(Male feminist (!), me, they said I was trying to get into the Mattress Barn, sadly closed, next door.) Apparently, I spent a couple hours regaling the body shop owner, his wife, and some ~ladies~ (wow) with my grandfather’s redneck Arkansas Ozark “make the metal listen to you” stories. Nerd fabricator stuff. Popped the quarter panel, got a few numbers, what an opportunity at 19. Shout out the kind woman who called me a week later asking about a date. I guess her grandma had dementia, so she knew how to talk to me pretty well. Man, what could’ve been if they hadn’t screwed up the formula. (I’d be dead.)

Had a meeting today where my manager briefed us on how upper management believes we are over staffed by 60%, but because our reporting systems we use to track our production are not the best they can’t confidently quantify it, so they are implementing new processing procedures to record that better. I haven't noticed any severe bladder issues, but I have had semi-frequent kidney and bladder infections. I had them before I used, for decades, but I am sure this made it more common. I think there's actually way less chance of automation taking existing manual labour jobs any time soon, especially compared to lower level white collar stuff. Automation works in factory settings because the context is highly rigid and controlled and the work repetitive. Outside of the factory floor there is so much unpredictability, so much more room for things to go wrong and so much more opportunity for wear and tear on the machinery. Moving parts are the first to go, and these humanoid robots with the necessary mobility and flexibility to do useful work outside of a tightly controlled environment are going to have nowhere near the longevity of industrial automation with significantly more maintenance required, and likely at a similar level of capital investment. Not only that, but the supply chains for the materials to produce robots to replace any significant amount of the manual / service labour force just isn't there, and possibly will never be once the impacts of the climate crisis ramp up and fossil supplies dwindle. White collar labour automation doesn't have any of these issues though. All white collar work happens through a computer anyway and so automating it requires zero moving parts or localised maintenance costs. It can even happen in a centralised manner at a distance via massive AI data centres. There's kind of a poetic tragedy to it, because a lot of the population were hearded towards white collar jobs with the promise of being harder to replace by automation and outsourcing in comparison to manual work. On a fluffier level I also think there's a libidinal thrill the rich get from being served by actual people, which will maintain a lot of manual service work through automation. Linking to the tip that opened the episode, I can very much see domestic work making a massive comeback in the AI tumult.
