An episode about the events of January 6th—the furor, the terror, and the sacrificial lambs led to their deaths by forces they cannot even fathom. We take the elevator down to the basement—and shine a light through smoke and puffs of chilly breath.

Except saying that trump was done for after Jan 6th lol

Should Joan have relaxed, Julian?

Listening in 2025 and trump is pres again 😞

Coming back to this years later, I really enjoyed brace's rant in the end. Hindsight 2025, the sacrificed pig is still squealing; maybe it's been ressurected, maybe it's on life-support and being fist puppeted by the piggies around it who are wearing it's flesh. I am leaning towards the second.

I wasn’t listening to TA yet in 2021 and for some reason decided to revisit their take. Reasonable assumption but hearing ‘Trump is toast he’s down for the count’ is incredible. I mean he is a doddering demented juiceless fuck now but he certainly is president again. What a world

I really like yer podcast. My parents are hardcore Q people and so this is a nice sublimation for my pent up lefty rage. Great work :)

Dear Mr. Belden, I have an inquiry for you as notorious leftist and horny guy. I recently matched with a hot girl and tinder and she’s a cop. What is the moral path forward? Love you

Militia Etheridge

Prior to the deaths the second day, Jan 6th had as many deaths as Benghazi.

kyledamon96

My former professor on FB called Trump a coward. I couldn’t have agreed more, but phrased it that “This man is no Attila” and found many liberals coming to defense of our empire

malpertuis

The sacrificial king stuff was dizzyingly good

Can we please get the podcast to weigh in on the nuking of Japan? Justified or unjustified?

Ok maybe I'm an idiot - but the Capitol Police DIDN'T remove those barriers? So what was that video floating around, was that fake somehow? So confused damn.

TrueAnonPod

Totally unjustified one of the most barbaric acts of the 20th century

TrueAnonPod

The guy who took it later clarified that that isn’t what happened yeah

Damn you're right. Marcus Diapola was the guy who shot the video, and that's what he said. Just googling "Capitol hill barricade" doesn't' get you there though had to find out his name and search for that specifically, the ratio is still like 80% the original false story to 20% the clarification. Thanks for explaining!

Extremely disappointed in you guys. Can't you see that this attack on our democracy by lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...

I don't see how this event re-legitimizes the power of the state in terms of the public imagination or popular opinion. On one side you are going to have a bunch of Trumpers who are going to be more radicalized than ever. On the other side, you have elected officials openly wondering why an open conspiracy wasn't taken seriously by people within the state bureaucracy. It's been obvious for a while that the actual power center of this country wasn't going to throw it all away for Trump family rule (not some "deep state" bureaucracy either ruling for the benefit of one narrow segment of the economic elite, but an economic elite broadly that has outsized influence over our de facto one-party state). It was also pretty clear for some time that Trump wasn't going to go willingly either. He still hasn't really publicly acknowledged that he lost a free and fair election. I do think the rally on Jan. 6th and the planning that went into it amounts to a kind of open conspiracy to subvert the result of an election process (to the extent that there was any "interference" or fraud, it was Trump's actions with the USPS that amount to an effort to subvert the electoral process). As "insurrections" go (I do think that is the proper term), it may have been incompetent and a failure, but the simple fact that people breached the Capitol security is insane. People are facing like 1 year charges too for doing this (compared to decades at some of these BLM protests or the Trump inauguration where hundreds of people were kettled and held overnight in prison. The Trump inauguration protestors were not allowed to enjoy their time in some of DC's highest priced hotels the evening afterward either, or allowed to return home without further police engagement). All this is really unusual. A lot of politics is kayfabe too, but I do think Trump has crossed lines that people in power didn't expect him to cross. As far as the fallout goes, the net result will probably be bad for small "d" democracy and civil liberties of almost everyone else. However, I do think that the threat from the right is real, and a lot more substantial than the puny and barely existent left in this country. I suspect, the fallout from the Trump presidency will consume the Biden administration's focus as well, because the far-right does have some actual organizational capacity and part of it is embedded in the state (parts that Biden apparently thinks we now need to expand). It's hilarious from a distance and because it appears to have ultimately failed, however, I don't think it was a joke for the people who were on the receiving end (or from people who have been on the receiving end of police violence in connection with other protests this year). The move by over 100+ GOP House members to effectively overturn the result is also a data point that underscores the absurdity of the situation and the fact that fundamentally there is a continuing legitimacy crisis, that predated Trump, has gotten much worse under Trump, and will likely continue to play out during a Biden administration.

