In 2019, human rights activist and land defender Brandon Lee was shot four times outside his home in Lagawe, Lfuagao by the Armed Forces of the Philippines after being targeted for assassination by the Duterte administration. We speak to Brandon along with Rhonda Ramiro, chairperson of Bayan USA, about the assassination attempt, the ongoing abuses of the Duterte administration, and the United States' continued support.

Suharto didn't just kill communists, by and large his forces killed students, peasants, union members, and marginalized groups, AKA all the potential backers of a socialist movement. More were silenced by jail and the legal system. The remaing proletariat were deradicalized via petrifying fear. In Indonesia, this prevented the establishment of an armed revolutionary vanguard, in the Philippines, it would choke off the movements' support network and prevent further popular support. IMO, an armed proletariat and a movement with the ideological, logistical, financial, and military support of a revolutionary state (China now, USSR previously) is needed for a successful revolutionary effort in such a desperate situation. Unfortunately, the agents of Western capital are experts in counterrevolution and their desperation is only matched by their brutality. Yet submission or failure cannot be an option as the only result will be societal destruction and eternal subjugation.

Thank god this got re-posted with that extra 9 seconds at the beginning removed.

Kasz

At this point someone should make an auto download script and upload the outtakes and maybe play them backwards on YouTube.

Some kind of juvenile dissident?

justdave

justdave

I live in nevada around Philippino farmers and poor native kids, and it's their stories that shaped my politics and revolutionary ideals

It seems chevron sold the project rights for I Indonesia geothermal back in 2016-17. Is it held by subsidiaries now or purely by Indonesian assets? My father was chevron 30 years, still thinks Steven donziger should be locked up…

K Barlas

It's worth mentioning also that the Australian government helped Duterte draft those anti terror laws

K Barlas

What do you mean?

What is someone’s internal logic thinking donzinger should be locked up? It seems like an insane belief to hold. I is s he just that faithful to the company?

Evan

She didn’t know what she was talking about. ISIS affiliate took over Marawi. The Philippine army had to clear them out. It wasn’t about resource control.

Jessica S

Well, he should be happy that Steven will be. One of the craziest things about his case is how the DAs office repeatedly refused to prosecute the case so the judge, or at least the one at the time - the details are so hard to keep track of - somehow was able to secure a private attorney to prosecute. The case is so convoluted that I may not be recalling it exactly, but I just remember thinking how insane it was and could feel the hopelessness of the situation. I mean, when the very institution that’s ostensibly supposed to ensure your rights are protected violates those rights with impunity, what hope do you have? I don’t understand why no other judge or the DA tried to intervene. Maybe they “couldn’t” but certainly they could’ve made enough noise to make them backdown. Naïveté on my part, I’m sure. I just hope, if he can and does appeal, that judge will see it for the fraud it is.

Jessica S

What’d I miss?

thank you guys for finally covering the phillipines and duterte's shit. i have a hard time explaining the situation with AFP and the filipino political climate, and the extremely heightened contradictions there. i would love to return home some day but as a drug abusing commie i fear it will be a long while til i can. my best wishes to the filipino revolutionaries and guerillas doin the most

The last 150 years is littered with attacks that have pretexts of varying truth and relevance but are ultimately about consolidating power, “mowing the lawn” and controlling resources. How often have the imperial powers used the specter of Islamist terrorism to give them the cover they need to carry out the invasions and killings and clampdowns they want?

Ben Lowenstein

Unrelated but does anyone know of any good books/articles that talk about the US putting the Nazis/Japanese imperialists back in power in Germany and Japan after WW2? Or South Korea with Japanese collaborators?

Gavin Farrell

This Duterte guy sounds like he's following the Jakarta Method.

Jimothy Realname

mother fucker, you're gonna say t6hat and then not tell us what it is???

Dubaba

I just found out that Brace is in the CIA, and I must say, I'm proud of you dad!

RickinSF

While you’re at it, when is an assassination ever not a “targeted assassination?”

Playdoh

Do you also not criticize the US for their razing of cities like Fallujah during the invasion of Iraq and later in the fight against ISIS?

Benjamin Murray

Heartbreaking episode. But glad to hear more about this and see how people can help. You guys are real ones for putting up 3k for Brandon!

a clash of purple

Her claim is that getting rid of Islamic State/Muslim separatists in Marawi was used as a pretext for the Philippine military to attack leftists and indigenous rights activists.

a clash of purple

The Jakarta Method worked because the communists weren't armed and didn't even realize what was happening until it was too late. So Duterte can't do what Suharto did in Indonesia.

a clash of purple

Amazing how many Australian whites were originally political prisoners exiled from England for being dangerous lefties, and then immediately turned into some truly rabid dogs of the empire when they got to Botany Bay.

Gavin Farrell

Great episode. This is the human cost of American hegemony and military 'aid'.

Gavin Farrell

You guys ever consider covering the Indian Farmer's protest? Another huge story about fighting back.

Niggas get shot every day b, you'll be aight.

Black people in America are straight out a comic book, nazis

faswik

This might be a small issue compared to others raised in this episode, but a lot of disabled people do not appreciate the phrases "confined to a wheelchair" or "wheelchair bound" to describe their situation. The language implies wheelchairs are a prison or burden. But they provide freedom, movement and enable people to do many things they might otherwise not be able to. Someone might "use a wheelchair" or be a "wheelchair user" without being bound or confined to it.

justdave

Word, you'll be 'aight'

justdave

It is a prison, he was put into one, golly he was shot

Ryan Price

A Socialist Defector by Victor Grossman discusses this quite a bit.

Hmm I like the funny ones. I didn’t laugh one time on this show
