I grew up in NEPA and live in Philly now. I remember looking for jobs on Craigslist around 2009-2011 and came across an ad for extras for one of this guy's films he was shooting in the Poconos. I remember it as advertising a party atmosphere with free weed, but it was definitely strange and off-putting enough even for a teenager into smoking copious amounts of pot.

Even though De Palma is explicitly riffing on the Chappaquidick scandal/cover up, the main character is a sound guy who records the politician’s girl. great episode - I didn't know anything about this case and from the start it was clearly going to be grim subject matter, but was not expecting it to be in the Wackenhut way. ty for a very thoughtful discussion tho, especially the closing note around what the screen era has done to the idea of 'transgressive' art. as a big Ballard/Cronenberg head a lot of art that's very important to me is intentionally shocking or deliberately transgressing taboos, and I think a lot about how on the one hand some of those artists have been the best at seeing where we were going to end up but also the seeming impossibility of making anything meaningful in that register in a world where, regardless of the existence of the commercially produced snuff film, profit is absolutely being made from death footage being beamed out for the algorithm. but then a lot of the critiques you see of 'extreme' art are coming from a position of 'anyone who would make something so depraved MUST be a paedo serial killer getting a kick out of spreading his fetish' about like, fire walk with me - but then in this case that is seemingly literally what was happening and i think a lot of horror heads are really reluctant to acknowledge that for some people the appeal of this stuff is literally just that they get off on grim stuff. so yeah thank you as ever for a more thoughtful take than in most corners of the internet.

There was also a very large failed landing off the coast of Sicily where thousands of soldiers drowned in the sea. There's a reason why it feels weird to see a story like this in 4K, as these hosts say. It's because serial killing as a phenomenon has been in a steep decline for quite some time now. The number of killers really boomed in the 70s and 80s and started to drop off in the 90s until they reached today's low rates. If you've noticed that serial killers seem like less of a thing, well, that's because they (thankfully) actually are. Funnily enough, this also mirrors the rise and decline of violent crime in America since the 1960s in general.

I've never heard of this freak but I know a lot about Robert "Piggy" Muldoon and 80s NZ politics. Muldoon didn't resign, he served three terms as Prime Minister and then lost an election. He did call the election early, but the early election didn't have anything to do with any sort of ethanol-related scandal - famously, it was because he got in a fight with his gay protege about nukes and she ate an apple provocatively, so he responded by calling a snap election while very clearly drunk (now known as the "schnapps election"). This is a popular story in NZ because it's pretty funny. Horsch also didn't have anything to do with him losing the election, which was mostly just about people being ready for a change after three terms of Muldoon and also about the nukes thing. Muldoon openly associated with the Black Power gang, which performed a haka at his funeral. Associating with some dodgy American chemist wouldn't have moved the needle much on his public image. Finally, this doesn't seem to have even been a scandal in NZ. As mentioned, I'd never heard of it and I am very old. This is the only article I could find about Horsch around that time. I’m from Kensington and it’s not just this house at all. There’s a woman on tiktok (@nightmaresinkensington) who discusses her time homeless in addiction in Kensington and she’s been speaking out about this case being nothing new at all for women on the avenue. Even if it’s not freaks like Horsch, women get killed or left for dead there all the time. My childhood friend was assaulted, robbed and left to die while overdosing by her “boyfriend” in a bando in 2015. Police didn’t bother to investigate just ruled it an accidental overdose to borrow a phrase from the show and moved right on.

I’m from Kensington but moved away during that same period, he was known in the alt/goth DIY and artist scenes and warehouse shows etc. Some of the girls I knew through alt modeling (goth porn suicide girls type shit) got asked to pose for him before. I read this book called "The Darkest Web" by Eileen Ormsby, and tbf it was written in 2018, but she talks about 3 sides of the deepweb, the silk road, red rooms/snuff, and a horrify c-p ring called "hate to the core"... that book fcked me up, anyway, she talks about how there are lot of myths online about hitmen4hire, red room sites of people getting tortured, and snuff films, but that none of it has ever been found or proven. She said it's easier to watch someone accidentally livestream their "demise" on Facebook than you would a snuff film... but that was 8 years ago and the internet has gotten darker and people probably have better opsec about tech stuff.

Imo contemporary "transgressiveness" is just transgression against basic moral goodness. It's "transgression" against the very basic idea that everyone has dignity and deserves a minimum level of kindness just by virtue of merely existing. The "social taboo" is respecting people on an extremely basic level. It's the ME Generation at its peak. I don't really agree with the "some evil can never be explained" canard because at its core the point of evil is to cause suffering. It is by definition a social activity because you need an Other to get your schadenfreude from. It's when you decide that your hedonistic impulses are a bigger priority than the well being of others, and so others just become fuel for your desires. The point is you're consuming a person in a way that's different from cannibalism but is still transgressive and parasitic in nature. We wouldn't shrug at the "eat or be eaten" imperative driving animals, but an evil person is animalistic in the sense that hes just ignoring social rules so that he can have this destructive relationship that only benefits himself.
