Can't wait to be aurally pleasured by my favorite podcasters again

Jingle Jangler

Stunned this is the title of a non brace ep

Subodh Kafle

Is my brain fucked that I saw the notification with the episode title and immediately knew it was going to be about Eliezer Yudkowsky?

JDF

LizAnon on a HEATER folks 🔥

Zachy

was wondering what brace’s retweets were all about

Mungo Franczak

It’s called Super Intelligence (SI) now, by the way.

Happening to check this right before bath time yay. Time to make a mess

GermsEnjoyer

You posted this at the very end of my shift so I will be listening to this tomorrow. Fuck you.

Meletios

Great Sizzling Dragon Bogies!

Lee Borocz-Johnson

For a second I thought this was gonna be featuring the smart-ass gentlemen of Joy Tactics, but then I saw the description and remembered about the rationalist Harry Potter fan fic. I wish you guys would get Aella on the show. Because of my own sense of powerlessness and lack of ability to realize anything in the world that I think is good, I want the vicarious satisfaction of seeing her get skewered... And NOT in that way. Joshua Citronella was way too nice to her.

Toli

I had the same reaction lmao

Vincent

It's crazy you called the episode that because people are always calling me the Harry Potter of Having Sex and I'm rational as hell

John Lemieux

Harry Potter and the Deathly Swallows

Uhh YEA others have absolutely sexualized Harry Potter #drarry

Sorry guys 8 hours of Elden Ring talk comes first

Respect to Brace for only returning for the gay episode.

Esteé Dee

“Sexual Harry Potter” sounds like a Medium post. In fact, there are many.

Tristan Clark

I mean Harry's literally a quirked up white boy with a little bit of swag. I'd have to expect he busts it down sexual style.

Splunk sounds like a board game an annoying host would pull out at a party to fuck up the vibe

tuff shed

As an aeronautical engineer, can confirm that navier-stokes equations are "just some sort of a fan thing like a spiral". In all seriousness I was so annoyed when they shitted their pants over "solving" it. That's not what they did. The LLMs interpreted a bunch of actual mathematicians work and connected some dots to an obscure completeness question. It has literally no impact on anyone who actually uses these equations for fluid dynamics

Lojban Chauvinist

I'll always be a rationalist as much as a socialist. "Antihuman freaks" is what respectable society once called Marxists. This might be a rough listen

SunRaTheThird

i thought this episode would be about how allegedly all of SF rationalist community is a sex cult and the harry potter fanfic was made to attract teenage victims.

Josh

Got me feeling like sexual Harry Potter

Willm

Is Harry Potter fan fiction a metaphor or something

Clean Shirt Piggie

Rationalists need bednets to catch the crabs crawling around their altruism house in Berkeley

John Reeves

Being about freaks is pretty much the premise of the whole podcast.

John Reeves

I just had to pause and come here to ask: who on Earth (other than Liz apparently) likes to buy a plane ticket!? That's like the most annoying stressful thing to do, made deliberately obtuse by the industry. Setting aside questions about if an AI should be trusted to do it, the process sucks.

Clean Shirt Piggie

Maybe Bernie’s staff was infiltrated by a rationalist freak?

John Reeves

If the brain isn't software, what is it?

Harrison Sanchez

if you'd have let me bully the harry potter kids we wouldn't have this now!!!!!

Horse Badorties

She would win. Her dad taught her to debate Christian doctrine, and she has a huge debate muscle like those crabs with one giant claw.

Harry crammed his throbbing wand deep into Hermione’s quivering goblet of fire.

Doug Cartel

I was into that transhumanist shit for years. And then I grew up!

monkey

Something about Harry Potter spelunking into a dark wet hole

Jo

HPMOR infohazard I’ll curse you with: Harry is explicitly *not* sexual in it (it comes up in the ‘fic that he has no interest) because he solves everything and defeats Voldemort in the first year of wizarding school at age 9 with the power of Logic.

Isaac

Outstanding episode and guest. The kayfabe, hyperscaling and financialization of AI is a world-historical fraud, mirrored on the political stage by MAGA and all its neoreactionary cousins.

