We read through the Jane Street-funded arms trafficking allegations made against a South Sudanese activist, talk Sudan and South Sudan, ask what the hell Gary Kasparov is up to, and give a classic coup review.

I love a Coup Review but unfortunately it sounds too much like the name of a podcast I already subscribe to called “Kuru View” where people who have contracted a prion disease after performing ritual cannibalism do a kind of zoo crew cum town thing

Not to be a pedantic weapon pervert but the AK-47 or Type 56 was considered a submachine gun in Combloc parlance with the SKS serving as the rifle. The Sudanese website might still be using that older terminology that has fallen out of fashion for assault rifle.

TrueAnonPod

They also call their AR ripoff a submachine gun

I was really hoping to avoid the Kasparov stuff 😭 been dodging it on chess sites, but im not skipping a trueanon episode

Michael S. Judge

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is a legit genius movie. I was expecting it to be homework, but it rules

Kevin

That would allude to them using the Soviet naming convention. It looks like The Sudanese were using Chinese tooling packages so its the Soviet naming convention the way of China. Where magazine fed man portable intermediate caliber weapons are called submachine guns because of their squad role. Opposed to the US/NATO Anglosphere where the caliber determines the classification. However, its an improper noun you can use it however you want.

Eliza Monster

Peter Biar Ajak's dissertation on state failure in South Sudan is actually worth a read for those interested in South Sudan.

Enjoyed all the cava talk in this ep. When can we expect the BRACE BOWL to hit the app?

Part of New Chronology is the statistical argument that, e.g., what's more likely: 50 guys who are sort of comparable to Jesus Christ, or Jesus Christ being described by 50 guys who gave him different names and told slightly different stories about him? THEREFORE, any historical figure comparable to Jesus, in any way, WAS Jesus, which means the "different times and places" they lived were, in fact, one time and one place. Which for some reason is always in either modern Turkey or modern Russia, like 700 years ago

Michael S. Judge

I got to hear Garry, two Rs, explain this in a conference room at a library, then challenge Barack Obama to be "as great as Reagan" by destroying the existing Russian state, via means upon which he did not feel the need to elaborate. It was one of the funniest events of my life

Michael S. Judge

You got a national hero? That was Peter the Great. You got a nightmare tyrant? That was Genghis Khan. You got a bad final head of state like Nero or Caligula? Son, that was Nero and Caligula.

Read if you want. Arguably dumbest thing I ever did while in Sudan (/South Sudan—at the time it was still a “unified” single country very much in a civil war and rapidly permanently splitting) was travel the entire Nile, the only way through the Sudd at the time was on land, well, land-ish, it is the river, mostly hell, but occasionally very pleasant to drop off points between Malakal and Bor and eventually Juba, was I did not calculate that the river moves from South to North—I don’t know how I made such a huge mistake, fucking maps and western education! Down is downstream, right! No North to South. I didn’t have other options anyways except the river, go via Uganda? No, thank you. Congo maybe. It just did not occur to me with everything going on. Ended up with Balkan mercs, a few Eritrean salesmen, Egyptian sheikh and an Austrian professor who I did Arabic translation for and he paid my rent (got thanked in his book) in the meantime fixing some logistics in Khartoum. Fixed my mistake sort of and got the hell out of there, taking a boat to Malakal. Tough 17 hours on a shitty piece of metal with Shilouk refugees and Muslim traders, ass got cut up on that metal. Falling asleep would mean falling in the water. There was one Chinese dude we dropped off at this random huge factory seemingly in the middle of nowhere, could not piece that one together. After arriving in Malakal it was supposed to take maybe a few days on the river in the Sudd but took around 3 weeks, grabbing an old cattle barge (at the time used for other means) where I got malaria and ran out of my own food and water in two days, (coca-cola commandeered by SPLA was very welcomed). Drinkable water was easy enough to get when not being hoarded by the Northern captain, he went easy on me and we were friends but he still preferred whiskey, cause ok, I guess cause that is what a white dude would drink when already dehyrdated, send it! But when the SPLA took over they made drinking water accessible to everyone from purification systems dropped via UN aid. Did learn how to fish out there and shoot kalashnikovs mostly at crocodiles but often at ghosts, and lights out sharp at nightfall if ever traveling. The commander almost threw me off the boat, an ethnic Nour, for trying to read at night as he lay with his two wives below me on a bunk bed we made out of plywood and oil drums. No one exactly knew who the hell I was way out there, just a guy with a destination, everyone had different theories from missionary, UN, a merc, Western intelligence, journalist, I always just said tourist until getting to Bor. So they all just kind of catered to the mystery, the Northern government was taking a long look into this, but before leaving in Egypt I made friends with a Saudi who told me he would fix it, this guy freaked me the hell out, no idea who he was, I just got the vibes he was trying to bang me. Finally teaming up with a small group of SPLA along Ethiopia, some Ethiopians and some Dinka. Remember different tribes held different allegiances even though sort of together. So I went between Nour, Shilouk and Dinka militias. First time I saw actual war. It was pretty fucked up. I had two hundred dollars in my pocket—embargo made sure of that, but got around using a few tricks I learned from an old Russian pilot and Kenyan UN worker. These techniques eventually helped in the Levant in the coming years. Take away: The river goes upstream South to North, (don’t test this theory by jumping in it trust me), try not to directly drink from it, a lot of schistosomiasis and avoid the hippos.

