Comrade Cat

I have a feeling that Maduro sent some of his retinue to escort the Chinese special envoy and the US found a window to kidnap him during that time and just went for it. All of these loose ends to me seem like parts of a plan that was abandoned at the last minute for an opportunistic smash-and-grab.

Comrade Cat

Also I think securing Venezuela's oil makes a lot more sense for hedging against hitting Iran again. More as a way to help assuage the skittish market that the oil will keep flowing even when the bombs are dropping.

You know who deserves to be appointed “Transitional President” of Venezuela? Hillary Clinton! Yes, Venezuela deserves better, but Hillary deserves her own bathetic Maximiliana!

Elsie Hupp

Don’t make him sound cool, though. I’m hoping the narcos will save us from the pedos!

Elsie Hupp

The fact that Maduro didn’t get straight-up shot in the head in his bedroom I would say means that Maduro is the real winner here. Just… make sure the security cameras are working outside his jail cell, you know? 😅

Zzz

I wouldn't be surprised lol I was genuinely shocked finding out she's into astrology

Elsie Hupp

My fanfiction here is that this is the culmination of generations of rivalry between the narcos and the pedos. Maduro is actually doing deep cover to rescue the mole children from the tunnels under Central Park. The drone strikes against Venezuelan fishing boats were actually carried out by Ghislaine Maxwell’s TerraMar Project, and she was also using the underage girls she was sex trafficking for the purpose of fighting drug traffickers. This also explains the Windsors: Liz Windsor was the narco-in-chief, but she had a soft spot for her younger son, Andrew, which allowed him to become a narco-pedo double agent, and it took her death for Chuck Windsor to put an end to that. So here’s hoping the narcos save us from the pedos! 😅 (MadurAnon? I hardly know her!)

The level of showmanship from the US is astounding. The talk around Cuba, Greenland, and Iran specifically seem like a scare tactic but idk everything is chaotic af. The meme-ification and spectacle of it all has its consequences and we feel it all around. No one is being checked, lawlessness run amuck, civil unrest and quality of life diminished. I finished the fort Bragg Cartel by Seth Harp the day of Maduro's abduction, and for all the books and my conclusions about the US' evil, I always liked to imagine it as an evil, competent empire in service to capital. Now, and however moralistic and thus cringe this may sound, I have realised that it is all the above, but primarily the US and the tip of its spear are a death cult; dedicated to death for its own merits, they have consiousciouly or unconsciously realised that nothing matters and that we are heading towards an ending. I don't think the US empire is ending, not for a long while yet, but with how some are acting it's really giving me prelude to the collapse of the USSR, just x1000 worse because the last thing to collapse in the US will be the army and financial institutions.

Bro the Yankees are washed. If this was 50 years ago the entire Chavista government would've been decapitated and an organized golpista force spearheaded by Machado herself would've seized the presidential palace. Instead we just have overgrown toddler Stephen Miller loudly proclaiming America's imperial might while accomplishing something far less impressive than what Poppy Bush does for fun on the weekends.

Haven’t listened yet, but Adam Tooze’s substack has some good articles regarding the whole situation.

swervegriffin

Why are these trueanon takes on South American US coups so confusing confusing. It’s all corrupt conspiracy unless the country is a Tepid social democracy that doesn’t threaten imperialism whatsoever like Brazil.

swervegriffin

Like why even cite imperialist media like Reuters/NYT/Miami herald as if it’s fact.

swervegriffin

I’m an hour into the episode I feel like this is a joke 😭

Because Venezuela is confusing. That's what happens when you have active, contemporary conflict: information is distorted by active warfare and propaganda, so the only thing possible is to deduce/make educated guesses.

RE: who is in the Space Force? IIRC there was some evidence that they started just moving the trans people there, for reasons I honestly cant recall. I think it was meant to be either a mild desk job punishment or a way of avoiding dealing with ever changing requirements

What are the documented crimes of Maduro? Sounds like a lot of "Victims of Communism" stuff insofar as the Chavez regime putting down the criminals that ran the country before the revolution.

Floodlights

1/3 is also the birthday of our 3rd favorite American hero, Kyle Rittenhouse

swervegriffin

I’m gonna need to relisten to the episode I just am like why is it more complicated than the us illegally arrested a sovereign leader, killed 80+, and is doing obvious imperialism. I get that you’re saying those sources lied but like you’re also saying that Maduro and delay negotiated to be arrested at the expense of their country right? And that they’re agreeing to let the us take all of their oil. I agree with your analysis of trumps cabinet but I find it weird to assume these imperialist sources are not just categorically false

Antipaganda

Well, trans people are more used to cyborgism and biotech, so they are most suited to be our future astro-army when we invade China's space elevator and pretend we built it.

hey_boo

FR. The lawless chucklefucks committing these war crimes think it’s COD or some other stupid video game. Fuck all these people.

hey_boo

But ghosts are real! How do you explain half of the Democratic Party!

