So my dad was a special education teacher in MD for many years, and one of the main ways that the private school he taught at was funded was through IEPs (Individual Education Plans). Essentially, if a kid was suspected of having a learning/developmental disability or other qualifying issue, the school district was required to get a specialist assessment and create a plan laying out the additional support/instruction the student needed. Then if the parents could successfully argue that a private institution was better equipped to provide those supports than the local public school, they could enroll them in private school and the public school district was on the hook for part of the tuition and other costs. A well-meaning policy that probably did help some kids but on the aggregate definitely starved public schools of resources, and it's also easily gamed by religious schools or unscrupulous actors.

Some of the orthodox Jewish community talk rang weirdly similar to stuff I’ve seen with Muslims and Hindus lol (probably Christians too? I don’t know much about Christian orthodoxy). Growing up it was common wisdom that the most useless failson cousin in the family would get reallllly into ultra orthodox Islam. The ones I’ve seen usually survived by guilt tripping their relatives for being insufficiently pious until they would fork over some cash.

My younger sister went to camp at the Zone. She enjoyed it fine, but undoubtedly it contributed to the development of her political Zionism that later led her to join the IOF. I’ve had a lot of Jewish friends tell me that these summer camps were what led them to support Israel which is an interesting mechanism of Americanism. One has to note the fluidity of the term camp. I also urge people to keep in mind that the majority of American Orthodox Jews are not child molesting luddites, but are regular progressive leaning people. As leftists we should endeavor not to fall into the trap of ethnic conflict. This is not to excuse their support for genocide, but to keep in mind that most Jews live peaceful lives, and while Oorah is undoubtedly exploitative most people who benefit from its mechanisms are not worthy of your scorn.

We live near Kiryas Joel, about 1.5 hours north of NYC. Major Hasidic community here that has been wreaking havoc on the public school system and general municipal infrastructure for quite some time. Water tables are low, traffic issues, and the once pretty strong school district has been impacted for similar reasons outlined in this ep. The area also has one of the highest rates of measles cases in the country as their community generally doesn't get vaccinated. Fascinating if not insane stuff. We moved here from BK (ironically from East Flatbush, another Hasidic stronghold) after our first was born a few years ago. It was one of the few places regionally where we could afford an ok house to rent. But we can 't wait to get out... if only we could afford to sooner - the whole region is insane price-wise.

I work for, um, a government department in NY, and we regulate all the children’s camps, and I work exclusively in one of the borscht belt counties, so I spend every day in the summer going around to do camp inspections. We have approximately 180 camps in the county, and probably 140 of them are orthodox or Hasidic. At the more Hasidic boys camps, they do almost exclusively yeshiva study all day, all summer, maybe with a break once in awhile for swimming, and the girls camps are like arts and crafts and mostly classroom activities. The paperwork and bureaucratic side is a nightmare because the camp ownership is always very muddled and changes often, and the funding sources are extremely obscure. It’s definitely an experience.

There is such a crazy background context to Lakewood and their relationship with the neighboring towns that's been causing tons of issues that when spoken about makes you sound on the surface antisemitic. But Lakewood residents been accused of encroaching on neighboring towns and aggressively soliciting people to sell their homes in a very uh Isreali settler way. We have our very own ultra-Orthodox enclave here in Canada called Kiryas Tosh. I don't know where they stand on Israel, but the other big difference between them and Lakewood is that their town was founded in the '60s. You might assume that it was founded by diasporic descendants of more observant Jews or something because of that, but you'd be mistaken - the Tosher rebbe was Hungarian and spent much of WWII in a labour camp, but he was so religious that the guards thought he was fucking insane and so basically just let him do whatever he wanted until the Red Army came and liberated everyone.

Also I looked up the Oorah Girls’ Zone and it has such gender-specific amenities as ‘The Baking Room’ and ‘The Culinary Room’, as well as a building called ‘The Coliseum’ which the website does not elaborate upon whatsoever. The Boys’ Zone also has a football event of some kind entitled ‘Payday!’ which is accompanied by a picture of a grinning young Jewish boy holding up a wad of cash. The camp does look fun as hell, in all fairness.
