To be fair to him, Minutemen are sort of in stark opposition to the '10s Mysterious Guy Hardcore ethos, which sought to reify the most reactionary aspects of the hardcore punk aesthetic. Minutemen, from that point of view, as well as many others, are basically Gentle Giant or Steely Dan, so it makes sense to me why he wouldn't be into it, at all.

Listening to the first fifteen minutes and I have no clue how Roblox is tying into this. I play with my kid sometimes, it’s just a million games that are like climbing on shit as a little block man. There’s one button. Jump. The most popular game right now is called grow a garden. You have a plot of land and you buy fruit tree and vegetable seeds and you plant them and they grow and then they grow fruit and vegetables and you sell them to buy more seeds and you get better shit and it’s just trying to make you spend $1.99 so you can have better odds to get the good plants. You just move plants and try and make a cool garden. That’s it. wish this episode had gone more into the roots of this stuff, i find the explanation that it is all just bcoz covid and that the internet is bad for kids basically superficial, like yes, sure, but what are the class dynamics here? it seems there is a lot going unexplored in terms of the strategic relationship between the extreme right's adventurist/stochastic fractions and its institutional ones, their respective relationships to intelligence, etc. Brace raised the point of how this stuff relates to fascism's dependence on mass mobilization and the guest sort of sidetracked it immediately, but that should be the central question if we are trying to understand this stuff, like how does this shit relate to the broader movement for reactionary mobilization? When it is disconnected from that underlying social process, it appears senseless and empty, which is mostly the impression I'm left with after listening 2 this. Anyway, enjoyed folding my laundry to this.

Its teenage narrator is lost in the bowels of the dark web and succumbs to this exact brand of ultra-violent nihilism. My son spent most of third and fourth grade in virtual learning, 2020/2021. In terms of social development, that age range - 9ish to 11ish - is the nascent period where kids move from family as their nucleus to their peers. I don’t think people understand how imperative it is that these kids work through this beginning stage face to face, in schoolwork and in play, vs isolated online where, even in the most balanced household settings, they marinated in a low level of constant stress and uncertainty. It should be no surprise, then, that my son’s grade cohort has a handful of budding psychopaths, something I’ve heard from parents all over the US about the same age range. Many of his teachers said never in their career had they seen kids so impervious to adult guidance. Middle schoolers are an insufferable bunch, by nature and necessity, but also by nature they usually respond to correction and guidance. It may take all of middle school to materialize, but almost all of us outgrow those tendencies. This range of Covid kids are just different, more problems overall and more sticky problems than usual. That’s not to say that younger or older kids did not experience their own struggles, but the younger kids are still in the developmental stage of learning and following rules, of looking to adults for guidance. Older kids (9th/10th grade) have already gone through the beginning stage of understanding yourself in relation to your peers, and they are in the period of narrowing down their convictions and beliefs within the peer groups they now identify with. My daughter started kindergarten online, one might think that would really screw kids up but honestly, it was more of a delay in learning school behaviors than a faulty foundation. By 3rd or 4th grade they had figured out how to behave in school. Based on the peer conflicts and interaction in her grade group during the grades my son missed in person, I totally get how being online and isolated desensitized the Covid kids during those grades. You need to see the real time effects of saying stupid shit, shoving and punching, etc. It’s really messed up.

I just felt that the episode approached the topic superficially, or got caught up on trivial details, and that some things were taken for granted that should have been interrogated. And like, in a way that I know they are capable of. Again, it'd be silly to expect a podcast to put forward a strong position on historical materialism.