Sam Stephens

one of the five dumbest people from my high school is in the space force.

TrueAnonPod

I don't think we said anything definite on Maduro or Delcy; we laid out what we think are reasonable possibilties. One could also spin it that Maduro was given up to benefit his country, to avoid an invasion or to lift sanctions etc etc. We don't know, which I hope we made explicit in the episode. Writing off all mainstream media as categorically untrue makes it difficult to analyze situations dialectically; sometimes what they report is not false, other times they're serving as messengers for the government or factions within the government.

swervegriffin

Ok but like… them saying that Maduro negotiated his own arrest months in advance is a serious claim that would benefit imperialism in (sorry) manufacturing consent for his illegal removal, right? I get that you said we can’t trust them but you ran with that as like partially true. Later in the ep you said Maduro has been open to allowing the us industry in so that he can get his ICC case thrown out, again basing that in us media reporting and caveating that somewhat. How big are these grains of salt, and where do you think the truth is?

Alexander

During a game of trivial pursuit over the holidays this was one of the questions that came up for me

Special Adeline

I could be wrong though because as stated I'm a fairly low IQ individual I just have a hard time believing Trump has any back scene Cold War plans with all this considering how much everything he does is on a whim

TrueAnonPod

The security lapses or betrayal that led to the US being able to kidnap the sitting president of a large country while taking 0 casualties lends itself to a lot of speculation, and we tried to be clear we do not know for a fact what the circumstances that led to that moment were.

Daniel

2.5 hour conversation about oil and not one mention of climate change lol

swervegriffin

Speculation that intelligence may have had an insider makes sense but to consider it went as high up as Maduro himself (and delcy) is where I disagree. Is this what you’re implying in the episode? Also a lot of his security gave their lives defending him, I don’t think it’s fair to represent it completely as a stand down order, unless there’s evidence.

Daniel

Anyone else remember we have less than 5 years to meet the 50% reduction in global emissions as agreed upon at the 2014 Paris Climate accords???

Joey

gta vice city came out the same week YC went to israel & his parents would NOT hear the last of it

Christopher Price

what do you want them to say? because to the people like Trump who are coveting the oil, climate change, the Paris accords, etc are fake and gay. there's no meat there.

Quinn

Maduro looks badass in all the photos

TrueAnonPod

Yes, we mention all of this within the episode. I think speculation is going to happen with security lapses this egregious, but we lay out a wide range of options of what might have led to this and explicitly and repeatedly throughout the episode do not endorse any one of them as absolute fact.

J HUTCH

sure, the farce of benevolent US world governance has been abandoned (this I agree is very notable), but this country hasn't been perceived as a good faith actor in bilateral or multilateral negotiations in half a century. from the asymmetric structuring of international organizations to recurring unilateral deployments of force, I'm stunned to hear eulogising over the waning of US soft power as if it ever existed beyond the value of our cultural exports. you sound like Joe nye lmao huge fan btw

Victoria

We should call her Machado About Nothing. Unless you make that joke later in the episode I’m only halfway thru

mitchell

Some of the conflicting reasoning behind the invasion/kidnapping reminds me of the conflicting reasoning behind the tariffs, in that I assume it’s people trying to backfill a reason when there is none and Trump is just doing all this because he’s stupid/trying to look cool on TV

Can't believe inempt empire theory is still alive and well in 2026.

Alec

Oil does have a future: the military. It is not interested in electrification even though it might pay lip service to caring about climate change. Tanks will continue to be fueled by oil. Planes too. Energy density of batteries isn’t there for military vehicles. Also charging the battery of an M1 tank is kind of a goofy proposition: electrical grids are unreliable in war zones at best. So they’ll be using generators… which burn diesel or methane. Strategic supply chains for militaries and the machines of destruction themselves will continue to be powered by fossil fuels. You can’t realistically airdrop an external battery for an M1 tank, but you can airdrop diesel fuel.

Alec

My friend did research for his PHD in the electrification of military aircraft and they (the US airforce) did not give a fuck

bud dustin

SwagMasta420

This is the start of the American Anschluss, weak players get eaten up by the fascists and anyone who sees what's coming next will try to get into the best position possible. Whether that's Europe submitting to the Reich for another go or Russia and China consolidating.

Daniel

jus saying no one ever talks about climate change anymore. But that's bc it is in fact v fake and gay

.