Incredible episode folks, I am always amazed by the passion and the thoughtfulness with which these shows are recorded. Thank you very much!

To understand our current state you need to understand religion. The only way to understand both left and right is as pagan subcultures created by the internet. Without the internet there would be no "left." Both of them need to sacrifice whether it be themselves or through an other. Think about cancel culture and doxxing and then think about the maga people sacrificing themselves. The world has been paganized by the jnternet. Everything is going to get way more violent and insane. It is foolish to think that humans can get rid of religion.

00000000000000000000

Genuine thanks, TrueAnon! No other takes I've seen or heard about this incident have made a lick of sense to me, except yours. The storming the Capitol thing was so patently absurd-- why indeed, as you've pointed out, is everyone on all sides taking it so deathly seriously-- taking it implicitly on the terms of the rightwing protestors? This reminded me why I am a TrueAnon listener. The sanity in the middle of such Mariana Trench-deep insanity.

Vincent Utah

Don’t you mean without the internet there would be no *synthetic* left? An actual, organized and engaged left in this country fell apart with the coming of the hyper-individualism of the 80’s—possibly even earlier when you consider the collapse of left wing counterculture and labor in the 70’s and the routing of America’s communist party in the 50’s.

Vincent Utah

We opened the gates to a darker world when we weaponized the atom; but hey, at least it led to the creation of a new popular art form.

Andy

Really great analysis imo, and sometimes struggle with your (Brace's obvi) conclusions. Trump worked up his most ardent, radical supporters on a selfish fiction, handcuffed them and marched them to the FBI for a mugshot and a fingerprinting. A sacrifice is right. And it's interesting because I've been really struggling with how to think about this. Watching friends who I consider "left" get whipped into the news frenzy and position themselves with the new state. It really wasn't until this past week that I could even visualize the media motifs of a Biden presidency. That may as well have been Biden's inauguration, a stormy transfer of power.

Vincent Utah

Do you think these MAGA people could have accomplished anything on 1/06 if they were more organized and had a coherent plan/structure, or was this entire situation mitigated from every angle? If the feds—and especially the neolibs and special interests within and surrounding the feds—have figured out how to route every possible scenario with these dead-end contingency traps, then the left could be fucked beyond hope. A lot of people are saying this would have been different if BLM had stormed the Capitol, but I’m not entirely convinced that would have been the case. These guys were allowed to enter the building because the powers that be KNEW they would hardly accomplish anything. They threw their temper tantrum, tuckered themselves out, and then went home with the cops making quiet arrests of notable suspects shortly after. Who’s to say it wouldn’t have been a similar outcome were it some other group, even a left wing group? Sure, they could unleash death squads to shell people on the steps, but I doubt they would be willing to risk that scene for anyone. They still have to maintain an image, even if it’s an obviously fake one, because where else would anyone go to for leadership? There’s no alternative system readily available for any of us to fall back on, and that’s ultimately why these right wing protests hit an impasse. I saw similar shit this last summer with BLM. Sure, there was police violence and a number of people were brutalized, but more often than not when we hit the streets, the cops were always there as an escort to stop traffic, de-escalate violence, and tell us when it was time for everyone to go home—and most people did go home. When protests were no longer permitted, a few still held out, but the vast majority went back to their daily hustles. Hell some even MADE protesting into a hustle. In the end, capitalism and the interests of the state still metabolized and neutralized all of it. It was Ulrich Beck’s “managed outcomes” manifesting plainly before everyone, yet people still kept marching in a half-pretend state like they were achieving something when they were still clearly being guided by the systems in play.

malpertuis

Also I heard that condor club story. everytime we passed the condor club someone new would tell it, myself included.

