I just finished Will Potter's book "Little Red Barns" and can't help but think about how he talks about witnessing in the context of animal liberation: "What has brought me back to witnessing, though is realizing that the decision to look at injustice is no passive act. The way the US consulate treated them is nearly the exact same way they treat any US citizen abroad, they will NEVER help you right away and basically don't care about you getting home or your safety. Best they will do is help you call friends and family to beg for money and sometimes in rare cases give you a loan to fly back, lol. I can't speak to the naivete of the Americans on the flotilla, but I do think this outcome shatters some of the illusions observers might have had (myself included) about how media and politicians will respond. Veterans are near deified in American culture, by both Ds and Rs. Whenever I really think about this conflict I feel like myself mainly, but in general all of us have been indicted for our inaction. I've donated, debated, and demonstrated; but at the end of the day it feels like I've done nothing, maybe more then nothing.