Doug Cartel

We literally gave the nuclear arsenal controls to Lord Fuckwad from Shrek and we are being rightly punished for it

Doug Cartel

The fact that a Harry potter fanfic has ANY influence at all in this, is more than enough evidence that the Tumblr ballpit fiasco had a direct impact on these lunatics

Doug Cartel

Nickerbocker Bostrum sounds like a moron. They were either trying to make reaganomics more palatable to their cowardice, or they were trying to make altruism morally acceptable to their capitalist dogma

Doug Cartel

This is another case of a guy who over thinks himself into murder. He thought he was making a cool pattern with his lawnmwoer and didn't see the swastika until he was looking down from the master bedroom And then he was like "well it's a cool pattern though"

the_purples

since no one asked “cecum spelunking” is what I call butt stuff

Doug Cartel

Maybe that dipshit thinks he's Overton Windowing the police state by going "well at least they're just spying on you instead of murdering you!"

2026-10-06 02:00 I'm starting to think we should just give a prison life sentence to Altman, Karp, Bankman-Fried, Thiel, Amodei and Andreesen and anyone who's met them in the past 15 years.

Chachi uday

Effective autistics ae so annoying that if it weren’t for my ai i mean si girlfriend i would drown myself in either the gulf or lake of america.

Sexual Harry Potter

All the niche rationalist philosophies and concepts reminds me of when I was an insufferable ideology shopping 14 year old and we got a school project to write a new constitution, my group didn’t even get through the bill of rights because I was so obsessed with fantasy worldbuilding and debating stupid hypothetical scenarios that sounded cool in my head. Like whether the nuke button should only be accessible after a referendum winning the vote of 2/3rds of the population and whether anyone who voted for it would be required to sign up for the armed forces

Much better guest than whatever happened a few weeks back. AI has no scalable industrial use at the moment and it isn’t close to having any. It’s increased costs to most businesses. No business has a long term contract with an AI service in any sector. It’s lost the companies creating it mind numbing amounts of money. That’s not a thing that’s going to revolutionize logistics any time soon.

DB

It's very funny to get an episode with this title given the way Korean Draco Malfoy TS fanfic has been blowing up so much in the past couple weeks.

I’ve said it many times before and I fear I must say it again….can we get a trueanon series about the history of cybernetics Please 🙏 think of the fun theme music u could do yung Chomsky! The historians u could have as guests! I beg. Potential topics (in chronological order) — 19thc origins, 40s/wartime stuff, 50s Cold War cybernetics, Norbert weiner etc, 60s hippie-ification, 70s Stewart brand/whole earth catalog, 80s Santa Fe Institute & finance bros get plugged in to chaos theory, 90s cybernetics research unit nick land jungle beats type shit, and then thru to today!

You killed it, Liz! Most enjoyable episode in a minute!

CJ

Someone that wants to live forever should be shunned tbh. I feel like it's a symptom of the modern world not giving a fuck about our elders and our ancestors, which leads to not caring about family as much, which leads to the breakdown of environmentalism because if you're living forever are you even looking after the world and making it better for your children and grandchildren and descendents beyond them? Are you even having kids? Like you're just fully disconnecting yourself from nature and the chain of humanity past and future. It's really grim and fucking weird and self obsessed to me.

When computer make economy then pathologies of people who make computers become relevant, EA is an unholy alliance of Oxford, Berkeley, and Stanford nerds who took one philosophy class. Their ideology is easy to dismiss but it’s ultimately forcing humanity through a utilitarian eugenicist funnel, a view held by liberal and conservative elites as capitalism runs out of steam.

They touched on it briefly, but AI math stuff is a really important thing to demystify, re: the general "number" fetish these pricks appeal to in their marketing. From mathematician/Fields medallist Terence Tao: "In recent months, the success of AI in solving major mathematical problems has made headlines even outside mathematical circles. But solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of AI may turn the tool against the primary goal. Indeed, the mass production at faster and faster pace of “true/false” statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas. Often these solutions are announced in a rush, leaving no time for a proper writeup, the isolation of new methods and ideas, and citing relevant previous work of others. As in all creative professions, this raises severe attribution and plagiarism questions. Moreover, without the willing mathematicians who must take care of their development and integration into the mathematical canon, AI-conceived ideas would never become fully alive and the crucial human transmission chain between mathematicians would be lost" The whole piece is well worth a read and is a good foundation for why this stuff is a threat to research/education in general (and not just those things as "industries"): https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a-severe-misalignment-of-ai-in-mathematics/

Transgenderism is actually existing transhumanism

Lojban Chauvinist

It's meant to be cringe IMO, and then he clarifies that it's because she was crying (is that worse?)

