Man, this made me realize that I MISS this period. NFTs and VR optimism seemed dystopian and awful at the time, but it seems almost grand in comparison with AI, betting on wars, and some more AI that we have today.

Joshua Baker

Absolutely can’t wait to listen to this tomorrow at work 🤣🤣🤣

Do you do trades? Interested in a genuine Jeffrey Edward Epstein embroidered sweater, with certificate of authenticity? It's from the Les Wexner X Jeffrey Epstein collab line. I'm talking about the equivalent of a mint condition 1959 Les Paul in the world of pedophile memorabilia. I also got some vintage merch from Epstein's first post conviction apology tour back in 2008. Looking to flip the stuff they put out on Ghislaine's upcoming tour on my Depop. Hmu if interested.

a clash of purple

Liz is such a normie... Like, a weird normie who hates everything cool and good, but spends all her time studying pedophiles.

Comfortably Crumb

Is VR actually a thing that’s catching on? Any of you freaks into this?

Louie Van Patten

I don't want to brag, but when I was a boy I briefly chatted with one Mort Drucker on the AOL.

michael benham

Cool for video games and porn but only if you have no friends

Graham Hoese

Funny enough, that was my screen name on AOL

a clash of purple

The problem with VR is the pricetag. There's a few VR games out now that are quite good, but not good enough to buy a new very expensive console.

a clash of purple

You guys don't know what you're talking about. Come on man, Radio War Nerd are actual boomers and even they know more about the subject of video games than you do... At least, I think Ames and Dolan are boomers. What's the cutoff for boomers?

Breakaway

Dolan is definitely a Boomer. Ames is younger and would just barely fit into Gen X.

Brian Long

I hope I am dead before I fully have to buy into any of this. Blehhhhh

Grimmu

liz is so reactionary

michael benham

Holy crap you guys are uninformed and is this topic even related to this podcast anyway? What the hell you guys are out of material eh?

Zzz

Lol, for you to hate on info they delve into when it comes to VR and the Metaverse, says a lot about your own emotions towards this technology. Be gone from the real world, and go into VR indefinitely where you belong.

TrueAnonPod

Anyone mad at us for not knowing enough about video games…implore you to listen to Warren Zevin-Carmelita (1974 demo)…light up a marb…start rocking…

Gulb

What is this? Some kinda nerd episode?

Gulb

Same

Jessica S

Lol, wear it as a badge of honor.

pilongo

Why are you guys talking about this? Did you convince oculus to send you free headsets so you could write a "review"?

Malcolm Chaney

Lots of speculating about whether things could happen that have and do already happen online

A Sentient Katamari of Bad Life Decisions

Here's the thing about video games and simultaneous interactions: it's physically impossible. A real limiting factor in this is the speed of light, you simply can't transmit information accross the planet without a noticible delay even if you had the best infrastructure possible. But none of this matters, it's all smoke and mirrors anyway. Any basic netcode is chock full of interpolations and predictions to smooth over these delays. And here's the thing, unless you're playing a game that requires twitch reflexes, none of this matters. There would be no noticible difference watching a virtual concert between people on opposite sides of the planet between if we had that perfect infrastructure or not. As for player counts, it's largely a server hardware/software issue, I think the peak is from last year at 6,557. It worked, but the game had to slow down time significantly to compensate. Thing is, this is a releatively small Icelandic game company that managed this, I think this is a problem that Facebook can throw money at until it goes away, at least until we start talking in terms of millions of players, but at that point I doubt anyone would notice if that number was quietly split off into multiple servers.

a clash of purple

People are mad because you guys are like years behind the curve on this. None of this is especially relevant except insofar as it's just more tech sector scams to rook retarded VCs and literal babies. VR isn't new technology but it has never caught on because it's too expensive and it's too uncomfortable for a lot of people to use. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon, and if it does, so what? It's no different from wearing headphones and jamming your face into your TV screen. I don't know, there's some cultural divide here. I don't know a single person among all my family, friends, or acquaintances except for like a couple religious nutjobs and people who are 60, 70+ years old who doesn't enjoy gaming to some extent or another. When you guys go in on your "video games are bad and for nerds" routine it just sounds completely absurd to me.

D. Elwood

Fun fact: Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash author) dumped a bunch of money trying to make a VR sword fighting game and at one point had a kickstarter that seemed to be pitching a way to make it "feel" like you were actually swinging a sword somehow, it failed miserably. also esports is a dumb term but competitive board/card/dice/etc games have existed for basically all of human history so the "why would people watch this" take is kinda weird?

Pete T

Fun side note: after zuckerberg did his keynote, John carmack (of id software game, who now works for Oculus) did a presentation as someone on the ground floor who has to help build the tech to achieve the “meta verse” vision and he basically said “yea these people have zero idea what they’re pitching and talking about, this doesnt actually work”

CE

The only thing worse than listening to people who don't play video games talk about the future and possible deleterious social effects of video games is listening to people who play tons of video games talk about these things. Just admit you are captured by your own dependency and can no longer see them clearly.

jodo123

What’s the ethereal music used in this episode?

michael benham

Calm down bootlicker, should be fine for a subscriber to be critical in the comments? They should’ve just ignored this topic as it’s irrelevant to the podcast and they’re not familiar or well read on it. Fuck me for wanting the podcast to be good!

Don Workman

Video games are not cool or good

Don Workman

Really weird reaction. This was a great ep and totally relevant

Don Workman

It’s not liking video games that makes you a lame nerd it’s being so insecure about it lmao

Alejandro Pepsi

Has anybody seen Mr Moon's "Ticket to Hell" about secondlife? My friend sent it to me when I asked what secondlife was, and boy was it... interesting. It's definitely not for everybody but I think it can be a sample to point to when you talk about the virtual meat-a space. https://youtu.be/GxcM2ezCsNs

Karl Childers

thanks for sharing this. very clear explanation video. i'd never even heard of roblox before this episode but this is absolutely insane. there's no question this is where the online gaming / meta market is headed. conditioning children into total digital serfdom with tech that their parents can't understand. a new generation of digital serfs.

