Alright this is kind of a group therapy question, but I’m curious how others are managing. I have a childhood friend who is an ardent Trump supporter. Whenever I talk to her, she always brings up her love for Trump, like she's part of a cult. I’m the kind of person who can listen to anyone and I guess I genuinely want to have life-long friendships in my life (who doesn't?) We’re from Massachusetts, and her family’s roots are in the party, so it's like she’s rooting for the home team, like someone would root for the Red Sox. It's naive ignorance combined with a lack of humility or intellectual curiosity to see things from a new perspective in adulthood. I struggle so much at this point to keep the friendship out of moral disgust. I hardly call anymore. The genocide and the shocking corruption on display as discussed in this episode have frayed my tolerance. I really don’t want to be on a high horse or have righteous indignation against someone who holds little power like myself. But it feels also beyond the pale now—even if you’re naive, the moment has turned you into a fascist apologist. I don’t know. On one hand, it seems extreme to lose friendships; on the other, it feels like there must be some boundary because so many are being harmed. How are other people managing this?