Harry

this was a great one

Lojban Chauvinist

Sounds like you were a pretty cool guy as a kid and have maybe just traded in your grandiosity for cynicism. Fantasy worldbuilding is cool. The socialist movement would not exist without it; no real political movement would. I like that about the rationalists. I also don't think they're wrong about everything. They are easily villainized because they are autistic, therefore not easily understood, and because they had the misfortune of being enlisted to serve the current whims of American capital. But I don't even think there's enough evidence to say the tech elites are worse than the older bourgeois factions who brought us the atrocities of the 20th century, the War on Terror, fossil-fuel dependence and mass death across the biosphere

Lojban Chauvinist

I want more effective altruists, just socialist ones. Engels was an early effective altruist of sorts. (Interesting trivia for you: Peter Singer, the Australian analytic philosopher who invented Effective Altruism, also wrote at least one book on Marx and may have been some kind of Marxist before he took his own neoliberal turn. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Singer#Publications .)

Laura

I am on the mosquito net—>fishing net part and I have a book recommendation. “Plagues and the paradox of progress by Thomas bollykyy” is about how there have been many NGOs and programs dedicated to specific disease interventions, like vaccine programs or something, which have saved millions of lives and have great numbers proving their efficacy, which makes them attractive to fund. However since it’s single-issue focused without accompanying improvements in the overall healthcare system, the infrastructure of the country, the size of the economy, etc, it basically leaves millions of people alive (which is good) but then nothing to support them after. And people have to die of something, so when infectious diseases are eradicated people are more likely to die of things like cancer etc which require long term care that is not available. It’s very simple (and effective) to set up a vaccine tent and move on to the next city, it’s not simple to set up long term healthcare infrastructure. To be clear the author isn’t saying it’s bad that there are all these people alive who would otherwise be dead from common and easily prevented diseases, but that they aren’t being properly accompanied by long term and systemic improvements. It is a fascinating book that demonstrates what happens when raw utilitarianism fails to consider broader effects

Lojban Chauvinist

The point of the AI companies is not to advance mathematics, obviously, but just to boast that their tool has superhuman powers. And if (big if), IF their tools have, like they're claiming, semi-autonomously synthesized existing knowledge to come up with a genuine new discovery, that is kind of a big win for them.

Lojban Chauvinist

So why is China racing ahead on AI if it's all late-capitalist American pathology? Or are you just concerned that instead of funding anticommunist militia & mass-pacification psyops, and working the system in the usual ways, the new crop of billionaires will spend their cash on shrimp welfare and new scifi thinktanks that are somehow more creepy than the old thinktanks?

simon

EA is basically three things rolled into one as I understand it: 1. See how much overhead charities have and how effective they are. Seems good. 2. Measuring charities by QALYs. QALYs are necessary in fields like medicine on 'are we going to let that 11 yo kid with a badly broken arm wait three more hours in the ER or help this old 80 yo person with a heart attack' (80 yo)/'are we going to give this kidney to this 11 yo kid or this 80 yo' (11 yo). But once you start comparing QALYs between albino kid protection in central Africa and pain relief for shrimp being farmed you've lost the plot. 3. Longtermism. Just really stupid and bad. So 1 and change out of 3. Which translates to four shrimp, a llama and a pilot for sustainable farming in Bhutan (exactly 11.4 QALYs)

I hate to be such an AI doomer but as someone in the sciences it is way too optimistic to say that it will need humans to guide it. What is being done routinely now was unimaginable fantasy two years ago, and the idea that systems could be built that let LLMs identify holes in the literature, syntheses of different ideas, or unexplained patterns we observe experientially and perform fully autonomous research isn't far fetched. Right now their capabilities and judgment could not surpass a career scientists and of course it directly relies in existing literature, but I just do not see LLM self guided research being uncrackable. I think people underestimate how often people's research is just based on an amalgam of existing work they connected and maybe some unpublished results they acquired, and not truly some sort of leap of reasoning and true originality.

Sexual Harry Potter

It drives me crazy that so few people are recognizing that the “AI safety” industry shaping the “anti AI” narrative is controlled opposition. It seemed so obvious once you guys pointed it out and I learned who these people were. Chudkowski is literally posting cocomelon style AI garbage videos on twitter and going “I just watched this for half an hour and found it very engaging, it’s over for Hollywood” lmao. But It’s impossible to talk to people about this when the most radical anti position has already been framed as total human extinction in near future, anything less than that is treated suspiciously as some kind of concern trolling or ignorant fence sitting.

