Great ep: Australia’s also got a v disgusting history with a lot of throughlines to the US with the stolen generation and the white Australia policy. In Western Australia there’s literally an island called “Rottnest” (the Noogar name is Wadjemup) that is advertised as a holiday destination when it’s on the grounds of a mass grave from a Aboriginal prison that used to be situated on the island. And like most people do not have a clue/it’s completely buried by the WA government/not talked about in schools. To this day we don’t have a treaty. We just had a referendum that was so poorly handed by the labor government to have an Aboriginal voice to parliament that got completely wiped out from a lack of understanding and fear mongering from our far eight parties. While a voice was not going to solve like much, the consequences of it not being passed means it’s going to be a lot harder for a treaty to be put in motion.

David

Just listened to this. Hope they have this guy on again someday.

Diego

Brace can I be ur gf

Dee Haytch

Dang, was just thinking you should have on Nick Estes for this. Look forward to listening.

Yo I live close to where the 751 were found. Got a few points of correction. Not all were children. It was unmarked and the Chief of Cowessess First Nation, Cadmus Delorme, said knowledge keepers and elders say nearby towns people and non-Indigenous people were buried there. Most were kids, most went to Marieval Indian Residential School. There were 139 residential schools in Canada, so there’s going to be way more of these discoveries. The survival rate of kids in Residential Schools was worse than the rate of survival for Canadian soldiers in WWI, this is a finding from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He’s wrong about the TRC not hearing from families. They specifically did that. I went to the hearings. I heard the testimony. Of the calls to action from the TRC 71 to 76 are all about missing children and burials. The TRC estimated that 4,100 up to 6,000 kids died in the schools. Those are proving to be extremely conservative estimates. The 60s Scoop is another thing worth looking into guys, forced adoptions all through the 60s across Canada. Fuck, they were still sterilizing Indigenous women against their will in my province, Saskatchewan, in the 2000s. The history of residential schools are a festering, oozing wound. This country has so much to atone for. The last school closed in 1996 BUT it was run by the nearby band. Many of these schools switched from being run by the Church, to being run by First Nations in the 1970s. The problem becomes funding for these schools. Pennies on the dollar given to these schools, malnourishment, disease, lack of clean water (still a big issue) persisted when the schools changed hands. There are a few errors in the episode but it’s an important topic. Respect for the episode. If you guys want a Canadian to talk on this let me know, could try to wrangle a guest for you. Kane name checks the city I’m from. I’ve done some writing on this subject if you guys wanna talk. Was at a former residential school recently for work and have spoken to many survivors. I kind of regret choosing THIS as my name on Patreon.

Adam Hulst

Do a pod on this subject with Nick Estes

Jimothy Realname

so proud that my country now has a second trueanon episode about it

otis

How do i just give money to Liz? No simp. I don't know what she looks like, but she's beautiful

BruceInAdelaide

"The survival rate of kids in Residential Schools was worse than the rate of survival for Canadian soldiers in WWI, this is a finding from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission"

otis

Oh yeah. Forgive me, for I have simp'd.

Please keep doing episodes on this. Canada is a corporation that turned into a country and has been doing genocide in the service of capital for its whole damn existence. It is one of the prime examples of what lenin said about imperialism being the highest stage of capitalism, and it has an *absurdly* successful liberal propaganda machine laundering its image, to boot. Cracks are showing in that machine in a way I never thought I would see in my lifetime. A lasting effect of Canadian national propaganda's success is that people are real bad at connecting the dots between capitalism and colonialism, past and present. This is Epstein shit on a world-historical scale, so would love to see you continuing to dig into it and help people connect those dots.

Harry P. Ness

One of the most important episodes – or maybe I'm just biased because I live immersed in the ~*Canada is so much nicer*~ bubble of ignorance, which is very much a real thing here

Todd

Would love to see you have on some of the comrades from Red Media. https://www.patreon.com/redmediapr/ Nick Estes there had a good book a couple of years ago Our History Is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance.

Todd

Didn't see this and posted same thing below so second this!

Jessica S

Thanks for this opportunity to learn. It was a heavy episode but depressing subjects are the most important to learn, at least that’s my experience!

sammi sweetheart

Tbh I am always so entranced by Liz… I’m like embarrassed by myself about it. I listen to a handful of podcasts pretty regularly but my heart belongs to Liz. (Sorry in advance if Liz is weirded out by this!)

mrakobesiye

Can confirm that Canada is not nice -- and it is especially not nice when you bring up residential schools. For years now all the Canadian news websites have had to disable comments on stories about indigenous people because we're so racist.

Jonathan lees

Aboriginals in Australia we’re denied the vote until 1970.

This is in my lifetime it’s just not history it’s still living

Canada, and Ireland. The Catholic Church and the British Empire's proud legacies.

Don't change your name

ian e

This didn’t get pushed to my rss

D.K. Wilson

Regarding this topic, the Papal Bull is the “conquest” legacy of the Catholic Church.

John

Exact same repugnant shit happened in ireland to unmarried mothers with the catholic church. Child mortality was 5 times the national average in the homes/laundrys they were put in. Until adoption was made legal and they could sell the babies to rich americans. This shit makes my blood boil.

gen~

i really appreciate this episode

Is your hatred pure?

This ep isn’t showing up in the Truth Feed on Apple Podcasts FYI! Anyway great ep, thank you for covering this topic

Robert Calcagno

Worth bringing up that Scorsese’s next film is an adaptation of Killer of the Flower Moon so I’m curious about his approach to the material.