Gavin Farrell

This tech stuff is so freaking bleak. So who wants to start a Luddite cult with me?

Tomas Vall

My friend's studio got contacted by FB's PR/Advertising for a meeting where they were approaching them to use their animations and designs to help promote the Metaverse. Straight up, just wanted to reuse assets and say "hey, you'll see cool animations like this in the metaverse! Whenever it happens" But during the meeting the promoters had no real idea of what direction they wanted to take it besides "having a date/meeting/dinner on the moon" Even if the tech was there, the people who come up with the ideas for these things lack the ability to actually make this digital space anything but the most sterile simulation of reality- which isn't really attractive to anyone.

Tomas Vall

Video games have trained me since childhood to do incredible mental somersaults abstractly. This is why videogames are good and important. All my friends are digital but they feel real so they're real. Check mate. Chess isn't a real video game and thats why it sucks. Check mate again.

Alejandro Pepsi

Yes! I love Connor O'Malley "I need your american money"

dawood

i do not appreciate the disdain for VR. I am a quadruple amputee veteran who finally has a chance to live out my fantasy of being a buxom pinkie pie from my little pony.

Gavin Farrell

Video games are a new opiate for the masses.

Titivilis

VR is not for games. It's for porn. Obviously.

Titivilis

Also, like, they ain't every getting the Matrix going, but it seems like we aren't really that far away from some game company charging rich assholes the price of a real car for a digital car, and that is pretty dystopian in my view. It used to be that you could just buy a game for 50 bucks or whatever, and you got all the stuff, and that was enough money for developers to make the next game, and so on. But the big thing modern gaming does is turn every computer into a potential marketplace to exchange digital gewgaws for real money, and there is a certain economic class that will spend obscene sums for those gewgaws, so it's inevitable that gaming development evolves to cater to those people, since they have all the money.

BROTHER TO BROTHER

re: bootlicker - I don't think this is a correct use of the term, lol, as True Anon holds no power. And it shows that you spend too much time in the Metaverse.

BROTHER TO BROTHER

in order for liz to be a reactionary concerning video games/tech, the video games/tech would have to have revolutionary aspects/goals. reactionary is not a catch all term, and its definitely not for a podcaster questioning the dorky shit you like.

Alex

way too good

Son of El Topo

This already exists, there's a game called Star Citizen that is a barely playable tech demo, but you can "fund development" by spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on digital space ships. Some people have spent literally 100s of thousands on this thing. It even has a classic cult of personality around the lead designer. There's a youtube series by a former investor called Sunk Cost Galaxy, it gets pretty wild.

William

Liz, in the beginning, was starting to sound like some cross between a posh victorian and Julia child

AKorgar

People need to use the word gewgaws more often.

Svid

Ugh, Liz you have such a retarded idea of what games can be. Yes most games are consumerist bullshit but there are a lot of types of games you would think are cool, but you won't ever know about them cuz your co-host is short

Svid

Lol dumbass euro. America really controlled all aspects of the internet, huh lil babe

Svid

She's a Gen X normie. All future technology scares her but she has to warn the people of the thing that just happened a minute ago on the screen

Svid

Like most tech rn it's right in the middle. A lot of potential but only perves are paying

Svid

Shut up brace. We know you dropping shitty gamer references to make up for dumb as Lizz. If you gonna hate gamerz bitch you buttah be ready to fucking suck on a frag bjsjifithrjtjtialkanrntj. Lol lol jk. Party up with me for more XP. SERIOUSLY watch Young Chomsky play Inside.

Sean

if Carmack can’t make it happen it’s impossible

a clash of purple

"Video games are a new opiate for the masses" is a pretty stupid take... Did it ever occur to anyone that "people who play tons of video games" just equals "young people?" What you hate is young people. If they weren't playing video games you'd be hating on marijuana, or jazz, or Wahhabism, or miniskirts, or Western culture, or polyamory, or twerking, or whatever other thing people blame for the supposed degeneracy of youth culture.

Kate Baldwin

I was feeling very smug for not playing any of the games y'all mentioned. Then Brace had to mention animal crossing in the last 10 mins. Which I'm playing while listening 😒

Shiv

Parenthical Liz Version!

Evan Scott

what do you think makes your brain break and turns you so angry when people make the same tongue-in-cheek cynical jokes about video games that they make about every other cultural article in this podcast

Neil Radford

LiZ and Brace and Chomp need to read Three Body Problem!

Casey

Ahhhh. How I miss being 11 years old in creepy internet chat rooms.

TrueAnonPod

Just watched a video from that series I’m loving it

Phil F

Liz could write a technology critical book. A lot of these insights are great imo.

michael benham

You guys should listen to TRASHFUTURE

Bobby Volcano

Yes this is the devil's vision of the future but also you guys spending one hour in VR was comedy gold. So one can see how it will be compulsory but also compelling despite the clear weeoo-weeoo, even for us geriatrics. Dark stuff.

Svid

Please do an episode on the future tech your audience is actually excited about. Like me getting my legs surgically replaced with tank treads. Wheres that episode of true anon?

Cory Kim

Liz doesn’t know what slapping Cap is SMH

Dan Greene

Buncha nerds in the comment section

Dan Greene

I don't either and I'm younger than Liz

a clash of purple

If one group of people who listen to an internet podcast about pedophiles are calling another group of people who listen to the same podcast "nerds," then "nerd" is a word that has lost all meaning...

Sunny Francis

As a child i used to think runescape was called Run Escape!
