Best guess, the phones are not listed on any commercial database now. They aren’t linked to any wholesaler or retailer, there’s no record of them anywhere. You pick it up with a guy you capture in say, Pakistan and all it can tell you is who manufactures it. Sort of the same reason cross border special forces in Vietnam often used Swedish and other esoteric firearms - everyone knew who they were the point was if they got captured there was nothing on them that was undeniably an American issued weapon. Plausible deniability doesn’t mean your story has to convince anyone, just that the available evidence doesnt directly contradict it.

Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that Billy comes across sympathetically in the first two chapters about his murder of Mark. And I'm torn between thinking it's hard to comprehend a life as extreme as 14+ years in a secret death squad, and yet noticing how common this story is in American prisons. To anyone who can entertain this sympathy I want you to know that it describes exactly how many violent crimes in the US happen, and who many average convicted murderers & felons really are: people who lost control of their lives in an underworld of drugs and trauma. In that sense there are far more Billy Lavignes (minus the career benefit of impunity) in prison than Ted Bundys. I dunno what else to say about it but obviously not a coincidence that crime and poverty in the imperial core track so closely with the fallout of imperial war.

I finished the book this weekend and I couldn't stop turning back to look at the mugshot of William Levigne and feeling a deep sadness and compassion for him. I was from exactly the same background and shared many of the traits of these guys (in fact, an in-law of mine just join the Dboys). If I hadn't found punk or read a newspaper and alt press, this would have been such an obvious path for someone who wanted to "make a difference" and had some kind of drive. They join up as kids and they dont really know that its all a racket. These guys are told they're doing the right thing by everyone - every where I've seen my operator friend, even liberals are waiting fawningly to ask him about his expertise. And like many people, they don't find out until their 30s how much their ambition and good intention have been used by the worst actors. Billy, Mark, Tim could have been doing so many wonderful things for this country, but instead they dealt drugs and killed people. I pray for them and their families. They didn't deserve to live and die that way

Not this live show, but semi-related because the most hostile I've ever had a security guard be to me for no reason was some lady guard checking bags at the door of TrueAnon's LA live show for the Year of the Smile. She was looking in my purse and then started freaking out about how I was trying to "pull away from her" and that I must be trying to hide something in my purse. I was so confused because I wasn't doing anything, nor had anything in my purse to hide. She just got all hostile on me out of nowhere like a cop who's looking for a reason to fuck your shit up. I think this answers a lot of questions I’ve had about why the CIA seemingly accepted defunding and security breeches by the Trump admin. I kept thinking “what would Dulles have done in this situation?” But it was a rhetorical question because we all know he would have JFK’d Trump’s fat orange ass.
