This has been such a fascinating series about a group I had literally never heard of before. Have gone from 0 to completely thumbpilled.

Mark Owen

Dig Yourself! (an organic garden)

Blank

Is people’s cafe part of this world?

fugitivedocument

Botched robbery (w/ a 10 to life sentence) is likely felony murder - an unintentional killing committed in the commission of a felony offense.

cori

guys please check the twitter DMs i sent you a tiktok edit i saw of RFK jr. & jack schlossberg to “girl, so confusing” by charli xcx and i feel like liz would viscerally hate it

Dustin Johnson

This is not some government thing, it's about Criminals, weirdos & true believers unwilling to let go. It's sad. 68-74 represents a much bigger missed opportunity than history gives it credit for...

libra man

Wow this is great! I’m going to shave my face now. Thank you

Alex

diplo sold me some really methy e at the tribal thumb tent at burning man last year

snapplepeachtea

i like the obscure political urban legends type episodes

Natalie

i keep thinking these guys voices are the guys from the octopus murders they sound so similar

Natalie

Do Not Come

Tron Quip

Gotta think that Michel Foucault must have visited Wellsprings at least once. He was there man...

buttface

Tummies part 4

Jonathan Flowers

Wow, just moved to Minneapolis and I was wondering what was up with all these co-ops. Also, out of curiosity, how come you didn't use the Mamas and the Papas style theme song for these episodes?

Nate

If you want to read some modern communiques, check out Pal Action, an adventurist Palestinian direct action group funded by the Maoist heir to the billionaire Cox family. They posted one today that just said "we slashed the tires of 20 nypd cars"

Doomloop Dispatch

Hey Brace - Crime never played the Stud. They were supposed to play the Stud but then Johnny Strike made a flyer with Hitler on it and the Stud’s owner, who was Jewish, cancelled it

TrueAnonPod

ahahaha. Damn that's crazy. I remember that flyer from the book "Punk 77" my dad had around the house when I was a kid so assumed it happened

Michael S. Judge

Sonny Stitt was absolutely the last name I was expecting there. Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Holland on some White Allyship, John Surman and Stu Martin on a very confused booked-by-hippies tour, certainly, but Sonny Stitt was like 60

Michael S. Judge

Mahavishnu Orchestra Mark II (feat. Earl Satcher) would've gone so hard

Doomloop Dispatch

Crime’s first show was at the Longshoremen’s hall - that’s the one where they played two songs before being booted off. I really recommend reading the article in Ugly Things about Crime. It’s the best

Doomloop Dispatch

I should also add that Hank Rank recently released they’re going to be releasing the entire concert from San Quentin!

jrab

MOVE could also be compared to the likes of TT and SLA, as a quasi political organization that mostly fought the left and harmed the public, and raised suspicions of working with the state

buttface

The title could have used a little more work too.

Jonica Stewart

So I have a few or really 2 anarchist like friends who should hear this, but I have no idea how to share this with them. Should I record it off my phone? Ideas?

Evan

Brace kiss me

Jay-Z Pants

I was watching dead pool yesterday. Democrats probably think that’s racist too

Phillip Harris

Sonny Stitt was a pretty serious life long heroin addict (allegedly) I suspect he would show up for paid work for low pay or the right conditions. No disrespect to him at all

Zach

Damn I think this might be my favorite one

Carver Eller

Has anyone here ever read "Ringo Levio - A Life Played for Keeps" by Emmett Grogan? He's supposedly the sort of roaming organizer of the diggers who started the food conspiracies, the book is about his life journey going from NYC to Europe to SF, all the things he saw, and all the things he supposedly did. It's hard to say if the guy was real, and they even reference it in the book that the diggers say their leader is Emmett but it comes out in a way that no one knows if he is real or a symbol. The book is a really fun read, he meets a bunch of early 60's icons, and it's VERY easy meets West. Brace and Liz are 2 people way more well-read than me, so I wanted to see if you two ever came across it. Even outside of the question of how real the book is in Emmett Grogan's story, it definitely gave me a feel for the mentality of that time and how he saw the hippy movement immediately being co-opted by clothing store owners in the haight-ashbury, music promoters, and freaks like Timothy Leary.