Sam

I do think people are missing the wood for the trees. The US police is the most militarised in the world. The idea that they could have been overwhelmed by a couple of hundred of 50 somethings with type 2 diabetes is laughable. It happened because they wanted it to happen. And why I don't think is too difficult to discern. This was their message to the liberal wing of the ruling class after their gestures of solidarity to BLM and the defund movements over the summer: "We will not protect you. We do not serve you. You serve us." Biden's Patriot Act 2.0 (with all the extra funding and powers this will in entail) is his apology and their reward. https://lovelass-and-others.medium.com/its-the-police-stupid-60e184e1af7c

Seth Aronovich

Au contrare, sir. The 'victory' against police happened for the same reason that 4/5 of those who died as a result of Trump's riot died from stress as a result of crushing. I'm not trying to defend the C or DC Police, BUT- they know protests. They know what happens if their guys end up against an immovable fence- they are crushed and die. They know what would have happened if the mob hadn't been allowed to roam around- tens if not hundreds could have died. I wish those who did this paid the price. Trump. The Trump crime family. The 'stop the steal' grifters. All these evil people. But it won't happen. Sad.

Seth Aronovich

Amen brother. It drives me insane. God damn Trump for doing this to people who wished for nothing more than to be able to trust him to DO something! Truly evil.

Sam

They do know protests. So why do you think they were in a position where they were chronically understaffed? It is trite, but bears repeating. If it was BLM do you really think the police would have been so heavily outnumbered?

Sam

Which is the arm of the state that has seen its funding explode since Reagan? The police Which arm of the state is especially hierarchical and uniform in its ideology? The police Which arm of the state is most, indeed fanatically pro-Trump? The police Which is the arm of the state that has consistently shown it is willing to cross politicians by not doing their job if they feel their interests are being challenged? The police Now consider what happened over the summer with the liberal classes uniting (albeit symbolically) behind the anti-police movements? Is this something the police were going to take lying down? Look what they did to de Blasio. Look what they do everywhere around the country whenever a politician so much as hints towards police reform. Now look at what happened after. Does that support the thesis? Republican politicians lined up to praise the police. Biden was forced to criticise the police - because it was so obviously a power move against him. Then Biden starts immediately pivoting to what is in effect a police stimulus bill.

Dearl Venneder

you guys think the Vogue cover thing is an opp? the timing of it is way too on. this feels like an idpol/cultural injection to coincide with reinvigoration of a new type of American Patriotism that the capitol break in will be responsible for.

skipmur

What this entire fiasco has highlighted is just how much of a non entity and generally retarded the left are. I doubt the MAGA and Q people are going to be as easily manipulated back into the Republican establishment fold as the hammer and sickle emoji people rallied around the Democrat establishment. It's hilarious that the left has the most accurate analyses of how the state functions and what roll it plays in a capitalist society available to them, yet as soon as someone makes a barely thought out move against one of the centres of state power they collectively shit the bed and rally around to defend it because 'orangeman bad'. Talk about weakness, Jesus fucking Christ.

David Demmel

As a student of religion, I do think that your first statement is true, but I don't think the rest is quite right. I think what we are looking at is a hegemonic market religion whichs main components are American exceptionalism, liberalism, calvinist protestantism and westernized individualist Buddhism and has been split by a schism over what causes the coming apocalypse. "Paganism", whatever that may be, does not really play any role whatsoever. Sacrifice is present in most "societies" - to claim that Christianity is free of sacrifice is to take Protestant theology at face value and a religious claim in itself.

David Demmel

The problem is the general assumptions that there is a threat from the right that has not been realized yet and whose realization would be sustainable as a semblance of stable society. Also, "legitimacy" crisis presupposes that there was legitimacy in the first case - Trump DID NOT lose a fair and free election because American elections are neither free nor fair in the first place. Then, look back at 9/11. What consequences did it really have that a bunch of ppl in the Intelligence agency knew about that there was a very real chance that this was gonna happen? This event allows the GOP to disown Trump and return to their old ways, the Dems to wield aesthetic power without much inhibitions, big tech to wash their hands from far right activism, get even more on the Dems good side and set useful precedents for later. This is exceedingly useful for everyone in actual power. That consequences are most likely gonna be relatively minor in the specific and probably harsh in the general supports that analysis. No one wanted to really prevent this because well, this was ritualized sacrificial violence, anointing the new king with the blood of the old and renewing state power and authority in the process.

