I’ve lived in apartments or condos my whole life, barking dogs are the top nuisance. I’m not talking about periodic barking, when someone knocks or walks by - dogs bark, that’s one of their top things to do. The problem is sustained barking, we’re talking 15 mins or more with no pause, where the owner is almost certainly not at home, or they don’t give a shit. The saddest I’ve encountered was a recent neighbor below us that had two dogs, one of which was so old she often had to physically carry him outside. He would whine/cry/bark for hours, I don’t know how else to describe it. It sounded like a kid crying. Admittedly I’ve never owned a dog. They are cute and so genuine but I handle the way they smell, even the clean ones, and it was hard enough to change diapers, I’m not doing that again for years on end. So I don’t know if there’s any relation to the quality of their bark and the intention behind it. And do they need to have more stimulation that if their owners are gone all of the day? And can you teach then to not bark when they’re alone? Bottom line is that in a multifamily dwelling, you can be intruding on others’ “repose”. In case this sounds like cataganda, if cats did the same thing or if they otherwise wreck things, then the same standard should apply. It’s not the animal’s fault, it’s the owners.

I dont disagree with Liz on the cat smell thing, even though I love cats and have 3. The only real solution I think is having a catio litter box situation or cat that poops outside. That said, dogs can and do create just as much of a mess.(source I grew up with mostly dogs. Landlord deference to cats over dogs w/ the expectation that they'll do less damage is just plain wrong. It really depends on the individual cat or dog.

On the question of participating in Democratic TM politics, I think Mandanis success despite the lack of support from democratic leadership has been far more radicalizing for the democratic constituencies than if Mamdani had never run. I believe in open democracy, people will naturally gravitate towards socialist politics, I mean that’s what fueled the French Revolution. People are seeing corruption laid bare before them as the intentions of capital are made irrefutable. I actually think republicans are correct in that democratic voters actually are a bunch of communists, but they have simply resigned themselves to the capitalist system in which we live. People’s political convictions change with the self-evidence of success, all we need to do to turn democrats into socialists is simply win. Perhaps our victory will be denied by the corrupt system, but it’s the denial of regular legal mechanisms that will push people into super legal mechanisms of revolution. It’s always better to win.

Could you guys do an episode on data centers, and all the controversies? I’d be interested to hear Liz’s opinion on the financial side of things because the offer municipalities a ton of money for funding, and really don’t take up that much water compared to other businesses. I follow some very effective altruistic accounts on Twitter to get a better idea of the reality of the pros and cons because I want to hear opposing POV on it, and I feel like Truanon is due for an ep about it, since it is very techy and suspicious. Andy Masley on Twitter kind of turned me away from being 100% opposed to them after reading his Substack, but I also think he discounts the corruption/ job replacing part of the whole industry that scares people the most. Especially since some states have passed laws that are allowing utility companies to charge more for the year 2026 in anticipation of the rising costs to minimize the year to year change in rates, which I think obfuscates the whole industry even more in the eyes of the public.

I love dogs and cats. Everyone knows that cat pee and poo smell unnecessarily bad but pick up a cat and sniff it’s back. They don’t smell. Dogs smell. They are wonderful people but they smell. And dog people smell like dogs. It’s fine, I don’t judge but if you’re in contact with a dog everytime you go home, it’s unavoidable. Liz probably just can’t tell because she is only around white people who also all smell like dogs. I didn’t grow up with any pets and I frequently smelled dog on people. I never smelled cat on people. Cat pee/poop in peoples’ homes, sure. But not on people outside of their homes. Hmm, I haven’t heard the bit about antibiotics. I’m guessing companies could hypothetically just dump that water into the environment and cause some environmental damage that way, but that Substack I referenced does do a good job of breaking down how much less water a data center uses than other businesses, I’d recommend you read it just to see the data that makes a lot of these centrist types love data centers so much. The part I’m suspicious of is the expected usage rates of a bunch of these data centers getting built and used, along with the lobbying aspect to keep the raising rates hidden from the public eye. And then of course how much funding could be given to municipalities, if let’s say halfway through the construction these projects get stalled and these companies lose large amounts of funding/ construction costs raise “unexpectedly”

Cat owners and their apartments only smell like cat if the owner is a bad cat owner. If, when you’re home, you are not cleaning your cat’s litter box shortly after they use it, and cleaning it as soon as you come home or wake up, you are a bad cat owner. No one has a problem taking their dogs outside when they need to go, you shouldn’t have a problem taking your cat’s shit and dirty litter out once they use their box. Clumping litter is the norm and easily available. There is no reason not to do this. If your cat isn’t using the box it is sick or you’re doing something wrong. All cats should be fixed. And they do not “spray” when they are. Cats, unlike, dogs, in and of themselves do not smell. And they do not cause destructing unless you’re not properly training them to use their scratching posts. And even then, they’ve gotta be pretty damn tenacious to actually damage anything other than your furniture, not an apartment itself. Dogs have a much higher capacity to destroy shit. In short, if you have friends that smell like cat, you should be mad at them on behalf of the cat.

I think Liz is being totally realistic. Grew up with a beagle, love all god’s creatures and it seems they love me. Somehow I ended up being a regular cat sitter in my twenties, but was never interested in having one. From a sample size of countless cats and dogs and owners, I’ve only ever met one cat so well behaved and clean I allow her to stay with me. She is perfection. She is rare. She is my princess shining star baby girl. Smell really depends on the cleaning habits of the owner and the kind of place they live in: some are harder to keep free of hair/dander/etc than others. I think most people themselves aren’t clean enough/good enough at thorough regular cleaning to offset the smell potential of more than one cat OR dog.