"The concentration camp was never the normal condition for the average gentile German. Unless one were Jewish, or poor and unemployed, or of active leftist persuasion or otherwise openly anti-Nazi, Germany from 1933 until well into the war was not a nightmarish place. All the "good Germans" had to do was obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, avoid any sign of political heterodoxy, and look the other way when unions were busted and troublesome people disappeared. Since many "middle Americans" already obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, are themselves distrustful of political heterodoxy, and applaud when unions are broken and troublesome people are disposed of, they probably could live without too much personal torment in a fascist state — some of them certainly seem eager to do so”

Shit Daniel I’m so sorry to tell you once we blew through 1.5 and 2 those conversations became literally pointless. We can’t do shit while the US military continues to be the biggest emitter on the planet and only has more wars plotted out for the foreseeable future. We all done like turkeys together. We’re just in different parts of the oven. AI and Crypto escalating and compounding these issues makes this discussion even more pointless. All we can really do now is organise and create a foundation for mutual aid and support to meet this actual future. Look out for and look after each other and hunker the fuck down.

The point about the "show" being more real than the outcome of any particular action is so astute - we're left groping in the dark for coherent motivations, when the actual explanation is that it gives the people who make up the regime a chance to perform for the cameras in a certain way that makes them feel fulfilled. This is particularly evident when you listen to Hegseth. Donald Trump is, and always has been, first and foremost an entertainment product and his Presidency is not different. The propaganda doesn't exist to justify the act, the act exists to justify the propaganda.

Re: the space force, I met a guy in the space force at a bar just before Christmas who just seemed like a normal career military guy (army->navy->space force) and just really liked drinking and gambling. That is to say, they’re taking the same ppl that the other branches are taking

Andrew May

Thanks for another great episode, gumshoes. My guts are in knots that I did enjoy loosening with the laughs. Do you guys know Joan Didion’s collection of essays called Political Fictions? Or for that matter her books Salvador and Miami (“where Fidel Castro raised money to overthrow Batista and where two generations of Castro's enemies have raised armies to overthrow him, so far without success. It is where the bitter opera of Cuban exile intersects with the cynicism of U.S. foreign policy. It is a city whose skyrocketing murder rate is fueled by the cocaine trade, racial discontent, and an undeclared war on the island ninety miles to the south.”)? I sometimes feel like we’re stuck back then in this eternal recurrence. Maybe we never actually left, and political theater has always been running. In one of those (or maybe it’s in Fixed Ideas) she says how adroit the US has become since 1945 at staging its own domestic dramas within the crises it creates in other countries. Here we go never again.

Andrew May

Our newest political fictions

Andrew May

found it (it was Fixed Ideas, 2003): “‘This is in fact the kind of story we expect to hear about our elected officials,’ I wrote in 1988: “We not only expect them to use other nations as changeable scrims in the theater of domestic politics but encourage them to do so. After the April 1961 failure of the Bay of Pigs, John Kennedy's approval rating was four points higher than it had been in March. After the 1965 intervention in the Dominican Republic, Lyndon Johnson's approval rating rose six points. After the 1983 invasion of Grenada, Ronald Reagan's approval rating rose four points, and what was that winter referred to in Washington as ‘Lebanon’—the sending of American marines into Beirut, the killing of 241, and the subsequent pullout—was, in the afterglow of this certified success in the Caribbean, largely forgotten.” “That was 1988. Fourteen years later, we were again watching the scrims being changed, but in a theater we did not own. The Middle East was not Grenada. It was not the Dominican Republic. It was not, as they used to say in Washington about the Caribbean, "our lake." It was nitroglycerin, an unstable part of the world” (p.33–34) And it goes on and on from there.

Beeethan

Ahh got it thank you

Dirty truths by Michael Parenti

Aaron Friedland

There’s no reason to not stockpile oil, they can/already do control prices on it. Part of me wonders if some of this also because Biden emptied out that strategic fuel reserve or whatever during Covid. Just to undo something Biden did

Aaron Friedland

I doubt the specifically told them long before but you would give a heads up in the most formal sense as the operation goes down. But also doing it with the Chinese there and causing potential escalation would have only been a nice side bonus for the current fed

ronnylongjohns

I thought there are several facilities in the US that are for the heavy stuff (whatever it's called) and those refineries have been operating under capacity.

ERIC

Sweet crude is processed in limited capacity. We have historically been domestically refining heavy (sour) crude and are at capscity. Greedy oil companies don't want to retro fit or build new capacity for the sweet (shale) crude. It is mostly exported. I think canada is big market? I am commenting because they seem to recognize the crude differences and what control of a large heavy crude supply would mean for markets. We can extract tons of our sweet crude domestically but can't process it.

ronnylongjohns

Yeah I need to look up that acronym lol

The number 1 export from Canada to the United States is tar sands oil converted to synthetic crude that gets refined in the Koch refineries in Minnesota and Texas. Nearly identical quality oil as what is in Venezuela.

ERIC

Do you know who is buying the sweet stuff we are pulling out of the Permian basin? Is it Europe? The low sulfur content does make better petroleum products. Seems like our regulation relaxation favors exporting as much light crude as possible.

