I need to push back on Bridget a bit here, Mormon mommy bloggers make money from blogging but that has little to do with why mommy blogging blossomed in Utah. There was/still is a whole marketing campaign by the LDS church to push Mormons to get online and show off their families to bring people into the faith. It went hand in hand with their “I’m a Mormon” campaign (which they stole from Scientology btw). It’s part of their American exceptionalism bullshit and their visioned takeover of American government. Tim Ballard, operation Underground Railroad, mitt Romney, ruby franke, Chad and Lori daybell…. It’s all connected under the LDS umbrella.

Devout mormons who live in strict adherence to the churches teachings (no drinking, no coffee, no sex out of wedlock, no rates R movies, wearing garments, etc) are not called “fundamentalists.” Those are just regular Mormons. Growing up in the church we referred to Mormons who didn’t follow the rules as “jack mormons” and they were perceived as the anomaly. While some teachings probably fall under the broader umbrella of fundamentalist Christianity, “Fundamentalist Mormon” refers to people who practice polygamy and other teachings that have long been abandoned by the mainstream church. Its a misrepresentation to conflate the Momtok lifestyle with that of an average Mormon (especially outside of Utah). My guess is most active church members resent the show & had it been made 10+ years ago they all would have been excommunicated.

She briefly touched on it when she mentioned how the internet foundations were also built in SLC, not just Silicon Valley- one part would’ve been contextual was that graduation speech at BYU in what, 2006? Where the president of the university/church was like “your mission is to go online and spread the message of Mormonism.” And you know what, they did lol. I listened to that entire season of Some Place Underneath’s “WTF LDS” and they go DEEEEP into the Mormon Church & culture highly recommended if you haven’t already listened? I jolted at the guest’s reminder that the University of Utah was a major node of ARPAnet, which I think Yasha Levine mostly discusses as a California-based project in Surveillance Valley, right? Her descrip of Mormons as pillars of big tech makes me want to dig up the old eps about mormonism’s CIA partnerships, not for esoteric gratification but just to take them seriously as an entrenched engine of US capitalism. The structure of the ep is great and explains how the 2008 recession forced the business model of the trashy reality show industry to adapt from having the women stars portraying unironic glam luxury lifestyles to hustlers trying to graduate from self-pimping cast serfdom as unicorn entrepreneurs, to cottage mom-and-pop small business owners in Utah selling guided tours of their plantation mansions. I think there’s still lots of meaty analysis to add onto this skeleton like the parallel transformations of aspirational male hustler archetypes (like how Zuck and Silicon Valley founders were pedestalized as geniuses from like 2005-mid2010s), I liked this a lot. Much better than that sports guy who was stressed about degeneration of the sports world due to esoteric malign Russian influence but not a coherent argument and storyline like this guest.

Have had intimate insight into a Mormon household and the sense I got is that they're sort of evangelical protestants. As business/capital oriented as protestants (many work tech and finance jobs) and gripped by a cluster of neuroses about the Last Judgement. A lot of it feeds into prophecies about Israel. They reminded me of scientologists, too, especially with all the private ceremonies, the secret names given therein, and the cleanly, almost b2b saas presentation. The women, at least in the family I knew, were deeply miserable and repressed and there was an unmistakably pedophilic aroma to all the patriarchs.

If we never get another reality tv ep no big, but I do think there’s something to be said about the commodification of domestic and sexual violence on slomw. Obviously the Marciano lawsuit, the Taylor and Dakota situation , Mikayla’s discussions of her past, and even whatever Jen and Zac have going on. In the absence of old school conflict (as described in the ep) they have turned to these really heavy assaults as markers of womanhood and made discussing them in air empowerment. To the point where this backfires on management and triggered the cancelling of the Taylor’s season of the bachelorette. Lots of factors here: me too, Mormonism, lack of other conflict making the producers mine this, etc

Would they be excommunicated? Thr Church seems busy excommunicating people like Natasha Helfer or John Dehlin but never the Lori Vallows, or Ruby Frankes. Mormon culture seems to really love proselytising on the internet. There is evidence lds church pays some influencers for their work. They even issued some statement condemning the show. I think that's their punishment because they still get the publicity and excommunication of such public figures would probaly be a bad pr for a church that tries to apeal to people outside of mormon corridor. While these girls and their families for the most part are not active and the active ones seem nuanced they really showcase how growng up in the mormon cultural affects their adult lives (I'm nevermo but just had a hyperfixation on mormon for years now).

They don’t really excommunicate people anymore to my understanding, but yes I do think they would have been at one point. I know someone personally who was disfellowshipped after confessing to their bishop of premarital sex. They only took disciplinary action in response to “sexual sin” for church members who were endowed in the temple. I think many of the subjects on secret wives were married in the temple which means they would have been endowed. A public swinging scandal would have been definite grounds for excommunication a decade or two prior, especially perpetrated by a woman. Not saying it’s right obviously but I have heard of disciplinary hearings for less

This is likely a regional thing but I served a mission in Tahiti in 2012 and it was extremely common to meet endowed members who had been excommunicated for having children out of wedlock

My husband is always so impressed by like Tracy Letts and all the a Artistes of Steppenwolf, etc. And he really sticks his nose up so high in the rarefied air when I catch up on my RHO___'s. So on the plane recently I decided to watch August, Osage County so he would love me more and hold me in higher regard, and guess what? It was pretty much a housewives reunion. What a charade! Tracy Letts didn't even have to find these people and manipulate them over years and years to get them to blurt out each other's family secrets over a tense meal. He just wrote down the words and hired people to say them!!! it's all one big bamboozle

The funny thing is that when I was a freshman at byu in 2005, all the byu bishops were strongly encouraging us to get off Facebook lol. And YouTube was banned on campus. The church did a pretty huge about face soon after that when they realized they could use the internet/social media for proselytizing.

@Jlev like 5 years ago or so Matt Christman did a 2 or 3 part series about the history of Mormonism which I remember finding quite interesting, especially the varied early history of violence being enacted against them and by them. And while I haven't read the non-fiction book it was based off of, I thought the TV adaptation of Under the Banner of Heaven was quite good

Mormons are also obsessed with family history (I guess if you’re going to be on a planet for eternity with all of your family you’d want to have some intel) and the church explicitly pushes blogs/social media as a way to preserve your family history/heritage for your future relatives. Lots of early adoption of blogging too to document missions since they have limited communication with family too