Sexual Harry Potter

Come on dude you can’t be falling for the Wall Street journal “AI race” china stuff. China has paused or rolled back a lot of AI development and are almost entirely focused on making it economically viable for the proven applications rather than throwing endless money into a pit to create AI super God. They’ve introduced regulations far stricter than anything even realistically proposed in the US and their proportional spending is a miniscule fraction of ours.

Carp

It might be crackable but would it be profitable? They said the Hugging Face hack compute cost $4-15 million, a sum that could raise a class of children from infancy to adult software engineers to execute it instead. How much would the compute be for complex scientific problems and how would that compare to employing a scientist? I think the interface of this technology completely obfuscates how we think about it - I type into my laptop running off a small battery and it does a complex task in a matter of minutes and seems like magic, but over in Slough a hundred acres of data center space uses 1TWh of electricity produced by an entire tanker of Saudi LNG to make the trick happen. And of course, none of this is priced in, so I get to imagine that all of this happens for £3 a month. Both the hysteria and hype insists on treating AI like a metaphysical entity of Cyberspace when in actuality it requires vast material infrastructure, way beyond just Data Centres, that require human labour at every single stage.

Pranjal Dwivedi

It’s not WSJ but their own internal reporting about unemployment numbers among 35 and younger, yes 28 year old zoomers in Chinese cities are also reduced to delivery apps and chasing diminishing white collar work, of course they get subsidised housing (if you qualify through hukou that is!)

zomberry

Great guest. Have him back

king_von_diesel

The funny thing about all of this is that economics literally has a word for their worst fear: knightian uncertainty, or unknowable probabilities for unobserved events. Its part of the reason why bubbles pop at seemingly random times- all it takes is someone missing an invoice at the worst possible time for cascading effects to being down the market, and that comes down to the fragility of systems.

YIMBY 4 HEAVEN

My favorite tone-deaf case for AI is the groccery list. !WAIT DONT SCROLL! Don't stop thinking about about how dumb that is. Keep considering it. Go deeper. Don't struggle, youve read this far, you need to sit with this. Its even stupider than your knee jerk reaction. Deeper. Dig deeper. Come on, keep going, really imagine the different scenarios: A list of sh*t you don't like eating is just the beginning. Sink down, breathe deep, think about it replying "what do you want to buy at the groccery store?" Exhale, relax your jaw, imagine being in the store and asking it out loud "what's on my groccery list?" and once you feel ready you may vomit. If you can't get there, say out loud "The part about groccery shopping that really sucks is making the list."

Wes Rich

Truly tragic to hear a name like “Jacob Coxon” be mentioned multiple times on an episode without Brace there to make Cocksman jokes. So sad, pray for America yall.

Liam Farley

They were running $4 million of compute and the agents happened to hack huggingface. That's not a metric of what it actually costs to hack a website. To answer your question I think the costs to move from a researcher running a team of agents to the team of agents managing themselves will be marginal to cheaper within 5 years. They're all becoming so reliant on AI already that there's barely a line between the AI and their "judgment". 5 years ago this was nothing and now every computer in every lab I've passed through has some LLM open. Stuff that would require a staff bioinformatician is being done routinely faster and for a fraction of the price. Ten years ago you would've spent a trillion dollars and needed more crystallographers then the world has ever produced to do something ESMfold can do in an afternoon. It just feels arrogant for me to think I'm special at thinking and an everything else gets eroded away I'll get to Lord over the agents instead of just running experiments made by an LLM because I'm cheaper than a robotics platform.

K

You can tell these cultist fuckers aren't asimov fans cos a) reading hard scifi would have taught them some science or at least to respect the scientific method, b) those arrogant fuckers would definitely be calling themselves pyschohistorians.... Now its a tv show so some of these juvenile dullards might cotton on soon enough. Wish all these fake sci-fi fans actually read the greats instead of just watching star wars and reading fanfics, they wouldn't have turned out so fucking ridiculous.

M

The part where they discussed Caroline Ellison being a biological racist was interesting because she volunteered at a colleagues literacy program

Financial eyes financialize financial lies

Vic Perry

I agree. Almost no SF movie is more than simple, idea-wise. Nobody is making Rudy Rucker, Bruce Sterling, Kate Wilhelm movies. The famous PKD movies can entertain about one idea per novel.