Liz, with regards to your point on trumps war efforts as a managed spectacle of conflict - Kit Klarenberg’s recent substack article on British supported information warfare and propaganda during the Slovene 10 day war of 1991 seems a relevant antecedent. Shit like this is why there is no coherent leftist movement in America. American workers don’t give a fuck about the negligible difference to climate change a shitty electric stove will provide. This is lib shit

True Anon rule: Disperse anti-aircraft facilities early in case of hostile military build-up.

Matthew Klein tweeted, sorry x-ed, that this is America's Suez Moment. Only time will tell.

Drones are powered by batteries though

Alec

Depends on the drone.

Can you think of any solutions to the problem of our president (whose son is on the board of Kalshi) and our media (who has partnered with Kalshi) seemingly being unable to settle on a truth even though everyone has already seen the proof? Related thought, I saw a CBS TikTok the other day about a sports controversy, which I love to analyze. It was the Auburn buzzer beater, and it was notable because: it shows a replay, and in that replay you can very very clearly see that the ball is feet from the shooter’s hands with time still on the clock, and then it shows a different angle and in the second replay you can very clearly see that the ball is still in his hand while the clock displays no time left. The video does not add commentary, and the comment section seems to be arguing about anything except why the video is showing two entirely different realities. They can just say that this was an editing mistake, and maybe it is, but it stood out to me after this week’s atrocities. It really feels like the disagreements between people and the confusion about reality is a feature of the media’s lies, not an unfortunate bug.

Josh

Btw, this new conspiracy theory was inspired by the Kalshi discussion, especially Liz’s line about “information is meta now.”

Increasingly thinking we're deep into end-of-days territory. To be honest, I'm very tired so I almost welcome it.

"the theatrics seem more important than the rest" yeah idk Nazis just really love merging politics and theatrics, hence that definition of fascism as 'politics as aesthetics'. Put on a show not just because you're trying to distract people from other work (like the failed Putin assassination) but like...the theatrics are also the goal, because the show is so integral to governing for them.

Doug Cartel

People said this after every famine for thousands of years so until the nukes go off I'm not going to bother with that mindset

Praxcheat

did the US use a new sonic or electric weapon in Venezuela? the post is quoting that fake ass x post so i cant tell

B

I'm not talking to "American Workers", I'm talking to you. You're being disingenuous and I find it silly lol. "the American worker is this, the American worker is that, the American worker thinks this!!!!" Gimme a break bozo

Robert Farrell

Given there's never been a period in history when such a collection of stupid cunts has been in charge at the White House I reckon your nukes could be fairly close.

I mean they need oil to go to war no? The country isn’t really doing that well economically, but has all of these bombs theyre sitting on. It’s like our only card after 50 years of over investment in the wrong sectors.

Rubio’s family initially came to the US while Batista was in power, he just lies about his family being political exiles under Castro

I believe the official story is that the electric grid attack was a cybersecurity hack based off intelligence gathering. I think if something new was used the general public would have figured it out by now.

The manpads are another issue but a big element of the lack of air defense was probably down to the fact that anyone in a dedicated air defense unit would know that one of the biggest strengths of US airpower is suppression of enemy air defense (or SEAD 🤓 I'm gay and autistic), things would be different in a country with more advanced equipment but the iraq and Balkan wars gave the navy and air force a ton of experience with fighting against the older integrated air defense systems fielded by former soviet allies, using the radar that guides those longer range missiles is like turning on a flashlight in a dark room, there's an electronic attack variant of the f/a-18 that can both jam those radars to prevent a lock and fire a very big and fast anti-radiation missile that either follows the radar beam back to its source or targets its last known location if the radar is turned off; even if you do burn through the jamming and get a shot off, something like an S-300 is gonna produce a huge thermal signature that anything in the area with a flir camera will pick up immediately especially at night. So if youre not prepared to shoot with the engine running and drive like hell theres a pretty high probability that a missile is gonna land in your vicinity within a few minutes (and S-300s are huge, they might not even have time to finish lowering the launch tubes and stowing away the hydraulic support feet before something nasty comes flying back at you. In desert storm and bosnia they had enough of those long range weapons to at least believe they might be able to win by attrition, but I don't think that was the case here; I don't doubt these guys would risk their lives for their country but it comes down to bravery vs stupidity and I don't blame those crews for not wanting to paint a target on their backs for a chance at shooting down a single f/a-18 in a conventional engagement they were never gonna win

The Yeonmi Park left no crumbs but was a good one.

I wonder if the Venezuela oil grab is intended to bolster American oil companies’ positions in anticipation of a war with Iran, which would destroy much of the oil infrastructure of the gulf Arab states

Just listened to someone named Cem Karsan give his opinion on Greenland saying the US won't "invade" Greenland, but is rather using this power approach/ tactic to prepare Europe for military spending and presence on ground