libra man

Also hq was lit up

Zach

you guys gotta make this one free for the People #thepeoplespodcast

sneauxman

Maybe I'm crazy but I think one of them kinda sounds like Adam Friedland

Natalie

thankfully I've only heard his voice once in my life 🙏🏼🙏🏼 in the We Need Those Machines Chapo ep but all I remember is his crazy laugh lmfao

K H

The Diggers* were fucking smart. Did they have a systemized defense against infiltration by opposition? How could they have failed?

JZA

I hear it

Drew

It's really cool seeing Adam Friedland do serious research

Mark Philip

Doesn't play for me, anyone else?

Marko Loko Lopez

Alright, "famous editor I can't be bothered to look up on google"

Nite Life Jesse

In 1995 Tribal Thumb changed their name to Thievery Corporation

B JAMBOR

Are there any scans available of turnover magazine (released by the people’s food systems)? Outside of some found sf articles and a single expensive copy on eBay I haven’t been able to find anything. The fanshen shoutout and being a former farm to table restaurant dweeb this really speaks to my interests

Przemyslaw Grzybek

Hey Liz, Brice, Naom, I've been put onto Vollmann cos of you, mostly Brice, have read a few of his books now (Volkmann, Brice has written zero), Royal Family wow!!!, the Dying Grass♥️, how about you dudes do an episode on San Francisco's own Ambrose Bierce? The original shit poster, podcaster, internet guy in 1885? Survived 4 civil war battles!? Not good enough!? "What I saw at Shiloh” as good as war correspondence gets. Luv you.

TangiePower

So despite the food co-ops ending in bloodshed, I still feel pretty inspired by it all. The left needs a project beyond elections, so why not this? The expense of groceries is always an issue for workers and right now is a particular political hot potato. Food based activism seems like a rich vein for organizing with a specific objective (feed the people).

Cameron Young

My attempt at the where did the energy go question- To Quote the legendary annoying Abbie Hoffman, the heads and the fists were together in the food system, and after the fracturing of it they went separate ways. Heads started businesses - software and tech or more traditional. Fists started gangs or maybe a cult.

gumb0

Please make this a collection

Reece Coren

brace says family guy at 59:11

Egg B

Hell yeah, love seeing this post! I’m inspired by and have joined some food projects over time. Met some amazing people and saw a lot of different solutions. Lots to learn from out there!

Jonah Stocks ladd

My ma was involved in early food co ops in mnpls🤔mom! Go on trueanon!

jrab

Yeah I mean you gotta obliterate the evidence (along with an entire working class Black neighborhood)

Micheline

Idk if there are any regular Jeopardy watchers here but in the last couple weeks there was a question about Patty Hearst and the SLA lol.

Sarah S

I live in Humboldt and was actually just in Honeydew for this very local festival. Now that Honeydew/Petrolia area is known for the Scientology vault out there. Still looking for some people who remember Tribal Thumb. I love these eps so much.

kyra z j

Loved these eps and I wish this whole story would be adopted into prestige tv series. Season 1 true detective style .. would be so good

Natty

I’m at a creative residency in the basement of an art gallery in Helper Utah, working on developing a few shows, and my crazy older lady art friend and samba teacher just looked me in the eyes and told me to come to her house this month because she built an orgone energy accumulator. She said it’s given her body a lot of joyful feelings. Anyway, I’ll report back soon.

John Cameron

Good luck to whoever's MKULTRA trigger is hearing "Veritable Vegetable" about twenty times

Rhys Hayes

Does anyone have a link to that High Times article about the New World Liberation Front? New-era broken Google can’t help me find it.

Brock

Oh so that's why all the stuff is in Inherent Vice

i am a bird now

I listened to all 4 episodes and you didn’t mention Warren Zevon once… very disappointing