Ty Liz for the shout out to the maniac I would kill for a Benjamin Labatut-style book where each chapter is about a different dude from any of the twisted sagas y’all chart very nicely here on this excellent pod cast.

Talcum Gladwell

Hi, elder millennial Philadelphian who went to a different, much dumber, high school with some of Peter’s “brothers.” Just want to clarify because Brace said Peter “joins an 11th grade class at a high school” — Peter started from scratch in 11th grade at Central High, which is Philly’s Harvard feeder public school, it’s pretty amazing that he thrived. La Salle College, where Peter went next, neighbors Central’s campus and does not have nearly the prestige as a college that Central enjoys as a high school. So there’s some more context on that part.

Moan_Cumsky

Extremley beautiful country. Was logistics manager for a couple of clinics along the Nile a few years back, we had 8 daily labourers cutting back the swamp every day. Monday they started at one end and Sunday ended at the other end. By that time the first area was more or less grown over again. I saw a banana tree reach 2 metres in length in two weeks time. Easily the most fertile soil I have ever touched my feet on. Very grateful to have wittnesed nature like that. I hope the South Sudanese ever get at chance to catch their footing.

the maniac! ❤️ also un verdor terrible (in english as “how we cease to understand the world”) touches similar themes and is more dense and overwhelming. loved it even more.

Really digging YC’s use of guitar in the last handful of episodes. Oh, and Brace and the good men and women of Sudan are right, shorts are ridiculous. You look ridiculous. Just cut the shit.

Random memory flash. I remember learning about the lost boys from a speaker who visited my elementary school in upstate new york. I wonder if it was Peter? Crazy

Gallo Altanero

The lost boys, former child soldiers constantly stay in contact with me, trying anything to get out of their situation. They do not even know how old they are now. Had to stay with a group that were taken from Kenya along blurred borders and they fought harder than most the adults. We crossed paths every couple weeks in a burned out former Egyptian luxury resort along the Nile. Locked in at night with those kids in suffocating conditions, rats crawling on us and spiders (spiders would eat the rats—so, I much preferred the rats) but the real scary part was all they would talk about was the crazy shit they had done at very young ages in the bush. I eventually just chose to sleep outside with the boars. Did not love the situation, so difficult to help them all, let alone one. They had a full plan to kill certain SPLA commanders at some point. They definitley knew how to do that cause any SPLA soldier leaking info to the North would be target practice for them.

There’s a new book out about fomenko and all that stuff they were trying out in the 90s- The Spirit of Socialism

Homalek

Somehow, Palpatine has returned

fioe06 t

Haven't finished yet, but it's crazy to me that Sudan had the largest communist party in the Arab world, but socialism never really took off. There's a lot of interesting histories of large and influential Arab communist parties—like the Iraqi communist party—who got crushed by the nationalists in the 60s and 70s and never recovered. Nasser, for example, was more anti-communist than anti-brotherhood. Socialist politics were basically dead in the Arab world until the PFLP and George Habash emerge

Lulu

"That's the sort of Northern Irish pedophile party in the UK" lmfao

cellardoor

Brace, Google Stockfish.