MirrorOooMirror

I have been saying the same thing (like a tin foil hat wearin nut) for several years now, basically since I first read about “project lavender”. That is, “AI” has been used as a cover and excuse to avoid accountability and accomplish their dark anti human (non elite human) goals. No accountability for things like war crimes, insurance claim denials, and mass lay offs, etc. Ahh well shucks, computer says, sorry nothing we can do about it. Oh all those children we triple tapped with missiles? Whoops, AI had a hiccup. Your health insurance claim was denied? Ohh, yeah sorry thats what our systems are showing based on the data, ya know. You lost your job? Well, the numbers here say you just aren’t efficient enough. Oh, your house insurance cost quadrupled? Yeah, well the program shows you live in a high risk area for a natural disaster so… sorry computer says.

not really using baudrilliards logic of the code correctly. he has some dialogue with guilliame that explains it pretty succinctly. It's not "reducing things to numbers". also need to know about spectrality for appropriate context

It’s not crazy that probability as a scientific enterprise came up as a risk management/financing tool. Insuring colonial projects, like the East India Company, were funded based on the probabilities of return, for which they had to come up with the actuarial sciences.

You guys!! I presented at SlutCon about full vulva arousal and engorgement. I’m a Sexological Bodyworker and somatic sex educator and help people heal from pelvic pain and birth injuries (context). I’m not into EA nor a Rationalist. Some of the organizers of SlutCon are Rationalists, I don’t think they’re EA. I responded to a friend’s post wondering anout the drama. maybe this will be clarifying: “Some people in the AI safety scene are also some of the Slut Con organizers. Some or all (not sure) of the slut con organizers also do CNC orgies. However, slut con is not an AI event nor is it a CNC orgy. the venue at which Slut Con was hosted is Rationalist affiliated. Sometimes there are AI safety events at this venue. But it also rents out to other events and conferences. Now, people who care about AI safety think that “normies” will think AI safety is weird and stupid because slut con and CNC orgy people are associated with it. Secondly, some people think that these CNC orgies are functioning as networking events for AI safety, and that it’s forcing people who want to do AI safety to attend CNC orgies. From what I gather, this also isn’t true, as only a some people who do AI safety go to these (a seemingly small amount according to what I’ve seen posted), and not everyone that attends them is into AI safety. I saw a post from Aella that most the people attending the CNC orgies are from fetlife (makes sense). Finally, people who did not go to slut con think it’s a CNC orgy, or somewhere to buy sex, neither of which is true. As for me, I went to and presented at slut con, do not attend CNC orgies, and am not involved with AI safety nor the Rationalist community.”

I actually like the Peter Singer thought experiment because the much more obvious answer to it is that actually market action doesn't reflect people's true desires and moral calculus, and therefore must absolutely be brought to heel. Alas we ended up with AE instead.

Surprising that Liz didn't pronounce spelunking as spelünking or spe-loon-king in the same manner as she does with debunking and debünking or de-boon-king.

YC in the intro had me laughing in front of the deli counter guy 😔

I prefer the definition of entropy that goes something like this: “The degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity.” -taken from MWebster online The pop-sci definition of entropy as “the universe’s natural tendency towards chaos” is a bit off the mark in my opinion. I won’t belabor the nerdy details here unless someone requests it, but my study of thermodynamics has led me to view entropy not as a measure of chaos in the universe, but how a measure of how efficiently we use our finite resources. We generate less entropy when resources are used more efficiently, simply put. The idea that more entropy =more chaos is a matter of perspective based on one’s view of what it means for matter to be “chaotic.” The fact that these losers base their philosophies on being “anti-entropy” shows how scientifically illiterate they are. I’m not claiming to know an exact figure off hand, but I would assume that the effect their companies have had on global temperature rise are relatively outsized. In my opinion, a very “pro-entropy” kind of thing to do.

Sexual Harry Potter

@pranjal Sorry I was talking to the same person you were replying to but Patreon has a terrible reply system where there’s no clear distinction. I just spent an embarrassing amount of time rereading your last one confused about how youth unemployment is proof of racing ahead on AI lol

Ok good news is that the most recent ep on behaviorism I feel intersects a little w the more mid century era of this history so perhaps it’s all cybernetics after all (imagine the pic of astronaut pointing gun at the other astronaut looking at earth)

Hey, mathematician here. That is not what it did. It produced a novel proof. Yes, it used as input work from other mathematicians, as all mathematicians do to produce new proofs. Arguments can be made whether it "stole" that work, which i am sympathetic to. But it very much did a novel proof which is what mathematicians spend their whole careers doing.

I am sure someone else has said this but that is not what entropy is really at all