Jack Lawrence

Because while Q people are deranged, the most dedicated live the delusion which in turn fosters belief and conviction - most 'leftists' on social media have probably read a bunch and talk about praxis, but what actions result from these beliefs? Nada, so it becomes a label to identify by , not a set of convictions on which to act. Especially online, people are so self-conscious about having the approved opinion and reaction, so aware of the patina of moral superiority that comes from being on the "right side of history", that when push comes to shove they'd never do anything to jeopardise that position, because they might do the "wrong" thing and lose their cred. People on the right don't care about that, because they believe something deep down, even if it kills them, as we saw on Wednesday. It's terrifying how neutered the left, to the extent that can be said to actually exist, is now.

Fantastic episode!

Liz please talk about the SATC reboot

danny

liz is on fire this episode! egads!

Garrett Paul

@david the reason why I call it paganism is because what we call the "Pagan" religions arose in an unorganized way centered around the individual and were practices that were built on top of each other over time. I dont really see any Christianity left in the Q people. Christianity basically took the sacrificial part of religious practices and put it on the cross. The Q people are constantly out for blood. Whether it be pedos and sickos or the global cabal elite. Their practices are completely different from anything "Christian."

River

This episode made me feel sane. The hysteria really reminded me of 9/11, though maybe a miniature version only amplified through social media. I love being a patreon supporter for this kind of content, but I hope you'll eventually release it because people need to hear this shit.

Yes! I loved their take about how this essentially WAS a coup but in the opposite direction: an early takeover by the Biden administration. This event gave shape to the amorphous blob that was the Biden campaign. Trump divested himself of the bogeyman role and thrust it upon his supporters instead, which is perfect for him because now he's free and perfect for the Biden administration because now they don't have to deal with the lack of purpose they would have encountered without Trump in office.

I’ll keep this short. I am highly critical of any and all media I consume. Even when I first found trueanon I was skeptical. With that being said Brace and Liz consistently have the best analysis, and I don’t think anyone is even close. I can honestly say listening to this show over the last year has kept me sane. I almost wish they had a different name, because as popular as they are, I think they could be even more. Thanks for what y’all do. (YC is the goat on the production of course, goes without saying)

Thanks guys, it's a relief to hear a sensible take on all this finally. Yeah, course Trump was the reset. Just like Bush was a W.M.D. They've still got a financial puzzle to solve in the midst of all this though. Which could be interesting.

No, it was not fake. Marcus is just giving his (absurd) opinion of why he imagines they let them in. "They definitely didn't just open the barriers, the pro-Trump rioters made a fist like they were going to punch the cops, which is why I started recording, then they backed off the barricades," Oh no, not a made fist! There’s also the video of them walking in single file past the police through an opened side door. A stand down order is undeniable.

I grew up in Big Sur and I have it on good authority that while Clint is old as shit and just sits inside watching TV with his collection of set animals, most waitresses in town know he’s definitely not shooting blanks yet.

As far as the second claim goes, I see what you're saying. I just don't agree that Trump has any valid basis for making this claim. His complaint is that the process is unfair and illegitimate to him specifically because it didn't achieve the result he wanted (him winning the election). I don't think a guy who won with the aid of the electoral college, and who controlled the levers of power this election cycle has any basis for complaining. The system was free and fair for people like him. Even with the control of the USPS, the Courts, friendly allies in several state governments, he couldn't manufacture the result he wanted, because he botched the national response to COVID-19 so badly. A person may think that Biden is illegitimate too because the entire system is illegitimate, however, that is not Trump's complaint. He claims to love the system.

Don't underestimate the influence & fervor of Evangelicalism. This Q phenomena has a similar structure to fundamentalist religions in that so much of their beliefs are driven by biblical scripture interpreted by their preachers. I live in TN and know people who genuinely believe Trump was chosen by God- and that goes for all of the GOP. TN's Christian Nationalist Gov. Bill Lee's own preacher Rev. Steve Berger, was at the 1/6 rally to pray for Trump's return. He held a Facebook prayer service from his hotel room that emphasized the apocalyptic nature of this gathering. Essentially, this fight is a precursor to the end times that will end by the earth being destroyed & the converted Jews and Evangelicals going to heaven. The rest of us will all go to hell. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ1TdgTlUSq/?igshid=1f6gae383ayol
