I never watched the show when it came out (I was like 8 when it started lol) but I started watching clips after I saw the Primetime trailer. One of the things that stood out to me the most is the part where Hansen reveals himself and the production. "I'm Chris Hansen" is essentially the cue for the camera and boom operators to rush into the room and get right into the face of the 'predator'. But you basically never see the footage from those cameras, and the audio doesn't really change from before the reveal. So these crew members are basically actors whose entire purpose is to intensify the feeling, in the moment, that the predator experiences that their entire life is disintegrating. These people are extremely unsympathetic so it always feels pointless questioning the mechanics of the show. But for most of the show's run they partnered with cops to arrest their subjects after they leave the house. So subjecting them to this experience is essentially pointless - the retribution is supposed to come from them being prosecuted for attempting to meet a child for sex. So the close up "crew" essentially serve only to momentarily torture these people before they go through the bureaucracy of the criminal justice system.

I've always been an empathetic guy, from a very liberal family, and agree with what you're saying at a gut level, but over time I've come to realize that excess and misplaced empathy is something that makes me and other liberals from WEIRD cultures strange moral anomalies. It alienates us from the working class both in America and worldwide. The guy on the plane in Primetime who says "we should just bleed 'em" is a 2D caricature of what is actually the norm among men and women everywhere, particularly the closer you get to the real proletariat (and relatedly, also among people who have been victimized). Norms against cruel and unusual punishment are bourgeois norms; they never took hold outside middle-class enclaves such as exist in urban centers of the West. The same goes for all other progressive mores.

I'm not saying we should all feel sorry for the people on the show. The majority of them appear to largely be opportunistic predators who thought they had scored the chance to have sex with a child. I'm more interested in the 'reveal moment' as it exists as a core part of a media product. When I watch the clips and episodes, I enjoy seeing those men squirm and pathetically attempt to defend their behaviour. I enjoy watching them reformulate their moral defense as Hansen reads chat logs. I find it hilarious when they claim they never leave home without multiple condoms in their breast pocket. And I enjoy the moment where the realisation that they're going to be on NBC (in later episodes, on a show they know and sometimes have watched) just annihilates their entire conception of their place in the world. It's astonishingly good TV, and Hansen, at the time, was incomprehensibly good in his role. I guess I fixated on the reveal moment because it's so consistent and unlike most of the rest of their routine, it's not really justifiable as some sort of public service catching potential child abusers. It's purely spectacle. But it seems to be so important to the process that they retain it in the non-NBC variants that Hansen has done. And I wanted to mention it here because unlike .ost of the other artifices and spectacle elements of the show (eg the pressure for decoys to try to get as many subjects to the house as possible) I don't think any of the critiques of the show have really looked at this particular element I've seen Predators but not Primtine - it's not out in the UK for another two weeks.