no, no worries. there's strong and weak historical materialism; is it emerging from collective practice or individual study? you can't expect too much from weak hismat, but it can still make contributions and generally 'work' insofar as it recognizes that theory isn't coincident with reality. to speak of the general we have to speak of the particular, which means grasping a thing's internal structure and also its relationship to other things (concretely, through what channels does the relationship exist?). In other words, it isn't enough to say stochastic nihilistic terrorism is a manifestation of reactionary mobilization, or of the crisis in US imperialism, or of "the essential contradictions of capitalism playing themselves out". Marxism isn't a set of phrases which can explain away historical events. We have to think concretely and try to grasp how the component parts of any given thing actually compose it, and drive its development in the real world, and how its development affects and is affected by the development of other things in a given system; this is the only basis on which "the essential contradictions of capitalism" can mean something. Anyway, this is all kinda besides the point I was making on the episode, which is basically that it was narrow-er than usual.

i could write an essay on this cus i watched it happen growing up but sam hyde is connected to the rlly online / "underground" rap scene via the group Shed Theory (most famous member Joeyy) whose influence is waning thankfully, but whom afaik he still lives and makes content with in Providence, RI. this ties back to a lot of things like Bladee, drain gang, etc. and the popularity of that type of rlly dissociated music and detachment from life (sometimes building into rlly intense drug habits ofc) snd its themes of depression snd alienation and whatever. it's like a lot of punk where there was a very organic soundcloud scene and it held a lot of leftist politics and queer, trans, poc members (although a lot of this was a lot more than just Bladee + co influence, that's the common thread) and then it started to also have nazis. they live in this racist performance of being a rapper and simultaneously being indebted to black culture and really adverse to blackness which is bizarre to watch. a lot of the pioneers of the sounds that Shed Theory drew on, or at least their fans knew, were black queer and or trans, and yet of course that group is very bigoted (even directly towards some of said pioneers). via joeyy's success and extreme irony rap a lot of people were sucked into nazism/plainly extremely irony-poisoned hateful politics and it was like 99% white men or a specific type. what i liked growing up changed a lot but even the very true to soundcloud, "underground" stuff has a lot of right wing fans and actors still, particularly of the antisemitic, conspiracy sort. hopefully this isnt too long but this is a piece of the puzzle i imagine not many will know here and it definitely plays a part in some ofn the instagram reel + tiktok recruitment that went on. doubt many of these types went on to stuff so extreme as this, but they are a lot further right than their peers.

Kinda unrelated but this ep reminded me of this thing that happened—I post my anime fan art on twitter (I’m an adult btw) and 1 time someone from EDtwt followed me. I ended up checking out their acct and found nothing in their likes or RTs that had anything to do w the content I post or anime in general. That wasn’t that weird but I ended up seeing they liked or rted a pic of someone who cut themselves through an inch of skin. Their caption was proud of it too. I was so freaked out I blocked them and never looked back. It’s possible they followed me on accident but I also wonder if they purposefully seek attention from strangers on the internet. Idk. HI Ali, I quickly looked at the digital copies of the 4 out of 5 books that you mentioned: I couldn't find any mention of Column 88 in the 98 edition of the book Women and Fasscism (it also doesn't mention Gladio), Black Sun mentions only the journal of that name published by Tony Williams (Myatt's satanist friend) not the group, The Dark Side book mentiones briefly Column 88 and says that the group was connected with the miltary, organized training camps, and that Ian Souter Clarence organized safe houses for german terrorists (which is also discussed in the documentary I sent a link for), and Fascism in Britain also only briefly mentions Column 88, and doesn't mention Gladio in the book at all. For some time I tried finding a copy of Ray Hill's book, because I suspect that one has most stuff on Column 88 (these other books you mentioned ussually cite Hill's book when it comes to Column 88), because Hill was an actuall member of the group. But Hill did this research as an undercover agent of Searchlight, so we again come to the same point. Do you perhaps have a digital copy of Hill's book?

It's crazy how much personal experience I have with O9A and 764 because of the overlap with the My Little Pony Tulpamancer community. I think one thing that the person interviewed here did wrong though is understandably explaining the eyebrow raising connections to Russian intelligence but not mentioning the MASSIVE influence from Azov and Right Sector linked Ukranian neonazi groups on 764 and The Comm. That seems like a glaring, purposeful ommission given how much reporting he's done on Azov specifically.