TrueAnonPod

Yeah it’s interesting—I think a lot has to do with those parties mostly being organized within urban areas, which in many African states (I know Sudan is Middle East) was oftentimes just the capital. In the Middle East they often had to fend off stronger nationalist parties and royalists alike; oftentimes imo the nationalists were better positioned in the military to start from a position of strength or a coup. CPs often made alliances with these parties that didn’t go well

Isaac

YC playing guitar? Also The MANIAC was so good

Khaqan Ahmad

pls do military logistics planning asmr. you can have fun w the settings, like caesar 's invasion of gaul or Gettysburg

Tarab_ish

I guess he was in LA for a couple years, but SF is prime never wearing shorts territory. There are a couple of warm 'Indian summer' days in like October, but basically every summer day it's roasting 10 miles inland and over the whole state, but it's raining fog, might take a light jacket with you in the city

Natalie

Ok that's true, I've heard the weather there is much more mild! Still though...in my Midwest mind that's nutty

Katharine

My friend is Karen and I didn't know anything about them so I went home and googled it the night I met her, and the first video that popped up on Youtube was a video made by the girl I just met. It freaked me out.

uya

I’ve been watching some of the World Series of Poker and the Main Event is going on right now (biggest/most prestigious single poker tournament every year) and I just watched a guy with a TrueAnon hat outplay Daniel Negreanu (one of the biggest poker players of all time, arguably the greatest of all time) in a hand. If you look at Negreanu’s vlog that came out today (July 9th 2025) on youtube you can see him at 11:22. Just goes to show TrueAnon fans have above average Luck.

Natalie

This was way too entertaining lol, I love when you guys just start giving genuine coup advice at the end and rating it out of 10 lmao #CoupRevieoup

Natalie

We'll wait a few years, I don't mean to frighten you, just wanna be clear <3

Brian Ward

Yeah I'm in saas, semi-automatic weapons as a service

Ryan

You're right about sf but brace grew up in marin and during that time, shorts were widely worn by high school students (such as myself).

Matthew Davis

Are there any plans to restock the "just playin" tote? I'm really bummed that I missed out on that one

Big Dylan

On the note about all these Sudanese guys being based in Utah, I have no idea why but slc has a huge Sudanese population. For some reason the people in charge of resettlement of refugees decided that all Sudanese should go to Utah. I graduated from West High in downtown slc in 2013 and probably 100 of my classmates were Sudanese.

Here is a rule: from Jenin to Ayn el Helwah to Nahr el Bared to Shatila to Yarmouk to any Gaza camp. You walk straight to the PFLP offices upon arrival and do not trust Fatah on their word, only in a bind, PIJ legit. I got lucky going to school with Sumoud Sa’adat, what a heart breaker. Impressive woman. And getting Leila and Mei as contacts in the region. They’ll show you around. Small tale of prom in East Jerusalem with my date, and a devout PFLP member (her parents were actual badass members from the golden era) and with the Spanish ambassador to Gaza’s son sneaking out guns, you can say it was a pretty fun time, of course he had to disappear when the real fun started generally. Even though he had immunity. But yeah getting drunk and causing havoc in the old city, a couple black eyes, good make out sessions on Damascus gate wearing Yahya Ayyash Birzeit alumni shirts the revered GOAT and the PFLP, well most of them, embracing the moment as we came home. They just all knew the freedom is fleeting and any young love you take when you can. Even if a bunch of Israelis are gonna wake up with a shitstorm of property damage and vengeance. What can you say Rim Banna sang the prom and our slow song was “Sarah” (a song about an Israeli sniper shooting a Palestinian kid in her classroom in the head. We just would keep saying, “Sbarro.” What we did was minor, the Shu’fat boys were not as kind to the occupation.

Evan Scott

Really? When i heard that price it seemed high to me. I stocked up a whole ago so i hadnt looked at prices recently, but it seems thar even on the US civilian "bulk" market (so more in the 500-1000 rd range) 30-40cpr is pretty common, and that's in the current market where you can't get ammunition imported from Russia anymore. I'm pretty sure that before the pandemic and the sanctions 15-20cpr was pretty normal for bulk surplus 7.62x39. Im kind of surprised that when you're buying a million rounds at once it's that expensive

ploob

Before my time so I was ballparking. Probably a mix of Berry Compliance and graft..

Evan Scott

Yeah eastern bloc surplus stuff used to be worth it even as prices on aks started to go up just because the ammunition was dirt cheap.

The Adventures of Mac

Calling an assault rifle a submachine gun really makes more sense than calling pistol caliber carbines submachine guns. Assault rifles are a lot closer to actual machine guns.