Neil Radford

Killers of the Flower Moon is a fantastic book

Brian Long

I didn’t know about any of this. Thanks for doing this episode. Learned a lot.

bipolar_kratom_princess69@yahoo.com

A mind bendingly awful part of this is they have the names of a lot of the people who worked at these camps and are still alive. The TRC found them and instead of seeking any form of judicial or punitive justice they asked them to speak on an anonymous panel and then sealed the records of their identities. Convents in Quebec who were proprietors of multiple residential schools made over 25million dollars through the sale of real estate on unceded Indigenous land while the church balks at reparations. May they all burn in hellfire for eternity.

ryan

Wanna get into some sus af rabbit holes regarding residential schools? DuckDuckGo “ William Arnold Combes” and the work of Kevin D. Annett… tldr is the Queen stole kids from residential school and never brought them back and Mr Coombes was ”mysteriously died” at St Paul Hospital in Vancouver a few years back

ryan

Suck my little Indian dick

malpertuis

Rabbit Proof Fence was the film that started to pull back the curtain properly on this for me when I was young. Kenneth Branagh flat out measuring skulls & shit

Cooper DeMarse

This is the type of law I practice, representing Indians and Indian tribes. Very cool to hear them talk about all of this.

Todd

Yes!

Chad

That’s as dark as I’d like my infotainment, please.

Bogdan

Jean Chretien was Minister of Indian Affairs in the 60s when kids were being kidnapped from their homes and the fucker's just walking around

CC

Litrally the only other political podcast I can stand. Nice one loves. ❤️ (PS Footballs coming home)

CC

Ps Ive obly just started so maybe it is in the show. But there are allegations that Royals and British Aristocrats were visting these places to abuse Children. Simmular to Kinorca, (a children's home in the occupied part of Ireland) tho that was also a state organised "honey trap" where they were also running agents and loyalist organisations via the home to be a "counter gang" to the PIRA, and using it to turn informants ect, at which point mi6 and millitary intelligence became actively involved in facilitating the CSE.

Tim Childs

Did they ever make that Eyes Wide Shut episode they were hyping up at the beginning?

laihall

Every single indigenous person in Canada is not two generations removed from a survivor of these fucking institutions

laihall

Wanna echo the people big upping you giving John the space to say everything he needed to - it’s a fucking brutal and dense history but one everyone should know. The bottlemen episode with Kai Nagata has a very good snd regional specific history of British Columbia that dovetails with this very well

laihall

One more bit - the last residential school closed in 2000, and the model still exsists all over Canada because most reserves don’t have the resources to have their own schools, snd the most isolated ones have to send their kids to the nearest city which can be 12 hours away. Thunder bay in Ontario is the most visible of all This

Justlistening

Just guns germs and steel…Nothing to see here

Nick

Kill yourself lol

Doug Cartel

Along with Killers of the Flower Moon you should read Paying The Land by Joe Sacco. Good stuff about the dilemma between having raw resources on your reservation and being forced to fight the Canuck government for it.

Tania Torres

Why is this episode not on Apple podcasts?

Nicholas Snodgrass

This episode is not showing up in my feed either, I'm using Podcast Addict on Android.

Robin

new zealand doesn’t get dragged enough for this too, similar warm and fuzzy image internationally especially now that we have a liberal pm and our foreign affairs minister is māori, but google the māori boys homes. a whole generation had their language and culture beaten out of them, taught no social or parenting skills and then released at 18 completely traumatised with no support system and so many of them ended up in cycles of violence, in and out of prison, and turning to gangs for support. like someone said above about canada, the comments section on any news article to do with māori gets FLOODED with racist comments. there’s no such thing as post colonialism in nz, it’s still very actively a settler colonial state that’s still stealing land and children from māori. search oranga tamariki to see how the state continues to ‘uplift’ māori children at completely disproportionate rates, sometimes at the moment of birth without letting the mother ever hold them.

Gabriel Page

Good info in the cast but this dude need to chill. I'm trying to have a nice afternoon not listen to this dude get fired up lmaooo

lin hou

I listened to the Thunder Bay podcast & have not had the same view on Canada.

babygurl

Did you see Alfred got called out by a bunch of Indigenous feminists at NAISA a couple years ago for his comments on "sometimes native women report fake rapes on reserves" thing? Incredibly squicky guy

babygurl

These schools were built on the model of penal colony prisons and prisoner of war camps (col. richard pratt), which is why we see the same kinds of institutions in UK and elsewhere. Obligatory in Canada since the 1880s, largely decommissioned in the 1960s but ongoing to 1999, foster-care/adoptions took over as child theft became provincial rather than federal mandate/less obvious means of breaking down community political resistance. The scope of the damage these schools did (alongside other termination policies, land expropriation, predatory development, criminalization of culture, etc) cannot be understated considering the generational effects. TRC recommendations swept under the rug just like all other reconciliation reports, which act as cover for renewed termination attempts. John did a great job and it was great to hear from him. thx for some Indigenous content--would love to see more.

adam

Real big idiot comment here. Just turn it off if you don’t enjoy it. Dope

Lesley Anne Noelle

I’m not astounded at all…these kids were tortured, terrorized, and raped, starved, made to eat food with maggots, if you couldn’t at breakfast, you ate it later, they were punished by insane people-thrown down stairs!

Lesley Anne Noelle

if it makes anyone indigenous feel anything (better isn’t the right word), i think that white people in the USA were always in awe of the fighting spirit of the indigenous Americans. i know that it’s technically wrong, but i think that they were jealous, too (like a complex psychopathy…). foster care? 😡…someone called Majority Report about this, today. 21 July

CS

This is a really great episode, thanks for having John on, this shit is so fucked.
